In the age of streaming platforms, the balance of power in television has changed. Studio bosses started spending many times more money on TV series, cutting the number of episodes so that viewers could binge on the entire season, and investing no less, if not more, in advertising and PR than they would for a major motion picture.
Competition has increased, with popular shows replacing each other every month, sometimes even every week.
20 years ago everything was different – the competition was not so fierce, but it was also more difficult to attract an audience. Channel management had to keep viewers glued to their screens for 20-30 episodes to keep ratings from dropping. Some projects failed and were quickly canceled, while others stayed on for nine full seasons, like 24.

On Nov. 6, 2001, the Kiefer Sutherland-starrer from Imagine Television bowed on Fox in the 9 p.m. hour, kickstarting a franchise that aired for more than a decade. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
No question, there are some eerie similarities between the premiere episode of 24 and the terrible events of Sept 11. The tightly woven drama includes vague warnings of terrorist activity, an assassination plot and an imperiled airliner. But instead of causing discomfort, 24 grabs you by the collar and simply won’t let go. Few shows are ever this riveting.
A creation of exec producers Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, 24 employs a couple of novel but extremely effective story telling techniques. First, it unravels its story in real time, with each hour on the screen representing an hour in the life of its characters. Second, it makes frequent use of split-screen shots, showing different angles of the same...

24 has etched itself in the books of television history. Arguably the first series to bring high-concept action onto the small screen, the popular show was created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran. The show ran for eight seasons and had one spin-off featuring a different set of cast members. Though 24 diminished in its later seasons, the action, spy drama was always an exciting hour that first started on November 6, 2001. The first eight seasons are about Jack Bauer who works in Los Angeles for the Counter-Terrorist Unit; He’s an agent that goes against the grain to make

CTU has a new hero. Here are some spoiler-free thoughts on Fox's new reboot, 24: Legacy, which arrived in the UK last night...
As cynical and sick of franchises, reboots, revivals, and remakes as we are or pretend to be in the comments section (everyone seemed pretty stoked about Rogue One), audiences are smart enough to know that Hollywood won’t budge on this trend anytime soon. They’ll shake every last dollar they can get out of the Revival Era as long as we keep our sticky fingers on our smartphones, tablets, and remotes.

[Spoiler alert: This post discusses details from the July 14 season finale of 24: Live Another Day.]
24: Live Another Day could have been Jack Bauer’s last day. Executive producer Howard Gordon revealed to Deadline that the writers considered killing off the counter-terrorism agent in the season finale of the limited series.
“We certainly tried out a lot of different endings and we rearranged the furniture every which way in the room,” Gordon said. “So we knew what it looked like for other characters to have met with different ends and we tried them all on, up to and including Jack himself. This has always been a show that is really about the days and the...

24: Live Another Day, Season 1, Episode 11: “9:00 Pm – 10:00Pm”
Written by Robert Cochran & David Fury
Directed by Jon Cassar
Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
Call it the calm before the storm. After a couple of weeks in which the action has been fairly frequent, the focus is narrowing as this season nears a close. This is a streamlined, effective episode that hits all the beats it needs to without much fluff. There are a few loose ends to tie up, and the wham-bam is a touch thin, but they’re necessary movements.
Jack has a busy hour, first with squirming out of the Russian assault (thanks to some backup), before discovering that Cheng has resurfaced to snare the override, learning that Mark was involved with the attack, and forcing Mark to help them capture the Russian bad guy. Oh, and he has his long-awaited heart-to-heart with...

And so we must say farewell to one of the finest actors to have graced this show. And what a way to go out.
There is more than a scent of resigned doddering in this week’s outing. Jack’s mission is fairly rote, as he needs to get Heller out of the presidential enclave without anyone knowing, but it accounts for much of the running time. He forms an uneasy alliance with Mark, who keeps almost everyone else in the administration occupied while Jack and Heller make a beeline for the rendezvous with Margot.
Yet the president and the terrorist never get to meet face to face. There’s no hidden agenda in Heller’s decision to hand himself over to his foe.

