Daphne, Glory also scoop prizes.
Francis Lee’s God’s Own Country has won the top prize at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The well-received drama, which premiered in Sundance and had its UK premiere in Edinburgh, took the Michael Powell Award for best British feature film.
The prize was awarded by a jury consisting of composer David Arnold, International Film Festival Rotterdam artistic director Bero Beyer, and Bafta-nominated film and television writer Andrea Gibb.
The jury commented: “We present the Michael Powell Award to God’s Own Country, directed by Francis Lee, a film with a singularity of storytelling and consistency of vision. Assured direction with raw and endearing performances result in a film that has an authenticity that is both tender and brutal, a juxtaposition of landscape and emotion, which explores the question of what it means to be a man.”

The ninth edition of the Dallas International Film Festival is well underway here in Texas, and I'm pleased to report that it continues to provide a much-needed boost to the local film culture. I moved to the city in 2006, about a year before the inaguaral edition of the fest, and then served as a volunteer screener and note-writer for a little while, where I got to know James Faust, now Artistic Director, and Sarah Harris, now senior programmer. Their continued presence ensures a consistent flavor to the program, which is off-beat and unique, to say the least, reflecting their own personal tastes, as well as seeking to provide something that is not present in other festivals in town or at theaters that screen independent...

The mid-1980s and early 1990s were a big time for the film industry in Dallas, TX. I would say it was the most prosperous in the city’s history. The Studios at Las Colinas were booming with business from movie productions like Silkwood, Talk Radio, and more.
One of the biggest and most celebrated films to come out of the Dallas area during this period was Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop.
The Dallas International Film Festival (Diff) used their 2012 event as the perfect time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of RoboCop. The celebration took place at the historic Texas Theatre where police caught Lee Harvey Oswald after the JFK shooting. The establishment now features some first run screenings but focuses on independent projects, special events, and revivals of old movies.
A red carpet walk by members of the cast and crew of the movie kicked off the event.

The Dallas International Film Festival is mere days away, and I've been slacking in my duty to inform you all of the great films playing here in my city. Several of the films I've had the opportunity to see either at other film festivals or via festival screeners, and I'll be telling you about my picks tomorrow. However, first, I asked Dallas Iff artistic director and all-around super guy James Faust for a few selection that he thought would appeal to the Twitch crowd. At first he avoided the question with the classic, "I love them all" excuse, but after a wee bit of badgering, I was able to get a small list of must-see films out of him, and here they are:BindlestiffsThree underage, virgin,...

The Dallas International Film Festival will honor costume designer Bernie Pollack and actress Gabourey Sidibe at their annual awards dinner in April. Pollack will receive the Dallas Star Award to recognize 40 years working in the industry on films such as "Rain Man," "Indecent Proposal," "Tootsie" and creating the look of characters like Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones. “Bernie Pollack is a film industry veteran and a superstar in his field of costume design," said James Faust, artistic director of the Dallas Film Society. "His work has helped create and instantly recognize some of the greatest characters in film, and that is nothing short of pure artistry." Sidibe will receive the Dallas Shining Star award to acknowledge her impact in the four years since she was cast in her role in "Precious." “Meeting Gabourey Sidibe in 2008 was one of my favorite moments of my career to date,” said...
