Have you ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes of your favorite television show? Olivia Williams, a guest star on the hit NBC sitcom Friends, recently opened up about her “harrowing” time on set.
Even though Friends’ last episode aired in 2004, the sitcom is still a popular choice for comfort and comedy in today’s world. Getting cast as a guest star, thus, must have been a huge thrill back in the nineties. It meant getting closer to the main stars and also becoming more widely recognized. Some actors, though, have been candid about their less-than-refined experiences.

The Frasier reboot’s first season was successful enough for Paramount+ to invest in a second season. Now that season 2 has been secured, Kelsey Grammer is opening up about what he’d like to see happen. He’s also sharing the characters he’d like to see turn up in the reboot. While Daphne Moon, portrayed by Jane Leeves in Frasier, and Dr. Niles Crane, portrayed by David Hyde Pierce, have opted not to return, Grammer isn’t counting out adding more members of their family to the reboot. He recently revealed the Moon family member he’d love to see in season 2.
The ‘Frasier’ reboot needs more Moon family energy
While Jane Leeves has shown absolutely no interest in returning to the Frasier reboot, her side of the family is being represented by her son David Crane, who is actively involved in the series. David, the son of Daphne...

Norman Lear, who recently passed away at the age of 101, transformed the network television sitcom in the 1970s by confronting America's cultural contentiousness head-on and daring viewers to laugh at a bigot like Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" or the white-folks-hating George Jefferson on "The Jeffersons." People were more than ready to accept this challenge. "All in the Family" was the top-rated show on television for six of its nine seasons, while "The Jeffersons" ranked in the top 10 for four of its remarkable 11 seasons. Along with "Good Times," "Sanford and Son," "Maude," "One Day at a Time" and "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear basically dominated the decade. It was a creative hot streak that's never been matched and one that Lear could never replicate.
After the 1978 premiere of "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear went ice cold. "The Baxters" and "Palmerstown, USA" only hung around for two seasons, while "Hanging In" and "aka...

Matthew Perry died from the acute effects of the anesthetic ketamine, according to an autopsy released Friday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office.
The results of the autopsy listed drowning, coronary artery disease and buprenorphine (used to treat opioid addiction) effects as contributing factors. The manner of death was ruled an accident. There were no signs of foul play.
“At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression,” the report, obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, states.
The report says that none of the following substances were detected: alcohol, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, Pcp and fentanyl.
The report describes Perry as being on ketamine infusion therapy with the most recent therapy reportedly one-and-a-half weeks before his death.

David Hyde Pierce says that his absence from the Frasier reboot wasn’t due to hard feelings — but a busy schedule and a new story to tell that made him decide to pass on the Paramount+ reboot.
The actor, who notably played Niles Crane, the younger brother to Kelsey Grammer’s Dr. Frasier Crane, opened up about his decision not to return while speaking to the Los Angeles Times about his upcoming role in the Julia Child series Julia and in the late Stephen Sondheim’s final work, Here We Are.
“I never really wanted to go back,” he told the outlet. “It’s not like I said, ‘Oh, I don’t ever want to do that again.’ I loved every moment. It was that I wanted to do other things.”

Many talented directors stood behind the camera to direct the cast of Friends throughout the series’ 10-season run. However, did you know that former 1970s teen idol Robby Benson helmed half a dozen episodes?
Robby Benson directed some of ‘Friends’ early episodes
Robby Benson was a wildly popular teen idol in the 1970s. In seasons one and three, Friends, Robby Benson also directed some of the series’ funniest episodes. Under his guidance, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and the late Matthew Perry flourished.
The episodes were “The One With the Ick Factor.” He followed that up in season three with “The One With All the Jealousy,” “The One Where Monica and Richard are Just Friends,” “The One With Phoebe’s Ex-Partner,” “The One With the Hypnosis Tape,” and “The One With the Ultimate Fighting Champion.”

In /Film's review for the "Frasier" revival, Josh Spiegel described it as neither disappointing nor remarkable. Which is pretty much the perfect description for the supporting characters. After Jane Leeves, who played Daphne Moon on the original series, and David Hyde Pierce, who played Niles, passed on the opportunity to come back, showrunners Chris Harris and Joe Cristali had to go back to the drawing board. Along with star Kelsey Grammer, who remains the only original cast member to return in a recurring capacity, Harris and Cristali drew up a new plan for their revival show.
Now airing on Paramount+, that show has done its absolute best to chart a new course for Frasier Crane while remaining faithful to the original show. There are even callbacks to "Cheers" where the character of Frasier first debuted. But try as it might, the new series just can't seem to overcome the lack of the original supporting cast.

