Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film has long been a huge fan of the Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival. Every year we’re extremely impressed with the way it pokes, prods, pushes and stabs the horror genre in entertaining new directions through its diverse selection of boundary breaking movies. Some of our favorite horror flicks of the past few years — such as James Eaves‘ Bane, Rona Mark‘s Strange Girls and Stuart Simpson‘s El Monstro Del Mar — came to us through Spooky Movie.
This year will mark Spooky Movie’s seventh year in existence and it should prove to be a major milestone in the fest’s history as it will move to a new home at the prestigious AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, Maryland. As the festival busily prepares for their biggest edition yet to be held on October 10-18, we thought we’d check...

We’re recreating Shock Theater at Horrorhound Weekend March 24th complete with Horror hosts and a Super-8 twist. The original Shock Theater was a package of 52 classic horror films from the Golden Age of Universal Studios that were released to television in 1957, sparking the monster kid craze as well as the launching of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine. Shock Theater was usually broadcast late at night and introduced by a costumed host who would occasionally interrupt the movie with bad monster puns. Zacherly, Ghoulardi, and Vampira were the most famous of these but there were many local hosts as well.

Horror fans today are spoiled. With the vast array of films available on DVD and Blu-ray via storefronts like Best Buy and Fye, online outlets like Amazon and Deep Discount, and rental/streaming services such as Netflix, there are few films that are unattainable. Virtually anything one might hear of is available some way, somewhere. But it wasn't always so...
Back at a time before disc (or VHS for that matter), the only way - and I mean the Only way - to see classic and not so classic genre pictures was on broadcast television. As a kid, I remember getting the local TV Guide and a yellow highlighter and systematically going through the listings, marking each and every show time of movies I'd heard about either from friends or ones that were obliquely mentioned in Forry Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland . I would meticulously go over each entry...

It's always nice to see anyone involved in horror take home an award. But when you see a local guy who's obviously got a great love of the genre receiving accolades, it's that much sweeter. And that was exactly the case this week when Tennessee's own Dr. Gangrene was nominated for three Regional Emmy Awards.
Dr. Gangrene is played by writer/producer and all-around lover of horror Larry Underwood. With his partner in crime, Cameron McCasland, Dr. Gangrene nabbed nominations in the made-for-television movie, best public service campaign, and best short film categories.
Well done, boys! Here's a Regional Tip of the Scalpel to show just how proud of you Doctor Gash and your friends at Dread Central are! Keep up the great work!

So, what’s it really like to make a go of it on the festival circuit, especially when you’re a much beloved cult filmmaking icon? The Washington City Paper runs a timeline of Jeff Krulik’s Heavy Metal Picnic film festival odyssey of 2011 — and it’s not a rosy journey. Much of the article is framed by a series of update emails that Krulik sends to his supporters, a group of people of which I’m a member. And those emails, thanks to Krulik’s incredible directness, frequently include some of the most hilarious exchanges ever. (The great portrait of Krulik above by Darrow Montgomery is from the article.)The Count Gore De Vol documentary Every Other Day Is Halloween is still racking up great reviews, this time from the Spooky Vegan. If you haven’t had the chance to enjoy this gem yourself, this is the perfect time of year to do so.

When can a documentary also be considered a horror movie?
Sure, there are loads of documentaries on the subject of horror. Some can be charming, like Every Other Day Is Halloween, C.W. Prather’s profile of horror host Count Gore De Vol. Some can inject fictional elements to blend genres, like J.T. Petty’s S&Man. Some can cover truly unsettling subjects, like Paul von Stoetzel’s Snuff: A Documentary About Killing on Camera to come close to being an actual horror movie.
But rare is the non-fiction film that through its style, design and intent properly matches the tropes of the fictional horror flick. And perhaps this creature is so rare that only one exists: Through the Weeping Glass, the new, short documentary by the Brothers Quay.
Known primarily for their nightmarish animated films of decay and rot, the Quays were commissioned to make a documentary about Philadelphia’s infamous Mütter Museum,...

