Psych fans may already have heard rumblings about a fourth Psych movie. There was a time when USA Network steadily churned out solid, comfort food-style original programming that was generally referred to as its "Blue Sky Era." The shows were light, breezy, and fun. That era ran for about a decade before coming to a close in 2016, and included shows like "Burn Notice," "White Collar," and of course, the show that kicked it all off, "Monk." While the Blue Sky Era may be over, one of its shows has somehow, somewhat miraculously kept chugging along: "Psych."
Even though the series ended in 2014, the cult hit comedy about a fake psychic detective named Shawn Spencer and his best friend and (often unwilling) partner Gus developed such a rabid fanbase that the creative team behind the show has managed to churn out three made-for-tv films, which came out in 2017, 2020, and 2021. This story contains mild spoilers for Psych 2: Lassie Come Home. When Psych ended its run on USA in 2014, it didn't really "end." Creator Steve Franks was already talking about the many movies he planned to make back then, and there was never a sense that the Psych office had closed for good, even as Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez), Gus (Dulé Hill), and Juliet (Maggie Lawson) followed Chief Vick (Kirsten Nelson) to San Francisco while Detective Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) stayed behind in Santa Barbara. There was always talk of continuing the show, and for the fans, it felt like a promise. A when, not an if. Finally, Psych: The Movie was announced in early 2017, with plans for...

The following contains spoilers for Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.
As fun as 2017’s Psych: The Movie was, its 2020 sequel Psych 2: Lassie Come Home will likely supplant it in Psych-Os’ hearts, because it’s got 500% more Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson). But how does it stack up to its predecessor in terms of Psych callbacks and pop culture homages? Using our Spencer powers of observation, we’ve tried to catch every recurring inside joke between Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez) and Gus (Dulé Hill), plus all the episodic-specific bits. It’s a feature-length Hitchcock homage, but it’s also the toughest Easter egg hunt of your life. C’mon, son!
Psych 2: Lassie Come Home Easter Eggs and References
The title is a reference to Lassie Come Home, the 1943 Lassie movie about the beloved dog making her way home from Scotland. A German-language remake came out early in 2020.

The wait is almost over, “Psych” fans. Among the many offerings that will be available when NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, Peacock, launches nationwide Wednesday is “Psych 2: Lassie Come Home,” the long-awaited sequel to “Psych: The Movie.”
Now, seeing as it’s been a while since the first “Psych” film debuted on USA Network in December 2017 — and even longer since the detective dramedy series ended its eight season run in 2014 — we’re willing to bet that even the most die-hard fans don’t remember exactly where we left things with Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill). Well, don’t worry, because we’re here to recap it all for you so that you’re fully prepared for the premiere of “Psych 2: Lassie Come Home” tomorrow.

Psych: The Movie, when it was released in 2017, was clearly a love letter for the avid Psych-Os missing fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday), his platonic life partner Burton Guster (Dulé Hill), and the rest of the Santa Barbara Police Department after the series wrapped in 2014. From a David Bowie-loving villain to a #TeamGrimmie T-shirt, it was the best kind of fan service. Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, then, is undoubtedly a love letter from the cast and crew of Psych to one of their own: actor Timothy Omundson and his grouchy yet heroic alter ego, detective Carlton Lassiter, both undergoing recovery for a stroke. Psych 2, which premieres July 15 on Peacock, is a surprisingly poignant example of art imitating life while still ushering a crew of beloved characters through personal and professional life changes.

The final moments of 2017’s Psych: The Movie are literally explosive: Professional fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and partner-in-crime-solving Burton Guster (Dulé Hill) watch their newly-christened San Francisco-based practice go up in laser-sniper-fire from whoever’s hot on the trail of Shawn’s brother-in-law Ewan O’Hara (John Cena). It might have seemed an obvious setup for an eventual second Psych movie, with the titular duo following in the wake of Ewan’s ex-Black-Ops adventures, but instead creator Steve Franks and Roday (who shares a co-writing credit on both movies) went for a quieter and more emotionally resonant angle in their followup.
It’s all in the title, which will tug at many a Psych-O’s heartstrings: Psych 2: Lassie Come Home. Mere weeks before shooting began on Psych: The Movie, cast member Timothy Omundson suffered a stroke that left him unable to reprise his role from the USA series,...

