Fishbone are ringing in their belated 40th anniversary with a new self-titled EP, out May 26th, and the ska legends accompanied the announcement with a new single and collab with Nofx titled “Estranged Fruit.”
The track offers the best of both bands, with Fishbone joined by Nofx’s El Hefe on trumpet in the horn-laden backbone of the arrangement, and Fat Mike backing Angelo Moore’s lead vocals. There’s even some fast-paced pop punk in the track, most noticeably during the race-to-the-finish ending. Fat Mike also handled the production of the song and EP.
“‘Estranged Fruit’ is a timeless composition merging the past and present embodied by the irony of us repeating what should be in the rear view mirror of a so called evolved society that still has far to go,” commented Fishbone’s Chris Dowd, who returned to the band in 2018 after stepping away in 1994 (one of...

The Motion Picture Academy is embroiled in a minor dustup involving the disqualification of one of the five nominees for Best Original Song because of some shady campaigning. The songwriter of “Alone, Yet Not Alone” is fighting back, and most aggravatingly, “Godless Hollywood” is being blamed for unfairly picking on this plucky underdog of a nominee, which is the theme song to an obscure Christian film that has only played in a few theaters. Why, it’s a regular “David vs. Goliath!”
It doesn’t help the songwriter’s case that the song is terrible, and sounds like an outtake from the Sandi Patti box set.
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time The Academy nominated terrible songs and left out more deserving fare. In fact, here are a few Best Original Song nominees from the past that should have been disqualified instantly. Not for any impropriety … but because they suck.

New York — From late-night comedy shows to cable news interviews, free media exposure has proved influential in defining the Republican presidential candidates and setting the dynamics of the primary race, especially for lower-tier hopefuls lacking cash for TV ads.
The turn toward free media, and Twitter, too, may have come at the expense of traditional campaigning. It also raises the chances that a moment of fuzzy thinking or a verbal gaffe will haunt a candidate endlessly in the YouTube world.
"The campaigns are using free media as an amplifier and it's smart, especially for those who don't have much money," American University political communications professor Leonard Steinhorn says. "But there's also a reality show quality to it all, with the kind of visual moments people don't forget."
There have been many such moments.
During one debate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry couldn't remember the third of three agencies he wants to eliminate as president.

There's a brilliant moment in the underrated, relatively obscure film I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, where Keenan Ivory Wayans sees Bernie Casey walking with a band of musicians behind him, and asks him who they are. Casey looks at him like he's an idiot and claims, "They're my theme music. Every hero's got to have some." After the film's big, ridiculous climax, Wayans has bought into it, and walks off with his own band in tow -- the wonderful 90's funk/rock/ska band Fishbone, no less.*
And it's true. Music is a critical part of film, and I don't just mean the score. I love a perfectly placed song in a movie -- there are plenty of movies with good soundtracks, but rarely is the placement of those songs as well thought-out. That's the part that I find myself obsessing over.
Last week, I presented you with a glimpse into that obsession,...
