Searchlight Pictures dropped a full-length trailer for Kinds of Kindness Wednesday, and as is to be expected from a Yorgos Lanthimos project at this point, the film looks funny, unsettling, and above all else, strange.
Soundtracked to the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” much like the teaser from earlier this year, the new clip doesn’t give much away for what the movie’s actually about, but it does set the table for the uncomfortable vibes that Lanthimos will likely serve up in his “triptych fable.”

Certainly the grossest, most way-out-there, and dare-you-to-lose-your-dinner film to debut in the Cannes competition so far, Coralie Fargeat’s “Revenge” follow-up “The Substance” premiered in the Palais Sunday night after a morning press screening that saw plenty of expected walkouts. Surely the same volume of repulsed exiters carried over to the premiere public screening, where Greta Gerwig’s jury got their first glimpse of the otherwise since-secretive film whose synopses and press notes tell you little. Mubi has distribution rights, which the company purchased just before the festival started. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich calls it an “instant classic.”

After scoring a $15 million opening weekend at the box office, fans no longer have to head to the theater to see why everyone’s talking about director Luca Guadagnino’s steamy, critically acclaimed film Challengers. Starring Zendaya (who also co-produced the film), Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist in a tennis-fueled love triangle, the movie has landed online and is now available to watch on Prime Video and Apple TV.

It really does seem like legendary Australian filmmaker George Miller cannot miss his major projects. It really does. The visionary is the one who provided us with the Mad Max franchise, a cult classic series that initially starred Mel Gibson in the titular role before he was replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road. The latter is also known for introducing Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron, a character so popular that Miller decided to make a prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which premieres globally next week but has had its Cannes premiere only recently. Anya Taylor-Joy leads the movie, and based on the reaction at Cannes, Miller will have another major hit!
Furiosa is set to be released in theaters on May 23, 2024, which is next week, but the Cannes premiere came this week in Cannes, where it was screened as an out-of-competition feature, and the reactions were great!

The long-awaited Cannes premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project Megalopolis has finally happened and while the audience at Cannes seemingly loved the movie, the critics are… well… polarized, to say the least. We have already seen some mixed reviews not long after the secret buyers’ screening, which did not go as planned for Coppola, and while the filmmaker has put a lot of effort into the marketing campaign, Cannes was the next important stop for the movie, which is still looking for a distributor. The movie is expected to get a limited theatrical release this year ahead of the awards season, but based on the early reactions, Megalopolis might not be as grand as the story behind it suggests.
Megalopolis is an interesting story altogether. The movie was conceived way back in 1979, while Coppola was filming Apocalypse Now, one of the greatest war movies ever made and it...

After months of speculation, the critical book has finally been opened on Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis. The early word? Predominantly positive, with some very high highs and inevitably a few low lows.
Below, we run through some of the first reactions.
Deadline’s Damon Wise praised the movie, calling it a “mad modern masterwork that reinvents the possibilities of cinema”. He said the film is “something of a mess; unruly, exaggerated and drawn to pretension like a moth to a flame. It is also, however, a pretty stunning achievement, the work of a master artist who has taken to Imax like Caravaggio to canvas. It is a true modern masterwork of the kind that outrages with its sheer audacity.”
He continued: “Halfway through, there’s a very audacious gimmick that tears down the fourth wall in ways younger filmmakers can only dream of. Coppola breaks many of the cardinal...

What if Ilana from “Broad City” was pregnant?
If you want to find out, watch the trailer for “Babes,” which Neon released on Thursday.
In the comedy film, which Ilana Glazer wrote with Josh Rabinowitz, the “Broad City” alum plays Eden, a proudly single, thirtysomething New Yorker who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and decides to keep the baby. She relies on her best friend Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two, for help. It’s going to be a very challenging process, and not even Dawn is sure Eden will be able to pull it off. The humor seems like a more grown-up version of the chaotic whimsy Glazer brought to “Broad City,” her beloved Comedy Central sitcom.
“Babes” is directed by “Better Things” creator Pamela Adlon in her feature directorial debut. The cast also includes Hasan Minhaj, John Carroll Lynch, Stephan James, Oliver Platt, the Lucas brothers,...

