Exclusive: “Quite a can of worms,” observed a British casting director of a scandal that, until February, was unknown to his profession. The 30-year industry veteran was talking about the practice of agents sending clients fake invitations to record self-tape auditions.
Deadline first exposed the issue in an investigation on Bodhi Talent, a boutique agency based in Manchester. Founder Archie Purnell was accused of copying legitimate self-tape invites and pasting them in emails to clients who had not been called to audition. One actor rumbled the ruse when an audition landed in her inbox 30 minutes after the deadline for submissions had passed.
Twisting open the Bodhi-shaped Russian doll revealed similar concerns about a larger agency: International Artists Management (Iam). The London-based company claims to have 400 clients on its books and is run by Luc Chaudhary, a reported millionaire once engaged to Silent Witness star Emilia Fox.

British actor Laurence Fox has lost a libel case with two men he called pedophiles on social media after they had called the My Son Hunter star a racist.
On Monday, the High Court in the U.K. deemed that Fox had defamed Simon Blake, a former LGBT charity trustee, and Crystal, a drag artist and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, on Twitter/X in October 2020, when he called them pedophiles over an escalating row over Black History Month.
The Guardian reports that the spat on X started, when Fox said he would boycott U.K. grocery store Sainsbury’s for supporting “racial segregation and discrimination” after the company said it would establish safe spaces for Black employees during Black History Month in October 2020. Blake and Crystal, whose real name is Colin Seymour, responded to Fox’s call for a boycott by calling him racist. Fox, in turn, replied...

Why do we find murder mysteries so uniquely relaxing? This is one of the age-old questions about human nature, up there with ‘what is consciousness?’ and ‘why do we keep eating mouldy cheese and fish eggs like it’s a good thing?’ Because, despite the grief and blood and mountains of paperwork that a gruesome murder causes, we simply can’t get enough of curling up on the sofa with a mug of tea and a cosy crime drama to keep us blissfully entertained all the way through to bedtime.
This isn’t a new thing, either: while modern series like Death in Paradise and Shakespeare and Hathaway are the current champions of cosy crime TV, back in the eighties and nineties classics like Murder She Wrote and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates taught us how it’s done. So whether you’re after the latest in the cosy crime genre or some more nostalgic viewing,...

Got something you’d like to ask the Mission: Impossible and Deep Impact actor? Send it our way and we’ll put it to him
There’s aren’t many actors who can put “hand picked by Tom Cruise” on their CV. Scottish actor Dougray Scott was personally cast by Tc to play rogue Impossible Missions Force agent and chief bad guy in 2000’s Mission: Impossible II – famous for that Cruise/Scott motorbike fighting scene. It’s a role that propelled the Twin Town and Deep Impact actor to international fame, even if it did mean he lost the role of Wolverine for 2000’s X-Men (to Hugh Jackman) after filming on MI2 overran. Scott was also apparently in the running to take over Bond in 2006’s Casino Royale, but was pipped to the post by Daniel Craig.
But let’s not worry about all that. This is a safe, happy...

To the casual observer, there’s nothing remarkable about Sylvia. An intelligent, confident woman, Sylvia tends to keep quiet about her formidable linguistic abilities, impressive knowledge of weaponry, and skills as a markswoman.
Questions about her professional life are met with bland answers about an unspectacular career in the Civil Service, which is only very slightly true – because until recently, Sylvia was a high-ranking British spy.
That's the official logline of Acorn TV's Signora Volpe, starring Emilia Fox as Sylvia. We had a chance to chat with her about making the show.

Jamie Bamber will be in the upcoming Acorn TV series, Signora Volpe.
He plays Adam Haines, a special agent and the husband of a former spy, Sylvia Fox (Emilia Fox).
When Sylvia decided to take a new direction with her life, she left behind a man who clearly still loves her, and he's not afraid to show it.
We had the chance to chat with Jamie about Signora Volpe and a whole lot more.
What drew you to Signora Volpe?
Oh, lots of things. Rome and Umbria, in Italy. I'm a massive Italophile. I studied Italian and French college, and I spent a year in Italy as a student. And this all came to pass just as we were coming out of the lockdown here in the UK, about this time last year. So, it was a great opportunity to be allowed to travel if people weren't free to travel.

