Grease was already “retro” when the film came out in 1978, immersing itself (minus one infamous spandex outfit) in the look and culture of the 1950s. Yet the movie still has a huge audience today, and one of the Pink Ladies, Didi Conn, thinks it’s because — although times may have changed — some of the movie’s themes are timeless, especially when it comes to teenage love. Shelter is the newest addition to the on-screen Harlan Coben Universe. A Young Adult-skewing eight-part thriller, it’s the story of high schooler Mickey Bolitar, who’s recently moved from overseas to his dad’s hometown of Kasselton, New Jersey, where he and his new friends investigate the disappearance of a fellow student. Like any Harlan Coben series, it takes place in a heightened world peopled by memorable villains, shock twists, cliff-hangers, and mysteries that change shape multiple times before they’re solved.
Mickey Bolitar is the star of three novels by Coben – a spin-off trilogy from his hit 11-part book series about Mickey’s uncle Myron Bolitar. Netflix has the rights to that character, so don’t expect to find an actor playing him in the cast rundown below. Here’s more on the actors telling this story.

If you’re a Grease fan who saw the original film in the theater back in the day and has fond memories of singing We Go Together on your way out of the theater, you may want to skip the following sentence: Believe it or not, the iconic movie adaptation of the stage musical opened in theaters 45 years ago. Of course, back in 1978, the movie was set in the past, so it had a feel of sentimentality to it — well, at least until Olivia Newton-John’s stunning transformation at the end. But Didi Conn, who played Frenchy in the film, says that even with the film now set more than six decades in the past, the story still has plenty of relevance in 2023. “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” might not spotlight characters from the original 1978 film like Didi Conn’s Frenchy or Stockard Channing’s Rizzo, but it does set the stage for their impending reign on Rydell High.
Though tampering with any reiteration of the cultural cornerstone that is “Grease” has proven unsuccessful in the past, showrunner Annabel Oakes was clearly up for the challenge. So, how does one begin to cast the characters for a prequel television series based on the beloved movie? Casting directors Leigh Ann Smith and Conrad Woolfe of Indigo Casting accredit showrunner Oakes’ clear vision.
“[Oakes] had lived in that world with these characters for so long,” Smith tells Variety. Adds Woolfe, “We didn’t necessarily feel pressure [casting these characters] because Oakes had done such an incredible job of expanding the universe in her imagination before we even came to the table to do the casting.”

Just how close is the new Paramount+ prequel series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” connected to the beloved 1978 film “Grease?” Pretty close, as it turns out, considering two characters from “Grease” make appearances in the TV show.
Now streaming on Paramount+, “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” takes place four years before the events of “Grease,” before the T-Birds are the coolest guys in school, and before the Pink Ladies even exist. The story centers on Jane (Marisa Davila), Olivia (Cheyenne Isabel Wells), Cynthia (Ari Notartomaso) and Nancy (Tricia Fukuhara), a group of misfits at Rydell, who eventually just lean into the reputations they’ve been given.
They’re the ones who pave the way for the future Pink Ladies we know and love: Rizzo, Frenchie, Marty and Jan. But, as it happens, two of those ladies do get an appearance in this show, because one has a direct...

Apparently, "Grease" is still the word at Paramount+ because an all-new show based on the hit stage musical and its beloved 1978 film adaptation is heading to the streaming service later this year after originally being set up at HBO Max in 2019. But rather than follow the star-crossed students made famous by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, the 10-episode series will focus on the origins of the Pink Ladies, the girl gang made up of Stockard Channing, Dinah Manoff, Jamie Donnelly, and Didi Conn in the first movie (and led by an up-and-coming Michelle Pfeiffer in the underrated sequel).
Titled "Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies," this prequel will be set four years before the original story and follows the first members of the group that challenged the idea of what a woman should be like in the 1950s. The Inbetweeners star James Buckley is continuing to take Cameo by storm in the UK.
The comedy actor joined the video platform in March 2020, where he swiftly gained popularity for his willingness to send personalised videos quoting his famous catchphrases from the sitcom.
Buckley, who played Jay Cartwright on the Channel 4 show, regularly responds to requests for clips, with reports in 2021 revealing that he was responding to as many as 37 requests a day.
At the time, company co-founder Martin Blencowe said that actor “takes it very seriously”, adding: “He’s ready to do the work.”
It seems this has paid off following reports that Buckley has now become the first non-us celebrity to make 1m from the platform.
Confirming the report, Blencowe commented on why Buckley continues to be so successful on the app.

