The strike may have delayed and abbreviated the third season of Abbott Elementary but Quinta Brunson went into it feeling pretty confident that her comedy wasn’t going anywhere: she was told that ABC had picked up the series for a fourth season.
While appearing at Deadline’s Contenders TV on Sunday, Brunson — who was joined on stage by Tyler James Williams (Gregory), Chris Perfetti (Jacob) and William Stanford Davis (Mr. Johnson) — recalled how incredible it felt to know that “ABC trusted us” before they even began production on season 3.
The news of the pickup was made public in February at the Television Critics Associaton press tour.
The comedy just wrapped production last week on the third season. Brunson, who plays Janine in the comedy that she created for ABC, said she still marvels at how far her Emmy-winning comedy has come.

Abbott Elementary isn’t going anywhere.
The comedy series has been renewed for Season 4 at ABC, as announced by Willard R. Abbott Elementary’s own Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) during Disney’s Television Critics Association Press Tour.
The renewal comes on the heels of the much-anticipated Season 3 premiere, which was delayed due to last year’s strikes. The episode not only gave a fitting explanation for why the camera crews had missed the first half of the school year but also had some supersized guest stars.
Season 2 of Abbott Elementary was quite the hit for ABC, averaging a 3.56 rating among adults 18-49 in the 35-day viewing window. That marked the strongest season average for an ABC comedy since the 2019-2020 season.

“Abbott Elementary” Season 3 was delayed by five months — known in our world as the 2023 Hollywood strikes, but also known and acknowledged, surprisingly, in the supersized premiere episode, “Career Day.” The explanation? The Abbott Elementary documentary crew got robbed after a teachers’ night out, returning only after they were able to save up the money for new equipment.
The episode, written by Quinta Brunson and directed by Randall Einhorn, opens not during the traditional September start of the school year, but in February — matching the audience timeline and treating them to the show’s first time jump. In February, Janine (Brunson) is working for the school district and barely speaking to Gregory (Tyler James Williams), which instantly invokes major intrigue.

“Abbott Elementary” creator/star Quinta Brunson and fellow exec producers Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Randall Einhorn, as well as producer Scott Sites, have launched a strike fund to help support the Emmy-winning comedy show’s crew.
The producers and some of the cast of “Abbott” created the fund to supplement the Entertainment Community Fund, which has been working to provide financial assistance for industry workers amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While Brunson and the producers have individually donated to the Ecf, they also wanted to find a way to specifically aid their show’s 152-person crew, so they pooled their resources as an additional safeguard.
News of the fund comes as the writers strike drags closer to the five-month mark, while the actors began their strike in mid-July. Variety also learned that Brunson — who won an Emmy for writing the show’s pilot and stars...

“Abbott Elementary” is back in the Emmy race again with its sophomore season after achieving multiple awards successes at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In its first Emmy outing, the show was a threat to win Best Comedy Series, having picked up writing and casting awards, along with a Best Supporting Actress victory for Sheryl Lee Ralph. This year it added to its tally with an additional nomination, garnering eight against last year’s seven, and all notably for a full network season of 22 episodes. Read on for a closer look at “Abbott Elementary’s” eight Emmy nominations.

“Abbott Elementary” garnered a lot of comparisons to “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation” when it debuted in 2021, and for a good reason. The Quinta Brunson-created ABC comedy utilizes the workplace mockumentary format that made those shows stand out, and more specifically, it shares with them a key creative: director and producer Randall Einhorn. But when it came to developing “Abbott,” Einhorn felt that the device needed some updating.
“We wanted the teachers to appear favorably, because they’re doing a thankless task for very little money,” Einhorn says, noting the contrast with Steve Carell’s Michael Scott, whose incompetence anchors the American version of “The Office.” “We wanted them to look like heroes. That’s why this looks different than ‘The Office,’ which comes with low ceilings and floor lights. It’s like a place where you serve time, whereas I really wanted ‘Abbott’ to feel warm and inviting,...

On day one, we all felt it. We all felt something really special here,” says Abbott Elementary executive producer and director Randall Einhorn of the ABC sitcom. In its first year, the freshman series won two Emmys for creator-showrunner Quinta Brunson and supporting actress Sheryl Lee Ralph (respectively, they were the second Black women to win in their categories: best writing for a comedy and best supporting actress in a comedy). The second season has earned the show five more Emmy noms, for best comedy series, actress (Brunson), supporting actress (Janelle James and Ralph) and guest actress (Taraji P. Henson).

ABC is passing on its pilots.
The network has passed on Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
ABC Signature is, however, planning to shop The Hurt Unit to other networks and platforms, while 20th Television will be shopping Public Defenders and Judgement.
The move comes as it still has decisions to make on series Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, which was a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
Last month, ABC handed a series order to Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson. The project, which is based on the popular French detective series Hip, was the clear front-runner all development season.

