Twitch is adding a 60/40 revenue split for some streamers, and is lifting the $100k cap for streamers already on a 70/30 split as part of its Partner Plus monetization program.
It’s also opening Partner Plus to Affiliates, not just Partners, and as such is rebranding the program to just Plus Program.
For those not caught up, Twitch has been going back and forth on what cut it’s going to take from streamers’ revenue. The split used to be 70/30 (with streamers getting 70% and Twitch taking 30%) for all Partners. But, in September 2022, Twitch upped its own cut to 50%, something that—as you can probably guess—didn’t go over too well with streamers.
Around a year later, Twitch unveiled the Partner Plus Program, where Partner streamers could go back to a 70/30 split if they met certain criteria. Another notable part of that program was the $100k cap: Twitch would only pay...

TwitchCon is returning to North America and Europe in 2024. The yearly convention organized by Amazon-owned streaming hub Twitch will make its first visit to Rotterdam on June 29 and 30. Three months later, the streaming community will flock to San Diego for TwitchCon North America, which will run from September 20-22.
The two TwitchCon events will celebrate streamers through keynote addresses, panels, meet-and-greets, esports tournaments, and an in-person Creator Camp. The platform’s annual gathering began in 2015 in San Francisco and has since visited cities around the world.
The European edition of the convention is coming to Rotterdam six years after it debuted in Berlin. Since then, TwitchCon Europe has traveled to Amsterdam and Paris. The San Diego Convention Center, best known as the home of Comic-Con International, has established itself as the perennial host of TwitchCon North America.

A 19-word tweet from LeBron James has triggered a bidding war between two streaming platforms. The NBA star known as King James announced his intention to begin broadcasting video games, and both Twitch and Kick are hoping to bring him to their respective platforms.
James is a fan of the Madden NFL franchise. He played the popular football sim to kick off 2023, and he finished out the year by suggesting that Madden could be a key part of his post-playing career. On X, he asked his followers which platform he should use if he decides to bring his Madden gameplay to the masses.
Thinking of live streaming my @EAMaddenNFL games when I play. . Who should I stream with? Meaning which platform brand
— LeBron James (@KingJames) December 29, 2023
The replies to LeBron’s tweet include some suggestions from Kick and Twitch execs. Tyler Niknam, the streamer known as Trainwreck, wants King James...

Twitch co-founder and former CEO Emmett Shear is taking the reins at OpenAI.
If you’re not caught up on the OpenAI saga, here’s a good explainer. But the tl;dr is: this past Friday, OpenAI (the company responsible for generative AIs like ChatGPT and Dall-e) abruptly fired its CEO Sam Altman, allegedly because of a disagreement over profitability between him and OpenAI’s researchers, and because he was “not consistently candid” with the company’s board.
After a leadership scramble over the weekend, there were talks to bring Altman back in, but those apparently fell through. Earlier today, Microsoft confirmed it’s tapped Altman and Greg Brockman, who co-founded OpenAI and was removed as its president alongside Altman, to lead a new AI team.
That left OpenAI with an open position–and it’s filling that position with Shear.
Today I got a call inviting me to consider...

Dan Clancy‘s populist approach to tech leadership is going under the microscope. In an interview with Bloomberg, the Twitch CEO shared findings from his Dan in a Van tour, which took him around the U.S. for a series of meetings with prominent streamers.
Clancy took over as Twitch’s CEO in March 2023 after the departure of longtime head Emmett Shear. Shortly after ascending to Shear’s former post, Clancy got some face time with some of Twitch’s top creators. Those meetings, which included streamers like Maya Higa and SpawnOnMe, gave Clancy a chance to show solidarity with aggrieved community members. He took crowd-pleasing positions on topics like advertising as he crisscrossed the country in search of popular support.
According to Bloomberg, the Dan in a Van initiative included meetups with more than 80 streamers across 15 cities in just four weeks. As he rode around in the titular conveyance,...

