The WGA strike of 2023 has created a fortunate side effect. While writers demanded better pay from studios -- as well as a guarantee that they would not be replaced by clunky automated writing machines -- many films and TV shows halted production. Without writers, the Hollywood system ground slowly to a halt. When the strike was resolved, production began again, but it left a 148-day gap in most studios' production schedules. To fill the gaps, some studios have adopted an ingenious approach: merely re-release some of their biggest hits from years past, allowing audiences to see some of their favorite movies on the big screen again.

One of the most iconic science fiction action franchises is "Predator," which began with the eponymous movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. While "Predator" is regarded as an action classic, attempts to follow-up on its success have since had considerably more mixed results. The series has seen a number of sequels, revivals, and crossovers with the "Alien" franchise, with varying levels of critical and commercial reception. However, for every "Predator" movie that has seen the light of day, there are plenty of projects that were canceled or altered significantly.
From failed attempts to bring Schwarzenegger back in the fold to star in additional installments or sequel plans shelved by disappointing box office, there are lots of discarded "Predator" movies. This includes the studio shuffling pitches and filmmakers in their hopes to keep the franchise relevant and recapture the 1987 movie's magic. Here's a roster of "Predator" movies that were once in development but ultimately never made,...

Frank Grillo, who played a tough villain in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is asking Marvel’s co-president, Louis D’Esposito, for a favor. Exclusive: While high-profile packages have been flourishing following the ends of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the spec market also looks to have some pop to it as sources tell Deadline that Netflix has landed the female-driven genre thriller Apex from scribe Jeremy Robbins. Ian Bryce and Chernin Entertainment will produce. Netflix declined comment.
The script is described as Free Solo meets Silence of the Lambs and follows a rock climber who finds herself being hunted in the wild.
The sale comes at an interesting time in a post-strike landscape where studios see a need for new original stories to fill their development slates, and the spec and packaging markets have reaped the rewards. Prior to the WGA strike in May, the market was not as robust as reps cautioned their clients about how hard it is to sell a script with talent attached, let alone a spec on its own.

This post contains spoilers for "The Purge" franchise.
2013's "The Purge" introduced an intriguing premise: in a near-future dystopia, all crime is legal for 12 hours once a year, allowing people to indulge in their most violent instincts. Written and directed by James DeMonaco, "The Purge" takes the home-invasion route, where a wealthy family unit finds themselves cornered by a bloodthirsty group of murderers itching to commit crimes without any consequences. The overwhelming success enjoyed by the film contributed to the making of an expanding franchise, with later entries retaining this core concept while introducing new socio-political facets to enliven their narratives.
While it is perfectly acceptable to watch the "Purge" franchise by the order of release date, following this format introduces some chronological issues, as later entries serve as prequels or expand the universe with some ties to the film franchise. Although we will be focusing exclusively on the movies,...

All of the best horror films are traditionally more than just "a horror film." George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" is a zombie movie, yes, but it's also a satire of consumerism and an exploration of how close the crumbling of societal norms is at any given moment. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a masterpiece of practical effects, but it is also a sci-fi body horror film examining themes of paranoia, identity, isolation, fear of the unknown, and masculine hierarchies in survival situations. Despite what naysayers may cry out these days, horror has always been political, but one franchise has consistently been a lot more "in your face" about it.
I'm talking of course, about "The Purge" movies. Created by James DeMonaco and introduced by Blumhouse in 2013 with "The Purge," the films take place in an almost "Twilight Zone" alternate reality of America, where the country enjoys...

Two Saturday Night Live legends, Pete Davidson and Eddie Murphy, are joining forces for The Pickup, an upcoming comedy directed by Tim Story. The project hails from Amazon MGM Studios, with plot details remaining a mystery. Smoke on the street says The Pickup is a heist comedy with a script by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows.
In addition to his directorial duties, Story produces through his The Story Company banner, with Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox, and Murphy and Charisse Hewitt-Webster via Eddie Murphy Productions. The Story Company’s Vicky Mara Story, Davis Entertainment’s Jeremy Stein, and Kevin Burrows, Ross Fanger, and Matt Mider executive produce.
When he’s not the subject of paparazzi fodder or changing dating partners like fresh pairs of underwear, Davidson appears in films like Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Fast X, Dumb Money, and Good Burger 2. He recently completed his role for The Home.

