Rather than showing the progression of youth to old age, Michael Rossato-Bennett’s debut feature "Alive Inside: A Story of Music & Memory" benefits greatly from taking the reverse path -- making the old age of its subjects not a destination, but a starting point for rediscovering the past. By charting the efforts of Dan Cohen and the advances shown in those he's helping to treat, Rossato-Bennett delivers a film that is often tonally divergent, but still provides an affecting look at a growing therapeutic cause. Cohen, founder and executive director of Music & Memory, is the film's entry point into the lives of several Alzheimer’s and dementia victims. He presents a simple hypothesis: Music is a largely untapped resource for assisting patients facing memory loss. Shown in practice at facilities like the Cobble Hill Health Center in Brooklyn, the combination of a pair of headphones and an iPod Shuffle...

Word of another new project labeled as a "high concept" horror film has crossed our desks, and although details are scarce, we figured we'd pass it on so you can keep it on your radar.
Per Deadline, Fox Searchlight Pictures has picked up Zak Olkewicz's Elimination, a horror pitch to be produced by Shawn Levy through his 21 Laps banner. This marks the second studio sale this year for Olkewicz, who made a Dimension deal last spring on Ink and Bone, a script that topped the 2013 Blood List, which ranks genre scripts.
Elimination is said to involve a cerebral game of cat and mouse, but that's all anyone is saying so far.
DanTram Nguyen will oversee for Fox Searchlight and Dan Cohen for 21 Laps.

Looking at the Best Actor Academy Award nominations for the film year 2012, the one miss that clearly cries out for more attention is Liam Neeson’s powerful performance in Joe Carnahan’s excellent survival film The Grey, easily one of the best roles of Neeson’s career.
In Neeson’s case, his lack of a nomination was a case of neglect similar to the Albert Brooks snub in the Best Supporting Actor category for the film year 2011 for Drive(Nicolas Winding Refn, USA).
Along with negligence, other factors commonly prevent outstanding lead acting performances from getting the kind of critical attention they deserve. Sometimes it’s that the performance is in a film not considered “Oscar material” or even worthy of any substantial critical attention.

Shawn Levy, whose last movie was the better-than-expected “Real Steel”, has teamed up with Paramount to snatch up the spec script “Monster Problems” by screenwriter Brian Duffield. Levy will produce, though it’s unlikely he’ll also direct, since he’s already got a couple of films schedule, including “The Internship” with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. “Monster Problems” is described as “a post-apocalyptic road movie in the vein of Mad Max and Zombieland with a John Hughes-esque love story at its center.” Or they could have just cut to the chase and call it “Zombieland with monsters”. Billy Rosenberg and Dan Cohen will produce for Levy’s 21 Laps shingle. The script is from Duffield, who also recently sold “Jane Got a Gun”, with Natalie Portman scheduled to produce and star...

Many fatherhood comedies feature a hard-edged old man who’s tougher than he needs to be, but producer Shawn Levy has picked up a story about a new dad who needs to grow a pair.
Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment production company and Fox 2000 have acquired the upcoming book Man Made by Joel Stein (out May 15), about a guy trying to learn how to be a man so he can be a better role model for his infant son.
The struggles of parenting have been a favorite subject of the Night at the Museum and Real Steel filmmaker, though Levy will Not be directing this one.

20th Century Fox has acquired "The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto" for Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps to produce says Deadline.
The story is being a pitched as a "Big Fish"-esque prequel to "Pinocchio" and follows Geppetto as he endures a life of misfortune, war and adventure all to be with his true love Julia Moon.
"Real Steel" director Levy is also attached to direct from a screenplay by Michael Vukadinovich. Levy is next slated to direct a version of "Frankenstein" for the studio.
Dan Cohen and Billy Rosenberg will produce. The project is not to be confused with a live action "Pinocchio" film setup at Warners last year that Tim Burton expressed interest in.

Exclusive: The spec script went out last night and the mid against high 6-figure deal just closed. Century Fox acquired The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto for Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps. He’s attached to direct the screenplay by Michael Vukadinovich. 21 Laps execs Dan Cohen and Billy Rosenberg brought in the script that’s a prequel to the story of Pinocchio. Geppetto endures a life of misfortune, war and adventure all to be with Julia Moon, his true love. The sweep is reminiscent of Big Fish or The Princess Bride and it creates a fresh way into the Pinocchio story at a time when revisionist fairy tales are dominating the movie landscape. Warner Bros last year set up a live action Pinocchio film that has the interest of Tim Burton. It gives Fox another project with Levy, who most recently directed Real Steel, which opened as last weekend’s top grossing film for DreamWorks.

Continuing her promo tour for »Super«, Ellen headed back to La and stopped by the »Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson« last Wednesday. The interview was refreshingly long with the actress spending more than 15 minutes on the show. It started off with casual small talk about her eating habits, minimalist lifestyle, her mother's tattoo, facing mortal fear on a camping trip as well as the special attraction of the circus Ellen attended while filming »Mouth to Mouth« in Portugal. When she explained that her super hero character is "a bit of a psychopath" and "a little bit of a sexual predator," something unexpected happened. Instead of saying "Go and see that movie" or "Check it out in theaters now" as usual, Ferguson quipped "I don't think I want to see this film." Although the host was clearly joking in this case, it wasn't the best way to support his guest.s project.

With the start of the hype machine for Danny Boyle's new film 127 Hours and a starring role in franchise prequel Rise of the Apes, actor James Franco is a busy guy. Outside of the acting realm, Franco has also been promoting a documentary that he made himself as an Nyu film student way back in 2008. Saturday Night is the first in-depth, behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling the production of an episode of the staple sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live." Recently the doc has been making the festival run but Franco recently told Risky Biz that Oscillioscope picked it up for a limited release in February of 2011. The project comes as a result of an assignment Franco had to make a 7-minute observational documentary about a person "to shape a character." Originally he had his eyes set on artist Dan Cohen, but when plans fell through, his then-recent hosting stint ...

Electric vehicle infrastructure startup Better Place has a compelling business model: Better Place-branded Ev charging stations allow drivers to juice up at home and at work, while gas station-like battery switch stations let users take long trips without stopping to charge--all for a monthly subscription fee. But if Better Place ultimately succeeds, it will be because carmakers decide to go along with the battery switch model.
Renault-Nissan is already working with Better Place on bringing its charging and battery switch stations to Israel, Denmark, Australia, the U.S., and elsewhere in coming years. Whether Better Place's model can scale up, though, will likely depend what China--a leader in the burgeoning Ev market--decides to do.
That's why Better Place partnered with Chinese car maker Chery earlier this year to build switchable battery-capable EVs. As part of the partnership, Better Place and Chery will also try to work with the Chinese government on an Ev pilot project.
