Longtime CAA film agent Risa Gertner is set to retire in January after nearly 30 years with the agency.
Gertner’s list of clients over the years has included such writers, directors and producers as Tony Gilroy, Barry Jenkins, Kenya Barris, Ron Howard and Simon Kinberg. At present she serves on the CAA board and as served as co-head of the agency’s motion picture group for the past 20 years.
“I am profoundly grateful to have worked with artists whose brilliance and creativity has shaped popular culture for decades,” Gertner said. “And to have done so surrounded by the most inspired and passionate colleagues has been a gift.”
Richard Lovett, CAA co-chairman, praised Gertner as having served for years as a “guiding force” for the agency. She has helped grow the agency’s film bench, serving as a mentor to such notable agents as Maha Dakhil, Todd Feldman, Joel Lubin, Dan Rabinow and Ida Ziniti.

The Joker origins film will cover a younger, bullied version of the character...
Last week came the news that a Joker origins movie is in the words at Warner Bros. Martin Scorsese is set to produce the film, with The Hangover director Todd Phillips set to direct. This project is independent of Jared Leto’s take on The Joker, with Leto set for at least two more films as Batman’s most famous nemesis too.
One or two new details about the Joker origins projects have now arrived via a slightly different source too. Former Mma fighter Brendan Schaub has appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, and his agent is Todd Feldman. Feldman also represents Todd Phillips. And Schaub said of the Joker project that “my boy Todd Feldman put this together with Todd Phillips”.

It was recently announced that DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. were developing a Joker origin film with producer Martin Scorsese and director Todd Phillips. I was actually pretty shocked by this news, mostly because of the talent involved with it. For some reason, I never thought I'd see Scorsese involved with a comic book film project like this.
We already know that the movie will feature a different actor in the role other than Jared Leto, and that actor would possibly be younger. According to some new information that has surfaced, we might just be seeing The Joker as a kid.
The following information comes from an unlikely source. That source is Mma Fighter turned actor Brendan Schaub, who is apparently friends with Todd Phillips’ agent Todd Feldman, which is where he got his information. While a guest on the Joe Rogan Experience, Schaub dropped the following bit of info:
"It’s dark.

The verdict is still out on whether or not the DC Extended Universe will have a long and healthy life, but Warner Bros. is taking some interesting steps that an positively affect their properties, should it not. Last week, it was revealed that director Todd Phillips and producer Martin Scorsese were in talks to develop an origin story for the Joker.
Unlike any of the DC films that had hit in recent years, the Joker origin film won’t be a part of the Dceu. This will allow the filmmakers not to be restricted by any of the the preexisting canon, and will give them the room to actually tell the story they want to tell. Considering that Warner Bros. had considered themselves a director-focused studio, this is fantastic news, and could lead to more Dark Knight-caliber DC flicks.
But what would the Joker film actually entail? Obviously, it’s...

Like it or not – and most people seem to be in the latter category – Warner Bros. is pushing ahead with an origin story film for one of the most iconic characters in any medium: The Joker. Coming to us from Martin Scorsese and Todd Phillips, the project’s announcement sent shockwaves through the internet, and rightfully so, but if you ask us, it’s best to just wait and see what the studio actually has planned here before rushing to judgement.
That being said, we can certainly see where the critics are coming from. After all, the character’s history is meant to be vague. The mystery is what appeals to us, since we don’t know much about who he is or where he came from. He could’ve been a friend of Bruce Wayne’s from childhood, or a distant cousin of Commissioner Gordon, or he could’ve...

With the publication of the 2010 Black List another compilation of the year's best unproduced screenplays has arrived. This is the fifth year that The Black List has been in existence, and its purpose is to shine a spotlight on what 290 film executives think are some of the best creative executions of ideas worthy for the big screen.
To be nominated and included on The Black List a screenplay can't have been released in 2010. As well, the minimum number of votes that a screenplay needed to have to warrant inclusion on the list is five. Several of the projects listed on Tbl are in development and will be released in the next twelve months. Others might have heat but take years to reach theaters, and there are also many that will never be greenlighted.

This year's top unproduced screenplays are either political thrillers or are equipped with behind the scene political bantering with Wes Jones' "College Republicans" topping the list. The project which details the early days of Karl Rove, mastermind strategist with gusto for the Republican party already has Shia Labeouf circling the project and Richard Linklater's name as been thrown into the mix as potential directing material. Anonymous Content who held the first place vote-getter in The Beaver a couple of years back, is producing. The Black List started in 2005 when Franklin Leonard was working for Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company. Leonard was getting drowned in sub-par spec scripts, so he sent an e-mail out to his industry contacts looking for the best unproduced scripts out there. The 2005 Black List and the 2006 Black List were undeniably important in getting a fresh batch of writers on the Hollywood scene. Since then, too many people know about the party and the studio system has learned that people are paying attention. That means that increasingly, scripts have been lobbied into the Black List. [Note: I have no actual evidence I would be able to share, disclose or show you that proves this, so file that assertion under: "Things Dave thinks and gets to write because he's squatted on that soapbox long enough to get squatter's rights."]This year: the majority of the Black List Top Ten has already been sold or optioned. I'm not sure how helpful it is to make a list of good In Production scripts. Certainly less helpful to writer's churning out material that keeps getting passed over (or people who have Not starred in Prison Break...

Back in 2004, a list was compiled of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood of that year. This came to be known as The Black List. It was all started by a young executive at Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way, who polled 90+ peers to send him their 10 favorite, new, unproduced screenplays to read over the holidays. It has since become a tradition at the end of every year, in December, to release this list, which is voted on by a group of individuals in the entertainment industry from producer assistants, talent agency individuals, and many people involved with film development all the way up to VP's.
The 2010 Black List is here, and thanks to Deadline we have the list of best unproduced screenplays. Most of the scripts we've heard of, many of them are in production, some have already wrapped filming, they just wont be released until next year.

The Black List has been released. The annual list is compiled with a poll of 300 (up from last year's 250) development executives and high-level assistants, and contains a ranking of the hot screenplays making the rounds in Hollywoodland, which were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2010 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year. Basically, the black list contains the hottest projects in Hollywood that you haven't heard of yet. Note: The headline is a slightly inaccurate, because a lot of these screenplays have already been acquired (six of the top ten listed), a bunch are in production now, and some have even finished production. One of this year's top ten screenplays, J.C. Chandor's Margin Call, about the last 24 hours at now-defunct investment bank Lehman Brothers is already in the can and set to premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival with Chandor at the helm...

Frank Leonard is the most popular man in Hollywood today. This fine December day marks the release of the 6th annual Black List, a ranked collection of the top un-produced screenplays in the town, compiled by Leonard. Last year the top script was The Muppet Man from Christopher Weekes about “the life and times of the late Jim Henson.” Coming in second was Aaron Sorkin‘s The Social Network script, which is a current frontrunner to sweep the Oscars. The year before was The Beaver, now starring Mel Gibson and set for a release in 2011.
The top one this year, College Republicans, has Shia Labeouf and Paul Dano attached. As for the rest of the list, I’ll be seeing Margin Call (pictured above) at Sundance 2011 and Safe House goes into production next year.