Recently, TV Line talked with 24's executive producer, Howard Gordon, and he dished that 17 missing hours is going to eventually get filled in, some way, some how before the finale show airs on July 14th. Currently, season 9: Live Another Day has been running in real time, meaning only 7 hours have passed, leaving this other 17 hours out there just waiting to be made up. However, Howard couldn't reveal any more than that as he claimed, "We’ve been sworn to secrecy.” Additionally, they asked if Kiefer Sutherland aka Jack ,might pass the torch to the very hot Yvonne Strahovksi aka Kate Morgan if 24 gets renewed for a new 10th season. Co-creator, Robert Cochran and Howard answered by stating: "I think it’s a possibility. There are no specific plans right now, but that’s the kind of thing we’d consider. The format itself is very sturdy and with the...

Jack Bauer’s latest terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day will span a full 24 hours… dammit.
Thus far on Fox’s 24: Live Another Day (Mondays at 9/8c), events have, as is tradition, “occurred in real time” — meaning, only seven hours have elapsed to date, with 17 more to pass across five more episodes.
But every one of those 17 hours will be accounted for by the time the finale fades to black on July 14, executive producer Howard Gordon confirmed for TVLine during a Friday conference call.

It's one thing for an actor to express an opinion about the future of a TV show, as Mary Lynn Rajskub did when she told TV Guide of 24: Live Another Day, "I would be really surprised if they didn't do more after this instalment". It's another when their opinion chimes with that of the co-creator and producer.
Discussing the future of Jack Bauer, 24's Robert Cochran has told TV Guide, "We're not going to kill him, I can guarantee that!", which very much leaves the door open for more 24 'event miniseries' in the style of Live Another Day.
As London has been so essential a backdrop to the new series so far, surely new locations are on the cards for any future instalments. Cochran, we note from his IMDb page,...

Jack Bauer is further outside the system that made his name than he’s ever been, both literally and figuratively.
On the run for years after supposed terrorist acts that actually protected American citizens, he resurfaces in London, far away from the U.S. metropolises he saved so many times. It’s the first time 24 has left the confines of the States for an entire season, though the show previously took a several-episode detour to Mexico and placed Jack in Africa for the 24: Redemption TV movie.
With the refreshed setting, there are many differences to the show’s previous incarnation.

Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) came back from the TV grave to Live Another Day on Fox, but is this it for the 24 hero? "I think if this does well, I can't see any reason not to do another 12," Robert Cochran, 24 co-creator, told E! News at the 24: Live Another Day premiere. The original 24 ran for nine seasons from 2001-2010 on Fox. After the series ended, there was talk of bringing Jack Bauer back on the big screen. Eventually, those discussions halted and the stars aligned, so to speak, and Jack returned to TV. "A movie's possible," Cochran said. "I believe the real-time format lends itself to television more than it does to a movie and it's its natural habitat....

Fox has released three TV spots and a clip from 24: Live Another Day. The series premiers on May 5th, which is this coming Monday! I can't believe it's almost here. I love this franchise, and I'm excited about seeing Kiefer Sutherland back as Jack Bauer. I really hope that this is just the beginning, and that we will get even more seasons of the show, and possibly a movie.
The high-octane saga reunites the Emmy Award-winning team of executive producer Howard Gordon; star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland; co-creator Robert Cochran; executive producers, Evan Katz, Manny Coto, David Fury, Brian Grazer and director Jon Cassar. It also will retain the real-time, pulse-pounding, fast-paced format with split screens and interweaving storylines. Set and shot in London, the suspenseful event series once again will follow the exploits of heroic agent Jack Bauer.
Four years ago, Jack was a fugitive from justice.

