John Y. Brown Jr., who became Kentucky’s governor after building empires in business and sports, has died. He was 88.
Brown’s family said in a release Tuesday that “every day was an exciting adventure” for the former Democratic governor, who served from 1979 to 1983.
“He was a true Kentucky original who beamed with pride for his home state and its people,” the family said. “He had many prominent accomplishments, but most of all he loved his family with all of his heart, and we in turn loved him with all of our hearts.”
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Brown was a “remarkable leader who was committed to serving the people of Kentucky.”
Brown had been a leading Democratic fundraiser in the 1970s by the time he made his own run for public office. He also acquired an international reputation as a master salesman.

Even though Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be shortened to just one pre-taped hour on TNT and TBS, the special In Memoriam segment will still be a highlight. Since the 2020 event aired on January 19, it will be over 14 months until the one on April 4. That means even more actors, actresses and members of SAG/AFTRA will hopefully be honored than the 40 people in the tribute last year.

Many TV legends and contributors were included for the “In Memoriam” segment on Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony for ABC. But producers are always forced to omit some of the 100+ insiders who died since the last ceremony. Who was left out of the group that was honored?
With dozens of television veterans having died since last year’s mid-September ceremony, people certainly included were these six TV Academy Hall of Fame members:
Diahann Carroll
Leonard Goldberg (executive at 20th Century Fox and ABC; producer of “Charlie’s Angels” and more)
Jim Lehrer (anchor/reporter of “MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour)
Regis Philbin
Carl Reiner
Fred Silverman

President Donald Trump remembered the late Phyllis George today as “a true pioneer for women in television” in his Sunday tweetstorm. George died Friday at age 70.
“Phyllis George was a great person and a true pioneer for women in television. The NFL could not have made a better “pick” when they choose Phyllis to be the first woman to represent them. Also, a wonderful First Lady of Kentucky as the wife of Gov. John Y. Brown….” Beyond that, the Commander-in-Tweet saluted the “Boaters for Trump” flotilla that paraded on the intracoastal waterway near Mar-a-Lago in Florida on Saturday, repeating a previous show of support from earlier in the month. The President also gave a shout-out to a protest march in Albany, N.Y. for reopening the state
We’ll add more communications as they come in. The tweetstorm so far:

Phyllis George, one of the first leading female sports broadcasters, died on Friday due to complications from a blood disorder. She was 70.
George’s career in front of the camera began in 1974 as the co-host of “Candid Camera” on CBS. That same year, she then joined the “NFL Today” team alongside veteran sports braodcasters Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and Jimmy the Greek. With the team, she hosted pre-game discussions and analysis before National Football League games.
She was one of the first women to be a major player in the sports TV world. She also helped cover horse races, like the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
In 1978, George became the host of People magazine’s self-titled entertainment show. She then went on to co-anchor the CBS Morning news and interviewed many noteworthy guests, including former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
George won the Miss America beauty pageant in 1971, and before that she was crowned Miss Texas.

The kid who stayed in pictures dies after a long life worthy of a movie of its own. Robert Evans brought film into a new era.
Robert Evans, actor-turned-producer-turned-Paramount Pictures president, who made films like Chinatown, Marathon Man, Love Story, Rosemary's Baby, The Godfather and The Godfather Part II possible, died Saturday, October 26, according to Variety. He was 89. No cause of death was announced.
Evans' movies were not intended to be blockbusters. He didn't even care if they were commercial. He wanted his films to be original. The Godfather got made because Evans thought Hollywood presented a false depiction of the mob. He had a friend get the rights to Mario Puzo's as-yet-incomplete novel and persuaded Francis Ford Coppola to direct the film. His life was as original as any of the films he was responsible for. Robert Evans, the colorful, Oscar-nominated Chinatown producer and former Paramount Pictures production chief during the late 1960s and ’70s, has died, a source has confirmed to Deadline. He was 89.
Evans began at Paramount in 1967 at age 36, the youngest studio production boss at the time. During his tenure he revitalized 1970s cinema with such blockbusters as The Godfather, The Godfather, Part II and Love Story and as a producer of such classics as Chinatown and Rosemary’s Baby.
Earlier this year Paramount announced that it would dedicate the Robert Evans Screening Room in the Redstone Building on the studio’s lot.
The studio released a statement Monday acknowledging the passing of a signature figure from its storied history: “Hollywood has lost one of its most influential and iconic figures in the inimitable Bob Evans. I interviewed legendary Hollywood producer Robert Evans in 2002 for Venice Magazine, in conjunction with the release of the documentary "The Kid Stays in the Picture," adapted from his iconic autobiography and audiobook. Our chat took place at Woodland, Evans' storied estate in Beverly Hills, in his equally famous screening room, which mysteriously burned down a couple years later. Evans was still physically frail, having recently survived a series of strokes, but his mind, his wit and his charm were sharp as ever, with near total recall for people, places and stories. Many, many stories. Here are a few of them.
It’s a widely-held belief that the years 1967-76 represent the “golden age” of American cinema. Just look at a few of these titles: Rosemary’s Baby,...

Remember when the Miss America Pageant was a major event on the national television candle? The folks at Tlc want it to be that kind of show again.
If you were born anywhere around the late 80s, you probably don't. But, throughout the 50s into the 80s, the annual televised event was more than just entertainment. It was news. And the winner, whether it was Lee Meriweather, Phyllis George or Vanessa Williams, had a shot at becoming a major celebrity.
But now? Name the current Miss America. Quickly. Don't look it up. Name last year's winner. Name any of the last five. Case closed. While it was once a proud contest/variety show, Miss America show is now overshadowed by other "rags to riches" battles like American Idol, America's Got Talent, etc. To get Miss America back on the pop culture map, the show's producers are mixing up the judges...
