Indian star Shruti Haasan will headline India-u.K. film co-production “Chennai Story.”
Haasan, who is also a renowned musician, has acting credits across India’s various language film industries and in the U.S. and U.K. In 2023, she was one of the leads in “Salaar,” one of India’s biggest hits of the year, and led British thriller “The Eye.” In 2019, she had a key role in USA series “Treadstone.”
Adapted from Timeri N. Murari’s bestselling 2004 novel “The Arrangements of Love,” “Chennai Story” is a coming-of-age romantic comedy set against the backdrop of Wales and India where Haasan takes on the pivotal role of Anu, a spunky private detective. Four of the top cinematography contenders— “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride,” “The Man in the High Castle” and the “Downton Abbey” finale — play with period in ways that are eye-catching and often unusual.
Cinematographer Nelson Craig (“Homeland”), nominated in the limited series/movie category for the “O.J.” opener (“From the Ashes of Tragedy”) , wanted a naturalistic look that made it contemporary and brought us closer to the players from “The Trial of the Century.” That is why he’s the favorite to win the Emmy.
What Craig had in mind was Michael Mann’s “The Insider”: not stylistically showy because the drama and performances were sufficiently heightened already. In fact, director Ryan Murphy initially wanted to shoot on film for the grain and the period look, but Craig found it too cumbersome shooting four or five cameras (for navigating...

In its sixth and final season set in 1925, “Downton Abbey” was all about change and adaptability, as the aristocratic Crawleys struggle to survive and the future of England is passed to the next generation.
The designers outdid themselves this final season with the Episode 7 set piece at the spectacular Brooklands car race, and the finale showcasing the glorious weddings of Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) and Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael).
“The big event was the motor race, which came about with Mary falling for race car driver Henry [Matthew William Goode],” recalled production designer Donal Woods. “But could we get racing cars from 1925?”
After phoning around for two hours, Woods secured what he needed, including including two Bugattis, an Alpha Romeo and a Bentley worth £3m that won at Les Mans in 1923.
“We had a great time with boys with toys and it was a marvelous day with restored racing cars,...
