Updated, September 20 at 6:55pm Et: Paramount confirmed the following news to IndieWire via email.
Published earlier: Will Smith is set to produce an adaptation of the novel “Brilliance,” with two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy making her narrative feature directorial debut.
Four-time Emmy winner Obaid-Chinoy most recently helmed Episodes 4 and 5 of Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel.” The adaptation of Marcus Sakey’s novel is produced by Paramount Pictures and has been dubbed a “passion project” for Oscar winner Smith and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who collaborated on “I, Robot,” “I Am Legend,” and “Hancock.”
The book centers on Nick Cooper, a federal agent who works for the Department of Analysis and Response and is tasked with tracking down the 1 percent of non-neurotypical people deemed “abnorms,” or “Brilliants,” who are born with special powers. The character Nick is a parent of a Brilliant daughter and is also an abnorm himself, in a “Blade Runner”-esque twist.

When Will Smith unexpectedly dropped out of Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures’ Brilliance, the studios were left scrambling to find a replacement. For a while, that replacement appeared to be Oscar winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), who had been approached by the studios and, according to some sources, was keenly interested in the project. Now, according to Nikki Finke, however, Leto has opted to walk away from the film.
Finke, formerly of Deadline, reports that Leto met with director Julius Onah on Monday before deciding to turn down the lead role. For now, Noomi Rapace (the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is the only actor attached to the project.

The upcoming adaptation of the sci-fi novel Brilliance seems to be having a hard time maintaining a lead actor. Last week we learned that Dallas Buyers Club Academy Award winner Jared Leto was in talks to replace Will Smith in the Legendary Pictures-produced project, and now new reports have surfaced saying that Leto is out too. This news comes to us from Nikki Finke, which says that actor met with director Julius Onah about Brilliance earlier this week, but he ultimately decided that he didn't want to be a part of the movie. The film would have seen him play Nick Cooper, a federal agent with special abilities who lives in a world where 1% of the population is gifted as well (and they're called Brilliants). The story finds Cooper on the hunt for one of these Brilliants, who also happens to be a terrorist bent on creating mass hysteria and...

Jared Leto is in talks to replace Will Smith in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Brilliance. Leto just met with director Julius Onah, so things are still early, but if he signs on he will join Noomi Rapace onscreen. Smith dropped out of the project to take the lead in the untitled Ridley Scott-produced NFL concussion movie.
David Koepp wrote the script, which is an adaptation of the novel of the same name, written by Marcus Sakey. Here is a plot description of the book:

With an Oscar sitting at home (assuming he hasn’t lent it out to someone or left it in the back of a cab), Jared Leto has taken some time to figure out his next move after the awards-grabbing Dallas Buyers Club. If the producers of Brilliance have any say in the matter, he’ll be filling the lead role in the novel adaption.Brilliance, you may recall, is the film that Will Smith was attached to lead until recently, when he dropped out to focus on other things. Adapted from Marcus Sakey’s novel by David Koepp, it’s set in a world where some people are born with extraordinary abilities. These X-Men “brilliants” largely choose to use their powers for good, but one bad seed is rallying others to his cause, looking to ignite a civil war. Enter federal agent Nick Cooper, another of the brilliants, who is...

Will Smith will not longer star in Universal and Legendary Pictures' upcoming adaptation of Marcus Sakey's sci-fi/superhero novel Brilliance. According to reports, the actor has left the project.
With a screenplay by David Koepp, Brilliance is being directed by Julius Onah. The film follows a federal agent with a unique set of skills who is drafted to hunt down a terrorist who is out to start a civil war. Here's a full synopses:
In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called “brilliants,” and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists.

It looks like there's one blockbuster out there now without it's star. The franchise-starter Brilliance already had Will Smith involved in a massive story involving agents pursuing the gifted in the future. But it looks like Will Smith's Big Willie Style might not be suited to the Julius Onah-directed film. Nope, today is the day Brilliance shines just a bit dimmer. Smith has backed out of Brilliance, according to a report from Deadline. Adapted from the novel by Marcus Sakey, the David Koepp-penned movie was set up at Universal by Legendary Pictures, who themselves are flush off the success of Godzilla. The film was to concern a separate group of evolved humans with special skills, called "brilliants," and the agent tasked with hunting them down to eliminate a terrorist threat. Smith would have played agent Nick Cooper, but now he ain't playin' nobody, as no reason was...

When Will Smith turned down the chance to reprise his role in Independence Day 2, it looked as if he'd opted to make a different science fiction movie instead. He'd been heavily linked with the movie take on Marcus Sakey's book Brilliance, a mix of sci-fi and superheroes that tells of the small proportion of the population that have special gifts, and become known as 'brilliants'.
Smith had been linked with the role of federal agent Nick Cooper in the film, whose talent is hunting down terrorists. And the project had also been linked with Noomi Rapace.

