We believe it is safe to say that Spring is finally here in North America. Relatively safe. Pretty sure it is safe. Not only will April showers bring May flowers but May also sees the arrival of the new Danish horror flick Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, and the UK horror flick, Stopmotion. Next month also sees the ongoing live watch parties every other Friday night of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. Four Toxic Avenger films are coming to the repertory programming next month. We don't know if Bob Clark's Deathdream and Buddy Giovinazzo's Combat Shock are considered part of the Namsploitation genre but they're two Nam-era horror flicks to keep an eye out for next month. While we still don't know what...

Reminiscent of the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse with its throwback features and faux trailers for non-existent movies, filmmaker and artist Pat Tremblay’s new book Terror in the Ailien Realms: Transdimensional Horror Movie Posters & Their Film Reviews consists of posters for and reviews of movies that have never existed!
An explanation of what this book is all about was provided in a press release (via Variety), “Drawn by the deep nostalgia of roaming video rental stores to find cool movies to watch by judging what its VHS box’s artwork would entice or beguile, filmmaker & artist Pat Tremblay has created a series of horror movie posters with the assistance of AI. He then proposed to talented individuals within the horror movie scene to write imaginary reviews for them. In his latest interview/podcast, host and screenwriter Stuart Wright talks to filmmaker Liam Regan (Banjo aka My Bloody Banjo) about his new film Eating Miss Campbell, which has its World Premiere at Frightfest 2022 later this month. A life-long Troma fan, Regan also picks his Top 5 Troma Films, including:
Bloodsucking Freaks (1976), directed by Joel M Reed “As a cultural artefact, and as an example of the worst uses of creative energy, however, Bloodsucking Freaks is a must-see. Just remember, if you are offended by it, the joke is on you.” From Classic-horror.com Rob Wrigley Combat Shock (1984) directed by Buddy Giovinazzo Anton Bitel writes on VODZilla – Combat Shock is a downbeat, depressing film, dripping with a persistent pessimism that runs counter to the prevailing Reaganite ideology of the day. Let’s talk about anthologies. No fun discussion of horror should be without it; it’s always a challenge to successfully pull off a short story, as you’ll see when we dig into another batch of Severin Blu-rays, this time thematically tied together by a love of the format. These discs are for all the shorties out there.
Family Portraits: A Trilogy of America (2003):
I thought we’d start with the dark before we get to the light. Family Portraits is pretty much Bleak City, yet brought to life by writer/director Douglas Buck in ways that are surprising, and even touching. The film is actually three separate shorts shot at different points in his career, put together and released as a feature with the subtitle “A Trilogy of America”. Not since “You’ll Believe A Man Can Fly” has one been that apt.

Back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I was (over)active on the bootleg video circuit. One of the directors I discovered in my dealings with other collectors was Jim Van Bebber. His Deadbeat at Dawn was a legend almost immediately after it was released, and his reputation was solidified by a handful of short films which traumatized heretofore steel-bellied horror movie viewers. Even in slightly blurry, multi-generational bootleg copies, his films carried a wallop not felt very often. They were energetic, raw, no-holds-barred and outrageously gory. They had to be seen to be believed.
Fast-forward to the present and Van Bebber is one of a handful of Diy film mavericks, along with Bill Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Sam Raimi, Buddy Giovinazzo and their ilk, now revered for their hardcore 80’s output. But of this group, perhaps Van Bebber stands just a little taller for his extreme persistence.

As diehard horror fans know, Leatherface wasn't the only cinematic killer to rev up a chainsaw, as evidenced by 1982's Pieces, a cult slasher film hitting shelves as a special three-disc Blu-ray on February 23rd from Grindhouse Releasing:
From Diabolik DVD: "Grindhouse Releasing is proud to present the sickest and most violent of all the early '80s slasher movies. A psychopathic killer stalks a Boston campus, brutally slaughtering nubile young college co-eds, collecting body parts from each victim to create the likeness of his mother who he savagely murdered with an axe when he was ten years old! Pieces is a wild, unrated gorefest, with enough splatter and sleaze to shock the most jaded horror fan.
Special Features

The movie-making business is a fickle one, with projects oftentimes appearing one day, then completely disappearing the next. There are so many factors that go into making a movie that it's quite frankly a miracle so many movies actually do end up getting made. But what about the ones that are planned and announced, but never actually materialize? There are a whole lot of them, and today we take a look at a handful of horror movie sequels that found themselves stuck in the dreaded Development Hell. Before the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon One of the most frustrating stories in recent years within the horror genre is the story of the sequel to 2006's utterly brilliant cult classic Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon... a follow-up that, for whatever reason, just can't seem to get off the ground. Bobcat Goldthwait, Buddy Giovinazzo & Joe Dante Among Fantasia Fest’s 2013 Frontieres Co-Prod Market
Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival – it takes place this year between July 18 and August 6 and has always been about more than just the films. They offer plenty of panel discussions and master classes every year, and last year’s edition introduced the Frontières International Co-Production Market, uniting North American, European, and Australasian talent and funders in an initiative focused specifically on fostering genre film productions and relationships. Noteworthy projects from the inaugural edition included new works from seasoned filmmakers such as Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and Bruce McDonald (Pontypool), as well as up-and-coming talent like Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Resolution), Paul Campion (The Devil’s Rock), Jason Eisener (Hobo With a Shotgun), and Jorge Michel Grau (We Are What We Are). At the Fantasia Industry Rendez-Vous – a sort of three-day industry cocktail party – professional introductions were made, and many of the projects found co-producers and/or international sales agents.

