Best TV Movie/Limited Series
Updated: Feb. 24, 2021
Awards Commentary:
This year’s limited series category is an ambitious field, made up of personal tales like “Small Axe” and “Unorthodox,” an addictive mystery in “The Undoing” and a boundary-pushing, honest relationship tale with “Normal People.” But the compelling performance by Anya Taylor-Joy in “The Queen’s Gambit,” which manages to make chess exciting and one young woman’s personal journey combating her demons even more compelling, is the true frontrunner here.
And The Predicted Winner Is: "The Queen's Gambit" (Netflix)–
Executive Producers: William Horberg, Allan Scott, Scott Frank
Synopsis: Beth Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) is an orphan who becomes a chess prodigy, but alcoholism may prevent her from becoming the world champion.

Gareth Evans, the action visionary behind The Raid, co-created TV series Gangs of London for HBO’s Cinemax and Sky Atlantic.
The cult cinema myth of Gareth Evans’s innovative 2011 Indonesian action flick, The Raid: Redemption, is still resonating several years after its release. However, Evans, who tackled the upcoming Netflix horror film, Apostle, and remains in the mix the direct DC's (up-in-the-air) Deathstroke movie, is heeding the call of peak television as the co-creator – with Matt Flannery – of an action series, called Gangs of London.
Gangs of London, a co-production of HBO/Sky with Pulse Films and Sister Pictures and is set for HBO’s Cinemax and Sky Atlantic. It was first reported back in November 2017. Evans initially described the series as “a multicultural world of global crime as it intersects on the streets of London.”

Bloodwork Trailer, Phase One Trailer. Eric Wostenberg‘s Phase One (2011) movie trailer stars Tricia Helfer, Travis Van Winkle, Mircea Monroe, John Bregar, and Joe Pingue. Bloodwork / Phase One‘s plot synopsis: “Best friends Greg and Rob, college roommates, decide to earn a little extra cash by participating in a two-week pharmaceutical test over the Christmas holidays. Locked into a remote hospital facility far out in the isolated countryside, they find themselves part of a bizarre series of tests. But as order and control start to break down, it becomes clear that drugs are having increasingly dangerous side effects, and that no one involved in the test will be safe for long.”
This movie trailer starts out well but begins to drag at certain points. It reminded me of The Experiment (Das Experiment), Guinea Pigs, and a few scenes from Universal Soldier: Regeneration (reviewed here: Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2009) Film Review) where...

I could make any number of jokes here (ie. “Happy Town will be sad”), but I’ll somehow refrain myself from doing so (mostly because they suck). Unfortunately, the new ABC series Happy Town suffered from poor ratings from the beginning – which only happened to be a few weeks ago. Despite a solid cast with actors such as Sam Neill, Steven Webber and Amy Acker, the show premiered to lackluster ratings and they have only declined.
ABC has, therefore, pulled the show from its schedule as a mid-season replacement. An episode will air tonight (Wednesday, May 12) in its regular 10:00 p.m. timeslot and then the show will disappear until June 2, when the remaining four episodes of Happy Town will be burned off on Wednesday nights during the summer.
ABC seems to be searching for that elusive heir to Lost with sci-fi and mystery shows such as FlashForward, V and now Happy Town.
