The comedy world and Law & Order: Svu veterans both turned to social media Sunday to pay tribute to Richard Belzer, the legendary comedian-turned-beloved television detective who starred as John Munch for over 20 years.
Marisky Hargitay wrote on Instagram, “Goodbye my dear, dear friend. I will miss you, your unique light, and your singular take on this strange world. I feel blessed to have known you and adored you and worked with you, side by side, for so many years. How luck the angels are to have you. I can hear them laughing already.

Where most shows of the pre-streaming era poured time and resources into year-end episodes and Christmas specials, for “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” everything went into Halloween. As producer and star Melissa Joan Hart told IndieWire via Zoom, “Of the 26 [episodes] we would do that year, Halloween was always the biggie. That’s when the budget would open up and we’d spend a lot of money on it.”
The proof is in the petrifying pudding, with “Sabrina” creating some of the most unique, inventive, and memorable Halloween episodes of the 1990s. Whether it was alt-rock band 10,000 Maniacs performing during Season 2’s “A River of Candy Corn Runs Through It” or Sabrina giving Frankenstein’s monster and the Bride of Frankenstein couple’s counseling in Season 5’s “The Halloween Scene,” these episodes showcased not only a blend of spooky fun for the whole family, but also an uptick in star power and IP recognition.

"Mystery Science Theater 3000" officially ended its run in 1999, but never really went away.
The "watching bad movies with several funny friends" premise was simply too good to leave behind, and every cast member on the show participated in "MST3K"-like projects for years thereafter. The show's creator, Joel Hodgson, teamed up with Mary Jo Pehl, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Elvis Weinstein to create "Cinematic Titanic," a riffing show wherein the cast was seen in silhouette, like on "MST3K," and were beholden to an evil, ill-defined corporate entity. Meanwhile, Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy formed "The Film Crew" wherein the...

Robert Downey Jr. announced the death of his late father, Robert Downey Sr., director of the underground film “Putney Swope,” on Instagram Wednesday, calling him “a true maverick filmmaker.”
His son revealed “dad passed peacefully in his sleep after years of enduring the ravages of Parkinson’s” on Tuesday night. Downey Jr. noted that his father “remained remarkably optimistic throughout” his battle with Parkinson’s.
He went on to share a tribute to his step-mother, Rosemary Rodgers-Downey, who he called “a saint” and offered his thoughts and prayers.
“According to my stepmom’s calculations, they were happily married for just over 2000 years,” his son said.
American journalist Bilge Ebiri shared his tribute to Downey Sr. on Twitter, calling him a “pioneering underground filmmaker” and “a true original.”

Shortly after the news broke on Wednesday that Robert Downey Sr., the director of the anti-establishment satirical classic Putney Swope had died, his son Robert Downey Jr., paid tribute to his father, calling him “a true maverick filmmaker.”
Downey Jr. went on to say that his father had suffered the ravages of Parkinson’s disease, but died in his sleep. He also added some levity in a tribute to his stepmother, Rosemary Rogers-Downey: “According to my stepmoms calculations, they were happily married for just over 2000 years. Rosemary Rogers-Downey, you are a saint, and our thoughts and prayers are with you.”
The Downey family scion also posted a black and white portrait of his father above the message.

In the not too distant past — November 24th, 1988, A.D. — a moderately successful stand-up comedian named Joel Hodgson slipped on a jumpsuit. He then spent a few hours on a Minneapolis Uhf station making fun of the terrible movies Invaders from the Deep and Revenge of the Mysterions from Mars, alongside a couple of handmade robot puppets. Only a handful of lucky Minnesotans were watching Ktma that Thanksgiving night, exactly 30 years ago. They all saw the birth of a pop culture phenomenon: a charmingly cheap-looking show that, no joke, changed television.

Presenting two real-life stories from my days of yore, although names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty.
Story The First:
I knew a girl in high school – I wouldn’t say we were friends, but she was someone who had never participated in the Piggy horrors. Sally was an A+ student, on the track to an Ivy League school. Pretty (but not gorgeous) and popular (but quiet about it), she came to me one day and said that she needed to talk to me privately. I was surprised… and a bit suspicious. What did she want? But because Sally had never been overtly mean to me, even though she was part of the clique that instigated most of the callous cruelties upon me, and because I still hoped to be “accepted,” and I wanted to believe for some reason she was about to warn me...

