J.K. Simmons has joined the cast of Jason Reitman’s SNL 1975, and not only will the Oscar winner be playing Hollywood legend Milton Berle, but he’ll have the notable distinction of becoming the first actual SNL host to join the cast of the Sony movie.
Simmons hosted the Jan. 31, 2015 episode of Saturday Night Live, which featured D’Angelo as the musical guest. At the time, Simmons was riding high off an Oscar nomination for Whiplash, and he would go on to win the Academy Award following his SNL hosting stint.
Meanwhile, Berle hosted SNL on April 14, 1979, and Ornette Coleman was his musical guest. It’s unclear where Berle fits into Reitman’s movie at this moment in time.

The 2007 John C. Reilly comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has become a cult hit in recent years, largely as a result of the skill with which it dissects and eviscerates the genre it satirizes.
The film so deftly laid bare the tropes and cliches of the rock star biopic that many predicted it would forever change the way filmmakers approached stories about dead celebs.
And for a while, it seemed like the trick had worked.
Leaving aside for a moment any discussion about the quality of these films, there's no denying that Elvis, Blonde, Maestro, Jackie, Priscilla, and Oppenheimer all offered new takes on a very familiar subgenre.
(That last one, admittedly, is a bit of an outlier, as we're not sure if a theoretical physicist -- even one who altered the course of world history -- can properly be called a celebrity.)

It’s one of the widely known perils of modern fame: The selfie request. Everywhere a celebrity publicly treads, there are fans who might suddenly approach — eager, excited, nervous — with phone in hand, bursting to ask the question: “Can-i-get-a-photo?”
Most celebrities acquiesce (Keanu Reeves, for instance, has been called “the friendly expert in fan photos”). Some routinely refuse (such as Cillian Murphy, who has explained, “I just think it’s better to say hello and have a little conversation”).
Larry David, not surprisingly, is one of the latter.
The Curb Your Enthusiasm creator and star explained to Conan O’Brien on his podcast that he has come up with a unique way of rejecting selfies.
“I tried something new,” he said. “I said, ‘You know what? I can’t take pictures outside. There’s people, I can’t take pictures outside.’ And then when I was inside, I would say, ‘You know what?...

Jason Reitman is staying mighty busy these days. Less than 24 hours after the release of the latest trailer for "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," four major casting announcements were made for his next project, "SNL 1975." The film will attempt to tell the true story of what went on behind the scenes before the broadcast premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on NBC, highlighting the real-time bedlam with some of the most legendary names in American comedy. Reitman co-wrote the script with his "Ghostbusters" collaborator Gil Kenan and is basing the story on the firsthand accounts of those who were there. Lest we forget, Reitman's father is the legendary Ivan Reitman, so these comedy titans were the friends and colleagues of the family. If anyone can get serious insight, it's Reitman.

While they've been focused on their Ghostbusters films of late, with the newest, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire less than two months away now, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan have also been putting the pieces together for something that draws on no little amount of nostalgia (not to mention a connection to Dan Aykroyd): SNL 1975, about the fraught first night of Saturday Night Live. The duo (with Reitman directing and Kenan writing) have built the cast and are now adding Lamorne Morris, Dylan O’Brien, Cory Michael Smith and Matt Wood to the line-up.

Saturday Night Live will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, which will also mark the 49th anniversary of the first person to complain that the show isn’t as funny as it used to be. Jason Reitman is set to helm a Saturday Night Live movie about the broadcast of the very first show, and Deadline reports that the project has found its Lorne Michaels.
Gabriel Labelle, who broke out as the star of Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, is set to play Lorne Michaels in the Saturday Night Live movie. With the exception of a five-year period in the 1980s, Michaels has produced the show since its inception and will continue to do so until he (possibly) turns the reigns over to Tina Fey. Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) has also signed on to play NBC producer Dick Ebersol in the movie, with Rachel Sennot (Shiva Baby) playing SNL writer Rosie Shuster.