Paramount+ has set the cast for its upcoming “Grease” prequel TV series, “Rise of the Pink Ladies.”
The series will star Marisa Davila as Jane, Cheyenne Isabel Wells as Olivia, Ari Notartomaso as Cynthia, Tricia Fukuhara as Nancy, Shanel Bailey as Hazel, Madison Thompson as Susan, Johnathan Nieves as Richie, Jason Schmidt as Buddy, Maxwell Whittington-Cooper as Wally and Jackie Hoffman as Asst. Principal McGee.
The musical series takes place four years before the original “Grease,” in 1954 before rock ‘n’ roll ruled. Before the T-Birds were the coolest in the school, four fed-up, outcasts dare to have fun on their own terms, sparking a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever.

In addition to Oakes, Marty Bowen will executive produce the streaming show via Temple Hill.

Dancing With the Stars had us a blast with its tribute to Grease, but then the elimination happened so fast. Don't worry—we'll tell you more. On Monday, Oct. 18, the ABC competition series celebrated Grease Night, as the pairs dressed up to channel the 1978 hit film with appropriate costumes and song choices. As E! News exclusively reported, actress Olivia Newton-John made an appearance to offer her perspective as the original movie's Sandy, while Didi Conn and Frankie Avalon—who starred in the film as Frenchy and Teen Angel, respectively—participated in the episode as well. Didi offered pointers to Amanda Kloots, and Frankie sang "Beauty School...

It’s no longer “Summer Nights,” but that’s not going to stop “Dancing with the Stars” from doing a “Grease” Night. The remaining 11 couples will perform to tunes from the iconic musical on Monday because the show is hopelessly devoted to theme nights.
You’ve got all the usual suspects from “Grease” and will be treated to a double dose of one song: Melora Hardin and Artem Chigvintsev will perform their Viennese waltz to “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” while JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson will foxtrot to the reprise. For the first time this season, the Charleston will be performed — Suni Lee and Sasha Farber will do one to “Born to Hand Jive.” The other dance styles are foxtrot, jive, Viennese waltz, rumba and quickstep.
See the full list of dances below.
Jimmie Allen and Emma Slater: foxtrot (“Sandy”)

Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta certainly had amazing chemistry as Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko in Grease, but that doesn't mean they were lovebirds in real life. In a new interview, Olivia, 69, revealed why she never dated the 64-year-old famed actor since every fan of the hit 1978 film thought they'd be the most perfect pair in real life. "We were both with other people when we were filming and I think, respectfully, it just didn’t happen," she shared with Mia Freedman on the No Filter podcast, adding that she would describe their bond as "sisterly." (Photo Credit: Getty Images) Olivia continued, "I think it was good, because I think it kept the tension there and the chemistry. It might have been a real disaster had we decided to date or we had a falling out or something. So I think it was just as well that it didn’t happen.

Even at 40, the film still holds up as a classic and the crowd could not have been more energetic, cheering for our hand-jiving guys and gals and even booing and hissing at...

Grease premiered 40 years ago this year, which means we’ve had the privilege of four full decades to watch and listen to the likes of John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, Didi Conn and the rest of the iconic teen musical’s stellar cast. They reminded us what we all dreamed of high school being like before we actually got there and realized it was, sadly, nothing like we’d expected.
But this isn’t Grease‘s fault. In fact, given the horror stories our older siblings and cousins told us about bullies, detentions, piles of homework and...

He's still got it 40 years later! John Travolta appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, June 13, and graced us all with some dancing from his hit movie Grease. During his sit-down with the TV personality, John, 64, opened up about his iconic dance moves from the 1978 film to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the premiere of the movie in NYC, specifically his end-of-movie "You're the One That I Want" scene with co-star Olivia Newton-John. "The four corners!" John explained to a confused Jimmy. “Like in Pulp Fiction, I grew up with all these novelty dances. So in Grease they needed a step for 'You’re the One That I Want' at the end. So I said, ‘Well, we used to do the four corners, why don’t we do that?’ So the choreographer said, ‘Show it to me,' and I did." The best part, though, came when...

