By the spring of 1988, several high-profile cases had brought the gang violence in Los Angeles to national attention. The fatal shootings of an 18-year-old college student and her 12-year-old neighbour were, according to a newspaper report, the 113th and 114th gang-related murders to have occurred in La County since the start of the beginning of 1988. The previous year saw 387 people killed in gang-related incidents.
Against this backdrop came Colors, Dennis Hopper’s unflinching and disturbingly authentic crime drama starring Robert Duvall and Sean Penn. Some of the film’s harshest critics called it exploitative and voyeuristic - a calculated attempt to cash in on the real violence that was regularly making headlines. Colors’ detractors were given further fuel when reports began to circulate of violent incidents occurring in...

Liam Gallagher will make his acting debut in a film about The Beatles. The Beady Eye frontman is to appear in an adaptation of Richard Dilello's The Longest Cocktail Party, with director Michael Winterbottom - best known for 24 Hour Party People, which documented Factory records and the legendary H Manchester music scene in the 1980s - noting the movie will be about the problems at Apple Records, the company founded by the legendary Hey Jude hitmakers. He said: 'Liam will have a part in it. He's all over it. It's about the mad chaos of Apple, so it's not dissimilar...

Michael Winterbottom is to music what Michael Bay is to supermodels. No one is better at inserting it into a motion picture. Steeping each of his films in a great sense of style both visually as well as sonically (see 9 Songs), it should come as no shock that the filmmaker is looking to direct a picture revolving around one of music’s most iconic entities: The Beatles.
The Playlist is reporting that Winterbottom (who last helmed The Trip, a film that will be the subject of a DVD review coming to GoD early next week), is set to helm The Longest Cocktail Party, a film based off of a Richard Dilello book of the same name [...]...

Film fans already got a glimpse at the early days of The Beatles’ career with 1994’s Backbeat, a dramatization of their days working the club scene in Hamburg. Now there’s a new film in the works that is going to tell the story of their last days together as a band. Richard Dilello worked as a gofer for The Beatles’ late-career recording company, Apple Records, between 1968 and 1970, and his written account of his time there The Longest Cocktail Party is going to serve as the source material for the new film. During his time working at Apple, Dilello established personal relationships with each member of The Beatles, as well as their closest friends and family, and his book is told from his own perspective, watching this huge world crumble with outside eyes. The film version of The Longest Cocktail Party is being produced by a team consisting of Michael Winterbottom, Oasis...

It's almost impossible to believe there haven't been far more movies made about The Beatles, especially considering they're easily one of the two most popular, iconic bands of all time (The Rolling Stones being the other). That's all about to change with news regarding the new biopic The Longest Cocktail Party, which is based on a book by Richard Dilello that highlights the major events during the band's latter years.
Producer Andrew Eaton told The Playlist that Michael Winterbottom (The Killer Inside Me, 9 Songs) will direct the film from the screenplay written by Jesse Armstrong (In the Loop).

It looks like a feature film about the career of the Beatles is well on its way to being made. Though they are one of the most popular bands of all time, few movies have dared tackle retelling the story of how they made it big. With the exception of the 2010 TV movie "Lennon Naked" that was based on the life of John Lennon, the closest Hollywood has come to capturing the magic of the Beatles was in the 2009 Lennon biopic "Nowhere Boy" and in 2007's Beatles-inspired "Across the Universe." But no longer.
The Playlist has learned that "In the Loop" screenwriter Jesse Armstrong has already penned an adaptation of Richard Dilello's book "The Longest Cocktail Party." The flick would be directed by "The Killer Inside Me" helmer Michael Winterbottom.

The Longest Cocktail Party will document tumultuous period between founding of Apple Records and sessions for Let It Be
Michael Winterbottom is to bring the story of the final years of the Beatles to the big screen in The Longest Cocktail Party, reports the Playlist.
The Fab Four have been immortalised on film on many occasions, but Winterbottom's take would appear to be a rare glimpse of the band at the peak of their powers. Based on Richard Dilello's book, it will trace the timeline from the founding of Apple Records in 1968 to the tumultuous sessions for the final Beatles album, Let It Be.
Dilello worked for Apple Records between 1968 and 1970, writing The Longest Cocktail Party about his experiences. The title is a reference to the company's penchant for entertaining guests at lavish free events in the final days of the swinging 60s, a habit which helped bring Apple...

