It’s always so good to see Dann Florek playing Don Cragen again, whether it’s back on Law & Order: Svu or on Organized Crime, and he shows up on the latter in the March 14 episode, the promo reveals. “Something’s going on with Elliot,” he tells Sergeant Ayanna Bell (Danielle Moné Truitt). But where is Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), who, though currently suspended from the NYPD following his actions during a previous case (after Bell was shot on the job), is working a serial killer case with Chief Bonner (Jennifer Ehle) on Long Island? Watch the promo above to see. In this next episode, the squad backs up Stabler in pursuing a murder case outside of their jurisdiction as an unlikely ally provides a key piece of evidence. Plus, Bell works to find a way to get Stabler back on the job. Florek starred as Don Cragen on Svu for 15 seasons,...

Law & Order: Svu was a bit of new territory for hip-hop artist Ice-t. When he first met the cast, he noticeably kept a bit of distance. But little did the rapper know he’d be working with his Law & Order for 25 seasons now.
Ice-t failed to hang out with his ‘Law & Order’ co-stars at first Ice-t, Chris Meloni, Richard Belzer, Diane Neal, Dann Florek, B.D. Wong, Mariska Hargitay | NBC Universal / Getty Images
Ice-t couldn’t have known Law & Order was going to last as long as it has when he was first cast. The actor has always shared that he was originally only supposed to be on the show for four episodes.
“Here it is, we’re starting the 22nd season. I can’t really explain it, man,” Ice-t said not too long ago on Straight Up Steve Austin.
But Ice-t doesn’t mind the show’s longevity.

Law & Order: Svu just hit a major milestone. The police procedural is heading into its 25th season, and the show’s cast decided to celebrate the occasion in style. Mariska Hargitay, Ice-t, and other stars of the NBC drama, past and present, gathered at Edge at Hudson Yards in New York City on Jan. 16 to mark the show’s birthday ahead of the season 25 premiere on Jan. 18.
It’s been a long journey for the special victims unit squad. The show launched in 1999 as a spinoff of Law & Order. Since then, more than 500 episodes have aired, and the show has become the second-longest-running scripted primetime drama after The Simpsons (based on the number of seasons). Let’s take a look at some of the Law & Order: Svu cast, then and now.

Richard Belzer, the beloved comedian who began as an edgy stand-up performer before finding further fame as the cynical but stalwart detective John Munch on Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, has died. He was 78.

When I think of the sitcoms that raised me, I don’t usually think of “Smart Guy,” and for that I am sorry.
“Smart Guy” often gets lost in the pantheon of sitcom lore, eclipsed by decades of long-running predecessors like “Full House,” “Fresh Prince,” and more. Created by Danny Kallis, the series stars Tahj Mowry as T.J. Henderson, a 10-year-old genius who skips from fourth to tenth grade and has to navigate high school with older kids — including his two siblings. It ran from 1997 to 1999 on the WB and aired reruns on the Disney Channel until 2003.
That’s when I and many other young millennials found the exceptional series. “Smart Guy” became the foundation of my sitcom education in tandem with “Boy Meets World,” a post-school package deal viewing (usually with my dad sharing the couch). In the years that followed, “Boy” moved to ABC Family, but “Smart Guy...

Chung-chung. There are many takes on the spelling of the signature noise that accompanies the jump from scene to scene in an episode of Law & Order. Original series star Dann Florek, for instance, dubbed it the "doink doink." What isn't in dispute is that the unmistakable clanging, which evokes the slamming of a jail cell door, the justice system at work, is recognizable anywhere thanks to the NBC show, which over the course of 21 seasons steadily became part of the soundtrack of our lives, prolific in references and immortal in reruns. Psychologists have delved into it at length, so don't worry, there's nothing weird about the fact that Law & Order—with all the...

Warren Leight is leaving Law & Order: Svu after serving as an executive producer and showrunner on the venerable NBC crime drama for the past three seasons. It was his second stint at the helm of the Wolf Entertainment series.
Leight announced his exit on Twitter Tuesday night, after wrapping production on the current 23rd season of Svu.
“The last two years of show running during a pandemic have been arduous, and I’ve decided to take a break,” Leight wrote on Twitter in a lengthy thread. (You can read it below)
Leight originally joined Svu at the beginning of Season 13 when the drama was at crossroads, having just lost its co-lead Christopher Meloni. He shifted the attention to Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson and successfully rebuilt the show around her, giving it a new life. There could be three Law & Order shows on NBC soon. The original series, which aired its series finale in 2010, is returning for Season 21, according to Wolf Entertainment. It “will continue where the show left off … with the classic format that explores two separate, yet equally important groups: ‘the police who investigate crimes and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.” “There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true,” Dick Wolf said in a statement. “This is mine.” Law & Order Season 21 will be executive produced by Wolf, Rick Eid (who will also serve as showrunner and writer), Arthur Forney, and Peter Jankowski. Further details, including a premiere date and casting, will be announced at a later date. Over its first 20 seasons, its cast included Chris Noth, Dann Florek (who starred on Svu), Jerry Orbach, Sam Waterston, Benjamin Bratt, Jill Hennessy, Angie Harmon, Jesse L. Martin,...