Some years many of the acting categories at the Oscars are unpredictable, like last year when Best Supporting Actress could’ve gone to Angela Bassett, Kerry Condon or Jamie Lee Curtis. This year, three of the four acting categories already seem locked up: Best Actor for Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Best Supporting Actress for Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”). Thankfully, however, we do have suspense in Best Actress, with the final prize going to either Emma Stone for “Poor Things” or Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Here are the five reasons why I think Stone will still win on Oscar night …
1.The film and her performance have been critical favorites since August.

Ziggy Marley spoke about the disparate box office success and lukewarm critical reviews of the Bob Marley: One Love biopic in an interview on Thursday, likening the project to the critical consensus around his late father’s legendary album Exodus.

There are plenty of reasons to love "The Twilight Zone," but a fun one is the way it lets us see so many famous actors before they became household names. Before Carol Burnett had her own variety show, she starred in the 1962 episode "Cavender is Coming." Before Leonard Nimoy got to be in "Star Trek," he was a throwaway soldier in the 1961 episode "A Quality of Mercy." Then there's Elizabeth Montgomery, best known for her role in the 1960s sitcom "Bewitched." Before she played the good witch Samantha Stephens, however, she played a stoic, unnamed woman in the season 3 premiere of "The Twilight Zone."
The 1961 episode is called "Two," and it starts off with Montgomery's character wandering through an abandoned war-torn town. It's been years since the war ended, resulting in total destruction on both sides. When she meets a mysterious man with the opposing army's uniform (Charles Bronson...

Oppenheimer. The critical debates surrounding Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s sprawling portrait of the “father of the atomic bomb,” offer a fascinating window into an industry reckoning with the fate of its most elusive creature: the summer blockbuster. Along with its better half in the joint entity now known as “Barbenheimer,” the film has been burdened with the responsibility of saving motion pictures from financial apocalypse and existential crises. Financially, its impact has been staggering: in July 2023 alone—the second-best month ever in the history of US box office returns, per Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro—“Barbenheimer” racked up a combined $547.8 million; Greta Gerwig’s Barbie netted the month’s highest gross of $366.4 million, and Nolan’s epic followed at $181.4 million. But the portmanteau has only blurred the crucial differences between the two, not to mention the many ways in which Nolan’s latest both indulges and subverts the vernaculars of big studio tentpoles.

Ari Aster’s latest anxiety-inducer “Beau Is Afraid” is taking the independent box office by storm.
The A24 film, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as an apprehensive man who endures a lot over the course of three hours, grossed $320,396 on four screens in New York and Los Angeles. Those ticket sales translate to a sizable $80,099 per location, the biggest screen average of the year. It’s also the second-best per-screen-average for A24 after the Adam Sandler crime film “Uncut Gems.”
Now, “Beau Is Afraid” needs to sustain momentum as it expands nationwide next weekend. That’s been a struggle for plenty of indies in post-pandemic times, although A24 has managed to propel films like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Whale” to box office success. But “Tár,” “Triangle of Sadness” and other acclaimed arthouse films weren’t as successful in parlaying their huge screen averages — which is the key metric...