Jörg Buttgereit’s notoriously moist horror/gore film Nekromantik (1987) has been churning stomachs for two and a half decades. In honor of this German film’s 25th anniversary, a new DVD release is planned for May 2013 by Titan Video. While this news may excite many a die-hard gore-hound, the film is a tough sell to many other horror fans. Nekromantik - still banned in numerous countries around the globe - has a tendency to upset and nauseate its viewers… whether they adore or deplore the movie.
The film is about a young couple, Rob and Betty, who gain sexual satisfaction from the use of human remains. Rob has a job removing dead bodies and body parts from public areas. Thanks to this grisly career, Rob and Betty have a constant supply of human pieces. One day Rob comes home with an entire corpse, and it becomes the couple’s obsession.

Titan Video has announced the impending return of Nekromantik to American DVD, to mark the film's 25th Anniversary. Directed by controversial German filmmaker Jörg Buttgereit, Nekromantik depicts a bizarre love triangle between a boy, a girl and a rotting corpse. The low-budget film has developed a cult rep for its graphic depiction of necrophilia and copious amounts of gore and squishy corpse stuff, and it secured a rebel reputation for Buttgereit, whose films have been banned, censored and otherwise repressed in many countries (including his native Germany). Udo Kier has worked with the likes of Lars Von Trier, Gus Van Sant, and Rob Zombie. He’s portrayed Dracula (and assorted other vamps), Hitler, and Jekyll and is still going strong after over three decades of acting, his latest role being in Nazis-on-the-moon horror-comedy Iron Sky.
Some would say it’s his piercing blue eyes and thick accent that cement Kier’s presence as deliciously memorable regardless of the size of the part. I would also say it's his unique presence, the way he moves with such elegance and a dash of old world, unearthly sexuality and a twinkle of humor.
This time around we find Kier on the dark side of the moon playing Nazi leader Wolfgang Kortzfleisch. The movie takes place in 2018, in a world with a political landscape much like our own, filled with propaganda, global infighting, and a race for new fuel. Little does...

Ricky D, Michael Ryan and Edgar Chaput are quite familiar with the Fantasia Film Festival, having attended the event for years (some of us since the very beginning); so we thought it would be wise to list our favorite films from the 2012 line up. Enjoy!
Edgar Chaput’s Top 3
3-Game of Werewolves (2012, Juan Martinez Moreno)
A review for this film has already has already been published (link here), but the short version is that director Martinez Moreno and his stellar cast deliver one of the most engaging, hysterical, action packed and wonderfully shot werewolf movies in years. Not this Wolf has a film involving these nightmarish hunters been so entertaining. Its greatest flaw is the script, which makes some bizarre decisions as to character motivations, yet any qualms about why certain people are doing what are squashed by the joy out of seeing Moreno’s interpretation of the universe of lycanthropy…...

Combat Shock
Stars: Rick Giovinazzo, Veronica Stork, Mitch Maglio, Arthur Saunders | Written and Directed by Buddy Giovinazzo
Films are like plays and books; they elicit an emotional response from us, and we hope for happiness to be one of them, especially at the end. Then of course there are the chosen few that are just so grim that they depress you, that they bring your emotions down and make you feel just how low films can go, this is not by doing something disgusting but by telling the story in such a way that it taps into those emotions in you that remove the goodness. One of these is Combat Shock.
Frankie Dunlan is a war vet who upon returning home finds his life in a mess. He lives with a nagging wife, his friends are all junkies and his baby is deformed from the side effects of Agent Orange...

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Image Entertainment. Directors: Douglas Buck, Buddy Giovinazzo, David Gregory, Karim Hussain, Jeremy Kasten, Tom Savini and Richard Stanley. Cast: Guilford Adams, Elissa Dowling, James Gill, Lindsay Goranson, Udo Kier, Tom Savini and Debbie Rochon. Moody and atmospheric, The Theatre Bizarre is an anthology collection of shorts that journeys through Jacobean style surrealist fringe theatre. This opening narrative may not have the same circus charm as Labyrinth in "Manie Manie" (aka "Neo Tokyo"), an animated product from Japan, but the similar approach is certainly noticeable. Both products convey a sense of unworldliness, and thankfully there is a segment that explores the world through the eyes of a young child, a girl. While the live-action does not have the budget to mimic the grandiose vision that the animated masterpiece offered, the shadow play and decayed sets of the stitching narrative certainly works to draw.

Anthologies are rather prevalent in the horror genre as of late, and by late, I mean in the past few years. Trick r’ Treat seemed to have ushered in an era of anthologies that tried to be similar to Creepshow in that they have all tried to create an image that is lasting. Though many disagree with me, I think Chillerama was competent for what it was trying to achieve. I don’t think it’s amazing or that it will be talked about years from now, but it was not a horrible addition to the sub-genre. Deadtime Stories was a miss but does anyone think that a film with Romero’s name attached with actually be good? So here we are with The Theatre Bizarre, a cheaply made anthology that combines the work of 7 directors (six stories, one connecting thread). Each director was given a set amount of money...

While I’ve seen more than a few indie horror anthologies of late—some good, others forgettable—the anthology film seems to be making a comeback.
