When “Civil War” director Alex Garland first met with sound editor Glenn Freemantle (the Oscar-winning “Gravity”) to discuss his nightmarish vision of the combat zones, he emphasized that the secret was conveying the reality of the loud, chaotic gunfire and explosions within each environment.
Freemantle, though, saved the best for last: the distinctive sound of gunfire hitting concrete and metal during the climactic storming of the nation’s capital by the Western rebel forces.
“That particular battle [shot in an Atlanta car lot] is pretty intense because it’s hitting everything, and there’s no mercy in it,” Freemantle told IndieWire. “The thing that occurred to me was the acoustics would be very unique. You’re in the streets there with all these [blockades]. And it’s all metal and concrete, and you’ve got tanks, machine guns, [grenade] launchers, helicopter guns, other guns from distances, and you have it all around you.” Not to mention SUVs crashing...

In notching A24’s highest-grossing opening weekend to date, Alex Garland’s debate-stirring combat film Civil War has made plenty of noise — both figuratively and literally.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny and Wagner Moura, the project has spurred conversation over its depiction of a small group of journalists witnessing the violently divided U.S. en route to collecting $25.7 million at the domestic box office this weekend. Among the buzziest elements of the film has been its sound design, as Civil War’s use of jarring battle noise, along with the impactful contrast between its onslaught of gunfire and moments of dead silence. It all adds to the chaos and tension.
Civil War supervising sound editor Glenn Freemantle, an Oscar winner for 2013’s Gravity, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he and frequent collaborator Garland were in lockstep in how to best create the film’s dystopian world.

Spoiler Alert: This contains major spoilers for the ending of “Civil War,” now playing in theaters.
“Civil War” production designer Caty Maxey was tasked with building a dystopian America that showed bombed-out buildings and abandoned cars that stretched for miles on the freeway. It was all part of her creative brief for Alex Garland’s latest film.
Garland drops audiences into the middle of “Civil War.” America is no longer united and there are warring factions. At the center of it all are four journalists who travel from New York to Washington, D.C., where the Western Forces of Texas and California are battling the Federal Government. Kirsten Dunst plays Lee, a photojournalist. She is joined by colleagues Joel (Wagner Moura), Jessie (Cailee Spaeny) and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson). When Lee, Joel, and Jessie arrive at a Western Forces base in Charlottesville, another reporter, Anya (Sonoya Mizuno) informs them that...

We’re all still far off from knowing for sure what the most likely 2025 Oscar contenders are. But the ripple effect of the WGA and SAG strikes is a spring film season of buzzy, auteur-driven dramas. This is still true of “Dune: Part Two,” the film that has set the tone of this year’s awards conversation, though with six Oscars already under the Warner Bros. franchise’s belt, its chances at more Academy Awards nominations are all too predictable.
An Oscars wild card is “Civil War,” the latest A24 film from writer-director Alex Garland. While his most recent film with the company, “Men,” underperformed critically and commercially, his first collaboration with A24, “Ex Machina,” netted Garland his sole Oscar nomination, for Best Original Screenplay, and won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

“Bikini Blue” director Jarek Marszewski will direct the 1920s-set euthanasia drama “Iron Ribbon,” for which Los Angeles-based Egyptian actor Mohamed Karim is attached and Tom Hughes (“The English”) is in advanced talks.
The English-language romantic thriller, which is being produced by London-based Daniella Gonella and Jay Michaelson’s Dg Productions, is based on the true story of rising Polish stage star Stanislawa Uminska, who in 1924 killed her cancer-stricken fiancé in Paris upon his request as an act of euthanasia. She then stood trial, but was set free by the French court.
Karim is known across the Middle East as a former host of talent show “The Voice of Arabia” and for roles in popular Ramadan soaps. He is concurrently pursuing a Hollywood career that has led to roles alongside Nicolas Cage in 2019 action movie “A Score to Settle” and with Bruce Willis in “A Day to Die.”

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Eight years ago, writer-director-graphic novelist John Ridley was surfing the Web when he stumbled across a Jimi Hendrix song entitled "Sending My Love to Linda." A single question — "Who is Linda?" — set Ridley loose on a project that had vexed numerous screenwriters and filmmakers before him: crafting a biopic on the legendary guitarist. The result, Jimi: All Is By My Side, covers a brief period in Hendrix's life — 1966-1967, right before he plays the Monterey Pop Festival — and stars OutKast's André 3000 as the late musician.

