For many, Kevin Smith is a filmmaker who once upon a time made great movies while others have stuck by his side through thick and thin. With the well-reviewed Clerks III wrapping up the story 30 years in the making, it is time we take a look back at one of the most iconic careers in independent film history and we find out just Wtf Happened to Kevin Smith.
But as always we must begin at the beginning and the beginning began for Kevin Smith on August 2, 1970 in Red Bank, New Jersey. Smith has said that seeing his father struggle with his job working at the post office made him vow to never work a job that he hated, but never really thought there was a future for someone like him in the film industry despite his love for movies. Smith would make friends with people such as future Comic Book...

Nearly 30 years after its cinematic debut, I assure you, the Quick Stop is open once again thanks to "Clerks III." After trying to manifest this project in a number of different ways since the release of the second film in 2006, fan-favorite filmmaker Kevin Smith is finally presenting the third chapter in Dante Hicks and Randal Graves' story in a theater near you. And interestingly enough, this movie brings the New Jersey native all the way back to his first chapter as the characters that kickstarted his career back in the early '90s are now making their own movie about working in a convenience store.
To avoid the real tragedy of showing up at the theater when you're not even supposed to be there today,...

For almost all of us, being stuck in our homes has led to mass amounts of boredom. For those like myself, not being able to go to the movie theater is a huge change from what we’re used to. Luckily, a number of films that came out just before the Coronavirus pandemic broke out have gone quickly to Video On Demand, allowing audiences to still indulge in their offerings. One such title is Impractical Jokers: The Movie, one of my favorite comedies of 2020 so far, and a perfect tonic from all of the world’s stress right now. Film wise, there are few options more determined to put a smile on your face than this one. For those who still don’t know about this team, a quick refresher is in order for you. The Impractical Jokers are Joe Gatto, James Murray, Brian Quinn (Q for short), and Sal Vulcano.

I don’t watch a lot of television. Seeing well over 300 movies a year will do that to you, as you might imagine. However, when I do opt for TV over a film, it’s almost always something silly to just sit back and enjoy. One of the few programs I always make time for is Impractical Jokers, the long running TruTV show that has built up a dedicated following over the years. This week, the four Jokers head to the big screen for Impractical Jokers: The Movie. To honor that, today we’ll be doing a slightly different Spotlight on the Stars piece, opting to highlight, yes, the Impractical Jokers. The Impractical Jokers are, of course, Joe Gatto, James Murray, Brian Quinn (Q for short), and Sal Vulcano. The four have been friends for decades and came to prominence with YouTube videos initially, before getting the show, which has...

Kevin Smith revealed how he recently turned down an offer from Harvey Weinstein to make Dogma 2.
Kevin Smith and the stars of Comic Book Men are practically a New York Comic Con institution at this point. Having appeared during the first day of the con’s festivities every year since its second season, Smith, Walter Flanagan, Mike Zapcic, and the rest of the guys returned yet again for their Comic Book Men Season 7 Nycc panel.
This year, the conversation veered from the new season—which features among other things cameos by the likes of Mike Coulter, Rosario Dawson, and a strangely cuddly The Exorcist doll of Linda Blair—to the longtime Jersey history shared by the men. Yet no Kevin Smith con experience is complete without at least a solitary reference to projects the Clerks director has in the pipeline… and those he turned down. Indeed, during...

Pop culture comes to life in St. Louis next month! It’s the Wizard World Comic Con May 22nd through the 24th at America’s Center downtown (701 Convention Plaza – St. Louis, Mo 63101), and boy oh boy, do they have an amazing line-up of guests!
Sure, you got the comic artists and cosplayers, wrestlers, a St. Louis Ram, a Power Ranger, and of course the ubiquitous Walking Dead stars, but what We Are Movie Geeks is most excited about are the celebrities from movies that will be on hand: Horror legend George Romero, Sharknado legend Tara Reid, horror hostess with the mostest (if you know what I mean) Elvira, Guardians Of The Galaxy tough guy Dave Bautista, Henry the serial killer himself Michael Rooker, Do The Right Thing’s ‘Buggin Out’ Giancarlo Esposito. Lord of the Rings Trilogy’s Pippin Billy Boyd, Captain America squeeze Hayley Atwell, and Silent Bob’s buddy Jay aka Jason Mewes.