It's hard to write an advance review of 24: Live Another Day without spoiling something. This long-delayed, 12-episode revival of Fox's action hit is, like every other season of 24, obsessed with plot, plot, plot, plot, plot. If I even tell you who's in the damn thing, I'm ruining something. This series from Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran is all about what happens next: the complications, misdirections, and sudden, often ludicrous twists; the surprising but spot-on bits of casting unveiled with a magician's fanfare. (When a key bad guy is revealed at the end of the second episode, you're staring at the back of the character's head for a long time, then suddenly you get a different angle and go, Oh my God, it's [Redacted]! I love [Redacted]!), at which point the sadistic showrunners cut to black.)Suffice to say that Live Another Day is set in a depressive blue-tinted London, where...

Fox have been going all out to promote the return of 24 next month, but this new trailer (edited together in a similar way to the previews shown before movies) might just be the best yet!
There are a lot of new plot details revealed – at least in regards to where we find Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer at the start of the 12 episode event series – and it really does appear as if that tables have turned when he’s labelled a terrorist and threatened with torture!
With the action now set in London, Jack’s main goal in 24: Live Another Day appears to be saving the President and avoiding a World War, all while attempting to clear his name.
Are you excited about the return of 24? Let us know your thoughts below!

“I’m Back, Dammit!” Those three words feature heavily on the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly as Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer makes his explosive return in 12-episode event series 24: Live Another Day after being off the small screen for four years.

When we started out, I said to [director Jon Cassar] to watch me like a hawk. If there was something that wasn’t feeling right, don’t wait to see if it works its way out. 24 fans have been waiting patiently for Jack Bauer’s story to be continued ever since season eight wrapped up way back in 2010, and that wait is now almost over with the upcoming 24: Live Another Day, a 12-episode limited series which picks up four years after the former CTU Agent went on the run.
The preview labels Jack Bauer as, “Fugitive, Soldier, Hero” and it should be very interesting to see which of these roles he spends most of the time filling as the action comes to London.
The trailer also offers up a look at many of the new and returning cast members. Are you looking forward to 24: Live Another Day? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Getting people psyched up for the new 24 series, 24: Live Another Day, may strike many people as something along the lines of Coke commercials. At this point, are you really selling to anyone? We all know whether or not we’re interested in Coke.
Still, despite the idea that pulling in the completely uninitiated may be a questionable pursuit, Fox is pretty clear on the idea that it wants to make sure it doesn’t miss anyone. The new teaser doesn’t exactly give you a lot to go on, perhaps in a way similar to the idea that Coke commercials don’t exactly explain the product. But, it does at least give you the impression that it may pull off the difficult and dangerous attempt of standing next to the previous entries. I’m not absolutely convinced that this is a game we can keep playing, but the trailer looks good.

Jack is back! We saw some intriguing teasers during this year’s Super Bowl and a new batch of stills just a few days ago, but Fox have now released a trailer with actual footage from 24: Live Another Day. The majority of the series was shot in London, and it quickly becomes clear that the city and its landmarks will form an important backdrop to proceedings.
Branded a psychopath and traitor, it’s obvious that Jack is still on the run in this follow-up to season eight’s cliffhanger, while his very ominous, “There’s no going for me” line and the that fact he’s trying to avert a world war serve as proof that this season of 24 may just have the highest stakes yet for the former CTU Agent.

Fox’s event series “24: Live Another Day” has replaced Judy Davis with Michelle Fairley (“Game of Thrones”) in the recurring guest star role of Margot, a British national and the widow of a notorious terrorist. The news broke last week that Davis, who lives in Australia, had to withdraw from the project due to personal family matters which will not allow her to travel at the time needed. Bullet holes in a Union Jack. An up-turned black cab. The Gherkin. A red bus. A red telephone box. A man in a flatcap. The face of Elizabeth Tower (though let's just call it Big Ben for recognition's sake). Explosions. Jack Bauer is in London, and it's not to take the duck tour - it's to shoot a teaser for his new appearance in 24: Live Another Day, out on U.S. TV screens in May.The Us Fox network is bringing Jack back for a “limited series” season of 12 episodes that will find the perpetually time-crunched CTU agent moved to London for a new mission. Somehow, that will involve the Prime Minister, with Stephen Fry taking that role. The cast announced so far includes 24 alumni Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kim Raver and William Devane, plus newcomers to the show John Boyega, Giles Matthey, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Michael Wincott, Yvonne Strahovski and Judy Davis.

