From Bono to Domingo, the stars line up to sing the praises of their late friend in Ron Howard’s heart-sinking documentary
Bland, incurious and passionless, this documentary about the great tenor Luciano Pavarotti is like a promotional video licensed by a team of copyright lawyers – and about as challenging as a Three Tenors gig at Wembley stadium. Pavarotti’s glorious voice all but drowns in a 114-minute montage of obsequious syrup.
Director Ron Howard certainly has an important lineup of interviewees: co-tenors José Carreras and Plácido Domingo, first wife Adua Veroni, second wife Nicoletta Mantovani, assistant, student and former lover Madelyn Renee – and also his New York manager Herbert Breslin and London promoter Harvey Goldsmith. Everyone is on their best behaviour, no one speaking out of turn about the great man or each other. Weirdly, the most interesting interview moments come in old archive footage of Pavarotti speaking to Clive James and Russell Harty.

Watching Ron Howard enlist an all-star cast of experts, industry luminaries and celebrities to catalog Luciano Pavarotti’s many, many achievements as a singer, it’s easy to think that the filmmaker chose hagiography as his preferred storytelling format for the new documentary “Pavarotti.”
But in exploring a career distinguished by industry-changing benchmarks, and a life driven by the opera superstar’s irrepressible charisma that even his ex-wife cheerfully forgives his transgressions, Howard can be forgiven for showing his subject the same generosity that Pavarotti extended to the world through both his art and his personality.
A celebratory but thoughtful overview of Luciano Pavarotti’s life, loves and career, “Pavarotti” skillfully chronicles the larger-than-life performer’s transformative impact on the opera industry, as well as upon the people that he encountered, professionally and personally, during his more than 50-year career.

Aretha Franklin is going on tour — or, rather, the concert movie she stars in is, as “Amazing Grace” is being booked for a solid week’s worth of premieres across the country at the end of March, Variety has learned. Alan Elliott, the documentary’s producer, and prominent civil rights activist Rev. William J. Oscar winning Composer Hans Zimmer has been in the film industry for 30 years churning out classic soundtrack after classic soundtrack. He may not be a name you’d recognise but his music most definitely will be having been responsible for movie scores which include Rain Man in the late 80s, Bird on a Wire, Days of Thunder, Thelma & Louise, A League of Their Own, Backdraft, Muppet Treasure Island, The Rock (my personal favourite) in the 90s and more recently he’s worked on scores which include Gladiator, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Inception, Man of Steel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Intersteller. The list is literally endless with classic score after classic score.

Frank Sidebottom was possibly the strangest pop star in history. Jon Ronson, who played in his band, and has co-written a film inspired by the character starring Michael Fassbender, remembers Frank's creator Chris Sievey as being even more eccentric than his papier-mache alter ego
In 1987 I was 20 and the student union entertainments officer for the Polytechnic of Central London. One day I was sitting in the office when the telephone rang. I picked it up.
"So Frank's playing tonight and our keyboard player can't make it and so we're going to have to cancel unless you know any keyboard players," said a frantic voice.
I cleared my throat. "I play keyboards," I said.
"Well you're in!" the man shouted.
"But I don't know any of your songs," I said.
"Wait a minute," the man said.
I heard muffled voices. He came back to the phone. "Can you play C, F and G?...

Brilliant. It was very, very well done. This was about Great Britain; it didn't pretend it was trying to have global appeal. Because Great Britain has self-confidence, it doesn't need a monumental Olympics. But for China that was the only imaginable kind of international event. Beijing's Olympics were very grand – they were trying to throw a party for the world, but the hosts didn't enjoy it. Peaches Geldof has been left unimpressed with a British TV drama based on her father's campaign to stage 1985 charity supergig Live Aid, branding it "exhausting" to watch. The story of how Bob Geldof and promoter Harvey Goldsmith put the massive event together, staged in London and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in just six months was dramatized for a BBC TV movie, "When Harvey Met Bob", starring Domhnall Gleeson as the singer and Ian Hart as the promoter. It debuted on Sunday, December 26 - and Peaches was watching.
But the socialite/columnist was far from happy with the Christmas TV special - and she has taken aim at Gleeson's portrayal of her father. In a series of posts on her Twitter.com page, she writes, "The guy acting as my dad on When Harvey Met Bob on tv right now is beyond terrible. What is that Accent?! He's not a leprechaun!"