While Kevin Smith is rounding up the cast to shoot Mallrats 2 next year, right now he's getting ready to shoot Clerks 3. And coincidentally, this fall will bring a biopic about how the filmmaker launched his career with the original Clerks, an indie hit at Sundance in 1993. Shooting Clerks will feature familiar faces like Smith himself, Jason Mewes, Brian O’Halloran, Scott Mosier, Walter Flanagan and more, but they won't be playing the character's from Smith's film or even themselves. Instead an unknown cast is bringing to life these characters in the story of how Clerks came to be, and a teaser trailer has just arrived. It looks like a student film, but in a charming way, and seems to be something that Smith's fans will enjoy. Watch? Here's the teaser trailer for Christopher Downie's Shooting Clerks from ScreenRant: Shooting Clerks is written and directed by Christopher Downie. The...

Box office is one way a film makes its cash: but what are the others?
I know you’ll have noticed this by now, but it’s definitely called show business for a reason. It’s not show show art, show entertainment or even show exhibitionist impulse. Unless movies make money, the money to make movies would dry up pretty quickly. But where does this money come from?
Actually, that’s an easy one. It comes, almost entirely, from you and me and people like us. The real question should be how does this money get from our back pockets and into the coffers of the big movie studios.
Some of the pathways are incredibly obvious, some perhaps a little less so. Let’s take a look at 16 of the ways that movies make money.
1. Ticket sales
I had just started working in a cinema when Jurassic Park was released.

"Comic Book Men" is taking on one of the greatest debates of all in its upcoming episode: who is the ultimate superhero arch-nemesis?
In the above Zap2it exclusive clip from Season 3 episode 7 "Dukes of Jersey," Kevin Smith and Walt Flanagan argue about whether Green Goblin or Joker is the better villain.
"Green Goblin, of course, is Spider-Man's biggest foe. He's kind of Spider-Man's Joker," Smith says.
Flanagan counters, "I think he's even more heinous than the Joker. I mean, he killed his first love Gwen Stacy, and years later Spider-Man found out that Norman Osborn -- that Green Goblin -- had an affair with a young Gwen Stacy and got her pregnant. That's why I say the Green Goblin trumps what the Joker has been able to do to Batman because, yeah, Joker killed Robin, but at least he didn't impregnate him."

I left my local comics shop this week with a large stack of comics and decided to read Cryptozoic Man #1 first – and it turned out to be the comic I finished last. About halfway through the comic I set it down, utterly frustrated with the amateurish writing and abysmal storytelling, and read every single other comic I had before returning to finish this off, feeling the beginning of a headache coming on as I did. Cryptozoic Man #1 is the worst comic of the week and is definitely a contender for worst comic of the year.

The sixteen half-hour episodes will continue to document the daily banter of the Stash staff and customers as they geek-out over mind-blowing pop culture artifacts and iconic celebrities and personalities from the fanboy world including the Hulk himself, Lou Ferrigno and from the original Star Trek series, Nichelle Nichols (Uhura). Whether it’s about buying and selling memorabilia or embarking on wild adventures away from the store, the men of The Stash share all the juicy details with Kevin through their hilarious podcast, which is woven throughout the series.

On Sunday, Aug. 11, Breaking Bad was an hourlong exercise in sustained tension, culminating in a main-character face-off that’s been building for pretty much the entire run of the show. Fortunately for our collective heart rate, there was also a nice moment of levity, provided by Jesse’s perpetua-stoned best pals Badger and Skinny Pete. The two pals had a Clerks-worthy conversation/analysis about Star Trek which led into Badger’s full-fledged pitch for his own Star Trek teleplay.
Now, Badger’s idea for an Enterprise pie-eating contest lacks the thematic density of other AMC-character metafictional Tos spec scripts,...

“If images don’t do anything in this culture,” I said, plunging on, “if they haven’t done anything, then why are we sitting here in the twilight of the twentieth century talking about them? And if they only do things after we have talked about them, then they aren’t doing them, we are. Therefore, if our criticism aspires to anything beyond soft-science, the efficacy of images must be the cause of criticism, and not its consequence—the subject of criticism and not its object. And this,” I concluded rather grandly, “is why I direct your attention to the language of visual affect—to the rhetoric of how things look—to the iconography of desire—in a word, to beauty!” I made a voilá gesture for punctuation, but to no avail. People were quietly filing out. —Dave Hickey, The Invisible Dragon.

Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes unleashed the first trailer for their new animated adventure Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie! This is what Jay & Silent Bob fans get while we wait for Smith's final film Clerks 3. Maybe some of the more hardcore fans will like what they see in the animated film, but it really kind of just fell flat for me, and did nothing to make me want to see the movie. It just seems like there was a lot of recycled stuff from Mallrats and Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back. But maybe some of you will look past that stuff, and enjoy what you see. Here's the synopsis...

When given the chance, most sane people flee the colder areas of the country in favor of tropical locations in January. However, movie fans turn away from the dreadful selection of films in the marketplace and focus their attention to Park City, Utah, for the Sundance Film Festival. While our elite writers are checking out the many films at Sundance, it’s time for another commentary on a film’s commentary. The choice this week is Kevin Smith’s breakthrough picture Clerks. Clerks wasn’t discovered at Sundance, but it was a breakout hit at the festival in 1994. This week, let’s forget about the Red State auction shenanigans, feuds with Southwest Air, and various Twitter explosions. We can turn back the clock to 1995 when Smith sat down with his cohorts to record the commentary to what is possibly his best-known film. For fans of the film, and Smith’s career, much...

We’ve all seen – and heard- Kevin Smith’s countless Star Wars Universe references throughout his many movies, so it’s no surprise that the bearded former Silent Bob has had a few things to say about the recent Walt Disney- George Lucas – Star Wars love triangle.
In a recent guest editorial for The Hollywood Reporter, Smith penned a touching look at what it was like to be a Star Wars fan the first time around, before they couldn’t be watched whenever we wanted to watch them, before they were available on even VHS.
“Every summer day from 1978 to 1982, you could find me and Pete in his tiny yard, building a new Hoth or Tatooine, brushing ants off our bodies as we laid belly down in the dirt, making Luke Skywalker repeatedly kiss a girl who turned out to be his sister right before they swing from dental floss...

Dean Haspiel strikes me as a creator who’s constantly growing. He’s an artist, he’s a writer, he’s won an Emmy for TV design work, and in the last year he’s started up a new project, Trip City, a “Brooklyn-filtered literary arts salon” with an eclectic mix of comics, stories, realism, sci-fi, and more. Now, don’t get me wrong – I obviously love superhero comics, and the people who create them, but I also love creators who can and do cross genres and try new things. Dean is clearly one of these.
While Dean is perhaps best known for his work with Harvey Pekar (e. g. American Splendor and The Quitter) and for his “last romantic anti-hero” Billy Dogma, his current project that’s caught my attention is Trip City, via the sample booklet Dean shared with me at Baltimore Comic Con. Tony Scott, 1944-2012
News.
The shocking news of Tony Scott's suicide is something we're all still trying to process. I recommend visiting David Hudson's round-up, but rest assured the Notebook is and will be actively involved in commemorating the Hollywood auteur, and doing his great work justice. Coincidentally we've had a project in the works, in which Tony Scott plays no small role. For now, I'll just link this Tumblr which is acting as a lead-up/warm-up to what we'll be doing. In fact, we're open to accepting submissions at Vulgar Auteurism, especially if you've a Tony Scott image you feel like sharing. Sight & Sound unveiled their new poll earlier this month, and while the overall list is worth a look, the greater pleasure is navigating the individual top tens from all the critics who submitted a list, including our own Daniel Kasman and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky.

Namco Bandai are set to end the year with a bang, releasing a whole slew of new games to the eager masses. Comic Book Men owes a lot to The Walking Dead’s popularity now that it was been given a Season 2 renewal, along with the live talk show, Talking Dead, of 16 episodes. For those of you keeping track at home, that’s an increase of 10 episodes from the show’s first season, which only contained 6. But the increase in episode count comes at a price. The show will no longer be an hour long, but will shrink down to a half-hour. So in reality, Comic Book Men is only getting an extra 4 episodes, but that’s still an increase so nobody should be complaining about this news. I know I’m not.

The most interesting moment of the just-completed first season of Kevin Smith's AMC reality series "Comic Book Men" occurred in its second episode. A customer comes into Smith's store, Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, looking to sell some collectibles. He's got a complete set of the classic DC maxi-series "Crisis on Infinite Earths" and a Batman print signed by artist Jim Lee. As Stash manager Walt Flanagan and employee Ming Chen assess the collection, they ask the seller, a man in goatee and ponytail who bears a faint resemblance to a young Kevin Smith, why he wants to part with his prized possessions. "I'm just trying to make a little extra money to get a film camera," he says."Trying to be a film director and an editor. I'm selling off the past to pay for the future." Flanagan chuckles, "That sounds familiar." That familiar story is...