"The Purge" and its four sequels represent perhaps the greatest Trojan horse in modern horror cinema.
It starts with that indelible high concept premise: a near-future America run by a totalitarian regime that has seemingly eliminated crime by allowing crimes to be legal for one night a year. Purge Night. A chance for interested folks to work out ... everything they need to work out. But the thinly veiled subtext of the first film — that the Purge exists to allow the wealthy, powerful, and often complacent to systemically wipe out the poor, the disenfranchised, and the non-white — becomes the literal text going forward. Casual horror fans lulled in by a thrilling elevator pitch found themselves watching the angriest, most progressive, and yes, most blatantly political movie franchise of the past decade-plus. Come for the scary masks, stay for the ... civics lesson? Naturally, some fans still insist these movies are just big...

“The Home” has found a home at Lionsgate, TheWrap has learned. The Santa Monica-based studio snapped up domestic distribution rights to the Miramax horror thriller. Pete Davidson headlines while James DeMonaco helmed the feature. The picture is about a former foster child who begins working in a retirement home. Spoiler: The elderly residents and their caretakers have some very diabolical secrets.
The former “Saturday Night Live” castmember previously co-starred in the A24 horror comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies.” However, this will presumably be a more straightforward (or straight-faced) shocker. DeMonaco previously wrote and directed the first three “The Purge” films and has remained relatively hands-on with the franchise.
“We went into ‘The Home’ not knowing what to expect and James and Pete delivered an exhilarating ride of a movie that is pure suspense-filled fun and just plain bonkers,” stated Charlotte Koh. Lionsgate’s EVP of acquisitions and co-productions boasted that “Audiences...

The deal closed after the exit last week of Miramax CEO Bill Block, who made the film and placed it at TIFF. On the Lionsgate side was Charlotte Koh, EVP Acquisitions and Co-Productions, along with the film’s producers, Block and Sebastian K. Lemercier. While we continue to wait to hear if The Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco is going to have the opportunity to make The Purge 6 (last we heard, he was sounding confident that the sequel is going to happen), DeMonaco has been hard at work on another horror project, The Home. When Is The Purge 6 Coming? Well, The Purge, a chilling and popular dystopian horror anthology franchise, is making a return with 6th installment.
Titled “The Purge 6,” the upcoming horror-action movie is currently in development, and while the release date is yet to be disclosed, fans are eagerly anticipating its arrival.
The film’s screenplay and direction are in the capable hands of James DeMonaco, who has been the driving force behind the entire franchise, having written all five previous movies and directed the first three.
The franchise’s journey began in 2013 with the release of the first Purge movie, which faced negative reviews initially but surprised everyone by claiming the top spot and grossing nearly $90 million on a modest budget of $3 million.
Following its success, three more Purge movies, both sequels and prequels, continued the franchise’s success with impressive profit margins.

How far does the dial have to move to take a holiday from festive to fucked up? At least since the events of “Jaws” hit Amity Island, Fourth of July celebrations have served as frightful fodder for satirists, who have used the summer holiday as an opportunity to lambast the all-too-obvious dark side to our country’s blood-spattered stars and stripes.
The best Fourth of July horror movies make use of both their seasonal setting and thorny subject matter. There’s something innately disturbing about taking a day that should be celebratory and re-packaging it in that twisted carnival aesthetic — dripping with oversaturated reds, whites, and blues. And exploring the birth of a country currently tearing itself in two (just look at the Supreme Court last week) bestows an embarrassment of thematic riches onto the writers and directors willing to stew in its spirit.

