We live in scary times that can often feel like lot more unsettling than any fictional horror movie, but some of the best horror movies tap into real world terrors — and that’s especially true of the highlights from the last two decades of the genre, one of the most varied in its history. From graphic depictions of gory showdowns to subtler looks at psychological dread, the best horror movies of the 21st century typically focused on a handful of people struggling to survive a dark force beyond their comprehension. Who can’t relate to that? Here are 20 of the most potent examples, ranked from top to bottom.
20. “The Descent” (2005)
Neil Marshall’s economical monster movie takes place almost exclusively within the confines of a shadowy cave and the terrible, terrible things lurking within it. After a gradual beginning in which coworkers and friends venture into a cave during their...

After Tabu's power packed performance in Vishal Bhardwaj's Haider (adaptation of Hamlet), it is now the turn of the British actress Wendy Glenn to play the role of Hamlet's mother Gertrude in Onir's Veda, which happens to be his adaptation of the Shakespearean classic. Readers may know Wendy Glenn for her roles in American TV shows like CSI: Miami and You're Next. Talking about roping in Wendy for the film, National award filmmaker Onir added, "Wendy is a phenomenal actor and we are so happy to have her as part of the film. She immerses herself in the character, which is such a wonderful quality. She is as stunning a person as she is as an actor." Simultaneously expressing her pleasure of working on an Indian film Glenn says, "It is such a pleasure to be working with Onir, my co-actors, Bhavna and the team and on such an amazing script.

The Battle of The Somme marked one of the bloodiest battles in human history wounding and killing 1,000,000 German and Allied soldiers in its wake. But…there was no winner. Now, 100 years later, a documentary team – led by filmmaker Marcus Singh (Ray Panthaki – 28 Days Later) and Emma Washington (Wendy Glenn – You’re Next) – has travelled to the site to unveil the mysteries that led to that horrendous outcome. But what they unearth is something far worse than they could have imagined – the fallen armies, risen, with an agenda to settle the score.

You're Next - Lionsgate - Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD Director: Adam Wingard Cast: Sharni Vinson, Wendy Glenn, A.J. Bowen, Joe Swanberg, Margaret Laney. Full cast + crew Around this time last year Lionsgate released Dredd on home video and people everywhere slowly started to realize they'd made a huge mistake by not seeing it and supporting it when it was theaters. Hopefully the same thing happens to You're Next, a highly entertaining horror film about a family reunion in the woods that goes horribly wrong when masked killers show up and try to pick them off one by one. That plot description probably gives you an idea of what kind of movie You're Next is, but it's not an entirely accurate one. This isn't just another...

Directed by Adam Wingard (VHS, A Horrible Way to Die) and set during a family reunion in a remote part of the countryside in the Us, You’re Next sees the moneyed Davison family besieged by lunatic killers in creepy animal masks. Fortunately, it turns out that Erin, the girlfriend of one of the eldest brother is something of a total bad-ass herself and is soon rallying the family around to fight back with makeshift weaponry and traps. Thus begins a small scale war with their attackers. Who will survive and what will be left of them?
Despite my initial excitement, I was actually fairly nonplussed by You’re Next at first. It seemed fairly stolid, with broadly drawn characters and an uninventive set up.

Happy 2014 Everyone! Looking back, I thought 2013 was an exceptional year for horror, especially for independent genre fare that ended making up most of my favorite films over the last 12 months. In fact, 2013 ended up being so good, even a number of remakes that came out this year managed to be as strong as their original horror peers and that’s pretty damn impressive.
Here’s a look at some of my very favorite things that happened in horror along the way during 2013:
John Dies at the End:
I’d been waiting patiently to see Don Coscarelli’s John Dies at the End ever since I chatted him up about the project at SXSW 2012. Thankfully, the film didn’t disappoint at all when it was released last January. Wonderfully weird and oddly heartfelt, no one has quite mastered the art of the unexpected like Coscarelli has throughout his career...

Director: Adam Wingard. Writer: Simon Barrett. Cast: Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, Aj Bowen and Joe Swanberg. The horror feature You're Next was created by Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, two of the filmmakers behind V/H/S (2012) and V/H/S 2 (2013). These two filmmakers are no stranger to horror and neither are the actors. You're Next is a home invasion thriller, which hosts some mystery, not unlike Bryan Bertino's The Strangers. A family reunion is ruined and most horrorites will find You're Next an entertaining and thrilling time. The film unravels quickly. A mother and father have invited their progeny to a country retreat. It is their 35th wedding anniversary and all of the siblings are in attendance: Felix (Nicholas Tucci), Crispian (Aj Bowen), Drake (Joe Swanberg) and Aimee (Amy Seimetz). The usual sibling rivalries unfold, but events heat up even more when three masked killers enter the mix.