Variety reports that Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, 34, is set to co-star opposite Will Smith in Julius Onah‘s sci-fi thriller “Brilliance.” The David Koepp-scripted film is based on the first installment of Marcus Sakey’s trilogy, which is set in a world where, since 1980, one percent of people (known as “brilliants”) have been born with special powers, such as invisibility or mind reading. Among those gifted individuals is Nick Cooper (Smith), a federal agent who uses his abilities to hunt down terrorists. Will Smith’s reputation for guaranteed box office returns took quite a knock with the disappointing performance of Men In Black 3, followed by the disastrous After Earth. Legendary Pictures are hoping for a different result with Brilliance, however, which Smith has been closely circling for a number of months. To boost their chances, they’ve now locked the excellent Noomi Rapace into the picture, too.

With Will Smith now confirmed to star in sci-fi thriller Brilliance, the filmmakers have been looking to fill the cast around him. They’ve picked a veteran of another well known, if controversial, science fiction film, with Prometheus’ Noomi Rapace set to take the other lead role.Brilliance, which David Koepp has adapted from Marcus Sakey’s book (part one of – shock! – a series), is set in world where 1% of the population has developed enhanced cognitive abilities. Labelled “brilliants”, they have both helped and harmed the human race, as some have turned their advanced skills to terrorism. Smith is set to play federal agent Nick Cooper, a “brilliant” who has put his own powers to use hunting the bad seeds down.Rapace’s role wasn’t made clear in The Wrap’s story on her casting, so we’ll have to wait to find out if she’s playing a friend or foe to Smith.

Will Smith is in talks to join Legendary Pictures' big screen adaptation of Brilliance. A couple of weeks ago the studio announced that Julius Onah will be directing the film from a script written by David Koepp. If Smith joins the project, it will be big deal for the movie, because people will be more likely to go see it.
The story is described as being like the X-Men, "set in a world where a rare set of people are born with extraordinary abilities and are called 'brilliants.' At the center of the story is a federal agent with great hunting gifts who is drafted to hunt down a terrorist, another such brilliant who intends to start a civil war."
This has the potential to be a really cool film. There is also going to be a trilogy of books that I'm sure the studio hopes will be a franchise.

Oz The Great and Powerful producer Joe Roth is set to develop a new film for Legendary Pictures called Brilliance. The movie is going to be based on a novel of the same name written by Marcus Sakey.
The story has been described as being like the X-Men franchise, and it's "set in a world where a rare set of people are born with extraordinary abilities and are called "brilliants." At the center of the story is a federal agent with great hunting gifts who is drafted to hunt down a terrorist, another such brilliant who intends to start a civil war."
The first book isn't set to be released until July and it's intended to be a trilogy. Sounds like it it could be a good movie. Roth seems to have a good eye for big budget, entertaining tent pole films, so it will be interesting to see how this movie develops.

Legendary Pictures is getting into the lucrative superhero franchise biz with Marcus Sakey’s upcoming book “Brilliance”. Yes, it’s a book about superheroes that isn’t based on a comic book or, as Hollywood trades like to call it, “graphic novels”. The book won’t even be released yet, but Legendary has already snapped up the movie rights, with Joe Roth and Palak Patel attached to produce. So what’s it all about? Think “The X-Men” cross with “24″: In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called “brilliants,” and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has...

Legendary Pictures has bought Marcus Sakey’s novel Brilliance, about children who are born savants with special powers. (Think X-Men!)
In the book, the special children are called “brilliants.” They are capable of exceptional things, both good and bad. The focus is on one skilled federal agent who tries to become a master hunter of terrorists. He attempts to pursue another brilliant who uses his powers to start a civil war.
Here’s a more detailed synopsis:

(William Cameron Menzies, 1936, Network, PG)
This sci-fi classic, as much a landmark of the genre as Lang's Metropolis and Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, is the only major film to be directed by William Cameron Menzies, the man for whom David O Selznick coined the title "production designer" for his role on Gone with the Wind. Both prophetic and weirdly dated, it anticipates a second world war breaking out in 1940 that reduces Britain to a nation of fiercely competing warrior tribes which in turn are replaced by an advanced society of scientists and engineers based in the Middle East. Intellectually confused, perhaps (possibly reflecting its author Hg Wells's attraction to authoritarianism), it is undoubtedly one of cinema's great visionary works with sets that still make you gasp. Ralph Richardson and Raymond Massey co-star, and among the fascinating special features are a commentary by Nick Cooper, a TV programme by sci-fi writer Brian Aldiss on Wells,...

Exclusive: Fox International Channels has mixed news for pay TV network execs who wonder whether their channel names have any meaning overseas, especially in fast-growing developing countries. Just a handful of networks resonated with the 14,000 respondents to a recent online survey conducted by Millward Brown Optimorn. The study included 12 markets: Mexico, Brazil, Portugal, UK, Italy, Spain, Poland, India, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia. Discovery was the best-known channel, with 85% of the respondents saying that they are familiar with it. As part of the most globally focused Big Media company News Corp, it’s not surprising that Fox-related services did especially well in the study. It has five of the seven most recognized channels with National Geographic (82%), Fox (61%), Foxlife (44%), FX (33%) and Star (26%). (The list also includes Sony’s Axn, familiar to 52% of respondents.) But the vast majority of channels are familiar to less than one in five people surveyed. The data...