The Forever Purge had been marketed as the franchise’s *final* movie, but creator James DeMonaco eventually walked back those statements with the suggestion that he may actually have one more Purge story in the tank. The plan, last we heard? To bring Frank Grillo back as Leo Barnes, his character from The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year.
“I think I’m going to write the next one, and if the audience wants it, we’ll do it,” DeMonaco told Daily Dead back in 2021. “Again, I think I came up with a new way to flip the whole thing upside down, and it’ll be five years after [The Forever Purge], but it takes America in a whole new direction and I think it would be a very interesting place to explore.”
DeMonaco explains to Variety in a new update this week that he finished the script “about eight months ago.

The Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco is hoping to make The Purge 6 – and he’s sounding confident that the sequel is going to happen. But before that project goes into production, DeMonaco is wrapping up work on a different horror project, The Home. First discussed in 2021, that film stars Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live) – and during an interview with Variety, DeMonaco said that the actor, best known for his comedic performances, is not funny in their horror thriller collaboration.
DeMonaco said, “He’s not funny in it, to be quite honest. This is a very, very dramatic, straightforward role. He’s the straight man while chaos is happening all around him and he’s reacting to it. But he just came in knowing what he had to do and he stepped up completely.“

'The Purge 6' script has already been written.Franchise creator James DeMonaco has finished the script for the upcoming sixth instalment in the horror franchise - which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year - as Frank Grillo returns as Leo Barnes, while the movie will see how life continues after the collapse of the United States.Revealing he wrote the script eight months ago, DeMonaco told Variety: "It’s not completely different than previous movies, but it’s a new America that we’re entering into.“In ‘The Forever Purge,’ America kind of collapsed, and it’s really kind of mapped itself according to different ideologies. The states are based on sexuality, religion and ideology."So we’ve broken apart and the state of discord is at its worst. We enter 'The Purge' in that world.”The franchise has sparked five movies and a two-season TV series thus far,...

Almost two years have gone by since Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco let it be known that he had an idea for The Purge 6 that would get him back into the director’s chair (after handing The First Purge and The Forever Purge over to other directors) and see Frank Grillo reprising the role of Leo Barnes, the character he played in The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year. But as time goes by, it was seeming less likely that this sixth Purge movie was going to happen. Earlier this year, Grillo indicated the shot-callers at Universal and Blumhouse weren’t sure they were going to move forward with this one. But in a new interview with Variety, DeMonaco seems confident that The Purge 6 is going to happen.
Today, June 7th, actually marks the tenth anniversary of the release of The Purge, which is why Variety got in contact with DeMonaco.

Over five low-budget box office hits and a two-season TV series, “The Purge” saga — which portrays a not-too-distant-future America where all crimes, including murder, are legal for one night a year in order to satiate a bloodthirsty public — swelled into a $450 million franchise. But the first chapter was almost never made.
While the film became the defining hit of writer and director James DeMonaco’s career, he says the script was passed over “40-50 times” for being seen as “too anti-American.”
“I had this little, strange, dark indictment of American gun culture,” he said. “I hate guns. To me, the scariest thing in the world would be a night where everyone was armed and it was legal to use these firearms. To me, there was nothing scarier than that notion.”
Ultimately, the film got the attention of super-producer Jason Blum, who “saw something bigger in the conceit,” said DeMonaco. Soon,...

The Purge franchise started out as a uniquely conceptual suspense-filled horror thriller that was a scaled down, home invasion flick. Then, the sequels started exploring more and more of the concepts that surrounded a dark holiday in which people can act out their darkest desires without legal repercussions. The star of the sequels, and action movie journeyman, Frank Grillo, was kind enough to speak to JoBlo for his latest film, Little Dixie, where he spoke about the possibility of closing out the series.
You know, we keep bouncing back and forth. There is a script. James DeMonaco wrote it. And he wants to direct the last one. He had directed the last three or four. It centers on Leo, my character. Frank Grillo made his first appearance as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The actor said that he had “signed a seven-picture deal” with Marvel Studios, but Crossbones was killed off with his very next appearance in Captain America: Civil War. This naturally left Grillo a little disappointed that his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was cut so short, which is why he initially turned down a cameo in Avengers: Endgame.
While speaking with Empire Magazine, Frank Grillo said “There was supposed to be a lot more of Crossbones. I was the one character who I think should be in more of them, and these other idiot characters are still there. I was being an asshole, being a bit petulant.” Thankfully, Grillo’s son brought him to his senses. “He said, ‘This is going to be the biggest movie in the world,’ and he was right,...

