10 Iconic Dance Numbers in the Millennium ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Hindi Film Music has witnessed paradigm changes in the Millennium. Songs are now promo tools and barely situational, and lip-sync numbers predominantly dance songs. On International Dance Day (April 29), I choose the 10 truly magnificent dance numbers that will always live on. And yes, I have not included Naacho Naacho from Rrr as it was technically not a Hindi movie!
Budtameez Dil / Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Ranbir Kapoor outdid himself in this song, reviving memories of his father, Rishi Kapoor’s mastery of dance! The musical was enriched immeasurably by this by Benny Dayal-Shefali Alvares song, composed by Pritam with delightfully crazy lyrics (Paan mein pudina dekha) by Amitabh Bhattacharya. And if you thought the dance had a hint of Michael Jackson, please remember that legend was its choreographer Remo D’Souza’s idol.

[Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for “Polite Society.”]
It took everything I had not to yell out loud during “Polite Society.”
Not because of the intense fight sequences, killer martial arts, or even that twist — what had this reporter out of her seat was a dance sequence that unfolds during the film’s final act. As Ria (Priya Kansara) dances at sister Lena’s (Ritu Arya) wedding, she aims to “distract” the assembled guests while her friends are busy executing a master plan that’s consumed most of the film’s running time. Dressed in an emerald-green outfit, Ria takes the stage, and the opening notes of “Maar Dala” begin to play.
Composed by Ismail Darbar with lyrics by Nusrat Badr, “Maar Dala” first appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2002 film “Devdas,” based on 1917 Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel of the same name. In the film, Madhuri Dixit-Nene performs the number (sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy and K.K.) as courtesan Chandramukhi,...

Bollywood's well known music composer Ismail Darbar, who had composed music for films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas and others, was arrested today by the Mumbai police. The said arrest took place in context to Darbar's alleged involvement in the assault (which took place yesterday) of a 29 year old Prashant Chaudhary, who worked as an assistant director in an upcoming movie that's being directed by Ismail Darbar. The police said that Ismail Darbar, Zaid (Darbar's son) and two of their acquaintances (Nishant Singh and Mohsin Khan) went to Prashant Chaudhary's house on New Link Road and assaulted him. The reason for the assault was Prashant Chaudhary demanding his delayed payments from Darbar. Chaudhary, in his complaint to the police, said that the aforementioned four men assaulted him with hockey sticks in his house. The cops have even obtained the CCTV footage of the society. It is where hearts meet, auntyjis gossip and kids have a blast. Navratri shin-digs are the ‘it’ get togethers in the Desi calendar every year. It’s a nine day long festive period where everyone joins in daily for a night of song and dance. Apart from being the social get together of the year the festival has a strong religious meaning. It celebrates nine forms of Goddess Durga, one on each night, hence the name nav-nine ratri-nights. The 10th day is the festival of Dashera, marking the ultimate triumph of good over evil in Indian history.
Unlike any other usual festival, navratri songs and dance are specific. They have a distinct beat and the dance form adopted is garba or dandiya. The song and dance routine of the night, garba or dandiya, also have a strong historical backing as depicts the rasa-lila between Lord Krishna and the gopis of Vrindavan.

Once upon a time there lived a showman. He delivered films on larger than life canvases with heroic characters, melodramatic situations, grandiose dialogues and soul stirring music. We fondly recall the man who gave us iconic films like Karz, Ram-Lakhan, Saudagar, Pardes and many more! Sadly the showman never quite understood the evolution that happened to Indian cinema. He struggled to appeal to the changing tastes, the new generation’s demands and new age storytelling that Indian cinema had adopted. Today he continues to force the audiences to re-visit the style of cinema that once landed him with blockbusters however time and time again he gets rejected. Last Friday he tried again. And sadly last Friday, he failed again.

The release date of director Subhash Ghai’s Kaanchi has been shifted to early 2014. The director, who is busy shooting some last scenes of Kaanchi, is in no hurry to rush the film’s release date – a “mistake” he made with his last film Yuvvraaj. “A few portions of the film are left for shoot. I am going to take my own time to release Kaanchi. I am not in a hurry to release the film as I don’t want to repeat the mistake I did with my last film,” Ghai said. ”Most of the films which do not do well because of the pressure of its release date. Directors later feel that the film would have worked better if they had given some more time for their film,” he added.

Subhash Ghai has been extremely successful with new faces and blockbuster songs. Whenever he has experimented with new faces and had excellent music to go with the film, the films have been box office super hits.
Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadhri were launched in the film Hero. The film had many hits such as the catchy ‘Ding dong’, ‘Tu mera janoo’, ‘Pyaar karne waale’ and ‘Lambi judaai’. The film went on to become a big blockbuster.
Then came Saudagar, where Ghai introduced Vivek Mushran and Mainsha Koirala. Here too, the music was top notch. The ‘Imli ka boota’ number in Saudagar added an element of affection to the war-like chemistry and ‘Ilu Ilu’ was the new anthem of love for the star-crossed lovers across the nation.