The late night sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" is still going strong. The series is currently in the middle of its 49th season, and word on the street is that there's quite the celebration around the corner for the show's 50th anniversary, which will come around this fall. There have been rumblings that series creator and longtime executive producer Lorne Michaels may step down from his post at "SNL" when the 50th season is over, but there hasn't been any confirmation just yet, even though Tina Fey seems to be primed to take the gig if that happens. However, there's another big "SNL" event coming soon too, in the form of a movie about the show's premiere on October 11, 1975.
Last spring, Sony Pictures set director Jason Reitman to direct "SNL 1975," a movie that will chronicle the real-time, behind-the-scenes chaos and miraculous magic leading right up to the show's debut on NBC.

Justin Timberlake will return to “Saturday Night Live” in the wake of backlash following ex-girlfriend Britney Spears’ shocking memoir “The Woman in Me.”
In the memoir, Spears alleged Timberlake encouraged her to have an abortion, among other revelations about their relationship. Spears also recounted a cringe encounter between Timberlake and Ginuwine; the audiobook narration of the exchange went viral thanks to Oscar winner Michelle Williams’ accent impersonating Timberlake. (Smart money is on Timberlake appearing in a sketch about this in some form.)
The Emmy and Grammy-winning musician will appear in the January 27 episode of “Saturday Night Live” with Dakota Johnson hosting. Johnson will be promoting her upcoming superhero film “Madame Web.”
In 2023, Timberlake reunited with *Nsync band members for animated film “Trolls Band Together.” Timberlake also recently appeared in Benicio Del Toro’s “Reptile.”
The “Social Network” star will take the “SNL” stage for his fifth solo musical guest appearance.

Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) is attached as former NBC executive Dick Ebersol, while Sennott (Bottoms) will play Michaels’ ex-wife Rosie Shuster.
Reitman wrote the script with Gil Kenan, based on the pair’s extensive interviews with all of the show’s living cast, scribes and crew. Reitman and Kenan previously co-wrote Sony’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife and its forthcoming sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which hits theaters in March.
SNL 1975 counts Reitman, Kenan, Jason Blumenfeld, Erica Mills and Peter Rice as producers.

As the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live approaches, so too does the retirement of Lorne Michaels. Having been with the show for the majority of its run since debuting in 1975, Michaels plans to take his final step into Studio 8H after SNL wraps up that season. So, who could take over once he’s gone? One name that has been in the conversation for quite some time is former SNL cast member Tina Fey.
Speaking on the red carpet at this week’s Primetime Emmy Awards, Lorne Michaels said, “It could easily be Tina Fey, but you know, there are a lot of people who are there now who are also, you know…Tina’s brilliant and great at everything…She’s a very important person in my life.” To date, Saturday Night Live has nearly 90 Emmys, the most of any show in history. Comedian and actress Tina Fey cut her teeth at "Saturday Night Live" as both a cast member and eventually a head writer, where she also occupied the Weekend Update desk alongside Jimmy Fallon. If a new rumor is to be believed, there's a chance she might be returning to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, and it won't be for a revival of her "SNL"-inspired comedy series "30 Rock."
The New York Post is citing an unknown source who claims that Tina Fey is currently being courted to take over as the executive producer of "SNL" whenever series creator and longtime showrunner Lorne Michaels chooses to retire. Considering the source, we should take this with a grain of salt right now, because plenty of worthless rumors have come out of the New York Post over the years -- especially since another source in the same story says the rumors are untrue.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s Tmrw Sports Adds Justin Bieber and DJ Khaled As Investors (Exclusive)
A handful of heavyweights from the music industry are betting that America has an unmet appetite for golf content.
Justin Bieber, DJ Khaled, Macklemore, Darius Rucker and Jake Owen have signed on as investors in Tmrw Sports, a sports, media and entertainment company co-founded by golfers Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, and media veteran Mike McCarley.
The first venture from Tmrw Sports is a made-for-tv golf league called the Tgl, which will develop tech-forward golf competitions, to be held in a custom-built arena live in primetime. Woods, McIlroy, Adam Scott, Jon Rahm and other PGA Tour pros have already committed to participating when it goes live next year.
While Tmrw Sports’ initial investment round was led by Connect Ventures and 25madison Ventures, it has since added a who’s who of backers from the sports, entertainment and tech worlds. MLB star Mike Trout, NBA legends Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade,...