Psych is officially set for another small screen reunion between James Roday’s Shawn Spencer and Dulé Hill’s Burton Guster for more pseudo-psychic sleuthing, thanks to the official order for a sequel TV movie, which, is now titled Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.
Interestingly, unlike 2017’s Psych: The Movie, the follow-up, as it turns out, will not premiere on the show’s old home of USA Network, with the reveal that it will instead debut on NBCU’s streaming service, Peacock. The move occurs after USA gave the initial greenlight for a second two-hour Psych TV movie back in February of 2019.
While it was originally planned to arrive before the end of 2019, the movie’s Peacock premiere is now tied to the streaming platform’s July 2020 launch. Steve Franks, creator of the original series, returns as director, writer and executive producer for Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.

It’s been six years since “Psych” aired its series finale on USA Network after an eight-season run, but the property is hardly out of cases for its central detective duo.
“Even on the pilot, I was saying we’re going to do five seasons and a movie, and as we got past five seasons we had to just start upping our expectations,” said creator Steve Franks during Atx Television Festival’s virtual reunion panel Sunday. “Then we stopped speculating on the seasons and I added it to six movies. So we got eight seasons, six movies; we’re in two. I think if we start speaking it into existence, it’ll start to happen.”
With a loyal fanbase that’s still clamoring for more shenanigans and a creative team whose bonds only grow stronger with time, there’s still ambitious plans to keep following these characters into the future.

“A Quiet Place” producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are teaming up with “Psych” duo Steve Franks and Chris Henze on a horror comedy at Amazon.
Deadline has reported that Amazon has put in development for ”Mitchcraft,” an “aspirational horror”(their words) series with a relationship-comedy base, where a small town fire marshal inadvertently harnesses supernatural forces and becomes a witch.
It’s an eclectic concept and won’t shy away from ridiculousness — in Franks’ words. It’s also a series that its creators seemed destined to make, given their pedigrees. Franks and Henze executive-produced “Psych” (the former also created the series), a detective comedy about a young crime consultant who makes a career out of pretending to be a psychic. The series, which premiered in 2006, garnered a dedicated following throughout its eight-season run before concluding in 2014. Exclusive: Amazon has put in development Mitchcraft (working title), a hybrid comedy series from the Psych duo of creator/executive producer Steve Franks and executive producer Chris Henze of Thruline, and the Fully Formed Entertainment duo of Brad Fuller and Andrew Form who are behind such hit horror feature franchises as A Quiet Place, The Purge and Ouija.
Mitchcraft is in “a newly-invented sub-genre: Aspirational Horror” and aims to “make scary fun again,” Franks said.
Described as a two-handed relationship comedy with a genre twist, Mitchcraft follows a small town fire marshal who realizes he may have inadvertently harnessed the power of the supernatural and become, for lack of a better term, a witch.
Mitchcraft’s origins can be traced back to the slew of popular horror parodies on Franks’ USA crime dramedy Psych.

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home was originally planned to launch last year but moved from USA Network to forthcoming streaming service Peacock. Lawson told Deadline that it will air this spring after the NBCU platform launches in April.
The film, which is named after Tim Omundson’s Santa Barbara Police Chief Carlton Lassiter, will explore the marriage between Shawn, played by James Roday, and Lawson’s Juliet after the pair’s nupitals at the end of the first movie.
“One of the things I love about this movie, this time around is, I feel that for Shawn and Juliet there’s been eight years of ‘will they, won’t they,’ then it was ‘they will,’ then there was like a little, ‘where are we,...

Psych fans will have to wait a little longer for the second movie sequel. Originally slated to premiere in 2019, the film will not debut until at least spring 2020. That is because the movie is moving from USA Network, home of the original Psych series and Psych: The Movie, to Peacock, NBCU’s upcoming streaming service, which launches in April 2020.
The sequel, fka Psych: The Movie 2, has been given a cheeky new title, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, named after one of the show’s main characters, Santa Barbara Police Chief Carlton Lassiter, played by Tim Omundson.
Moving the film from a linear cable network to a streaming platform makes sense. Movies are one of the hardest business proposition for an ad-supported linear network because they are expensive, difficult to justify a major promotional push because they are one-offs, and they have very limited shelf life. Meanwhile, original movies have been thriving on streaming platforms,...

Psych: The Movie 2 is taking shape with the teasing of two guest stars.
Series vet Timothy Omundson — who for the sequel will fully reprise his role as Police Chief Lassiter (after sitting out nearly all of the first TV-movie as the actor recovered from a stroke) — teased on Twitter that (a barely obscured) Joel McHale will be a “very special guest star” for the follow-up.
Westworld‘s Jimmi Simpson meanwhile tweeted out a video in which he steps off a Psych-branded longboard (covet!) to suggest that he will put in another encore, having played the Mr. Yang-obsessed, dearly departed police psychologist Dr.
