Studied literature, philosophy and cinema during the 1930's. Began to work as a film critic during the early war years. Assisted Luchino Visconti on 'Ossessione' in 1942. After five years as assistant director and screenwriter, made his name as director of films like 'Caccia Tragica' (Tragic Pursuit) and 'Riso Amaro' (Bitter Rice) which examined the socio/economic plight of ordinary people in post-war Italy.
