The Library of Congress has announced this year’s selection of 25 “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” pieces of recorded music to archive into the National Recording Registry, led by albums from Green Day, The Notorious B.I.G., and Blondie.
In addition to Green Day’s seminal Dookie, The Notorious B.I.G.’s classic debut Ready to Die, and Blondie’s commercial breakthrough Parallel Lines, other albums preserved among “the defining sounds of history” include Abba’s Arrival and The Chicks’ Wide Open Spaces. Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow and The Cars’ self-titled debut also made the list.
Songs include Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s “LA-di-Da-Di,” Perry Como’s “Catch a Falling Star,” Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” and Gene Autry’s “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” See the full list below and take a look at the Library of Congress’ full registry here.

Other than making records, what do Green Day, the Notorious B.I.G., classic crooners Perry Como and Johnny Mathis, Latin music giant Héctor Lavoe, and the late Bill Withers have in common? Not much, until today: Works by all those musicians, and over a dozen more, were announced as the latest additions to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.

There are few people on planet Earth who can rap as fast as J Noa — and even fewer who actually have something to say. On her 2023 debut EP, Autodidactica, the 18-year-old Mc from the 5 de Abril barrio in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, showcased one of the most nimble flows in rap of any language, along with a penchant for strings-laden throwback beats and a modern perspective. Beyond merely precocious, her voice carries the weight of one who’s seen some things and lived to tell about them.

From a young age, Ángela Aguilar always knew that her purpose was to keep traditional música Mexicana alive. It’s a family affair, really: Her grandfather was ranchera hero Antonio Aguilar and her father is the renowned singer Pepe Aguilar.
The 20-year-old singer continues to invigorate traditional sounds as she releases her latest album, Bolero, on Friday. The nine-track project captures the singer giving new life to romantic classics, backed by castanets and the soothing plucks of guitar, on tracks like “Piensa En Mi,” “Somos Novios,” and “Luna Lunera.”

Del Castillo will transform into Vargas, the mythical woman in the red poncho, who boldly rejected the conventions of her time, paving the way for a unique and groundbreaking journey in the landscape of Mexican popular music.
Her internal battle with personal demons, heartbreak, and alcoholism propelled her to become a trailblazer, stepping onto the stage to sing Mexican songs in a jorongo, the traditional Mexican poncho, and pants. With a guitar pressed against her heart, a tequila in hand, and a pistol holstered on her belt, she mesmerized audiences, captivating both men and women alike.

Last month, Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro put out a call to the public, asking people to send ideas for music by Latin artists to submit to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. It’s part of a years-long effort on Castro’s part to get more Latin art preserved within the Library of Congress and to increase Latino representation across media and pop culture.
The National Recording Registry is made up of works considered “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” or that “inform or reflect life in the United States.

There's no doubt that the Mexican music that has come out over the years has been some of the most far-reaching and storied in Latin America, with legends like Vicente Fernandez, Juan Gabriel, and Chavela Vargas all helping to cultivate a distinct legacy. But with her R&b-tinged sound, up-and-coming singer Ilse Adriana Mercado Asencio, better known by her stage name Immasoul, is looking to show the world just how diverse that legacy can be, while championing the blending of Mexican and Caribbean cultures that collide in her hometown of Chetumal.
"Nobody really knows about Chetumal. It's a very unique small town that shares a border with Belize."

It's been a year without Alberto "Juan Gabriel" Aguilera Valadez, and although his void remains, his legacy is stronger than ever. "El Divo de Juarez" was one of a kind and he inspired people with who he was on and off the stage. He was unapologetically himself, and because of that strength alone, he helped so many. His music, just like him, was incredibly unique, astounding and legendary. We were lucky enough to have him, but we know that there will only be one Juan Gabriel. In the morning of August 28, 2016, the world lost Juan Gabriel. He died of natural causes at his home in Santa Monica, California. He was 66. The star was scheduled to perform that Sunday...

Arsenal are tracking Benfica full-back Lorenzo Melgarejo, according to Goal.com.
The Gunners have reportedly enquired about the Paraguayan international, according to his agent Juan Gabriel Appleyard, though the North London outfit face competition from Turkish giants Fenerbahce.
The South American featured in Benfica’s Europa League final defeat to Chelsea last month and is valued at £5 million, and while both Fenerbahce and Arsenal maintain an interest, neither have yet made an official bid for the 22-year old.
Appleyard told Radio Monumental:
“Arsenal and Fenerbahce have enquired about Melgarejo but so far there has been nothing concrete.”
Melgarejo, who operates as a flying wing-back, joined Benfica from Paraguayan side Independiente in 2011 and featured 39 times for the Portuguese side last season, scoring twice and providing five assists.
He has also been capped by his country at senior level after making three appearances at U-20 level.

Puerto Rican Salsa sensation Marc Anthony marked his return to music when he premiered his new song, “Vivir Mi Vida”, at the Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami. Anthony took the stage to a standing ovation for the performance of the title track of his long-awaited, original album. He not only stole the show with an amazing performance, but also stole the limelight during his duet with Tito El Bambino for “¿Porque Les Mientes?”
The question on everyone’s mind that night was “what took so long?” Why did it take nearly 10 years for the Puerto Rican singer to release an album of original songs?
“I needed to miss it,” admitted Anthony to the hosts of NBC’s “Today Show” the day before the awards show. He certainly had plenty of other endeavors to occupy his time to help him miss it.

Well, my time at Best Week Ever is coming to a close. But before I go, here are 37 things I am proud to have done over the last 6 years. Please note that putting this list together has given me life-altering anxiety this week because I can’t believe it’s over! So, presenting The Final Countdown: 37 Things I Did For Best Week Ever: 37. Fell In Love With Knut. Met Him. Then Mourned Him. Our journey with Knut was a deep one. We fell in love with the little scamp from birth, as did the other 1000 billion people living in China and beyond. But, like a little Lindsay Lohan except not quite as pale, the attention got to little Knuty, right around the time he started growing up into a less small, way filthy dirtier full grown polar bear. I was one of the millions to go to Berlin and meet Knut.

When MTV News caught up with the bilingual, aspiring "Idol" champ after Thursday's first elimination episode, we asked Rodriguez about her decision to sing in Spanish and what other songs she wants to do in two languages.
"I decided to sing in Spanish because I am a Latina," she explained. "I want to represent for all my Latinos out there. America is a big melting pot, it's not only English, there are so many languages...

Here’s Alicia Keys at the Essence Music Festival this past weekend having herself a good old-fashioned internet fall, and not breaking from her singing for one millisecond like a true professional. Just makes you wonder – how did we live our lives before videos of celebrities taking minor spills surfaced on a weekly basis? Oh, we lived them well and productively? Yeesh, scary thought. It’s certainly not on the spastic level of Kelsey Grammer or Juan Gabriel, but it’s an honor to even be mentioned in the same breath as those falling legends. (via Dlisted)...