Onscreen, Tyler James Williams is used to getting his hands dirty as Abbott Elementary‘s Eddie, the first-grade teacher who embraces his green thumb. Offscreen, the Emmy-winning actor is “imitating art” and partnering with Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day to launch its Lots of Compassion program on National Garden Day (April 14).
Part of Williams’ new role? Helping to grow vacant lots in underserved communities into blooming gardens. He began by digging into Third Street Elementary’s soil and — in the words of Gregory in season two — “experiencing what they call ‘Black boy joy'” through gardening. The home cleaning products company is teaming with Kids Gardening to identify local community leaders to receive $20,000 grants towards transforming vacant lots into green spaces.

The Office cameramen had a tough job. Since the show was presumably a documentary about Dunder Mifflin, they had to film every episode like a documentary. That got cramped in the real office and even the soundstage they built, and sometimes camera operators risked injury. But, the camera became a character on the show and was even directed as such.

It wasn’t easy to make The Office look as seamless as it did. The premise was that a documentary crew was filming the staff of Dunder Mifflin. NBC actually hired professional TV cameramen, but they simulated the look of a documentary. That led to some complicated maneuvering to keep each other out of the shot.

The reason you never saw another camera on ‘The Office’
The Office was a fake documentary but they never wanted to see the camera. The premise suggests that only one camera crew was capturing Dunder Mifflin at a time. Television necessarily requires multiple cameras, but they didn’t want it to look like a studio shoot.

Thanks to The Office, Jenna Fischer will always be Pam to fans. Fischer did imbue Pam with some of her own qualities, and creator Greg Daniels even listened to some of her stories from day jobs for inspiration. But, Fischer has two major differences from Pam.

Jenna Fischer’s first big difference from Pam has to do with Jim
Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam were the big love affair of The Office, all due respect to Michael (Steve Carell) and Holly (Amy Ryan). The Office extended the will they/won’t they, but Fischer would have made no such concessions in real life.

The Office paved the way for many shows to employ the documentary style to comedy. Parks and Recreation used it in the local political milieu. Modern Family used it to bring new dynamics to the sitcom. Abbott Elementary still uses it in the teacher comedy. The Office cinematographer Randall Einhorn was instrumental in developing that style, which could be easy to take for granted on the show.

The Office is a comedy, but filming it sounds as intense as action-packed shows like 24 or NCIS. Randall Einhorn was a cinematographer on the first six seasons of The Office. Additionally, Public Defenders, created by Eddie Quintana, has tapped Liz Astrof as showrunner and Randall Einhorn as director. Both will also serve as executive producers along with Quintana (Acapulco), Anderson, E. Brian Dobbins, and Wonderland Sound and Vision’s McG, Mary Viola and Corey Marsh.

Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for…well, a lot of things. But mainly for “Abbott Elementary” Season 2.
Is there anything as satisfying as the inevitable kiss in a slow-burn TV romance? It’s a tough feeling to beat, based on the trope’s popularity from the days of Sam and Diane on “Cheers” up until more recent television comedies (spoilers ahead). Watching two characters kiss after episodes or years of romantic and sexual tension feels like cause for celebration — even if their storylines are so tangled that they may not find that coveted happy ending just yet.
“Abbott Elementary” joined the list this week (finally) with “Teacher Conference,” the 16th episode of Season 2, written by Quinta Brunson. The episode features a much-anticipated kiss between Janine and Gregory that delighted viewers and will undoubtedly complicate its characters’ lives, like all great TV kisses do.

This post contains spoilers for season 3 of "Harley Quinn."
Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker are two of the key creative voices behind two of my favorite shows on TV right now, "Abbott Elementary" and "Harley Quinn." At first glance, those projects may seem like polar opposites of each another: One is an incredibly charming network sitcom, and the other is an ultra-violent, R-rated animated series set in the world of DC Comics. But the primary element they share (aside from a terrific sense of humor) is a palpable care for its characters; the writer-producer-showrunners make sure to give everyone relatable emotional stakes, even if they're sometimes operating in a heightened comedic environment.
This week, I had the pleasure of having a long discussion with Halpern and Schumacker about both shows. We spoke about the newly released "Harley Quinn" Valentine's Day special, the "will they, won't they" story arc between Janine and Gregory on "Abbott,...

The Office paved the way for many other “documentary style” TV comedies. It was based on the British format, and shows like Trailer Park Boys predate the American Office too. But, the success of The Office meant shows like Parks and Recreation or Modern Family could get away with it on broadcast. The creators of the American The Office said they were inspired by reality TV.

Ben Silverman and Greg Daniels were on a Television Critics Association panel in 2005 for The Office. They shared what the comedy got from reality TV. People still binge The Office on Peacock thanks to jokes like these.
‘The Office’ was more reality TV than sitcom
The premise of The Office was that a documentary crew was making a film about the employees of Dunder Mifflin.