In an exclusive cover story, Closer Weekly celebrates the 40th anniversary of the beloved hit Grease — filled with exclusive interviews from the musical cast who share never-before-heard memories of filming and explain why they'll always be connected to one another. "Can you believe it," John Travolta marvels to Closer about Grease reaching this milestone. "It's the movie that lasts forever!" The film adaptation of the stage musical premiered on June 16, 1978, and it's been a fan favorite ever since. "We didn't have any great expectation and then 40 years later, it's still going," says Olivia Newton-John, who played transfer student Sandy. (Photo Credit: R/R) "It was like a party every day. A lot of the actors had been in Grease on Broadway and they were so excited to be part of it, and that permeated the set," director Randal Kleiser tells Closer. "Grease is about firsts — first car, first love, first breakup.

He's still got it! John Travolta showed off his killer dance moves at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, May 15 alongside rapper 50 Cent. Despite the fact that it's been a staggering 41 years since the actor starred in Saturday Night Fever, it's clear he hasn't lost an ounce of his mojo. Check out the video above to see John's dancing! Ok, so clearly his grooves are a bit more dad-like than debonair, but we still love him and we're not the only ones. 50 Cent took to Twitter shortly after John's guest appearance. "Me and John Travolta partying," the "Just a Lil Bit" artist gushed. "l swear l only came out here because of him." Musical artist Pitbull was originally supposed to perform, but after falling ill, 50 stepped in. The performance took place following the premiere of John's Film, Gotti, in which he played legendary mobster John Gotti and the actor's real-life wife,...

What a perfect family! John Travolta stepped out at the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday, May 15 with his wife, Kelly Preston, and their two kids, daughter Ella, 18, and son Benjamin, 7 — and we can't believe how grown up John and Kelly's children are! For the special event in honor of John and Kelly's upcoming movie Gotti (Ella and Benjamin must be so proud of their famous parents), John donned a black tuxedo with a white shirt and black bowtie. Oh, and we can't forget about how handsome he is with his gray hair for his role of the late mobster John Gotti. Kelly — who plays John's wife in the film, too! — looked stunning in a black strapless ball gown. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) But it's their kids who really stole the show! Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson were the perfect pair in Grease! The iconic movie tells the story about a high school couple who struggle to make their relationship work after they fall madly in love with one another over the summer. In the beloved film, Olivia Newton-John famously played good-girl Sandy and John Travolta portrayed Danny, a grease-loving bad boy. This year, the film turns 40 and in honor of the anniversary, Grease star Didi Conn (aka Frenchy!) dished on some big behind-the-scenes secrets from the 1978 musical. In a new interview, Didi revealed that John was attracted to Olivia during the movie's shoot. "Oh yeah, [he did like her]. What was so much fun was that most of us were older than the characters we were playing so we just stayed in character all day long. So there was an ongoing improvisation happening so the flirting… was fine. It was the context of the characters and the storyline,...

“Crazy Ex Girlfriend” creator and star Rachel Bloom says her part in her new movie, “Most Likely to Murder,” was a fun role to play given how it upends how women are usually depicted on screen.
“It’s a movie in which the lead is a man and I am very much this ‘object’ that he is going after but, like, it’s cool because she’s a very unwilling object and tells him over and over, ‘F— off, you’re pathetic, you’re a piece of s—,'” she told TheWrap’s founder and editor in chief Sharon Waxman at TheWrap’s women leadership conference, Be, in March. “So it’s fun!”
“Most Likely to Murder” stars Adam Pally as a guy named Billy who comes back to his hometown expecting things to be the way it used to be.

But unfortunately for him, everything is different — even his ex, played by Bloom, has moved on to date the former high school outcast. So naturally, Billy wants to prove her new boyfriend is the killer behind a local death.
“He comes back trying to win me back and I play a character who very much isn’t buying into his bulls— anymore and — spoiler alert — never buys into it,” said Bloom, whose husband, Dan Gregor, directed the film and shares a writing credit with Doug Mand.
“[Pally] is basically like the villain of the movie and my husband and his writing partner wrote that character a little bit based on s— that I had said about guys, where it’s like guys are just expecting you to like … buy into their bulls—,” she said. “It was very fun to infuse that part with very real anger and bitterness and not putting up with that character’s bulls—.”