Synapse Films made many viewers happy last year with their Collector's Edition Steelbook Blu-ray release of Dario Argento's Phenomena, aka Creepers, and if you didn't pick up the Steelbook, you'll soon have a chance to purchase the film in a standard (but still extraordinary) two-disc Blu-ray this September, along with The Creep Behind the Camera.
Featuring three separate cuts of the film, the Phenomena Blu-ray will be released on September 12th, the same day of Synapse Films' Blu-ray and DVD release of The Creep Behind the Camera, which explores the stranger than fiction story of the making of The Creeping Terror (which is included in the special features with a new 2K scan). Patton Oswalt is thrilled be part of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Netflix reboot – but his younger self would be horrified at the casting, as he told Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday's Tonight Show.
The comedian plays the bouffant-sporting "TV's Son of TV's Frank," a role first portrayed by Frank Conniff on the B-movie-bashing cult comedy. Watching his revived series now, Oswalt hears a judgmental inner voice from his past. "I'm just very self-conscious," he says. "I still have the 22-year-old me in my head, going, 'This is not Frank Conniff.

A Kickstarter-funded reboot of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” is more than halfway to its funding goal — and creator Joel Hodgson hopes that a new cast will help introduce the ’90s cable phenomenon to a new generation. “The theory is to refresh it for a new audience but still invite the original people to come back creatively and do cameos,” Hodgson told TheWrap. Most recently, Patton Oswalt joined the project to write and play TV’s Son of TV’s Frank, the offspring of the character from the original show played by Frank Conniff. Hodgson announced the most well-known name so far on Monday: Comedian and frequent Twitter ranter Patton Oswalt is going to be TV's Son of TV's Frank. Oswalt is a last-minute addition to the cast. According to Hodgson, he and Oswalt emailed back and forth a bit after the Kickstarter campaign began, with Hodgson offering him a guest writing spot and then an on-camera role (Oswalt's response: "Oh My God"). He'll join previously announced cast members Felicia Day, who will play Kinga, the daughter of original series baddie Dr. Clayton Forrester (and the granddaughter of Pearl Forrester), Jonah Ray, who will be their host/victim, and Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn,...

Welcome to the March 25, 2015 edition of Outrage Watch, HitFix's (almost) daily rundown of all the things folks are peeved about in entertainment. Today's top story: do we have a new "Gamergate" on our hands? "The new Gamergate: Angry white men are trying to shut down diverse comics," reads the headline of a piece written by Salon's Matt Binder, who claims that "right-wing parasites, misogynist Men’s Rights activists, and opportunistic grifters" including Breitbart contributor Milo Yiannopoulos (many of whom, he alleges, probably don't even read comics) are taking aim at attempts to add more women and racial minorities to mainstream comics, most notably the woman Thor. "The fact that a woman playing Thor would cause such outrage, when even a frog is able to take up the title of Thor sans controversy, is absurd," Binder writes before citing numerous other examples of targeted attacks by the trolls in question. Elvis Weinstein (Tom Servo, Dr. Erhardt), Frank Conniff (TV’s Frank), and Mary Jo Pehl (Pearl Forrester), Cinematic Titanic continues the tradition of riffing on ‘the unfathomable’, ‘the horribly great’, and the just plain ‘cheesy’ movies from the past.
Three years ago when Cinematic Titanic came to the St. Louis area.s St. Charles Family Arena, they riffed on the deliciously riffable 1964 gem Santa Claus Conquers The Martians. The next year they chose a 1968 Kaiju I was unfamiliar with called War Of The Insects (aka Genocide) but...