They’re both the most successful and greatest (come on, don’t even try to dispute it) band in recording history, yet we’ve never really had a Beatles movie. There is the trio of films that they appeared in during their recording days — the fictional A Hard Day’s Night and Help!, along with the underseen documentary Let It Be — but where is the Walk the Line-style tale about their incredible run? We got Martin Scorsese‘s great documentary on the life of George Harrison this month, yet that’s not a narrative piece.
This doesn’t exactly fulfill a desire to see one, but ThePlaylist has learned that Michael Winterbottom will direct an adaptation of Richard Dilello‘s The Longest Cocktail Party, a non-fiction account of the rise of the band’s new label, Apple Records, as well as the recording of Let It Be. As the previously-mentioned documentary showed,...

Music and Michael Winterbottom have always seemed to be natural bedfellows. And no, that’s not a 9 Songs joke – the director has either forged superb soundtracks for his films or, in the case of 24 Hour Party People, made one of the most compelling biopics of a musical movement put on celluloid. So he would seem to be the safest pair of hands for a film that promises to chronicle the difficult forming of Apple Records and the eventual collapse of The Beatles in The Longest Cocktail Party. The story would follow John, Paul, George and Ringo as they set up their own company, through to the acrimony and accusations around the recording of Let It Be.As reported by the fine fellows at The Playlist, Winterbottom and regular producing partner Andrew Eaton have been involved with the project for some time. Liam Gallagher the movie mogul – for now
Liam Gallagher jets into Cannes in his new guise as a movie mogul. He's got the smoky shades and the Superfly gait. The press aren't sure what to make of him. "He's become a caricature," one whispers to me. "He should be in a Mike Leigh film."

In the past week, news has emerged of two competing Beatles projects, each taking a very different approach to its subject matter. In one corner is Oasis frontman-turned-movie producer Liam Gallagher. His plan is to adapt former Apple Records PR guy Richard Dilello's book, "The Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider's Diary of the Beatles, Their Million Dollar Apple Empire and Its Wild Rise and Fall," into a feature film. There's no writer, director or cast yet, but we can at least expect the title to change (read: shorten). Gallagher is expected to make a formal announcement about the project next week at the Cannes Film Festival.
In the other corner is author Alan Goldsher and his upcoming book "Paul Is Undead: The British Zombie Invasion," which Deadline reports has been optioned for a film treatment by "Pulp Fiction" producers Michael Chamberg and Stacey Sher. The story, told as an...

Two new projects based around The Beatles are in the works, but both have very different takes on the Fab Four.
The first is an adaptation of Richard Dilello's memoir "The Longest Cocktail Party" for Revolution Films which will be launched at Cannes next week reports The BBC.
Dilello served as the 'Client Liaison Officer', an in-house youth consultant and errand boy, at the Savile Row headquarters of British record company Apple Corps in the late 60's.
He became acquainted with each of the Beatles, many of their wives and girlfriends, and the various agents and managers who worked with Apple. He was there during the breakup of the band and the beginning of their solo careers.
Former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher owns the rights to the book and is developing the film with producer Andrew Eaton.

During his heyday, Liam Gallagher once said, "I'm not like John Lennon, who thought he was the great Almighty. I just think I'm John Lennon." It's a great rock n' roll quote, reinforcing what everyone pretty much knew, anyway. And now that Oasis is dunzo, Gallagher will work on a bio-pic about the break-up of that band he idolized for all these years.
It's being reported that Liam, whose brother and Oasis songwriter Noel dissolved the band last year, is working from the 1972 book The Longest Cocktail Party: An Insider's Diary of the Beatles, Their Million Dollar Apple Empire and Its Wild Rise and Fall by Richard Dilello. No director has been named, however The Killer Inside Me director Michael Winterbottom is producing the adaptation with his usual production partner Andrew Eaton. Curiously enough, their shingle is called Revolution Films.

Looks like another Beatles movie is taking shape from the help of Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher (the one that hates Americans, gets drunk and talks a lot of shit). Producer Andrew Eaton and filmmaker Michael Winterbottom are trying to bring Richard Dilello’s memoir The Longest Cocktail Party to the big screen with Revolution Films. Published in 1973, the book chronicles the rise and fall of the Beatles, the beginning of each’s solo career, and the history of The Beatles‘ record company Apple Corps (Dilello worked in the press office). Gallagher comes into this article because he currently owns the rights to the book – so it’s safe to say he’s a fan of The Beatles, right?
