Since 2015, there’s been no need to go on a minibreak to a cultural European destination. Richard Ayoade and Joe Lycett have gone for us. They’ve waited at airport security lines displaying their miniature toothpaste tube in a clear plastic bag. They’ve bought mystery crisps from railway vending machines. They’ve been to the museums, tried the local delicacies and gone on the sightseeing tours, so that we could stay luxuriously put.

David Mitchell leads new BBC crime drama Ludwig, and the first details of the show have landed.
David Mitchell has become a familiar face in UK comedy, whether trying to discern who’s telling the truth in Would I Lie To You? or as the uptight Mark Corrigan alongside long time comedy partner Robert Webb in Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain’s Peep Show.
He also took on the role of William Shakespeare in Ben Elton’s sitcom Upstart Crow, and reprised the role for a stage adaptation that opened in 2020 and then again when the play was restaged in 2022
Just as Alan Davies took a left turn from stand-up comedy to drama in David Renwick’s superb Jonathan Creek, Mitchell is now moving into the realm of crime drama to play the title role in six part BBC series Ludwig.
The synopsis reads as follows:
When John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor’s (David Mitchell) identical twin,...

“The O.C.” alum Mischa Barton guest starring on a reboot of long-running Australian soap opera “Neighbours” was probably not on anybody’s 2023 bingo card. The show was cancelled last spring, but — in a twist that could rival the soap’s melodramatic storylines — it was brought back from the dead by Amazon Freevee eight months later.
The reboot has given the show a new lease of life, and as well as welcoming back many of the old cast members it has also embraced some new ones – including Barton.
Ahead of the “Neighbours’” launch on Sept. 18, Barton sat down with Variety to discuss how she wound up joining the show, her next project and whether a reboot of “The O.C.” could also ever be in the cards.
How did you end up as a guest star on “Neighbours”?
Over the years they’ve asked me a couple of times and tried to get me for different roles.

Imagine being someone who’s never seen Taskmaster. A virgin to joy. Someone whose eyes have never before drunk in the sight of a banana-Noel Fielding hiding in a fruit bowl, of Joe Wilkinson presenting the mayor of Chesham with 42 Calippo ice lollies, or of Charlotte Ritchie stumbling around a golf course blindfolded like an adorable Minion. What promise awaits! The prize tasks, the flashes of creative genius, the glorious failures… Alex Horne’s challenge-based comedy panel show is one of the most reliably entertaining TV programmes ever made.

Never before in the field of entertainment was so much owed by so many to so few. The comedians who appear on Taskmaster are brave souls willing to expose the inner workings of their minds for the sake of dumb fun (and a boost in tour and book sales).
Taskmaster is a great leveller that celebrates both genius and failure. There’s nowhere to hide. You can start off in week one as a famed intellectual, by week eight you’re the man who couldn’t successfully hide an aubergine. Exude cool as a stand-up on stage in your professional career? Try to maintain that composure while competitively throwing wet teabags into a mug and let’s see who’s the cool guy now.

Finding out that the Qi elves got something wrong is as oddly satisfying as watching a waiter drop a tray of glasses. It doesn’t happen that often, but when it does, it’s a sight to behold.
Series T of Qi is currently airing, with Sandi Toksvig once again steering the ship of Quite Interesting facts and Alan Davies still on board as regular panellist.
Before we add too many of their fun facts to our bank of things to impress with at parties (or more likely make us look like insufferable know-it-alls), let’s remind ourselves of the times Qi got it wrong.
Flobbadob
Who knew harmless 1950s puppets Bill and Ben would end up the source of Qi controversy? In series B, Stephen Fry claimed the language these flowerpot men puppets spoke was called ‘Flobbadob’, named after the sound of the farts made by the creator’s brothers in their childhood baths.

Ding ding, everybody off the Taskmaster bus! New passengers incoming! Series 12 – which taught us that Victoria Coren-Mitchell never learned how to ride a bike, Guz Khan owns more framed portraits of himself than is sensible, Desiree Burch can’t burst a balloon with a fork to save her life, Morgana Robinson is able to get goose bumps at will and Alan Davies still has a Jonathan Creek wig in his loft – has reached its climax. One lucky winner has skipped away merrily with the Taskmaster’s gleaming head as a prize and plenty of time to prepare for the inevitable Series 11-15 Champion of Champions special. Meanwhile the other four have skipped away safe in the knowledge that nobody is ever again likely to ask them to sit on a cake.

They’re not backing down. That is the pledge and also the prestige (to borrow a phrase from another film) behind the second trailer to Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, Tenet. Still a vague and enigmatic tease of high-concept ideas and teasingly time-bending physics, the second trailer almost confirms defiantly that the first Nolan film in three years will be going to theaters. Albeit without an exact date or even month in the fine print.
In his first film since 2017’s Dunkirk, the acclaimed director appears to be challenging (or at least re-contextualizing) our basic understanding of physics in much the same way that Interstellar did, albeit with a film that looks as sleekly exciting as his biggest popcorn triumphs to date, The Dark Knight and Inception.
For Tenet, Nolan reteams with a big chunk of his Dunkirk crew, including cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, production designer Nathan Crowley, costume designer Jeffrey Kurland,...

