Simon Chambers’ film about his late uncle David makes for candid and compelling viewing. Along with one of David’s former pupils, and a fan of his film, he talks care, contempt and infatuation
‘I’ve always liked the company of older people,” says Julian Clary, still smoothly beautiful at 64. “I like the fact they’ve lived a life they are often assumed not to have done.” He pauses. “What old people don’t know about recreational sex,” he continues, cadence familiar as a cuckoo, “you could write on the back of an incontinence pad.”
There are plenty of those knocking about in Much Ado About Dying, a documentary about Clary’s old drama teacher. But David Gale – 86 when we first have the pleasure – does not put them to their intended use. They plug holes in the wall, drafts in the window. One becomes a tea cosy.

Okay, nobody panic, but we think we might be onto something… we think comedian Jack Dee might be in Taskmaster series 17. And it’s about flippin’ time.
You see, quite predictably, Alex Horne has been asked many times over the years who his dream Taskmaster contestant is – and he’s been blissfully, almost eerily, consistent.
It’s Jack Dee. Yep, again, Jack Dee. Dream Taskmaster contestant is definitely Jack Dee. He really couldn’t make it any clearer: he wants Jack Dee on the show.
Even as recently as this March, when The Express asked him, he said:
“Jack Dee, and I say this anytime anyone asks me this question. I think it’s the only way to persuade him to do it. So, Jack Dee, if you’re listening, please do the show.”
And then, yesterday, Taskmaster released a video Q&a with Alex Horne on YouTube:

It may have been mere months since Taskmaster series 15 ended, but the brand-new series 16 feels like it’s arrived at just the right time, giving us a chance to escape endlessly depressing talk of the latest celebrity criminal revelations and our world leaders’ somewhat “lalala can’t hear you” approach to climate change.
There’s a lot to live up to after the excellent last series, but Taskmaster series 16 has a promising line-up that fits the show’s tried-and-tested dysfunctional family dynamic. The ‘mum and dad’ figures of Julian Clary and Sue Perkins are joined by three distinctive ‘kids’: the ditsy persona of Lucy Beaumont, the intelligent fun of Susan Wokoma… and Sam Campbell, who is completely bonkers.
Although he’s probably the least UK-famous of this batch of contestants right now, he’s got serious comedy chops, winning the top prize at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022 and appearing in some great sitcoms.

2023 has already given us series 15’s perfect line-up – a gem of a season with Jenny Eclair’s endless joy, Kiell Smith-Bynoe’s cheeky competitiveness, Mae Martin’s cool smarts, Frankie Boyle’s affable bemusement and Ivo Graham’s adorable self-loathing keeping us laughing all the way through to summer.
And there’s not long to wait now until series 16 arrives. The new run of 10 episodes is confirmed to start airing weekly on Channel 4 and Channel4.com from Thursday September 21 at 9pm. That means – interruptions notwithstanding – the series finale should arrive on Thursday November 23, which is traditionally when the next line-up is announced.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The series 16 Taskmaster line-up comes first and back in June, was confirmed as comprising Julian Clary, Lucy Beaumont, Sue Perkins, Susan Wokoma and Sam Campbell.
Let’s have a quick refresher on where we’ve seen the series 16 contestants before:...

Alexandra Burke, singer, song-writer and British X-Factor winner, has signed on to play the villainess in this year’s London Palladium pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk.
Oh yes she has!
Burke joins already announced stars Dawn French, Julian Clary, Paul Zerdin, Nigel Havers and Gary Wilmot. The panto runs at the Palladium from December 10 through January 15.
The Brits love their pantos at Christmas. Michael Harrison, who heads Crossroads Pantomimes, has turned the Palladium panto into a must-see event with spectacular sets and costumes, plenty of song and dance coupled with over-the-top jokes.
Last season Burke played Scheherazade — the Spirit of the Ring in Aladdin at the Opera House, Manchester.
”This year I’ve got Dawn as Jack’s mum and Alexandra as Mrs. Blunderbore, the giant’s wife. She’s the villainess and she’ll be terrorizing Dawn,” Harrison told Deadline.
Harrison revealed that Burke sees Mrs. Blunderbore as having “a Cruella flavour about her.

Ahead of the UK Digital release of The Heiress on March 15th 2021, director Chris Bell talks about familial horror influences, his South London ‘hooligangster’ phase and learning new lockdown skills.
How did you get the idea for The Heiress?
I was in my local library when I came across a painting. The artist was a local lady. I was drawn to this eerie artwork and I knew I had to meet her. When we did meet I told her that I was going to write a film inspired by this painting. Not only that but I promised to feature her in the movie – and I did just that.
Myself, alongside Danny and Kelly Prescott, created the script for what became The Heiress. I’d arranged a meeting with producer Jezz Vernon, whom I had recently worked with on another movie. We pitched the script to him and from there he came on board.

Yesterday’s news that the UK government is placing London into its strictest tier 3 coronavirus lockdown has been met by an outpouring of grief from the beleaguered live entertainment sector.
Venues such as cinemas and theaters were able to re-open in the capital on December 2 when the country exited a four-week nationwide lockdown, and many have put a large amount of effort and investment into getting operational again ahead of the lucrative holiday period.
In the immediate aftermath to yesterday’s announcement, the UK Cinema Association said the move would be “devastating” for its members, particularly as Wonder Woman 1984 will soon be available to program (windowing issues asides).
Today, the cast and crew of Pantoland At The Palladium, the annual festive stage show held at the famed London theater, have joined the chorus of dissent expressing the negative impact this will have on the long term health of live venues.

