The story of Stax records has long been smoothed over and sculpted into a neat bundle of Southern aphorism and marketing copy: The Memphis home of “Soul Man” and Shaft and the Staple Singers was the more authentic (insert adjective like “gritty” or “greasy” or “Southern-fried” here), counterpart to the pop-oriented Motown; a rare space of multiracial utopia in a segregated Sixties South; a locus, for Blacks in Memphis at the time, for the expressions and dreams of a better American future that lost its way in 1968 when those dreams...

The National’s Matt Berninger has released a solemn new song, “Let It Be,” which will appear on the upcoming deluxe edition of his 2020 solo album, Serpentine Prison.
As Berninger noted on Twitter, his “Let It Be” is not a cover of the Beatles tune, although he added he wrote it with Mike Brewer, whom he called “the Paul McCartney of southern Ohio.” Berninger’s “Let It Be” is a poignant ballad that grows richer with soft horns, harmonica, and shimmering electric guitars as Berninger sings, “Five o’clock in...

The Monday April 23 episode of the ABC revival of “American Idol” saw the Top 14 reduced to the Top 10. Six of the singers continuing on in the show — Gabby Barrett, Cade Foehner, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Maddie Poppe, Catie Turner and Michael J. Woodard — learnt that they numbered among America’s favorites and earned places in the Top 10 based on their performances on Sunday’s show.
The other eight contestants were told by host Ryan Seacrest that the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — would choose just four of them to move forward in the competition based on the songs that they sung on Monday’s show. The four artists that the panel put through to the Top 10 were: Dennis Lorenzo, Jurnee Siani, Michelle Sussett and Ada Vox.

It took five weeks of episodes on the “American Idol” revival on ABC but we finally have the top 14 who will sing for your votes beginning on April 22. We asked you which of these are the early favorites to win season 16, which is hosted by Ryan Seacrest. Four of the finalists – Gabby Barrett, Cade Foehner, Jurnee and Ada Vox — are the only ones to register double digits in our poll. Each was a clear favorite for at least one of the three judges: Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.
None of the other 10 other artists in the Top 14 — Jonny Brenns, Marcio Donaldson, Caleb Lee Hutchinson, Garrett Jacobs, Mara Justine, Dennis Lorenzo, Maddie Poppe, Michelle Sussett, Catie Turner and Michael J. Woodard — merited more than nine percent of the vote. Are we underestimating one of these talents?

In episodes taped weeks ago, the remaining two dozen artists from the Top 50 were divided into two groups. Each one of these two dozen hopefuls had to perform both solo and in duets with celebrities in front of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. That trio of talent then determined if each contestant deserved a place in the Top 14. The first wave of contestants in the Top 14 were revealed at the end of the April 9 episode of this revival on ABC hosted Ryan Seacrest.

“American Idol” may be on a new network (ABC) but has the same host (Ryan Seacrest) and is following the same format that worked so well for 15 seasons on Fox. I bought it for myself, but this was my Christmas present, arriving in the mail from England on Christmas Eve: a fifteen-cd set containing five epic Springsteen concerts from the legendary Darkness on the Edge of Town tour. When the Cleveland deejay who emceed the show for Wmms-fm introduced the band by saying, "Round for round, pound for pound, there ain’t no finer band around," he wasn't just rhyming, he was telling the truth.
Why, you ask, did this set come from England? Well, it's an unauthorized collection of bootlegs, but in Europe, radio recordings are public domain, so this is actually a legal release.
The word went out through the fan network I ordered it on Amazon U.K. before the release date. Perhaps Bruce doesn't get a penny out of this, but I've seen it suggested that writers' royalties would still have to be paid. Either way,...

Tuesday night saw NBC's new competitive singing show The Voice kick off the elimination rounds in what has been the most Glbt friendly singing show ever seen on U.S. television. While Fox's American Idol only just this season managed to finally include a gay contestant (if only briefly), The Voice's very first season included four out contestants including 20-year-old Tyler Robinson.
Joining Tyler as the show's other out male contestant is 36-year-old Alabama native Nakia Reynoso who had the guts to perform Cee Lo's "Forget You" in front of the singer himself. Fortunately for Nakia, his gamble paid off and Cee Lo selected Nakia to be on his team of singers. Celebrating with Nakia on last week's show was Robert, his partner of nine years who has supported his partner in his musical ambitions. Now it looks like that support is about to pay off.

What should the "American Idol" Top 10 sing for the R&B/Soul week? Make your picks here.
Even though Usher kinda spilled the "Idol" mentoring beans over the weekend, it was officially announced during the Wednesday, March 24 results show that he would be mentoring the Top 10 for R&B/Soul week.
We love that R&B/Soul reaches way back into Motown because some of the non-Michael Lynche singers need some oldies thrown in there.

Singer Wilson Pickett, the soul titan whose gutsy '60s hits earned him the nickname "the Wicked Pickett," died Thursday of a heart attack in Reston, Va. He was 64. Born in Prattville, Ala., Pickett got his start as a gospel singer. He first made his professional mark in Detroit as a member of the Falcons, an R&B group that included Sir Mack Rice -- who would pen Pickett's solo hit "Mustang Sally" -- and future Stax Records star Eddie Floyd. In 1961, Pickett's soaring gospel-styled lead vocal was backed by the distinctive tremelo guitar work of Robert Ward of the Ohio Untouchables on the Falcons' "I Found a Love", which climbed to No. 6 on the R&B chart.