Ari Aster’s first two films, 2018’s “Hereditary” and 2019’s “Midsommar,” cultivated the young director enough cachet for A24 to hand him a blank check for “Beau is Afraid,” his “Jewish ‘Lord of the Rings’” about the psychological horror of visiting your mother. The three-hour horror-comedy epic is the indie studio’s most expensive movie to date. Starring Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix as the stunted and anxiety-ridden Beau of the title, the movie defies easy categorization and is, expectedly, inspiring awe and disgust in nearly equal measure – often within individual viewers.
Beau lives in an urban hellscape that approximates what “New York City looked like in the mind of Travis Bickle and Bernhard Goetz” and is in a persistent state of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Expect “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to capture the high score at the box office… again.
Despite the release of two new movies — Universal’s wacky Dracula horror-comedy “Renfield” and Sony’s R-rated demonic thriller “The Pope’s Exorcist” — Universal and Illumination’s animated adaptation of the popular Nintendo video game looks to loom large in its second weekend of release.
After its towering $146 million debut, “Mario” is estimated to bring in $58 million to $66 million, a 55-60% decline from its opening. The PG blockbuster, which cost $100 million and brought back the all-important demographic of family audiences, has generated $204.6 million in North America and $375 million globally since opening last Wednesday. It’s already the fourth-highest grossing animated movie in pandemic times, following “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($939 million), “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” ($480 million) and “Sing 2” ($408 million).
Among newcomers, “Renfield” hopes to bring in $10 million from 3,300 theaters in North America.

The latest “Predator” spin-off movie, “Prey,” is hunting down a nomination for Best TV Movie at this year’s Emmys. Given the cinematic filmmaking on display combined with the enthusiastic reviews for the flick, it would have been a strong Oscar contender. That pedigree is why it currently sits in joint second in our odds chart for Best TV Movie alongside “Fire Island.” In top spot is “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” while the other two predicted nominees are “Hocus Pocus 2” and “Jerry and Marge Go Large.” “Prey” has the gravitas and cinematic weight, however, to emerge top of that crowded pack.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, “Prey” follows Amber Midthunder in 1719 as Naru, a warrior of the Comanche Nation who is forced to protect her tribe from one of the very first Predators to ever land on Earth. The film is a tight, taut, practice in tension and features...

“Fire Island” is about to, uh, catch fire at this year’s Emmys. The telefilm, which aired on Hulu last June, is certain to be nominated for Best TV Movie and could well win that top honor. The flick follows a group of Lgbtqia+ friends who head to Fire Island Pines for their annual trip full of sex, fun, and drugs. But when their usual trip is disrupted, they have to make this final trip their best ever. Joel Kim Booster does double duty as both writer and star of this heartfelt film, which he loosely based on “Pride & Prejudice.” Andrew Ahn directs while Margaret Cho, Matt Rogers, Conrad Ricamora, and “Saturday Night Live” star Bowen Yang all costar.
Booster play Noah, who is out just for fun and frolic until he makes a promise to best friend Howie (Yang) that he won’t have sex again until Howie breaks his dry spell.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which sees the return of Paul Rudd’s subatomic superhero, is expected to reinvigorate the sluggish winter box office when the latest Marvel adventure opens in theaters over the weekend.
Disney’s third standalone “Ant-Man” movie is expected to collect 95 million to 100 million in North America over the traditional weekend and 110 through President’s Day on Monday. As the only new nationwide release, it’ll take the No. 1 spot, from “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” with ease.
At the international box office, “Ant-Man 3” is looking to clear at least 160 million — though estimates range from 130 million to as high as 190 million. China, where “Quantumania” is projected to bring in 35 million to 55 million, will be key in the final weekend tally. It’s one of the rare Hollywood movies — and only the second Marvel tentpole since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” — to play in Chinese movie theaters.

Variety and Rolling Stone announced today the final lineup for their Truth Seekers Summit, presented by Showtime Documentary Films, on August 25 in New York.
The summit coincides with the Truth Seekers journal, a collaboration between Variety and Rolling Stone. The special issue features a deep dive from Variety’s Addie Morfoot into the heated debate in the nonfiction community on the question of who — and who shouldn’t — have the right to tell the stories that involve historically marginalized communities. The creators of The Princess, an HBO documentary about Princess Diana that premiered on Saturday, are defending their use of a controversial interview clip that Prince William previously said “holds no legitimacy.”

Last year, Prince William denounced the interview after the BBC found that the journalist had deceived the “people...