Herschell Gordon Lewis, the Godfather of Gore, was born today, June 15, in 1929.
After successfully conquering the nudie picture genre, Lewis invented the modern splatter movie with his 1963 classic, Blood Feast. Fast forward to the present and the man is still proving he’s got what it takes with his latest film, the satirical gore-fest The Uh-Oh Show, which will be released on DVD this August.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of one of the most important days in underground film history. On May 31, 1986, public access TV guys Jeff Krulik and John Heyn “borrowed” some equipment from their station, drove out to the Capital Centre arena in Largo, Maryland and videotaped a bunch of stoners in the parking lot partying before a Judas Priest concert. The edited together footage would become one of the most beloved bootlegged classics of all time: Heavy Metal Parking Lot. Watch it again embedded above and feel the love. And the drugs.
Tell us what your favorite heavy metal bits are!
(With us, we mutter “Yo, Priest is the best man!” for hours after viewing every time, so we love that guy.)
From initial showings in Krulik’s and Heyn’s living rooms to migrating its way onto L.A. video store shelves where it ended up on Nirvana’s tour bus,...

Legendary B-movie producer David F. Friedman passed away on Monday in a nursing home in Anniston, Alabama. He was 87 years old.
Although director Herschell Gordon Lewis is typically credited as the Godfather of Gore, i.e. the man who invented the splatter movie with his infamous 1963 horror flick Blood Feast, the film was in fact a collaboration between Lewis and Friedman. The two men came up with the general story while Lewis directed it and Friedman produced.
The two men had originally started out making “nudie cutie” and nudist colony cheapo films with titles such as The Adventures of Lucky Pierre (1961) and Nature’s Playmates (1962), until Lewis struck upon the idea of making a film that included the kind of graphic violence that Hollywood studios had shied away from.
Friedman produced Blood Feast with just $24,500 and the film was allegedly a runaway box office smash, encouraging the two gore-mongers to...

Gore is good for you! (And I mean that in more ways than one.) The Internet’s favorite bloodsucker Count Gore De Vol interviews the Godfather of Gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis, who, at 81-years-old, is out there promoting his latest blood-soaked masterpiece, The Uh-Oh Show!. With a spry and devious glint still in Lewis’ eye, there’s no denying that a full and lengthy career directing some of the most grotesque movies ever made is a healthy key to keeping oneself eternally young at heart.
After letting Lewis plug his newest film, the good Count does begin inquiring about Lewis’ earliest days in the gore business. (And leaving out mention of Lewis’ previous efforts directing nudist camp movies.) It’s a familiar story to those who have read up on the director’s career, but it’s good to hear him talk personally about gore being the mother of invention,...

The quartet of films feature lunatic hillbillies, zombies and the return of two living legends of horror: Count Gore De Vol and Herschell Gordon Lewis.
The Opening Night film will be the festival circuit hit Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, which previously debuted to great acclaim at Sundance and then went on to win an Audience Award at SXSW and the Best First Feature Award at the Fantasia Film Festival. Ghosts, UFOs and werewolves … Oh my! Embedded above is the very cool opening to the new Spooky Movie Television show that will be debuting on TVs in the Washington, D.C. area in early July. Spooky Movie Television is, of course, an offshoot of the annual Spooky Movie Film Festival. It will be a one-hour program showing a selection of short films that have screened at the fest. Plus, the show will be hosted by the diabolical Dr. Sarcofiguy and his accursed stalker Boo dePest. (Actors John Dimes and Leanna Chamish respectively.)
Dr. Sarcofiguy — and John Dimes — appeared in the documentary Every Other Day Is Halloween. Dimes was inspired by the documentary’s subject, Count Gore De Vol, to carry on the tradition...