Alan Davies has suggested that his Dave show As Yet Untitled would never be made by the BBC and ITV - who would be too "terrified" to commission it.
The show sees a group of comedians sitting around and chatting about various tales, but the only preparation involved is that the guests bring a story with them.
"It's a dream job for me - I don't have to do any preparation," Davies joked. "I have the same approach I have for Qi - the less I do, the better it is!"
But he went on to say: "You would never get this to fly on the BBC or ITV. They would just be terrified: 'What are you going to say?' 'Don't know.'"
And Davies suggested that there are still some nerves about the show, explaining: "There's a surprising amount of talk about how many stories they should bring,...

Craig Revel Horwood has underlined that Strictly Come Dancing is an entertainment show rather than a "real dance competition".
Horwood, who has been an ever-present on the programme's judging panel for its 12 series, told Metro that some celebrities on the show don't take too kindly to his barbs.
"There was a bit of iciness between Julian Clary and myself but then we got on the same page and it became handbags at dawn rather than 'I'll claw your eyes out'," he said.
"It's an entertainment show. It's not a real dance competition where someone will be doing a tango world tour and I'm going to produce them and make lots of money out of them.
"They are already famous - they don't have to prove anything."
Asked about the enduring success of Strictly, Horwood said: "If you'd told me ten years ago that Strictly would still be going I'd have laughed in your face.

ITV has announced the celebrity lineup for upcoming entertainment series Your Face Sounds Familiar.
The singing show - hosted by Paddy McGuinness and Alesha Dixon - will see six celebrities perform as different musical icons each Saturday night for judges Emma Bunton and Julian Clary.
Olympic athlete Denise Lewis, comedian and presenter Alexander Armstrong and This Morning's Matt Johnson have all signed up for the competition, with Emmerdale's Natalie Anderson and former EastEnders stars Bobby Davro and Cheryl Fergison completing the lineup.
Contestants have no control over which famous singer they will have to impersonate. The decision will instead be made for them by the 'Randomiser'.
Celebrities will be awarded points for their performances, with the highest-scoring contestant winning a cash prize for their chosen charity.
ITV Commissioning Editor for Comedy and Entertainment Claire Zolkwer said: "Our viewers can expect incredible transformations, great music, unforgettable performances and a lot...

Alesha Dixon and Paddy McGuinness are to host a new ITV entertainment series called Your Face Sounds Familiar.
The show challenges a regular cast of celebrities to perform as different music icons in front of judges Emma Bunton, Julian Clary and a special guest judge each week.
Contestants will be transformed into a legendary singer for every show, before facing the 'Randomiser' to decide who they'll impersonate the following week.
Launching later this year, the celebrities won't get evicted from the show, but will instead be awarded points based on their singing and dance routines.
Whoever tops the leaderboard with their impression will receive a cash prize for a charity of their choice at the end of each episode, with a further grand prize for the series champion.
Dixon said: "This show is going to be a lot of fun. I can't wait to see their transformations and spectacular performances.

Unemployment figures may be sneaking up, but worry not! Julian Clary has an opening he's desperate for you to fill.
On Sunday (June 2), Clary brings his second run of Position Vacant: Apply Within to an end with a closing show at London's Palace Theatre.
To mark the occasion, Digital Spy got in touch with Julian to talk gay marriage, Big Brother and Norman Tebbit, and here's what he had to say.
What's the show all about?
"It's Julian Clary's search for a husband among the audience. A crowd of men are herded onto the stage with a cattle prod and put into a sheep pen, and through a series of elimination rounds we end up with my husband for the evening. Then there's a rather beautiful wedding ceremony with confetti and bridesmaids and a bishop."
How much is it all about the laughs and how much it is a serious political point?...

There was plenty to howl about at last night's comedy awards. But while Olivia Colman and Cuckoo missed out, there were well-deserved gongs for The Thick of It, Hunderby and Reeves and Mortimer
There is no justice. That is what a lot of nominated comedians who missed out on a British comedy award last night will be thinking today, despite painting on obligatory smiles at the unusually well-behaved ceremony in London. But actually there is some justice after all. The nearest the painfully unfunny Keith Lemon/Leigh Francis got to taking home an award was when he leapt onstage and attempted to snatch somebody else's mantelpiece-bound slab from the rostrum.
Olivia Colman fans might have good reason to feel that justice took the night off. The 57 judges, drawn from journalism, TV production and performers, shortlisted Colman against herself for best comedy actress in Rev and Twenty Twelve, only for her to go home empty-handed.

As cult comics speak to us from beyond the grave, Julian Clary and Airplane display their enduring popularity
Best of this week's news
Cult comics speak to us from beyond the grave this week, as Film Four announce a new film loosely based on the life and career of Chris Sievey and his alter ego Frank Sidebottom. Sidebottom was the large-headed wannabe pop star who became an unlikely phenomenon in the 1980s – which isn't exactly typecasting for the X-Men and Prometheus star Michael Fassbender, who's slated to play him. The movie is by screenwriter Peter Straughan and writer Jon Ronson, who has tweeted to deny that the film is explicitly about Sievey/Sidebottom.
No such coyness from the wife of Peter Cook, who has released 40 hours of unreleased material by her husband to mark the relaunch of The Establishment club (see last week's Laughing Stock) in Soho. Says record label boss Mike O'Brien,...

Julie Goodyear described the atmosphere in the 'Celebrity Big Brother' house as similar to a ''pressure cooker''. The former 'Coronation Street' star was evicted from the Channel 5 reality series last Wednesday (05.09.12), just two days before the final, after was described by some of her fellow housemates as two-faced and manipulative. Julie - who left the house in a double eviction with Prince Lorenzo - admits the tension between the contestants was unbearable at times. In an interview with new! magazine, she said: ''It's a pressure cooker. The paranoia was flying.'' However, Julie - who got on well with Julian Clary and...
