‘Clipped’ Review: FX’s American Basketball Story Is a Salacious, Shrewd Account of NBA Racial Strife
Initially, “Clipped” seems content to recap the embarrassing and abhorrent factoids that make up Donald Sterling’s tenure as the owner of the L.A. Clippers. When legendary coach Doc Rivers (played by Laurence Fishburne) initially arrives in Los Angeles — eager to start laying the foundation for the organization’s first NBA title — the team forgets to pick him up from Lax. Ok, no problem, he’s happy to order his own Uber. But then Sterling tries to block Doc’s big free agent acquisition because J.J. Reddick, it turns out, is white. Similarly troubling and peculiar events pile up as the story bounces from the shrewd coach to Donald’s wife and co-owner of the Clippers, Shelly Sterling (Jacki Weaver), to a perplexing female employee who goes simply by V. (Cleopatra Coleman).
But like V. herself — and, really, like each of “Clipped’s” main characters outside of the purposefully oafish,...

Travis Kelce may have big plans beyond his football career, including starring in television shows and movies.
Recently, he commented on swirling rumors and fan theories that he’ll have a role in Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix.
The Adam Sandler sequel film was confirmed last month, with much excitement surrounding the project, including potential guest stars in the cast.
While the Kansas City Chiefs star was already successful on the football field with his statistical achievements and Super Bowl rings, he became more of a celebrity due to dating a particular singer.
Travis’s romance with Taylor Swift became highly publicized, not only because of headlines but also because she attended multiple games throughout the season, including the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Travis recently discussed the possibility of his appearance in the movie during his and his brother Jason’s New Heights podcast.

Shortly after Netflix released the trailer for its new adult animated series Good Times two weeks ago, our office started receiving calls and emails.
Inspired by the iconic live-action sitcom of the 1970s, the new show’s use of the beloved title conjures notions of familial fabric and community cohesion, amid challenges of generational poverty and stifling social policies that perpetuate inequitable caste conditions. Fans of the original series likely expected to see descendants of the Evans family engaging with their circumstances in adherence to the ancestral creed: Love through the pain.
But to the considerable consternation of many viewers, the new Good Times trailer seems to establish a world of Black characters navigating chaos and dysfunction, largely driven by drugs, violence and discord. While sibling tension is a common dynamic within TV family portrayals, the trailer resolves such banter by offering a father’s regret for failing to employ prophylactic measures to avoid parenthood.

Not many would consider it hard labor to stand in the shadow of Jennifer Lopez. Few, perhaps, could stand as still and as long as documentary filmmaker Jason Bergh.
For nearly a decade, Bergh has recorded the multi-hyphenate star behind the scenes as she has charted new paths as a content producer and beauty mogul, and danced her way onto America’s biggest stage — the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Last month, Bergh took his loftiest seat at J. Lo, Inc. by serving as director for “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” a much-discussed documentary about the making of Lopez’s 2024 visual album “This Is Me … Now.”
Imposingly tall and excessively kind, Bergh has been a gentle giant in the unscripted space for years. He’s directed episodic and short content on notable music figures like Alicia Keys and athletes Stephen Curry and Clay Matthews. After the dust settled on “Greatest Love Story,...

Stars of the original Good Times are weighing in after the trailer for Netflix’s forthcoming animated reboot led some fans to question whether the new project will indeed be “dynomite.”
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year after premiering in February 1974, Good Times focused on the Chicago-based Evans family, with the Norman Lear-produced series running for six seasons and earning praise for its realistic portrayal of a working-class Black family. After the first promo debuted last week for Netflix’s animated exploration of the Evans family’s current generation, plenty of social media users expressed surprise that the new series — which appears to double down on stereotypes with such elements as a drug-dealing infant — didn’t highlight the positive themes from the initial show.

Crypto entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison for a massive fraud that unraveled with the collapse of Ftx, once one of the world’s most popular platforms for exchanging digital currency.
Bankman-Fried, 32, was convicted in November of fraud and conspiracy — a dramatic fall from a crest of success that included a Super Bowl advertisement and celebrity endorsements from stars like quarterback Tom Brady, basketball star Stephen Curry and comedian Larry David.
U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan imposed the sentence in the same Manhattan courtroom where, four months ago, Bankman-Fried testified that his intention had been to revolutionize the emerging cryptocurrency market with his innovative and altruistic ideas, not to steal.
Kaplan said the sentence reflected “that there is a risk that this man will be in position to do something very bad in the future. And it’s not a trivial risk at all.

Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of crypto exchange Ftx, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for defrauding investors.
Judge Lewis Kaplan of the Southern District of New York set the sentence today in a hearing in New York Federal Court. He said the long sentence would serve as a deterrent, that Bankman-Fried had lied on the stand during his trial, and that he felt there was a risk of him repeating similar crimes.
Speaking before the sentence, Bankman-Fried said what happened to Ftx customers has “been excruciating to watch.” But, he said, “I don’t think the reasons for that have been properly told.” The 31-year-old said he had made a series of bad decisions and thrown his life away.

When Ranada Shepard first got the call to serve as showrunner and executive producer of an animated reboot of Good Times, it didn’t take her long to decide she was interested. Before Robert Pattinson’s The Batman introduced Colin Farrell as the Penguin, DC fans got a much more terrifying take on the character by Danny DeVito. He is the exact reason why Pattinson finds Tim Burton’s 1992 film, Batman Returns, as one of the most disturbing things even now. Michael Keaton’s second Batman film was also one to take a dark turn as a DC superhero movie.
Robert Pattinson in and as The Batman
Pattinson followed in the footsteps of George Clooney, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck to play the latest iteration of Batman. James Gunn’s Dcu is set to introduce another Batman, a casting that has yet to be announced.

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry said his next career may be in politics.
Curry appeared on CBS Mornings to promote his second children’s book, I Am Extraordinary, which aims to inspire kids to embrace their uniqueness. CBS News’ Jericka Duncan asked the basketball player if he would ever consider running for president following his time in the athletic world.
“Maybe, I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in the way I can,” Curry said. “So if that’s the way to do it, then — I’m not going to say the presidency but if politics is a way that you can create meaningful change or if there’s another way outside of politics.”
A stint in politics would not be too surprising for Curry. He and his wife, Ayesha Curry, are extremely involved in the Oakland community, even after the Warriors moved to San Francisco.

For more than three decades, the world has seen several iterations of Batman on the big screen, starting off with Michael Keaton’s classic depiction of the superhero in 1989’s Batman.
From there, several stars made this character a legend in the film industry, and Ben Affleck is now the last actor to play the role in the main cinematic universe before the newly developing Dcu chooses a brand new face for The Dark Knight in the future.

When it comes to choosing which is the greatest among the long list of stars who portrayed this character on screen, the discussions can turn into heated debates as stars like Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson will most likely take the top spot.

From his origins in Hampton, Va, to his ascent as one of the most tenacious and exhilarating basketball players of all time, Iverson fearlessly embraced his individuality both on and off the court.
His personality and fierce competitive spirit endeared him to fans, teammates, and opposing players alike. Now, through unprecedented access and personal stories, along with interviews with family, friends, and fellow NBA players and coaches, Iverson shares a more reflective side of his present-day self, as he realizes his cultural impact long after his...

Lindsay Lohan made a splash in the industry with the 1998 Nancy Meyers film Parent Trap. She became a teen icon in the 2000s following the success of both Mean Girls and Freaky Friday. Saturday Night Live set its sights on The Floor, Fox’s new game show hosted by Rob Lowe that has contestants facing off in a series of quiz duels.
On SNL’s version, tonight’s host Shane Gillis played the defending champion David, who triumphed in the first round by correctly identifying a glass of orange juice.
But when it came time to identify famous faces, Gillis was continually stumped by a series of pictures featuring Black politicians and personalities. As pictures of Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Maya Angelou, Colin Powell and Aretha Franklin flashed on the screen, a panicked Gillis said things like “I know him, but I’m nervous” or “I’m a huge fan of hers” without saying their actual names.
Fear even had him miss the names of Stephen Curry and Oprah Winfrey.
But when an image of Cleveland from Family Guy appears, Gillis’ David gets it right.

TNT sports commentator Kenny Smith is standing by comments he made about WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu during the NBA’s All-Star weekend.
While appearing on The Stephen A. Smith Show on Monday, the NBA analyst maintained that he wasn’t intending to criticize the athlete. “I think it’s much ado about nothing, Stephen, honestly,” said Smith. “Most people who know basketball understood what I was talking about. Actually, I was advocating for her, more than anything else, because basketball is muscle memory. So he practices from one range, she practices from another.”
He continued, “There’s even a study, I think, with somebody throwing darts. And if you move him out even one step, his accuracy changes dramatically. But the funny thing about it is if you move them in one step, the accuracy changes, because you’re taking so many shots from the exact same range. So I’m like,...