The Big Bang Theory is revisiting the "Fun with Flags" episode and bringing back LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton to make it extra special.
Oh. Yes. Sofia Vergara is getting into the drama-importing business. The Modern Family star has sold a remake of Argentinian procedural Mueres Asesinas (Killer Women), about a law enforcement agency that's focuses on murders committed by women with a focus on their motivations.
In reaction to Mitt Romney's threats to cut funding for PBS, fans are organizing a Million Muppet March scheduled for November 3.
After repeatedly threatening to quit 30 Rock, Alec Baldwin fought to keep the Emmy-winning comedy from ending, offering to take a salary cut to ensure a full seventh season along with an eighth.
I'd be excited about the news that a Truth or Consequences and Treasure Hunt revival is in the works...

The channel co-founded by Al Gore said it is launching the week-in-review show John Fugelsang: So That Happened on Friday at 6 Pm. And Fugelsang tweeted today that his as-yet-unnamed nightly primetime series will debut on the channel in November. A regular guest-host on Current TV the past few months, the comedian and former America’s Funniest Home Videos co-host has also appeared on CNN, Fox News Channel’s Fox & Friends and MSNBC’s The Ed Show. Fugelsang is also scheduled to appear with Gore on Current’s coverage of the upcoming presidential debates starting Wednesday. Clint Eastwood took the stage at the Republican National Convention Thursday night (Aug. 30) -- and promptly gave viewers what may turn out to be the weirdest thing we see all campaign season. He rambled and interacted with an empty chair, pretending it was President Obama, for roughly 10 minutes. The reactions have been swift.
"This seat's taken," tweets President Obama, along with the picture to the right.
Patton Oswalt tweets:
"To restore balance to the Universe, Obama must have Tommy Chong onstage at the DNC talking to a steak.""I love you, Clint. I always will. But you changed the theme of the Rnc from 'We Built This' to 'I Can't Watch This'.""'If Clint Eastwood ever talks to a chair on national TV, people will need a way to reassure each other'" -- inventor of Twitter, March 2006 "
Seth Meyers tweets:
"'Ramble' #What'sOnClint'sTeleprompter" "I hope invisible Obama stays on stage for Romney's speech.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is one of those shows that got its hooks into me quickly, but eventually I just lost track of. I’m not even sure how the timing of it worked out, but somehow, I just didn’t seem to watch it anymore.
Die-hard fans may count themselves as far more excited to see these multi-film releases hitting shelves, but I’m glad to get the chance to touch base with a series I once loved, but missed out on.
The Xxiii release showcases four films, naturally of varying genres, plus a nice selection of bonus features, going so far as to somehow include the MST3K-ified The Incredible Mr. Limpet (which I must have seen 5,000 times as a kid) as a bonus.
It’s the usual brand of off-beat comedy commentary, with Joel, Mike, Tom Servo, and Crow T. Robot letting these old works of “art...

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Presents: "Manos" The Hands of Fate
DVD

Starring Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Kevin Murphy, Frank Conniff, Mike Nelson
Release Date: September 13, 2011
"Well... just in case you forgot, ladies and gentlemen... 'Manos': The Hands of Fate."
Yes folks, it's the movie that is often voted as not only the worst movie ever mocked by the valiant crew of the Satellite of Love, but also the worst movie ever made Period. A movie so bad that everyone involved in its making either died of shame or vanished from the face of the earth. A movie so godawful that it provided the basis for the single greatest episode of one of the best television shows in the history of civilization. Now it's back on DVD in a two-disc set devoted entirely to this movie and the classic of cathode comedy that brought it...

Former Vice President Dick Cheney’s 576-page book, “In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir” hit bookshelves Tuesday. Cheney told NBC “there are gonna be heads exploding all over Washington,” on Monday night. Celebrities, politicians, late night comedians and took to Twitter this week to respond.
Michael Ian Black: Dick Cheney looks surprisingly good for somebody who will probably be dead in two years.
Ari Fleischer: Cheney & Powell rehashing differences reminds me of old Godzilla v King Kong movies.