The morning after the Oscars is always a strange feeling. We've been covering this process in earnest for months, and now it's over. And for the first time ever, I'm pleased to say that I scored a perfect 10 in predicting the winners in the crafts categories! (I went 21/24 overall, missing Best Live Action Short, Best Animated Short and…Best Picture.) To be fair, however, I'm hardly the only person to have gone 10/10 in this respect. In that sense, we had a night without surprises, which is not to say we didn't have stories. The big story in the crafts categories is, of course, "Gravity's" dominance, as it won six of the 10 below-the-line fields, with the obvious (and highly deserved) win in Best Visual Effects being a foreshadowing of things to come in Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score. Visual effects supervisor Tim Webber,...

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

While live-blogging the Oscars you really don't get too much of a chance to take in all the acceptance speeches. I catch a few moments here and there, and I can pretty much tell when the air is being let out of the room as well as those moments where someone is really capturing the moment. What I've put together below are the five speeches where I think the winner really managed to stand-out. I also love the true excitement coupled with the words chosen in these speeches. Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave, especially, seemed to capture the room with her infectious smile as much as Jennifer Lawrence a year before, not to forget her brother, Peter, who photobombed Ellen's Twitter-breaking selfie and is clearly someone very special in Lupita's life and she in his. Historical drama wins three including Best Picture; Gravity leads the pack with seven wins.
12 Years a Slave won the coveted Best Picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards in Los Angeles last night and picked up two more prizes to score the hat-trick.
Brad Pitt, one of the film’s producers, took to the stage along with stars of the drama and said it was “an absolute privilege” to work on the true story of Solomon Northup, before introducing “the indomitable Mr Steve McQueen”.
After thanking his backers, including Pitt’s Plan B and Tessa Ross at Film4, the British director said: “Everyone deserves not just to survive, but to live. This is the most important legacy of Solomon Northup. I dedicate this award to all the people who have endured slavery. And the 21 million people who still suffer slavery today.”

The Oscars honor the best performances on film, but the telecast is all about celebrating the best speeches. Here’s how we called it:
1. Dallas Buyers Club’s Matthew McConaughey, Best Actor
Running over three minutes, the Best Actor acceptance speech was a monument of pure unfiltered McConaughey-ness. He thanked God. He thanked his late father: “I know he’s up there right now, with a big pot of gumbo…he’s probably in his underwear, and he’s got a cold can of Miller Lite, and he’s dancin’.” He went on a very long tangent about how his hero is himself — or rather,...

Overnight, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - AMPAS to its mates - handed out its annual clutch of Oscars. And as it turned out, the event went by the form book, with just one or two little surprises along the way.
The big prizes were split between 12 Years A Slave, Gravity and Dallas Buyers Club, with the former taking Best Picture, but Alfonso Cuaron picking up a gong for his directorial work on Gravity. Dallas Buyers Club picked up the two acting awards - for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto - that it was broadly expected to. After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, “ I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
Yes! Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition. It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own. Steve McQueen, you charge everything you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. Thank you so much for putting me in this position. This has been the joy of my life. 12 Years A Slave took home Best Picture, but it was Gravity that won the most golden statues with seven Oscar wins at the 86th Academy Awards.
Host Ellen DeGeneres had fun with the star-studded audience, ordering pizza and making Brad Pitt give out paper plates to lucky ladies such as Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, who were all very hungry. DeGeneres also made fun of Jennifer Lawrence’s great fall at last year’s Oscars in her opening monologue and likening the entire awards show to The Hunger Games.
The awards went off swiftly, and not without a hitch or two, but technical difficulties aside, DeGeneres delivered a sweet, funny and uncontroversial show. Her best host moment came when she took a selfie mid-show with Streep that turned into a selfie with anyone in the first three rows who was quick enough to run and beat each other into the frame.

Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.

Funny how fast an Oscar season goes by… only last year Argo was being given the Academy Award for Best Picture. The big night is almost here and nothing about this year’s Academy Awards is a sure bet. With so much time between the nominations in January, the various guild awards and the Olympics thrown in, the 6,028 AMPAS voters have had a long time to mull things, and their votes, over.
The winner’s acceptance speeches at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG) and the British Academy Awards (BAFTA) have never been more important as they have during this past month and a half. Voting for the Oscars closed on Tuesday, February 25, at 5 p.m.
Even the avid pundits are in a muddle and would give their eye teeth to see the final tallies. Will hopefuls Leto,...