If broadcast Pilot Season is any indicator, the Peak TV numbers are in for a rude awakening.
A decade ago, ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC collectively ordered an eye-popping 98 comedies and dramas during Pilot Season 2013. That figure, the most since THR began tracking overall volume in 2012, is now considered a relic of the past.
With the Covid-19 pandemic effectively wiping out Pilot Season 2020, the networks were forced to lean into the year-round programming strategy many had discussed but hadn’t really executed. Now, the shift is in full swing as the overall volume of pilots ordered across the five networks is likely to hit another low after they collectively picked up 35 comedies and dramas last season.
What’s more, the economic downturn has also prompted broadcasters to be more selective in how many scripts they buy and which among those will actually get made. Network executives — including new presidents at CBS,...

The "Abbott Elementary" cast is still checking things off their list of accomplishments amid a very successful award season. The modern TV landscape is not an easy environment for a network sitcom to thrive, but week after week, Quinta Brunson's "Abbott Elementary" continues to amaze. When the series debuted its second season this past fall, the ratings for the fan-favorite comedy soared, making the premiere ABC's highest-rated comedy telecast in three years (since the "Modern Family" finale). Even now, 12 episodes into its run, the sophomore season is averaging around 9.1 million viewers per episode, when you factor in cross-platform viewing. The numbers speak for themselves: people just can't get enough of Willard R. Abbott Elementary and its dedicated staff of teachers.
The series follows the day-to-day lives of elementary school teachers at a Philadelphia public school, where missing Halloween candy can shift the balance of power and a TikTok desk jumping craze can transform a classroom into an accident waiting to happen. Everything’s coming up “Abbott.” Just one day after the ABC series cleaned up at the Golden Globes, “Abbott Elementary” has been renewed for a third season, the channel announced Wednesday out of its Television Critics Association winter press conference.
Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, the sitcom has proven to be the rare word-of-mouth hit on broadcast television since it first debuted in December 2021. In its second season, “Abbott Elementary” is ABC’s No. 1 series. It is also critical beloved.
At the 2022 Emmys, Brunson won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Sheryl Lee Ralph won for Best Supporting Actress; “Abbott” had seven nominations that night. And on Tuesday night, the show won three Golden Globes, more than any other series, with Brunson taking home Best Comedy Series Actress, Tyler James Williams winning Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a TV Series, and the show on a whole winning Best Comedy Series.

“Abbott Elementary” is on a roll. After picking up three trophies at the Golden Globes on Tuesday — including best TV comedy — the series has officially been renewed for its third season at ABC. The news was announced by Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, at the Television Critics Association’s Winter 2023 press tour on Wednesday.
Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, “Abbott Elementary” takes place in a Philadelphia public school and focuses on a group of educators — with different levels of experience and optimism, but all with the determination to help their students. Brunson plays eager but naive second grade teacher Janine Teagues, and the cast also includes Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill and William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson.

The 75th annual Directors Guild of America Awards will announce nominations for the television categories Tuesday, January 10. Voting opened December 9 and runs through Friday, January 6. Awards will be given out Saturday, February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. For more on the film ceremony, head to IndieWire’s Awards Calendar.
The Directors Guild Awards tend to have some interesting quirks, especially when it comes to the TV and Documentary categories. Just last year, the organization filled its Drama Series category full of “Succession” episodes, proving when directors love a show, they really love it. Though the list of Documentary nominees often has crossover with the Oscars, last year was also an example of how TV-specific projects like Raoul Peck’s HBO docuseries “Exterminate All the Brutes” can break in too.

Like most sitcoms, "The Office'' changed over the course of its run. For one, the cast was always changing, with additions like Ed Helms, Rashida Jones, and Ellie Kemper helping to keep the show fresh, and the eventual loss of Steve Carell proving a big blow to the series. The show's quality also experienced a slow but steady decline, with a steeper drop after Carell's departure following the show's seventh season, though the final season saw a decent uptick for a solid conclusion.
These kind of developments are also natural for a sitcom as part of the life cycle of television. But the show experienced another common symptom for an aging sitcom: it got much goofier. Comedies like "Seinfeld" and "Scrubs" can relate. As shows go on, you become more willing to get a bit more surreal and take more comedic risks than you would have early on.

All appears to be well between Jimmy Kimmel and “Abbott Elementary” creator, star and Emmy winner Quinta Brunson.
Brunson, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Writing on Monday, appeared as a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Wednesday, where Kimmel apologized for upstaging her historic Emmys win and expressed his admiration and support. But before that, he also let her crash his monologue to deliver the acceptance speech she’d wanted to give — a bit that mirrored the joke critics said disrespected Brunson’s win.
You can watch that apology in the clip above, and further down the page you can watch Bruson’s appearance in the monologue; we’ll hit you with the transcripts for both momentarily.
For those who need a brief catch-up, what happened on Monday at the Emmys is that the presentation of the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series was preceded by a bit where the presenter,...