From “Cheers” to “Frasier,” Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane was a mainstay of comedy TV for 20 years, from the ’80s to the early-aughts. Now, after an equal amount of time off the air, Grammer is back in the role for Paramount+’s “Frasier.”
The streaming series is a revival-meets-reboot that once again spins off Grammer’s character with a new cast of colorful characters. Some original “Frasier” stars will return to guest star. However, David Hyde Pierce won’t return as Niles and John Mahoney, who played their father Martin, passed away in 2018.
That means Frasier – along with “Frasier” fans – will be surrounded by new faces. With that in mind, here’s a handy guide to the new “Frasier” cast and characters, including where you might have the actors before.

The entertainment world is still reeling from the sudden loss of Matthew Perry, the affable charmer who rose to fame as Chandler Bing on "Friends." The loss is greater considering that Perry was only 54 years old at the time of his passing, and how much closer fans felt towards him after his incredibly honest memoir, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing," came out just last year. Perry's autobiography received most of its press due to Perry revealing, in great detail, his severe problems with alcohol and substance abuse. The book helped make the man behind the curtain, so to speak, just as likable as the onscreen persona that he'll be most remembered for.
It's hard to imagine anyone else playing Chandler Bing at this point, and Perry wound up bringing a lot of his personal life to the part. As the show was ramping up for its first season,...

If you, like me, were someone who watched and loved "Friends" -- even with its many flaws -- you're probably doing a rewatch right now. The world lost Matthew Perry on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54, and it's pretty hard for fans to process. Perry, who played loveable goof Chandler Bing, struggled with addiction to alcohol and drugs during his time on the hit NBC series and afterward, according to his 2022 book, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir." Though it will be some time before we know the cause of death for my favorite Friend, viewers are recalling their favorite episodes and Chandler moments, and remembering the show for what it was.

Matthew Perry’s comedic genius was apparent from the very first episode of Friends.
That’s according to storied television director James Burrows, who helmed the pilot “The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate,” and would go on to direct 15 total episodes throughout the iconic NBC comedy’s 10-season run. Burrows spoke to the Today show on Thursday, one day after Friends creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane also opened up to the outlet about the immense loss of losing Perry at age 54.

I watched Friends when it originally aired. I was in college in the 1990s, when the sitcom launched and became a cultural phenomenon. I carved Thursday nights out of my calendar, reserving the 8 p.m. hour for my Friends obsession, refusing to go out until after my weekly visit with Ross, Rachel, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe. I was experiencing many of the same things my Friends were: first love, first job and learning who I was — a little Ocd (Monica), deflecting (Chandler) and a dash responsible dork (Ross).

Friends was and is a blessing to so many people around the world. And so was Matthew Perry.
The alchemy of brilliant writing, a stellar cast, voice-of-a-generation twentysomethings, and hilarity and emotionality in abundance, made it a wonderful series in 1994 — and unbeknown to all of us, were the ingredients to continue to impact generations almost 30 years after that. As the head of comedy development at Warner Bros. Television at that time, it’s definitely a shining star in my career.
Casting the six Friends, along with creators Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright, was challenging. They all had to be “stars.” The chemistry had to be believable. You just had to love them. And no one was more elusive than Chandler.
We had happily cast David Schwimmer (Ross), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Courteney Cox (Monica) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey), and we had two roles to go just days before we started production on the pilot.

Fans the world over are still reeling after the unexpected and tragic death of "Friends" star Matthew Perry. The 54-year-old actor had been on screens big and small for over 40 years, a prolific performer who grew up in the public eye. However, it was his performance as Chandler Bing throughout all 10 seasons of the pop culture-changing NBC sitcom "Friends" that made him a household name and television icon. /Film's own Jacob Hall called him the "snarky, sincere heart" of the series, pointing out that Perry had done the impossible. As he said:
"Perry had accomplished what the greatest of TV actors can do. He made me feel like I knew him. Across 236 episodes of television, Chandler Bing stopped being a character and started being a dude who lived in my house. I knew that guy. I loved him."

Matthew Perry’s five Friends cast mates have addressed — or at least, started to — the loss of their beloved co-star in the form of, appropriately, a joint statement.
Perry died on Saturday after his assistant found the actor unresponsive in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home. Initial speculation that he had drowned has not been confirmed, although TMZ reports that there were no drugs found at the scene and foul play is not suspected.