Jason Reitman has set another feature at Sony Pictures, with the studio ordering a film based on the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” in October 1975.
Reitman and his “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” co-writer Gil Kenan penned the original screenplay for the project, drawing from the pair’s series of interviews with living cast, writers and crew members from the original production.
The untitled “SNL” feature continues Reitman and Kenan’s partnership with Sony Pictures, where they are currently in production on a sequel to “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” due to release in theaters this December. Kenan is directing the follow-up to Reitman’s 2021 entry of the sci-fi comedy series. The two collaborators signed an overall producing deal with Sony after the release of “Afterlife,” which grossed $204 million at the global box office against a $75 million production budget.
Reitman and Kenan will also produce the “SNL” feature, alongside regular partners Jason Blumenfeld and Erica Mills.

As the old saying goes, "Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan." NBC's "Saturday Night Live," a highly successful show that's been around so long it can accurately be labeled an institution, is no exception to that axiom. While it feels a little absurd to attribute the success of SNL to any single person given how many comedians and celebrities have greatly contributed to its longevity, it's generally presumed that creator Lorne Michaels is the show's guru.
However, Michaels did not come up with the concept for SNL out of whole cloth, at least not according to actor/writer/director Albert Brooks. Brooks was a frequent contributor to SNL (or "NBC's Saturday Night" as it was called during the first and second season), providing the show with a series of short films.
Yet, allegedly, Brooks was highly instrumental in the development of what the show became, thanks...

The '85/'86 year was a weird, weird season of "Saturday Night Live," a show that had any number of bad ones. SNL has remained an institution, curiously even through a regular series of slumps and mistakes. Try watching a complete episode during the daylight hours, and one will find a lot of lulls, bad ideas, and weird characters that never caught on. Throughout, however, enough talented comedians and sketches eked their way through to remain entrenched in the consciousness. Plus, celebrities and musical acts seemingly never lost their appetite for guest hosting, often drawing in big crowds just for their star appeal.
The show's 11th season was the first without its co-creator and star producer Lorne Michaels behind the scenes. He was replaced by NBC's Sports executive Dick Ebersol, and he seemingly didn't know what he was doing when it came to comedy. Ebersol once asked NBC if...

(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)
We're only six articles into this series, and I've already violated my critic's creed by furthering one of the most egregious filmmaking fallacies in existence. While I stand wholeheartedly behind my selections of Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, Robert De Niro, and Viola Davis, these artists are venerated for capital-a acting. They play serious, complicated people beset by demons both personal and societal. Critics expect them to dazzle us, to shed inspiring or unsettling light on the human condition. For too many years, they did not expect them to make us laugh.
When Streep, after a decade-plus of electrifying dramatic performances, appeared in the 1989 dark comedy "She-Devil" opposite TV superstar Roseanne Barr, many critics felt she was slumming. Ditto De Niro in Martin Brest's 1988 buddy-comedy "Midnight Run.

"Good evening. I'm Chevy Chase, and you're not." The weekly introduction from one of the human lightning rods of "Saturday Night Live" made it plain: no one does it like Chase. In the chronicle "Wild and Crazy Guys," telling the story of the comedy mavericks of '80s Hollywood, Nick de Semlyen designates Cornelius Crane "Chevy" Chase as the first "SNL" cast member to really hit the big time. The braggadocious funnyman's first and only season on the late-night variety series was a wild success — earning Emmys, a Golden Globe for writing, and New York Magazine's designation as "The funniest man in America" in 1975 — before moving onto the big screen with movies like "Tunnel Vision," "Foul Play" opposite Goldie Hawn, and eventually comedy juggernaut "Caddyshack."
The following decade would further boost Chase's ascension. The "National Lampoon's Vacation" movies yielded more of the physical comedy and straight-faced delivery that he was celebrated for,...