If “My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” were a movie, it might look a lot like “Most Likely to Murder.” Continuing the tradition of TV hitmakers venturing into movie-making, this dark slapstick comedy comes directly from the twisted mind of “Ex-Girlfriend” writer Dan Gregor, husband of the show’s creator, Rachel Bloom. Bloom stars alongside Adam Pally (“The Mindy Project”) in a reversal of her musical show, where she gets to be stalked by a crazy ex-boyfriend. At least, that’s what this first trailer makes it look like.
Pally plays Billy, an out of shape former popular kid who spends his days pining after his ex, Kara (Rachel Bloom). After he discovers Kara is now dating former dorkwad Lowell (Vincent Kartheiser), he begins to suspect Lowell of nefarious doings. Convinced Lowell murdered his mother after maybe seeing him do something creepy one time, Billy embarks on his own unofficial investigation of his new rival.

New Year’s resolutions are a time to work towards a transformation of your body and/or your life. To honor these goals, this month we’re going to look at transformative roles in film. This week we look at some prominent examples of actors playing characters that are much younger than the actors’ actual age.
It’s one thing to mentally prepare to play a character in a movie or a play. It’s another thing to physically transform yourself in order to better identify with the role. Some transformations are only skin deep; extensive makeup or prosthetics may be sufficient to pull of the necessary look. Other transformations are more involved; many actors may take part in weeks, if not months, of preparations for a role. This can include intense training, specialized diets, and exhaustive exercise routines. The end result of an actor going through such a transformation...

Every time you change the channel, it seems that another primetime network has revamped another classic for the small screen — and sometimes, to viewers’ displeasure.
After this week’s Dirty Dancing remake, which, well, wasn’t a fan favorite, we’re taking a look back at what the Internet has had to say about the rest of the primetime musical adaptations, from the low to high notes.
8. Dirty Dancing
The latest addition to the primetime lineup of musical remakes was a little different. ABC’s Dirty Dancing wasn’t technically a musical, and it wasn’t live, as many of the revamps have been.

15 years ago today, Elle Woods taught us to bend and snap. Legally Blonde hit theaters on July 13, 2001, giving Reese Witherspoon her breakout role and giving us a movie that put a pink-loving sorority girl in the place where she’s the outcast: law school. Until she proves all her doubters wrong, that is, in the midst of a murder trial, no less. The comedy’s success led to a 2003 sequel and a stage musical that premiered on Broadway in 2007. Other notable July 13 happenings in pop culture history: • 1923: The Hollywood sign, which then read “Hollywoodland,” was officially dedicated. • 1939: Frank Sinatra made his recording debut in a New York studio, singing “From The Bottom Of My Heart” and “Melancholy Mood” with the Harry James Band. • 1964: The Supremes recorded “Come See About Me” in “Hitsville U.S.A.,” Motown’s first headquarters. • 1984: The Muppets Take Manhattan and The Last Starfighter opened in theaters.

Carly Rae Jepsen made one of 2015's standout pop albums, Emotion, on her own terms, and she's back with more bold choices for 2016. On Sunday night, Jepsen starred in Fox's megasuccessful Grease: Live as Frenchy, Rydell High's lovable, cotton-candy-haired, beauty-school dropout. And Jepsen was joined by none other than the original Frenchy herself, the charming Didi Conn, who guest-starred as the wise waitress at the diner who consoled her young counterpart through the end of her beautician aspirations. Vulture caught up with a still-buzzing Jepsen the day after the show about being in love with Conn, the surreality of being serenaded by Boyz II Men, and Vanessa Hudgens's courageous performance. How surreal was it playing Frenchy opposite the original Frenchy, Didi Conn? It was just as surreal in rehearsals as it was on live TV. It's intimidating to play a character like that, who's so beloved, and to have...

Fox's Grease: Live production was as flashy and fun as one would hope the adaptation to be. Vanessa Hudgens's father, Greg, died this weekend after battling stage 4 cancer. He was 65. "I am so sad to say that last night my daddy, Greg passed away from stage 4 cancer," she wrote on Twitter. Eerie question: What do The Sound of Music Live!, Peter Pan Live!, The Wiz Live!, and Grease Live! have in common? Eerier answer: They are all good. Seriously. They're glitzy live productions with some tepid acting (particularly in the case of The Sound of Music), but you tend to forgive their awkward moments because the live gimmick is, above all else, cute. It's like watching expensive, well-rehearsed high school theater. And that's a good thing. And it makes you miss high school theater. Fox's Grease Live!, which aired live on the East Coast on Sunday night, added nothing to what we already know of the classic 1978 movie musical (aside from a limp new ballad chirped by a pleasant-enough Carly Rae Jepsen), but it had all the infectiousness and emoji-big smiles you need from three hours of live musical entertainment.