Revisit the good ol’ days when local TV stations actually employed local talent beyond the nightly news in Every Other Day Is Halloween, C.W. Prather’s wonderful profile of Washington, D.C.’s legendary late night horror host Count Gore De Vol. This wickedly entertaining documentary is now available on DVD at Amazon and other retailer/rental outlets.
Underneath the cape, fangs and pancake makeup, the good Count is actually performer Dick Dyszel, who appeared as several different characters on Wdca-tv Channel 20 in the nation’s capital throughout the 1970s. During the day, he entertained the kiddies as Bozo the Clown and hosted cartoon shows as the sci-fi themed Captain 20. But, at night, he transformed himself into Count Gore De Vol for the adults — and the naughty children who dared to stay up late watching old horror movies.
But, all good things must come to an end — or not!

The eighth annual Rondo Hatton Awards have come to pass, and we have all the results for you, including one winner who we're kind of shocked about ... us!
That's right, kids, your love has carried us over once again, and we're both proud and humbled to announce that Dread Central has won the Rondo Award for "Best Website". Honestly? We were honored just to have been nominated. Being up against twenty-nine other quality sites, we never thought we'd win. You guys have no idea how much this means to us as we've always considered the Rondos to be reserved only for the very best in our genre. To be revered as one of "those" for even just a fleeting moment is something we consider to be prestigious in the highest regard.
But make no mistake ... even though technically we are the actual recipients of it, this award belongs very much...

Fangoria ad for Every Other Day Is Halloween DVD
I absolutely hate corny stories like the one I’m about to tell, but this one’s absolutely true: When I was a teenager, I used to fantasize about the day I might find my name in an issue of Fangoria, the horror movie magazine that I bought and devoured religiously. I wanted to be in there so bad, either as a filmmaker or screenwriter or even as a correspondent.
Little did I fantasize that it would take becoming a film quote whore that would get my words published in that mag. And I totally wish I had thought of it sooner, otherwise it might not have taken me this long.
Ok, it’s not my name either, but up above is an ad printed in the April 2010 issue of Fangoria promoting the release of C.W. Prather’s amazing documentary Every Other Day Is Halloween,...

Happy Birthday, monster movies! An unprecedented birthday party is planned over at the newly launched 100YearsofMonsterMovies.com website for the monster movie genre, which turns 100 years old this month. Beginning Friday, March 26, at 5Pm Edt, the “100 Years of Monster Movies” campaign kicks off with a nonstop webcast of monster movies from classics like Night of the Living Dead and The Wasp Woman to modern gorefests like Creature from the Hillbilly Lagoon and Bacterium.
The event, which will be simulcast on ChillerTV.com, ends Sunday night at 9Pm with a screening of the monster movie that started it all, Thomas Edison’s 1910 short Frankenstein.
“We want to celebrate the 100th birthday of the monster movie with an old fashioned scare-a-thon,” said Executive Producer Joe Sena of pop-culture marketing company SphereWerx Micromedia. “Among his other inventions, Edison invented the monster movie in 1910, and we felt this was a fitting way to mark the occasion.

One of the great things about producing Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film is that it has introduced me to the work of underground filmmakers from all over the world that I would not have heard of otherwise. Sure, there are tons of fantastic, talented filmmakers in the U.S. whose work I love seeing and reviewing, but there’s something exciting — especially as someone who’s rarely ever traveled — about getting DVDs from foreign lands.
Also, I wrote on the site recently that I didn’t know what types of films could truly be called “innovative” these days. “Innovative” doesn’t automatically conjure up a stamp of quality, of course. Plus, this past year I’ve seen tons of films that have been uniquely creative and have pushed boundaries. Lonnie Martin and Cindy Marie Martin of Ningen Manga Productions dropped us a line with an update on Women’S Studies, the feminism-oriented fright feature that, at last report, was slated to hit DVD this year. Lonnie, who wrote and directed the movie, reveals why that hasn’t happened—and how the flick has been improved as a result.
“In October 2008, we rendered the services of a sales agent who quickly got us a direct-to-dvd distribution deal,” he tells Fango. “However, due to the economic climate, the company sat on it, giving us a vague ‘fall 2009’ release promise. As we got into this past summer, it become clear that they had lost interest in Women’S Studies. They had a couple of low-budget horror titles with no marquee stars bomb, and decided they didn’t want to release Studies. At that point, we were stuck waiting out various contracts.