There’s a sweet message at the heart of “The Bromley Boys” about finding the heroism in mediocrity, thought it’s one not best served by the film being entirely mediocre itself. Adapted from a sepia-tinted memoir by British author Dave Roberts — detailing the childhood origins of his obsession with the consistently second-rate Bromley soccer team — Steve Kelly’s lightweight film spins allegedly true events into the stuff of pure sitcom: affable enough, but so glibly inauthentic as to make “Bend It Like Beckham” look like cinéma vérité by comparison. It’s curious how the world’s most popular sport maintains such a thin roster of truly classic movies in its honor; that is unchanged here.
Perhaps ongoing “Game of Thrones” mania is to credit for a belated, somewhat surprising U.S. release for “The Bromley Boys,” a year after it failed to score on home turf: It’s led...

A new Christopher Nolan movie awaits us next year. Here's everything we know about Tenet...
It's been nearly three years since the Christopher Nolan's last film, 2017's Dunkirk. But the acclaimed director has been hard at work on a mysterious new thriller called Tenet, which looks to be one of the most challenging blockbusters of the 2020 summer season.
For Tenet, Nolan is re-teaming with a big chunk of his Dunkirk crew, including DoP Hoyte van Hoytema, production designer Nathan Crowley, costume designer Jeffrey Kurland, and visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson. Nolan has picked Black Panther and Creed composer Ludwig Göransson to create a score this time, and has also ditched long-time favorite Lee Smith for Hereditary editor Jennifer Lame.

When it came to the new dark comedy series “Flack,” Anna Paquin said that as a producer, she was attracted to the quality of creator Oliver Lansley’s writing — but it was the character that ensured her involvement both behind and in front of the camera. “It just happened to be a character that I’m like ‘yeah, I’m not giving that to someone else,'” she said. “If I was not right for that character it would still be something I would want to produce. It’s just — a 30-something hot mess/rockstar professional, with all the dark, all the drama, all the funny, all the beautiful writing? Yeah, no, I want that, please and thank you.”

NBC has put in development Whites, a comedy based on the UK format, from Matt Tarses (Scrubs), Will Arnett and Sony Pictures TV, where Tarses and Arnett’s Electric Avenue banner are under deals.
Written by Tarses, Whites’ U.S. adaptation is set in the fast-paced and hilarious kitchen at a beautiful restaurant in upstate New York. Roland White, a disgraced wunderkind of the New York culinary scene, has spent the past three years here in exile, and things are complicated when the owner hires Emily, a new pastry chef who is as gluten-free, farm-to-table and gender-neutral-pronoun-using as anyone on the planet.
Tarses executive produces with Arnett, his producing partner Marc Forman, Peter Principato of Artists First and the original series’ creators Oliver Lansley and Matt King.

How Older Women, an Oft-Forgotten Demo, Are Leading the Charge on Boutique Streaming Service Britbox
You think streaming television, you think hip millennials giving the middle finger to cable services. You think British television, you think retirement-aged women, sipping tea while watching period dramas while wearing a lot of very interesting hats.
And yet, several streaming services find themselves battling it out by combining the two concepts. BritBox, owned by British networks BBC Worldwide and ITV, launched last year in a busy field that also includes companies like Acorn, Walter Presents and others focused on international titles.
Entering an already-crowded streaming landscape, those digital services have opted to go after narrower enthusiast audiences rather than try to compete with the monolith that is Netflix. Niche comes with its own challenges, however, as evidenced by attempts like Seeso (a NBC Universal service aimed at young comedy fans), which shut down after failing to attract a large enough subscriber base.

We celebrate the work of M.R. James, whose eerie ghost stories were made into a festive tradition by the BBC...
A shadow lurking just beyond the edge of the vision. Dusty manuscripts bearing fragments of ancient testimony, conflicting and confounding. It’s not a very scintillating title, Passengers, is it? Especially for a film about a kilometre-long ship hurtling through space with the two romantic leads trapped inside it. Love’s Labour's Lost In Space might have suited it better, had Futurama not beaten screenwriter Jon Spaihts to the punch by about 17 years. When life hurts, well-crafted, traditional sitcom like Count Arthur Strong can be an indispensable salve…
There’s a period a little while after a family death, after the days spent in a traffic jam of errands, decisions and phone calls, when you have to merge back into the regular lane. Normal life demands to re-start. The fridge needs filling and the lawn needs mowing, even if, impossibly, the person who usually does both has vanished forever.
For my family like most others, normal life means watching television. Telly is the cradle that rocked us through the decades. Whatever happened to us happened against a backdrop of soaps and sitcoms.
Losing our dad though, changed things. In the flayed-skin sensitivity of the days around his funeral, flicking through the channels meant running a gauntlet. A murder on EastEnders brought unwelcome ambulances and coroners back into our living room.