MST3K Vs. Gamera: Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol. Xxi
DVD
Starring Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Kevin Murphy, Frank Conniff, Jim Mallon, Patrick Brantseg
Release Date: August 2, 2011
One of the many reasons why Shout! Factory has become my new favorite DVD distributor, in addition to their awesome reissue of vintage drive-in cult classics from producer Roger Corman, is because of the great love and respect they have shown Mystery Science Theater 3000 since taking over the license to reissue classic episodes of the show from Rhino several years ago.
In terms of overall presentation Shout!'s MST3K box sets have trumped Rhino in every way possible. I've spoken before at great length about how Mystery Science Theater 3000 was not only one of my favorite television shows of all time, but also a major influence on me as a person, and if you doubt that assertion you may feel free to...

This week, Shout! Factory releases Mystery Science Theater 3000 Vol. Xix (yes, that's 19), featuring four more classic episodes from the show that made it Ok to talk back to the screen: Devil Doll, Devil Fish, Ed Wood's Bride of the Monster, and Phil Tucker's infamous Robot Monster. A writer for most of the show's run, Mary Jo Pehl (who played the evil Mrs. Forrester during the SyFy run of MST3K), sat down to talk about her history with the cult cable classic as well as her current movie-riffing project Cinematic Titanic, which teams her with MST3K creator Joel Hodgson and fellow show vets Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Elvis Weinstein on live shows and DVD releases.

I feel as if this Mystery Science Theater 3000 review is the toughest one I’ve ever had to do. Not because the films themselves are hard to review. I’m one in the belief that MST3K works on so many levels and am always in the mood to watch the gang rip into some of the shittiest films in the history of filmdom. To review the films would be benign, mainly because do you review the films themselves or do you review the content of the comedy? And how can one review comedy in general?
Mystery Science Theater 3000 Volume Xviii has some of the best episodes, one of which I had forgotten existed up until watching it again. Shame on me, I know. The films are Lost Continent, Crash of the Moons, The Beast of Yucca Flats and Jack Frost (no, it’s not the Michael Keaton film...

Many have asked to know exactly what panels I’ll be guesting on and MCing this coming weekend (September 3-6) during Atlanta’s supermegamassivegeekorama DragonCon.
Below, you’ll find a list of the panels, the official DragonCon descriptions of said panels, and my commentary on what actually may or may not be happening.
Please Note: I will not only have copies of my children’s book There’S A Zombie In My Treehouse with me and available for sale, but I will also have a handful of Super-rare CDs with a “fan”-chosen selection of Crapoke tracks. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. All you have to do is have cash on hand, come up to me, and say, “Hey Ken. Where’s that CD of Crapoke? I’d like to buy one.” And with those magic words, A CD Shall Appear, we shall exchange your cash for it,...

Take one barely skilled Chinese martial artist. Add a beefy hunk of traditional blaxploitation, and top off with a complete selection of Asian actors who played bad guys on M*A*S*H. Stir rigorously.
Bake for two hours under the high heat of Mystery Science Theater 3000-inspired quips, and you end up with the new live DVD from Cinematic Titanic, "East Meats Watts."
This latest release from MST3K veterans Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, Josh Weinstein, Mary Jo Pehl and Frank Conniff features a clunky 70's mess on celluloid mocked before an affectionate live audience. While Cinematic Titanic's earlier DVD releases all pack more than the U.N.-mandated share of laughs, the energy provided by the comics' interactions with the crowd make this the comic troupe's most successful DVD release so far.

When Comic-Con began 40 years ago, it was pretty much a bunch of guys and their comic books. My how times have changed. Now it's a multi-day, multi-million dollar tent pole event. Gaming, TV, and movies are all using the convention as a springboard to success, though not all succeed. It's less a comic convention now and more a convention about what would interest comic book fans. A big recurring theme this year was not just the increase in exposure for other meduims, but also the growing influence of the internet on each of them.
In his panel for The Frog Princess and Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo, John Lasseter announced that Disney/Pixar would be releasing exclusive content to their Facebook page with shorts and behind the scenes footage of the animation process.
Huge on YouTube, the comedy group Derrick Comedy was picked up by Roadside Attractions for the feature film Mystery Team.

I am a huge fan of bad movies. Let's just say a nerd for bad B-budget/cult flicks. I used to watch theses guys religiously and I am very pleased to bring news of the 20th Anniversary of Mystery Science Theater 3000, some shaky video (Below) from S.D.
