WGA West’s Middle Eastern Writers Committee Urges Hollywood To Be More Inclusive, Less Stereotypical
Members of the WGA West’s Middle Eastern Writers Committee are urging the film and television industry to be more inclusive and less stereotypical in its storytelling.
“Reach out to us. Get to know our work. And most of all, take more chances on us to both tell our own stories and contribute to the ones being crafted in writers rooms all over town,” they wrote Monday in an open letter to the industry. But they noted: “How can we get in the rooms to tell other stories if we’re not even being hired to tell our own?”
The group said they formed the committee “primarily on the basis of one disappointing fact. As reported in the Wgaw Inclusion Report of 2020, Middle Eastern writers are dead last, making up only 0.3% of employed writers. You read that right. 0.3%. That’s pretty close to 0%. As I pressed play on the first episode of “Run the World,” I wasn’t intending to mainline the entire eight-episode season in one greedy gulp. But as a blessedly rare warm New York City breeze floated through my open window, Leigh Davenport’s lush new series about four friends having a vivid, game-changing Harlem summer proved too good and fitting to resist.
“Run the World,” premiering May 16 on Starz, is immediately self-aware of its place in the TV canon, particularly as a witty dramedy about four thirty-something women falling in and out of love and lust in New York. In the pilot, frustrated writer Ella (Andrea Bordeaux) fondly refers to her on and off boyfriend Anderson (Nick Sagar) as her “Big,” as in the infamous “Mr. Big” who drove Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw so wild throughout “Sex and the City.” But on “Run the World,” Ella’s...

"Malibu Country" has lost its second showrunner in its debut season, Entertainment Weekly reports.
The show's writer-producer Nastaran Dibai -- who took over for creator Kevin Abbott as the showrunner of the Reba McEntire-fronted comedy in November -- is also leaving.
"Malibu Country," which stars McEntire as a newly-divorced country music singer who moves to the West Coast for a fresh start, has already wrapped production on its first season.
The series has averaged 7 million viewers and a 1.7 rating on Friday nights, where it's coupled with Tim Allen's "Last Man Standing." The decent numbers put "Malibu Country" on the bubble for a second season. If ABC did opt to renew "Malibu Country," the hunt for a third showrunner would be on.

Dibai, who helped stabilize the show after the shakeup, has opted to depart. I hear she wanted to make significant changes to the comedy for Season 2, something ABC brass weren’t willing to commit too. There is speculation that Abbott, who has been very close with McEntire dating back to her WB sitcom Reba, which he ran, may rejoin the series if it makes it to a second season. While its Friday companion, Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing is all but assured a renewal, Malibu Country is heavily on the bubble,...

Exclusive: Nastaran Dibai has been elevated to executive producer/showrunner of Malibu Country. This is the first showrunner gig for Dibai, who had been a co-executive producer on the ABC/ABC Studios freshman comedy since after the pilot. Dibai succeeds Malibu Country creator/executive producer Kevin Abbott who left the series a month ago when he checked himself into rehab. Abbott, who also serves as an executive producer of ABC’s Last Man Standing, has just completed his treatment. He will resume his duties as an executive producer of Last Man Standing but won’t be back on Malibu Country, at least for the foreseeable future. ABC and ABC Studios had put the succession plan with Dibai in place when Abbott originally left and opted not to shake things up again on a show, which is still finding its footing. Additionally, it is unclear whether Abbott is ready to take...

Updated: CBS has bought a multi-camera comedy from brothers Tim and Michael Hobert. The project, produced by Warner Bros Television, is about a newly married man who happens to be from a big family… he just doesn’t know it yet. It stems from Hoberts’ real-life experiences. The jury's still out on the future of some ABC series (we're looking at you, FlashForward and V), but the network is already hard at work on a contingency plan: It's developing 11 new dramas for fall, including fresh projects from uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Grey's Anatomy honcho Shonda Rhimes. And there's good news coming out of the network's laugh department: the success of Wednesday night series Cougar Town, The Middle, and Modern Family has prompted ABC to continue spending big bucks on more comedies -- thus its decision to order 12 half-hour pilots this year. Here are the network's fall pilots,...

Barry Sonnenfeld is taking up Persian at ABC.
The network has handed out a pilot order to the single-camera comedy "Funny in Farsi," with Sonnenfeld on board to direct and executive produce.
Based on Firoozeh Dumas' memoir, the ABC Studios-produced "Farsi" is inspired by the Iranian-born author's experiences growing up in Newport Beach, Calif., during the 1970s. Dumas was 7 when her dad, an engineer, moved her family from Iran to the U.S.
The book was adapted by Jeffrey Hodes and Nastaran Dibai ("According to Jim"), who penned the pilot script.
"Farsi" is the first pilot script to which Sonnenfeld has responded strongly since ABC's "Pushing Daisies," which he directed, winning an Emmy for his work.
Sonnenfeld first spotted "Farsi" last season when ABC gave it a director-contingent pilot order in February, but the network shelved it after the helmer was not available to direct.

A trio of pilots -- CBS' drama "Confessions of a Contractor" and two ABC comedies, single-camera "Funny in Farsi" and "Planet Lucy" -- have been pushed.
The projects, all three of which are based on books, were picked up with contingencies (cast-contingent for "Contractor" and "Lucy" and director-contingent for "Farsi").
They were put on hold after the contingencies could not be met by the networks' Friday deadlines.
The 20th TV-produced "Confessions of a Contractor," based on Richard Murphy's book, is an insider's look at the sexy and provocative world of L.A. seen through the eyes of a successful contractor. Murphy penned the script and is exec producing with Shawn Ryan and Jeff Okin.

Lifetime has given a full-season pickup to "Rita Rocks."
The network has ordered seven additional episodes of the comedy series from Media Rights Capital, bringing the first-season order to 20.
"Rita," starring Nicole Sullivan as a wife and mother who forms a garage band, premiered Oct. 20, airing as a strip for a week before moving into its regular time slot at 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays. The series, which marks Lifetime's first original comedy in 10 years, is averaging 956,000 viewers per first-run episode.
" 'Rita Rocks' was developed as a companion to Lifetime's most popular comedy, 'Reba,' and 'Rita Rocks' has either built on or held the 'Reba' audience for five of the first six original episodes," Lifetime executive vp entertainment JoAnn Alfano said. "Having a nearly 100% audience retention rate is unheard of when launching a new comedy, but 'Rita Rocks' has achieved that feat."

Lifetime has picked up half-hour comedy "Rita Rocks" to series.
The cable network ordered 13 episodes of the sitcom, from Media Rights Capital, for a fall premiere.
"Rita" stars Nicole Sullivan as Rita Clements, who, unfulfilled by her harried life as a married, working mom, regains her identity by re-creating her glory days as a musician in a garage band. Richard Ruccolo, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Kelly Gould and Raviv Ullman also star.
"Rita", which will air as part of a one-hour comedy block alongside off-net sitcom "Reba", marks Lifetime's first new original primetime comedy series since "Maggie" and "Oh Baby" debuted in 1998. "Maggie" ended its run in 1999, and "Baby" bowed out the following year. (Other recent comedy efforts, including "Lovespring International", aired outside of primetime.)
"Our loyal viewers are fans of our comedy programming, and we know they will think Rita rocks too," Lifetime president of entertainment Susanne Daniels said.
Stan Zimmerman and Jim Berg, Jeffrey Hodes and Nastaran Dibai are executive producers. Franco E. Bario produces.
