In the original pilot for "Sunny" that eventually became the season 1 episode "Charlie Has Cancer," Dennis (Glenn Howerton) visits his friend Charlie (Charlie Day) to borrow a basketball, only for Charlie to tell him that he has cancer, which makes Dennis do everything he can to leave without having to really help Charlie or deal with his discomfort in any way. It's brutal and brutally...

Fxx’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is revisiting a past controversy in its current fifteenth season.
In 2020, Netflix pulled an episode of the long-running comedy titled Dee Reynolds: Shaping America’s Youth, which included an interpretation of Lethal Weapon 5. In the episode, show creator and cast member Rob McElhenny plays Danny Glover’s character, Murtaugh, and uses blackface. A later episode offers Lethal Weapon 6, which also uses blackface.
But times change, and what was once deemed funny now is viewed differently in 2021.
McElhenney acknowleged that the show sometimes goes too far in remarks at an FX Network press conference.
“I find that my barometer is off for what’s appropriate sometimes in situations because, like, we’ve spent 15 years making a show about the worst people on the planet, and because it’s satire, we lean so heavily into this idea,” he said. “And then we are always,...

Prentice Penny wears many hats -- showrunner, executive producer and writer -- on the HBO series Insecure, about two black women navigating work and relationships in South Los Angeles. And with Sunday’s episode -- season two’s “Hella La”, which he calls a bridge between the first and second half of the season -- he’s added director to that collection.
After years of producing shows like Scrubs, Happy Endings and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Penny has finally helmed an episode of TV, something he tells Et he’s wanted to do for a while now. But it was Insecure -- which was co-created by and stars Issa Rae -- that proved to be the best place for him to make his directorial debut. “It’s certainly a safe environment because I know the show and what we’re going to accomplish creatively,” Penny says. “The most interesting thing, which I’ve told Issa and other people, [is] it...

Short films dominated the 2015 Blackstar Film Festival. Over 60 short films (expertly programmed into blocks devoted to music, Black boys and men, coming-of-age, experimental, social justice, love stories, fatherhood, satire and films from the diaspora), were screened this year, uniformly of good quality and reflecting facets of the black experience that seldom get expressed in mainstream cinema. Among the best that I saw (I caught 20 films) were "Black Card" by Pete Chatmon; "The Bravest, The Boldest" by Moon Molson; "The Youth" by Dehanza Rogers; "Dream" by Nilja Mu’min and "Swimming In Your Skin Again" by Terence Nance. Thursday, June 11 at the Los Angeles Film Festival, #BlackLifeBlackProtest will showcase seven short films exploring issues of police violence, implicit bias, black identity and human rights, followed by a public dialogue on how content creation can be used as a tool for social change. Included in the conversation were dream hampton, director of We Demand Justice for Renisha McBride; Pete Chatmon and Dorian Missick of Black Card; and James Lopez, producer of AmeriCAN. Though their films tackle different topics, all of the filmmakers say they felt...

Titled "BlackCard," the short film stars Dorian Missick, Simone Missick & Hisham Tawfiq, with Stephen Hill, Erika Myers, Malikha Mallette, April Matthis, and Valence Thomas rounding out the cast. Synopsis: In a culture requiring an ID card and commitment to the code, an African-American couple is about to find out just how far the boundaries can be pushed. It would be just another day for Leonard, except The Commission, a shadow organization tasked with keeping...

Any filmmaker knows that the script is but the first brick in a winding pathway to production. The feature documentary Click Here: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Making Movies takes this fact to heart, training the lens on the action that transpires before the camera even rolls. Once again, I’m thinking you movie fans out there will be interested in a documentary about filmmaking. It doesn’t have the all-star cast of something like Side by Side or the classic film clips of These Amazing Shadows, but Click Here should still be on your radar if you care about not just cinema but all visual storytelling in the digital age. Its full title is Click Here: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Making Movies, and it’s a project led by Pete Chatmon, who directed the early Zoe Saldana movie Premium and who teaches production at Nyu. He also won the Tribeca Film Institute’s Creative Promise Narrative Award in 2008 for a script that, five years later, has yet to be produced. That frustrating experience is what inspired him and co-writer Candice Sanchez McFarlane to embark on this other endeavor. Their scope appears to be very wide, as...

I’ve been wanting to do this for some time – a periodically (maybe annually) updated list of up-and-coming black filmmakers, especially those working mostly outside the mainstream; something we could call “black filmmakers to watch,” preceded by a year, not-so unlike Filmmaker magazine’s annual “25 New Faces of Independent Film” list.
As I’ve already made known on this blog, I’m not necessarily a fan of lists, especially ranked lists where the arts are concerned.
However, I do see Some value in providing black cinema enthusiasts like yourselves (or cinema enthusiasts regardless of race) with the names of noteworthy black filmmakers who may otherwise go unnoticed by the the mainstream press, and even indie film publications like Filmmaker magazine. We’re celebrating those black filmmakers… propping them up, you could say. If a site like ours doesn’t do that, we certainly can’t complain when more prominent media outlets don’t.