Twitch‘s new CEO Dan Clancy has been putting in some serious face time with creators, joining them for live streams and opening up communication about long-standing platform policies and parts–like pre-roll ads (he agrees: they suck).
Now, KingGothalion has been the first one to hear that Twitch is apparently planning to crack down on streamers who boost their views by embedding autoplay versions of their streams on video games’ wiki pages.
Creators who do so can rack up thousands upon thousands of views from people who aren’t actually watching their content–they’re on the wiki for Apex Legends or Dead by Daylight, trying to answer some kind of gameplay question or look up lore. Because of the autoplay feature, they may not even realize the video is playing; it’s just quietly ticking the stream’s view count higher.

After Twitch began taking 20% more revenue from partner streamers, it promised to make up for that lost income by doing things like relaxing its longtime exclusivity clause and improving discoverability.
Now its latest change is walking back its simulcasting policy.
For those who aren’t familiar with the ins and outs of Twitch’s contracts, its exclusivity clause used to ban partners from streaming on any other platforms. When it relaxed that clause, it began allowing creators to stream elsewhere—but they still weren’t allowed to simulcast, aka stream on one home platform and broadcast that same stream simultaneously acrossother platforms.
That policy is in the process of being adjusted, CEO Dan Clancy said in a broadcast today.
“We’re still working through the right way to handle in terms of permission to multistreaming,” he said, adding that there’s “a lot to figure out a way to thread the needle on that.

Twitch‘s latest fumble handed Kick its biggest signup day yet.
On June 6, Twitch quietly rolled out unprecedented restrictions on branded content. The new rules barred creators from inserting their sponsors’ video or audio ads into streams, and also barred the use of sponsored banner ads and other overlays. Twitch ever so generously allowed creators to still display sponsors’ logos…so long as those logos accounted for no more than 3% of total screen space.
Twitch has new Branded Content Guidelines.

VTubers have cemented themselves as one of the most significant groups in the contemporary creator economy. Over the past year, virtual creators have emerged as replacements for human stars, made billionaires out of their managers, and attracted interest from major brands.
In December 2023, those pixelated personalities will get their very own award show. That’s when a celebration called VTuber Awards will go live.
The VTuber Awards will be hosted by Filian, a VTuber with approximately 600,000 Twitch followers. Filian will emcee the festivities on her personal account, where she has previously collaborated with big shots like Twitch CEO Dan Clancy.
For the VTuber Awards, Filian is teaming up with Mythic Talent, a full-service management firm affiliated with gaming organization Otk. Mythic launched earlier this year, with Otk co-owners Asmongold and TipsOut serving as two of its founders.

Twitch co-founder and CEO Emmett Shear is resigning his post after a 16-year run atop the Amazon-owned livestreaming company.
In a blog post, Shear said President Dan Clancy would step into the CEO role, effective immediately. Shear plans to remain an advisor to Twitch. He said the recent birth of his son made him rethink his priorities and take stock of his professional path.
“Twitch has been a place of community for streamers and viewers, but also for me. Twitch has been like my family, the place I’ve spent more of my waking hours than anywhere else,” he wrote. “With the arrival of my son, the time has come for me to focus my energies on building that tiny little startup family, and I’m ready to dedicate my energies there. Twitch will always remain part of my extended family, a community where I grew in so many ways alongside Twitch itself.

Twitch is losing its CEO.
Emmett Shear, who co-founded Twitch predecessor Justin.tv in 2007 and has been Twitch’s top executive since 2011, is leaving the company effective immediately, he said in a blog post today.
“With my first child just born, I’ve been reflecting on my future with Twitch,” he wrote. “Twitch often feels to me like a child I’ve been raising as well. And while I will always want to be there if Twitch needs me, at 16 years old it feels to me Twitch is ready to move out of the house and venture alone.”
He added, “I want to be fully there for my son as he enters this world and I feel ready for this change to tackle new challenges.”
Shear will remain with Twitch in an advisory position. Dan Clancy, Twitch’s president, will take over as CEO.