The Forever Purge was supposed to be the last movie. It should be possible to state that if the Purge no longer has a set date and time, it should have reached a critical point, making it a continual nightmare, not just a part-time thing. But it sounds as though director James DeMonaco is confident that he has one more movie left in the tank and can bring the story home in a manner that will leave people content that the story has been told. How to expand on the Forever Purge is still an odd idea, but the truth

The Forever Purge (pick up a copy Here), the fifth film in the Purge franchise, was said to be the final chapter in the series when it was first announced… but while doing press for the film last year, Purge creator James DeMonaco revealed that he had come up with an idea for one more sequel. One that would see Frank Grillo reprising the role of Leo Barnes from The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year. Then Grillo confirmed that he and DeMonaco were “committed” to making The Purge 6 together. A year and a half later, it doesn’t look like Universal has officially given the project a greenlight yet, but during an interview with Empire magazine (with thanks to Screen Rant for sharing the excerpt), Grillo said that he and DeMonaco are still working on pushing The Purge 6 forward toward production.

Just when you think Hollywood has produced all possible horror storylines, James DeMonaco chooses to raise the bar a little higher. Horror movies often have supernatural beings, vengeful individuals, or just plain lunatics we love to call psychopaths. But what happens when you live a night of horror legally authorized by your government? Admittedly, there are times we wish there were no laws in place to allow us to let out some steam. The Purge (2013) was the first installment of what we now know as the Purge Franchise. It would go on to produce a sequel, Anarchy (2014), and

Kind blue eyes. That’s the most striking part of the poster for The Black Phone, the latest Blumhouse horror movie from director Scott Derrickson. Filling the poster is the face of the Grabber, a kidnapper and child murderer who terrorizes a Denver suburb in 1978, covered with speckled gray paint. A mask covers the Grabber’s jaw, giving the killer an unsettling permanent grin, while a top hat and wide glasses accentuate his upper face. But it’s those eyes that stand out the most, somehow kind and sad, despite their ghastly surroundings, making the Grabber all the more terrifying.

Pete Davidson, who joined “Saturday Night Live” as a relative unknown and has become a superstar whose presence graces gossip pages daily, is expected to leave “Saturday Night Live” after the broadcast of this weekend’s season finale, according to a person familiar with the matter. He is one of a handful of long-serving cast members including Kenan Thompson, Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon whose tenure on the show has come up for scrutiny at the conclusion of recent seasons. Davidson joined the show in 2014 as a featured player at the age of 20, one of the youngest cast members in the program’s 47 seasons on air.
NBC declined to make producers at “SNL” available for comment.
His departure is likely to draw a new burst of attention to the long-running program, which typically uses its summer hiatus to recalibrate its cast of players and contributors.

Following a three-week hiatus, "Saturday Night Live" returned to NBC on Feb. 26 with John Mulaney as host. Given that Pete Davidson and Mulaney are friends in real life, fans naturally assumed we'd be treated to some hilarious skits from the pair, but sadly, Davidson wasn't in attendance. The 28-year-old comedian was also noticeably absent from the March 5 show with Oscar Issac. So, what's going on with Davidson?
Turns out that Davidson has been busy filming his new movie, "The Home." According to Deadline, the upcoming horror thriller, which is directed by James DeMonaco, stars Davidson as a troubled man named Max, who begins working at a retirement home. However, he soon realizes that its residents and caretakers hold some sinister secrets.

A veteran screenwriter and, more recently, an accomplished director, James DeMonaco has had a prolific career most commonly associated with The Purge franchise. Spanning five films and a television series, The Purge marked DeMonaco’s sophomore directorial outing and, aided by the upstart production company, Blumhouse, saw the filmmaker’s first box-office hit. DeMonaco, who also directed the second and third entries in the series, continues with the franchise, as a screenwriter, to this day (a rumored sixth installment is currently in the works). However, ties to his hometown of Staten Island remain at the forefront of DeMonaco’s creative endeavours, and his […]