It should be no great stretch for Strahovski after her long-term CIA work in Chuck, which surely pretty much qualifies her as a real agent by this point. She joins a cast that already includes 24 alumni Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kim Raver and William Devane, plus newcomers to the show Giles Matthey, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Michael Wincott and Judy Davis. The Weinstein Co. has acquired TV rights to Daniel Stashower’s best-selling narrative nonfiction book, The Hour Of Peril. The historical thriller is eyed as a TV miniseries, with Brendan Deneen and Charles Spicer attached to executive produce through Macmillan Films. Published in February by Minotaur Books, Hour Of Peril tells the true story of how the legendary detective Allan Pinkerton and his most trusted operative, Kate Warne — America’s first female private eye — raced against the clock to detect and prevent a plot to assassinate President-Elect Abraham Lincoln before he could take the oath of office. There have been a couple of other attempts to bring the Pinkerton-Warne story to the small screen in the past few years, including Pinkerton, a limited series from Bob Cochran & Gerard Butler, which was in the works at Starz, and drama series focusing on Warne from Adam Sussman at USA. “12:00 am – 1:00 am”
Written by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran
Directed by Stephen Hopkins
Original airdate November 6, 2001 on Fox
24 changed the landscape of television and it helped to change viewers. Suddenly audiences knew that we should expect more from a show. The pilot episode, “12:00 am – 1:00 am” took off like a shot.
Kiefer Sutherland, in what would become a role of the lifetime, played Jack Bauer a wholly imperfect man whose trying to save a marriage that’s already pretty much broken, who cheated on his wife with a co-worker, can barely control his teenage daughter and also happens to be in charge of protecting the world from evil. “12:00 am – 1:00” opens on Super Tuesday with five concurrent storylines. Jack’s just reunited with his estranged wife Teri and his rebellious daughter, Kim sneaks out of the house to meet with her friend, Janet, and two guys.

Jack Bauer is back! I’ve learned that, after marathon negotiations, Kiefer Sutherland has closed a deal for a new installment of 24 on Fox. With him on board, I hear Fox has greenlighted the real-time drama as a limited series and will announce it during its upfront presentation today. The clock may start ticking again on Fox. I’ve learned that the network is looking to bring back its signature real-time drama 24 as a limited series. Kiefer Sutherland is in talks to reprise his Emmy-winning role as Agent Jack Bauer. No deals are in place, but Fox is eying 24 as part of its recent push in limited event series. Since 24 ended its eight-season run on Fox in 2010, there have been efforts to continue the story as a feature, which ultimately didn’t take off. I hear the idea to do another 24 chapter on TV came from longtime 24 showrunner Howard Gordon, now executive producer on Showtime’s Homeland. I hear he pitched the plan, which would start from scratch with a new story arc, to 24 producers 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine TV as well as Fox, which all jumped on board. Gordon will likely executive produce through his 20th TV-based company Teakwood Lane.

Although plans for a big screen version of the hit television series "24" were put on hold last year , Deadline is now reporting that Kiefer Sutherland may reprise his Agent Jack Bauer role for a television miniseries. The actor is said to be in early talks with former showrunner and executive producer Howard Gordon, who pitched a new take on the show to Fox. Created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, "24" was a production of Real Time Productions and Imagine Television in association with 20th Century Fox Television. Gordon, Evan Katz, Jon Cassar, Manny Coto, David Fury, Kiefer Sutherland and Brian Grazer are the executive producers. It ran for eight seasons, concluding in 2008.