One of Nirvana’s weirdest, most whispery songs, complete with musings on the emotions of aquatic life, is a streaming smash nearly 31 years after its release — thanks to its use as a bellwether for Bruce Wayne’s emotions in The Batman. The Nevermind track “Something in the Way,” which was never a single, and never had a video, is trending on TikTok, and is currently Spotify’s second-most popular Nirvana song, right after “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” with streams up 1,200 percent. This week, the song managed to debut in Billboard’s Hot 100, at No.

“And the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature goes to… My Octopus Teacher… to American Factory… to Icarus.”
The Motion Picture Academy has enveloped Netflix nonfiction features with love again and again in recent years, rewarding the streamer with three trophies since 2018, not to mention half a dozen nominations overall.
But the story this year seems less Netflix and more National Geographic.
In a typical year, Netflix might easily boast five contenders. But this time around it’s Nat Geo with a quintet of competitors: Torn, The First Wave, Playing with Sharks, The Rescue—directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin—and Becoming Cousteau, the film about celebrated French marine explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau directed by two-time Oscar nominee Liz Garbus.
“Nat Geo has taken the scene by storm,” Garbus concurs. “The films are really, one and all, so different and so beautiful.”

Jeff Goldblum is an early riser. Every morning he wakes up around five, meditates, rehearses scripts, and plays the piano. By seven, he makes breakfast for his two sons. “I’m making some strides in this period,” he tells entertainment editor David Fear, from his home in Los Angeles. “I’m learning to cut my hair for the first time, as trivial and petty as that is.” He’s also learning to scrub pots and use his dishwasher. “I’ve always been a shirker around kitchen duties,” he acknowledges.

And at this point, our choices seem to be falling into one of three categories: hot-off-the-presses new series; classic, all-time-great shows we all return to again and again; and weird, niche stuff you’ve probably never heard of. Yet it has sparked a flurry of debate on topics ranging from gun violence to toxic masculinity to censorship to the Disney company monopoly. Even...

A rising star in indie film, director Jim Cummings plays a grieving cop whose home life is falling apart in this flawed but evocative debut feature
At the Sundance film festival in January 2016, multitasking force-of-nature Jim Cummings unveiled a brilliantly excruciating short about a bereaved cop struggling to say goodbye to his mother at her funeral. Inspired by his mum’s love of dance and Bruce Springsteen, Cummings’s hapless Officer Jim Arnaud expresses his grief through the medium of movement and song. It’s a jaw-dropping slice of tragicomic despair, a spectacle made all the more toe-curling by being captured in a single unforgiving 12-minute shot. “We have no idea who you are,” said Sundance judge Keegan-Michael Key presenting the grand jury prize for short film to “real discovery” Cummings, “but this film is like a Gesamtkunstwerk, a mini-masterpiece of writing, directing and acting.”

Francis Ford Coppola on How ‘Apocalypse Now’ Was Deemed a Failure — and Nearly Inventing Smartphones
Francis Ford Coppola recently worked cinephiles into a frenzy by saying that, after an eight-year absence from filmmaking, he’d finally begun work on long-planned passion project “Megalopolis,” a film that’s always been dogged by funding issues. That followed his unspooling of “Apocalypse Now: Final Cut” at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, which cut certain scenes from 2001’s extended “Apocalypse Now Redux” while adding back some of the “weirder” elements lost from the 1979 theatrical cut. “Final Cut” will be released on Blu-ray in August.
“Apocalypse Now” — and what it says about how a work of art can shape-shift, in both its own form and in the minds of viewers and critics — was the reason for a wide-ranging new interview with Coppola conducted by Rolling Stone‘s David Fear. Rarely are transformational works well-regarded in their time. Vincent Canby of The New York Times compared The Godfather Part II’s dialogue to “cartoon captions,” and wrote that the movie was “stitched together from leftover parts” — like Frankenstein’s monster. The Fast and the Furious was called “Rebel Without a Cause without a cause” by Rita Kempley of The Washington Post. Rolling Stone’s David Fear claimed Detective Pikachu “is strictly for the fans, in the best and worst possible ways.”
It’s claims like these that seem reasonable, but time proves them wrong,...