The action that occurs during NBA All-Star weekend includes the All-Star Celebrity Game, the Skills Challenge, the Slam Dunk contest, and the 3-Point Contest. In 2024, a new idea to incorporate came about: Stephen vs. Sabrina 3-Point Challenge.
That challenge will see Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry and the WNBA’s New York Liberty superstar Sabrina Ionescu faceoff in their own 3-point competition after the NBA 3-Point Contest and before the Slam Dunk Contest.
Even the casual NBA fan knows a bit about Curry and his family, but what about Ionescu’s life off the court? Here’s more on her contest with Curry and why you might recognize her fiancé Hroniss Grasu.

The NBA All-Star Weekend festivities February 16-18 are going old-school. The celebration takes place in Indianapolis for the first time since 1985 and the All-Star Game returns to the classic East vs. West format with four 12-minute quarters and standard scoring. The celebration begins Friday with the Ruffles Celebrity Game at Lucas Oil Stadium and the top young players in the Panini Rising Stars game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. State Farm All-Star Saturday Night at Lucas Oil Stadium has the Kia Skills Challenge, the Starry 3-Point Contest and the fan-favorite AT&T Slam Dunk. This year also features Stephen Curry vs. WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu in a head-to-head 3-Point Challenge. On Sunday, the 73rd NBA All-Star Game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse showcases the league’s best in a display of scoring prowess against a remarkably lax defense. Last year, Team Giannis defeated Team LeBron by an insane score of 184-175. Eastern Conference All-Star ...

There comes a moment in many sports documentaries when viewers find themselves wondering whether they’ve drunk the Gatorade. All the fast cuts and swelling music, the bodily injuries and emotional agony, the triumphant moments and podium tears have a way of pushing our buttons.
In director Sarah Dowland’s “Sue Bird: In the Clutch,” that objectivity-questioning pause comes when the WNBA legend’s agent appears for an on-camera interview (she happens to be one of its executive producers as well). No arguing that agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas knows a great deal about Bird and even more about the changes in marketing strategies that women athletes have faced over the years. She also knows that optics matter, and it’s hard not to be a little frustrated that such an obviously biased cheerleader should appear as a source. (Another red flag: NBA Entertainment had a role in producing the doc.

The subject of endless sports talk over the past few weeks, Golden State Warriors locker room leader Draymond Green spoke out today about his recent 12-game suspension for taking a swing at Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic during a game on Dec. 13.
Green has been suspended four times since March. His most recent involuntary time away came just six games after he served a five-game suspension without pay for “escalating an on-court altercation” putting Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert in a headlock. Needless to say, the sports talk machine has been in overdrive parsing the incidents and the details of the four-time NBA champion’s most recent transgression.

Warner Bros. Discovery will continue to make Max’s Bleacher Report live sports tier free to subscribers for several more months, citing “tech integrations” for a months-long delay before it starts charging for the programming add-on.
Launched last October, Wbd initially offered the Bleacher Report (B/R) Sports Add-On to Max subscribers for a promotional period. The plan was to charge Max customers $9.99 per month extra starting March 1 for the sports package — in time for the NCAA’s March Madness men’s basketball tournament — but now the company is pushing that back by several months to finish working on technical integrations. The company does not have an expected date for when it will begin charging for the B/R Sports Add-On on Max.

When Stephen Curry decided to turn pro after a stellar college basketball career at tiny Davidson College in North Carolina, NBA scouts looked him over. They weren’t impressed.
“Far below NBA standard in regard to explosiveness and athleticism,” they scoffed. “Do not rely on him to run your team.”
Curry proved them all wrong, as shown thrillingly in the Apple Original Films documentary Stephen Curry: Underrated, directed by Peter Nicks and produced by an all-star roster including Nicks and Ryan Coogler.
“We discovered that scouting report, which basically did not see his potential,” Nicks explained during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Documentary event. “And we also discovered sort of his inner mentality, which is very much a belief that he was, is, and always will be underrated despite everything that he’s achieved. We knew A24 had a decision to make on its streaming ambitions. The indie distributor’s output deal with Showtime, struck in 2019, expired in November, leaving A24’s movies without a dedicated digital home. Free agency can be quite lucrative.
Weeks later, A24 signed with Showtime’s biggest rival, HBO, and its sister streaming service Max. Upgrade.
A December 6 announcement unveiled a multiyear, pay-1 output deal for new A24 theatrical movies to run exclusively on HBO and Cinemax, and stream only on Max. The deal also extended A24’s 2022 licensing agreement with Max for older films, which covered more than two dozen movies.
Some of the newer A24 fare heading to the Warner Bros. Discovery platforms in the pay-1 window include 2023 theatrical releases “Past Lives,” “Dicks: The Musical,” “Priscilla,” “Dream Scenario,” “The Zone of Interest,” “The Iron Claw,” and the restored re-release of Talking Heads concert film “Stop Making Sense.
