For actors, the biz of showbiz involves selling yourself to both the public and the industry at the same time. Packaging your persona and your talent as a "brand" or "type" can lead to the dreaded type-casting problem, of course. Yet it's a necessary evil, a way to get the job by proving you can already do the job.
Throughout his career, Jack Lemmon became known as a consummate comic actor: an affable, lovable everyman who had impeccable timing and was a master of character-based humor, picking up the baton from folks like Cary Grant and Bob Hope and paving the way for people like Gene Wilder and Ben Stiller. His association with director Billy Wilder resulted in comedy masterpieces such as "Some Like It Hot" and "The Apartment," and together with Walter Matthau he made the definitive version of "The Odd Couple."

All but inventing the ‘new liberal exposé’ suspense format, James Bridges’ smart and effective thriller began as a star showcase with a political message. Its fictional nuclear accident hit screens just before a similar real nuclear accident happened in real life, at Three Mile Island. Historical synchronicity? Box office serendipity? One thing is certain — the show strongly affected the way we view the ‘miracle’ of nuclear-generated power.

Pop culture comes to life in St. Louis next month! It’s the Wizard World Comic Con May 22nd through the 24th at America’s Center downtown (701 Convention Plaza – St. Louis, Mo 63101), and boy oh boy, do they have an amazing line-up of guests!
Sure, you got the comic artists and cosplayers, wrestlers, a St. Louis Ram, a Power Ranger, and of course the ubiquitous Walking Dead stars, but what We Are Movie Geeks is most excited about are the celebrities from movies that will be on hand: Horror legend George Romero, Sharknado legend Tara Reid, horror hostess with the mostest (if you know what I mean) Elvira, Guardians Of The Galaxy tough guy Dave Bautista, Henry the serial killer himself Michael Rooker, Do The Right Thing’s ‘Buggin Out’ Giancarlo Esposito. Lord of the Rings Trilogy’s Pippin Billy Boyd, Captain America squeeze Hayley Atwell, and Silent Bob’s buddy Jay aka Jason Mewes.

Jane Fonda movies on TCM: ‘The China Syndrome,’ ‘Klute,’ and Jean-Luc Godard drama ‘Tout Va Bien’ among highlights (photo: Jane Fonda in ‘Klute’) Turner Classic Movies’ 2014 "Summer Under the Stars" kicked off earlier today, August 1, with a day-long series of Jane Fonda movies. Still reviled by American right-wingers because of her 1972 trip to North Vietnam while the United States was at war with that country — she was photographed seated on an anti-aircraft battery — but admired by others for her liberal views, anti-war activism, and human rights advocacy, the two-time Best Actress Academy Award winner has enjoyed a highly eclectic film career, eventually becoming a rarity among rarities: Jane Fonda is the child of a film star (Henry Fonda) who not only became a film star in her own right, but who went on to become an even bigger screen legend than her famous parent. Mike Gray, one of the co-writers on the Oscar-nominated film "The China Syndrome," passed away on Tuesday (April 30) of heart failure in his Hollywood Hills home, his family tells the Los Angeles Times. The author, activist and documentarian was 77.
Gray began working on "The China Syndrome," a 1979 film about a cover-up at a nuclear power plant, after reading books and speaking with scientists about the dangers of nuclear power. His film proved incredibly timely: Three weeks after the movie opened, a nuclear actor at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania went into partial meltdown.
Gray, who co-wrote the film with T.S. Cook and James Bridges, told the Chicago Tribune in 1998, "I meant 'China Syndrome' to educate people about what I'd found ... that our heavy reliance on nuclear plants hadn't been clearly thought through."
At the time of his death, he was working on a still-untitled documentary about former Black Panther and...

Gray developed the China Syndrome screenplay after researching the dangers of nuclear power. It turns out the timing was uncanny. Just three weeks after the opening of the film starring Jack Lemmon, Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas, a nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania went into partial meltdown. “I meant China Syndrome to educate people about what I’d found … that our heavy reliance on nuclear plants hadn’t been clearly thought through,” Gray told the Chicago Tribune in 1998. Gray co-wrote the script with T.S. Cook and James Bridges. Gray also collaborated with Chicago’s Second City comedy group founder Howard Alk on several documentary films, including...