The Law & Order franchise is one of the best-known franchises on television.
Law & Order: Svu stands out as the flagship show in the franchise, airing its 20th season in 2018.
As with any show that airs over a prolonged period, Svu has grown and changed over the years, often for the better. Here's a look at some of the most significant ways the series has evolved.
For many viewers, Olivia Benson Is Svu. The series is shown more or less from her eyes, and she is the caring, super-empathetic detective that many viewers wish existed in real life.
So it makes sense that the most compelling evolution in this long-running series has to do with her character. When Svu premiered in 1999, Olivia was a total newbie whose first lesson was that "we don't pick the vic."
Over the years, she's taken those words to heart and has equal empathy for all victims,...

On September 20, 1999, audiences were invited to explore another side of New York City, where crimes were “especially heinous.” The first spinoff of creator Dick Wolf’s successful Law & Order series, Special Victims Unit introduced viewers to a new team of “dedicated detectives” -- Oliva Benson (Mariska Hargitay), Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), Monique Jeffries (Michelle Hurd) and John Munch (Richard Belzer), led by Capt. Don Cragen (Dann Florek) -- tasked with bringing justice for sexually based crimes.
Their stories quickly became beloved by audiences as the series not only became a ratings hit for NBC, but also earned critical acclaim -- including a historic run of Emmy nominations and wins for its guest stars -- and adoration among the many actors who passed through on their way to stardom.

When Capt. Donald Cragen left the squad room a final time on "Law & Order: Svu," he did so as he had lived in it -- nobly.
That may be a lofty term, but Dann Florek's performance as the captain of the Special Victims Unit was noble, quiet, steady and unwavering.
Wednesday's (Jan. 15) "Svu" marked his 400th episode as the captain. Florek played Cragen in all 331 episodes of this series, now in its 15th season, and in 69 episodes of the original "Law & Order."
There's a lot to be said for the sort of decency that Florek could not keep out of his performance. Florek declined requests to speak about his exit from the series, but had spoken with Zap2it over the years in a series of phone interviews and set visits.
He was one of the originals, going back not just to the mothership of "Law & Order," but to that show's initial pilot.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" said goodbye to one of its originals -- Captain Donald Cragen -- in Wednesday's (Jan. 15) episode, "Amaro's One-Eighty." After 15 seasons of "Law & Order: Svu," plus three seasons on the original "Law & Order," Dann Florek is off the case.
Most of the episode didn't exactly deal with Captain Cragen's departure. Instead, the focus was on Detective Amaro's potential indictment for shooting a teenager in the line of duty. But as soon as the case was done, "Law & Order: Svu" got back to Cragen's goodbye.
"I didn't want to announce this until Nick's situation got resolved. But it's done, and so am I."
With those abrupt words, Cragen let his detectives know he was leaving for good. Instead of chasing down murderers, Cragen and his wife were going on an around-the-world cruise into retirement. Detective Benson was left in charge of the unit.

Longtime Law & Order: Svu castmember Dann Florek had one stipulation when discussing his exit from the series with showrunner Warren Leight.
"Dann said, 'I don't like parties. I don't want a party,'" Leight tells TVGuide.com with a laugh. "But he does have a nice 'farewell to the troops' moment in this episode."
On Wednesday's episode (9/8c, NBC), Capt. Cragen will retire from the force after 15 seasons of Svu and three seasons on the original flagship series — all of which makes him the longest-running character in Law & Order history. "We set this thing in motion where, for the first time ever, he had a hint of a social life," Leight said in reference to...

No matter how overwhelming the evidence and trustworthy the victims, sometimes the bad guys win.
In Wednesday's (Jan. 8) "Law & Order: Svu," Pablo Schreiber returns as serial rapist and murderer William Lewis. He goes to trial and is found guilty on a couple of charges, but really, he wins.
That means Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) loses. The only good thing is the ordeal should be over for Benson.
Given the final scene, when Lewis fakes a seizure and barely represses a smile knowing he has duped yet another woman, this time a physician, there's all too great a chance he'll return too.
If only the Svu detectives shot him when they had the chance, Tutuola (Ice-t) says. Though Capt. Cragen (Dann Florek) gives him a look for saying so, everyone on the squad and those watching must have thought the same.