The Animals Are Hunting You. Lionsgate delivers You're Next, a brutal home-invasion thriller in which no one is safe. While the blood and gore flow into theaters, check out what Cinelinx thought of this latest addition to the modern horror genre.
The Basics
At a remote, country estate, a wealthy couple are preparing to mark their 35th anniversary. But once the family has assembled for celebrations, they house comes under brutal seige by masked assailants. As the body count rises, the tables are suddenly turned when one of the party guests proves shockingly adept at playing the killers' own game.
Director: Adam Wingard
Writer: Simon Barrett
Actors: Sharni Vinson, Nicholas Tucci, Ti West, A.J. Bowen, Wendy Glenn, Joe Swanberg, and Rob Moran

Lionsgate’s You’Re Next takes one of the most terrifying film genres, the home-invasion movie, and turns it on its head—adding dimension, drama, and bone-chilling realism to one of life’s most universal fears. The story follows an upper-class family, the Davisons, who are as rich as they are estranged. In an earnest attempt to bring everyone back together, Aubrey and Paul Davison decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by inviting their four children and their significant others to a family reunion at their remote and slightly rundown weekend estate.
At first it seems like decades-old sibling rivalries will derail any hope of reconciliation. But that quickly, and very abruptly, becomes the least of the Davisons’ concerns when their home comes under siege by a mask-wearing team of crossbow-bearing assailants. The family has no idea who’s attacking them, why they’re under attack, or if the attackers...

You're Next is not really all that scary, but where it finds its charm is in the fact it expects and wants you to laugh at and with it. It's a gory little riff on a home invasion story a la The Strangers with a dose of Home Alone and When a Stranger Calls with the familiar, badass female survivor trope at its core. And all of this works in its favor, ultimately delivering a fun, if disposable horror entry worth a matinee ticket. The hard part is getting into the story because this film isn't boasting a wealth of acting talent as director Adam Wingard (V/H/S) does what he can with what he's given, but only his lead actress, Sharni Vinson, comes through unscathed of those that live longer than 20 minutes. The story revolves around the Davison family reunion at a secluded vacation house in the woods...

Chicago – “You’re Next” is a brutal, blunt, bloody instrument of a horror film. It works as well as it does because of an engaging performance from a future star at its center and a writer/director team willing to get in, get gory, and get out.
I wish the set-up was a bit more engaging and the tone more consistent but there’s a lot to like here, especially for fans of the genre looking for something that doesn’t need a supernatural twist to stay scary. Every issue I had with “You’re Next” was beat into bloody submission by what works about it – it’s a primal force of a movie, a sledgehammer to a genre in need of waking up.
Rating: 3.5/5.0

Lionsgate has just released a brand new, chilling clip for the horror film of the summer, You’Re Next.
The film reunites the team behind serial-killer thriller A Horrible Way to Die, including director/editor Adam Wingard and writer/producer Simon Barrett.

The filmmakers hope audiences will feel like they’re “living in the moment” when watching You’Re Next. That, and take a little bit of the story home with them. “When you’re making a good horror movie, the goal is, in some ways, to deliberately put things in the film that people have to think about when they’re alone later,” Barrett says. “It’s like putting a character under a bed so that when you’re lying in bed at night you’re like, ‘Oh wait,’ and you think about...

The masks from Lionsgate’s You’Re Next are descending on cities around the country and have found their way to St. Louis.
There is no escaping the animal-masked, ax-wielding murderers in this devilishly smart and horrifying thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The Davison family planned on the perfect reunion, but didn’t expect a violent intrusion… could you survive if there was nowhere to hide?
As you can see in these shots of the Animals, no one – including Al MacInnis, Jack Buck, Ozzie Smith and Chuck Berry – is safe in our fair city.
But beware – they are on the move and might be in your neighborhood already.
Lionsgate’s You’Re Next takes one of the most terrifying film genres, the home-invasion movie, and turns it on its head—adding dimension, drama, and bone-chilling realism to one of life’s most universal fears.

The Animals have arrived. Lionsgate has just released a new poster for the incredibly clever and terrifying horror thriller, You’Re Next. Ain’t It Cool News, FEARnet, and Cinema Blend each debuted an exclusive teaser Gif of The Animals, and now you can check out the full poster Gif on the You’Re Next site: http://fuckyeahyourenext.tumblr.com/.