Charles Condomine (Dan Stevens) is plagued by writer’s block—so much so that his wife Ruth (Isla Fisher) talked her film producer father (Simon Kunz’s Henry Mackintosh) into paying him to adapt his best-selling detective novel debut into a screenplay. The hope is that an easy task without the need for new ideas will get the creative (and sexual) juices flowing again so that they can push their beds together and maybe even cross the Atlantic to Hollywood. No matter how supportive Ruth has been, however, Charles still can’t muster more than an all-caps “Help” upon the page before losing himself to another temper tantrum. If only his muse was by his side: the first Mrs. Condomine (Leslie Mann’s Elvira), who tragically died seven years prior.
C’est la vie, right? They’ll just have to push through instead: Charles banging his head against his typewriter...

"The moon is full and we must harness its power." IFC Films has released a new US trailer for the kooky relationship comedy Blithe Spirit, a big screen adaptation of the classic stage play of the same name. This opens first in the UK this month, then in the US in February. An over-the-top spiritualist medium holds a seance for a writer suffering from writers block but accidentally summons the spirit of his deceased first wife which leads to an increasingly complex love triangle with his current wife of five years. Described as a "riotous reimagining of Noël Coward's classic comedy, about love that just won't die." The delightfully wacky cast includes Dan Stevens, with Judi Dench as Madame Arcati, Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Emilia Fox, Callie Cooke, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Julian Rhind-Tutt, James Fleet, and Simon Kunz. This seems like a whole boat load of ridiculously goofy ghost fun.

HBO Max has picked up streaming rights in the U.S. to BBC One drama “The Trial of Christine Keeler.”
The deal marks the latest sale of the six-part drama for Keshet International, which helped to finance the series with its Ki Content Fund and distributed globally. Endeavor Content handled the show in the U.S.
Produced by Ecosse Films and Great Meadow Productions, the drama brings to life one of the most controversial political sex scandals in the U.K. Known as the “Profumo Affair” of the 1960s, it saw the attempted cover-up of an affair between a British minister (Ben Miles) and model Christine Keeler (Sophie Cookson) that threatened to destroy the government.
The show — which premieres on HBO Max on Dec. 9 — recreates London during this period, though the story is told from Keeler’s perspective. BAFTA winner Amanda Coe (“Black Narcissus”) wrote the series, while Andrea Harkin served as director.

Ben Wheatley has emerged as one of contemporary cinema’s most dynamic genre filmmakers, thanks to projects such as “Kill List,” “Sightseers,” “High Rise,” and “Free Fire,” and now he’s taking on one of the most famous genre stories ever written: Daphne du Maurier’s Gothic classic “Rebecca.” Backed by Netflix, Wheatley’s “Rebecca” is the first major film adaptation of the novel since Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 version starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. Hitchcock’s adaptation won the Oscar for Best Picture. Can Wheatley deliver a retelling of the same caliber? Netflix’s trailer for the new “Rebecca” below gives moviegoers their first look at what Wheatley has hinted is a new take on the material.
Netflix’s official synopsis for “Rebecca” reads: “After a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo with handsome widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), a newly married young woman (Lily James) arrives at Manderley,...

Silent Witness actress Emilia Fox will turn cold-case sleuth for Channel 4 in an unscripted series working titled In The Footsteps of Killers.
Produced by Alaska TV, the production outfit behind History’s Damian Lewis: Spy Wars, the three-part show will feature Fox and criminologist Professor David Wilson re-investigating historic crimes to unearth new evidence.
Alaska plans to shoot In The Footsteps of Killers like a drama, observing UK government guidelines on social distancing and broadcaster production safety protocols.
Fox said: “We will use this platform to raise awareness and hopefully bring new evidence to these true crime cases which have gone under the radar.”
Alaska’s creative director Ian Lamarra added: “I’m excited about this true crime series that looks and feels like crime drama. I’m sure the combination of Emilia and David’s enthusiasm and expertise on and off screen, will bring fans of both genres to the show.

Following the success of The Crown and its very own A Very English Scandal, it’s unsurprising that the BBC has chosen to adapt another important chapter of British history.
The Trial of Christine Keeler revisits the Profumo Scandal of 1961; an event which saw the then Minister for War John Profumo embroiled in an extramarital affair with the eponymous Keeler.
The scandal was seen as a watershed moment for politics and went on to contribute to the downfall of Harold MacMillan’s Conservative government.
As producer Rebecca Ferguson notes, the scandal showed that “men in established positions were suddenly human beings, fallible and prone to bad behaviour.”
However, a key part of the new six-part drama is a change of emphasis. Whereas previous versions of the story have concentrated on Profumo, or the political machinations, this story grounds itself much more in the human impact of the events.