Dick Ebersol is one of the seminal figures in the past 50 years of broadcast television. He helped create “Saturday Night Live.” He hired Brandon Tartikoff, genius programmer and innovator, to revive NBC’s primetime fortunes. As president of NBC Sports, he oversaw the network’s Olympic strategy for many years. “Sunday Night Football” was his idea.
Ebersol recounts the high (and sometimes low) points of his career in television in a new autobiography, “From Saturday Night to Sunday Night: My Forty Years of Laughter, Tears and Touchdowns in TV,” published this week by Simon & Schuster.
While all of the great moments in his career were at NBC, Ebersol, now 75, started as a researcher at ABC Sports in 1967. There’s something so alluring about shows that tell interesting sports stories — ESPN’s “30 for 30” is one such show. When the show was created by Bill Simmons and Connor Schell, the overarching idea was to create 30 sports documentaries to mark ESPN’s 30 years anniversary. The first volume was a huge success and for that, the show had to continue. Well, it didn’t just continue, it also grew into a franchise.

Covering the Olympics is like taking a car out for a drive every two years. You’d like to think that the engine will start up every time, but if it’s a machine that lies dormant for too many months in between, there’s no guarantee.
It’s not as if NBC and its various broadcasting partners haven’t been trying to prime their viewers for Tokyo 2020, but up to and through this version of the Summer Games, there’s been a vagueness to what the Olympics actually stand for. Comedian Jim Belushi was only on “Saturday Night Live” for a short stretch between 1983 and 1985, but he sure made an impression. Belushi, whose brother John was one of the original cast members of “SNL,” reflected on his time on the sketch show in a recent interview with Vulture. As the first cast member to be fired, then rehired, Belushi said the experience, though difficult, was the best thing that could’ve happened to him.
“Very simple: I was out of control. It was the best thing to ever happen to me. I was out of my mind. I was throwing a fire extinguisher at [executive producer] Dick Ebersol, a hissy fit,” said Belushi, who appeared on the show in seasons nine and 10.

Now “SNL” fans will be able to get their fix of Coneheads, Mister Robinson and Mango Boy all in one place. Two days before the NBC sketch-comedy series returns for its 46th season, the entire 45-season catalogue will be available on Peacock, starting Oct. 1.
Up until now, only the most recent five seasons were able to stream on the NBCU-backed service, along with a curated list of older sketches. Earlier this year, Peacock announced it would house all prior seasons of “SNL.”
Hulu had been streaming the first five seasons that featured Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner, along with seasons 30-45. That meant that the entire 1980s and 1990s run, including the five years that Dick Ebersol ran the show, have not been able to stream anywhere. It’s not known if the musical performances from past episodes will be included, since there are typically separate...

Pete Bevacqua has been promoted to chairman of NBC Sports Group.
With the promotion, Bevacqua becomes only the third chairman in the Group’s history, along with Mark Lazarus and Dick Ebersol. Lazarus has since risen up NBCUniversal’s corporate depth chart, where he serves as chairman of NBCU television and streaming. Bevacqua joined NBCUniversal in September 2018 as President, NBC Sports Group, overseeing programming, marketing, digital, the NBC Sports Regional Networks, and all Golf businesses. In February 2019, Bevacqua assumed oversight of the entire sports division.
Under Bevacqua, NBC Sports renewed its PGA Tour deal for nine more years and acquired one of the new NFL Wild Card games as part of its expanded playoffs this season, which will simulcast on Peacock (along with NBC). In June, NBC Sports re-acquired the rest of the media rights for golf’s U.S. Open through 2026, buying out the rest of Fox’s deal.