Some characters are so consistent in a television series that you can’t, even for a second, imagine what that series would be like without them around. This is especially true in long-running shows, such as Law & Order: Svu. Svu is particularly susceptible to this way of (not) thinking because it’s a spinoff of an original property. This means that some of the characters could have, and did, originate in the original Law & Order. Who would’ve thought that Dann Florek, known for playing Captain Donald Cragen since Law & Order, would ever think to leave the show before it came to its natural end?
It might not have been something you’d see coming, but come it has. Florek announced his departure from Svu on Twitter last Friday, saying, “Friday was the last day 4 Cragen/Florek. It was a sweet send off! But he’ll live on in syndication land 4 evah!

After 15 seasons as the boss on "Law & Order: Svu" -- and three seasons before that on the original "L&O" -- Capt. Donald Cragen is retiring.
Dann Florek filmed his final scenes as Cragen on Friday (Dec. 6), capping a run of more than 400 episodes across the "Law & Order" universe. (The character is coming up against the NYPD's mandatory retirement age, the same thing that led to the exit of Richard Belzer's Detective John Munch earlier in the season.)
The gruff, disapproving commander is a stock character in crime shows, but Cragen transcended those tropes over the years and joins a pantheon of truly great cop show boss characters. With due respect to predecessors like Barney Miller and Frank Furillo of "Hill Street Blues," here are our favorites since Cragen first appeared on "Law & Order" in 1990.

After 401 episodes, veteran Law & Order cast member Dann Florek, who played Captain Donald Cragen, is leaving the show.
Law & Order: Svu showrunner Warren Leight tweeted photos from the set of the show featuring the cast celebrating Florek, which also read:
Florek has been with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since it began 15 years ago, and was on Law & Order for three years before that.
His departure from the show comes weeks after series stalwart Richard Belzer retired from the program. According to Leight, neither Florek nor Belzer left the show due to a feud or any disharmony, but because the show is trying to remain authentic and realistic.
The episode featuring Florek's depature has just been shot, and will air sometime in the new season of Law & Order: Svu, which begins January 8 at 9/8c on NBC.

First Munch, now this? Dann Florek is also leaving Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, because his character Captain Cragen has reached the mandatory retirement age for the NYPD and suddenly accuracy really, really matters for some reason. Fifteen years in, a show isn't supposed to be this great.
The first hour of the season opener of NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" Wednesday (Sept. 25) is haunting, terrifying and Emmy-worthy. A second, unrelated episode followed, but it's the first half of the premiere, the conclusion to last season's finale, people will be talking about.
When last season ended, serial rapist William Lewis (Pablo Schreiber) had kidnapped Olivia (Mariska Hargitay) after a crime spree that included raping and torturing an older photographer (Judith Ivey).
Cragen (Dann Florek) ordered Benson to take off two days because she was so furious and frustrated that Lewis kept evading prosecution. Benson followed orders and went home -- where Lewis was waiting for her, gun drawn.
When the season opens, Benson is tied up and has duct tape over her mouth. She's woozy from drugs, and her face is swollen and bloodied. She knows...

When a television show proves to be successful, the broadcasting companies will do anything to milk it for what it truly is worth and then some. However, there are certain television shows that these networks need to let go while they still have a fan base left.
There are many shows that last much longer than they are supposed to because they were once one of the most popular shows on television. Some notable examples include the original Law & Order or western drama Gunsmoke (pictured above).

Fortunately for "Law & Order: Svu" fans, the end of the long-running series isn't in sight yet. NBC recently renewed the drama for a fifteenth season and series star Dann Florek has an idea why the show is still so successful.
"Great storytelling. Great writing. I think we have a terrific cast and great guest stars," Florek told The Huffington Post on the red carpet of NBC's 2013 upfront in mid-May. "It's important subject matter that really needs to be addressed. The fans are very loyal."
Florek has been a part of Dick Wolf's NBC franchise since the beginning. After three seasons on "Law & Order," Florek's Captain Cragen moved over to "Svu," where he's stayed for 14 seasons.
Richard Belzer has also been along for the ride for quite some time, playing Detective Jon Munch for more than 20 years across multiple iterations of "Law & Order" after originating on "Homicide: Life On The Street.
