Award-winning filmmaker and show-runner, Janice Engel has applied her diversified talents to create numerous documentaries, non-fiction television series and specials for major media companies in the United States.
Her feature-length documentary, Raise Hell: The Life & Times of Molly Ivins had its world-premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, won the Audience Award at SXSW and numerous other festival awards. Released by Magnolia Pictures in 2019, Raise Hell stayed in theaters for a spectacular 18 week run from Alabama to Alaska! In 2020, it jumped the pond to premiere in the UK and Ireland. Streaming on Hulu from 2019 to 2022, HBO-Max for just picked it up to stream for the next several years. Certified fresh at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, Janice recently made the 213 Best Movies Directed by Women in the 21st Century to commemorate Women's History month in 2022.
Janice co-created What We Carry, an ongoing multi-media series dedicated to preserving Holocaust survivors' stories. Premiered at The Simon Wiesenthal Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, it was presented at the 2014 International Conference in Holocaust Education at Yad Vashem in Israel where it is housed in its permanent collection.
Janice is a Professor at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She has served on the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation Board and is a member of the International Documentary Association and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