The Who are teaming up with Debbie Harry, Richard Ashcroft and Jeff Beck to put on a charity concert to raise funds for a pioneering new cancer treatment. Legendary promoter Harvey Goldsmith and The Who's manager Bill Curbishley have organized the gig at London's HMV Hammersmith Apollo in January 2011 to help U.K. charity Killing Cancer.
Proceeds from ticket sales will go towards funding the installation of groundbreaking light therapy lasers in British hospitals. And Goldsmith admits the cause is close to his heart following the recent death of his beloved mother.
He says, "I lost my mother to cancer in the past 12 months. I saw how she struggled but finally lost the fight. The funds Bill, myself and some great friends in the business have already pledged, is giving pancreatic cancer patients real hope".

London -- The story behind Irish rock star Bob Geldof's global Live Aid concert to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia is being made into a TV film, the BBC said on Wednesday.
The 1985 concert, organized by Geldof and music promoter Harvey Goldsmith, reached an estimated 1.5 billion people and did much to raise the public and political profile of those suffering from poverty, starvation and disease in Africa.
Filming has already begun in Dublin for the 90-minute drama "When Harvey met Bob," which follows the story from the moment Geldof arrived home to find his then girlfriend Paula Yates holding their baby and weeping as she watched television footage from feeding camps in Eritrea.
Played by Domhnall Gleeson, who stars in the upcoming seventh Harry Potter film, Geldof persuaded a host of rock stars to give their name and talents for free to the Band Aid charity Christmas...

Music mogul Harvey Goldsmith still can't believe he and Bob Geldof managed to stage the most famous concert in history in just 10 weeks because it came in the middle of one of his craziest years. The legendary British promoter initially had no intention of taking on Geldof's Live Aid, which took place 25 years ago today, July 13 1985, after returning from China for Wham!'s historic tour and signing up Roger Waters after he had quit Pink Floyd, but the Boomtown Rats' frontman was very persuasive.
Goldsmith recalls, "That was the maddest year of my life; I'd taken George Michael and Wham! to China. I was looking after Roger Waters when he split from Pink Floyd and then Bob Geldof was banging on my door saying, 'I've got this idea, we're going to do Live Aid'."

British comic Russell Brand is so "high maintenance" he's given his entourage "mental breakdowns", according to his former personal assistant.
Liliana dalla Piana quit her job as an aide to the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star after he constantly walked around his home in his underwear.
And Piana has issued a stark warning to any future employee of Brand's.
She tells Britain's People newspaper, "Russell was very, very high maintenance. He used to walk around in his underpants. Calvin Klein boxers might have done it for me, but Y-fronts certainly didn't."
"Some things I was asked to do were nearly impossible. I've worked for Michael Flatley and Harvey Goldsmith but Russell was by far the most demanding. He does go through a lot of personal assistants, I think some have even had mental breakdowns."...

Live promoter Harvey Goldsmith has said that he "can't see the point" in Led Zeppelin reuniting without Robert Plant. Goldsmith, who helped organise the group's one-off reformation at the 02 Arena in 2007, suggested that Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham tour under a different name if they want to play together. "I certainly don't think they should do a big tour because I can't see the point of it," he told the BBC. "I doubt it will be called Led Zeppelin. I just think it's a lot of talk, (more)...

LONDON -- London-based Edge Group is looking to broaden its live music investment portfolio on the other side of the Atlantic.
The media investment and advisory firm's founder David Glick is heading to New York on Wednesday for a slate of meetings to build bridges with U.S. promoters.
"We see great potential in helping entrepreneurial U.S. businesses not only to develop in their home live music market, but also to export their expertise and ideas to Europe," Glick said.
The firm's Edge Performance Venture Capital Trust has already raised $40 million in its first two funding rounds, according to a spokesman, and expects to raise a similar figure in the next round of funding, details for which will be unveiled in October.
Glick is bullish on the VCT's potential. "We expect to have $100 million to invest in the live music and events business within 18 months," he said, "and under U.K. tax rules we can invest up to half of it outside the U.K."
Edge Group launched its VCT in early 2006 as a tax efficient investment scheme intended for individual investors, catering for levels ranging from £5,000 ($10,000) to £200,000 ($400,000) per person
The VCT's board features a host of senior British entertainment executives, including promoter Harvey Goldsmith, artist managers Frank Presland and Michael Eaton, and Sir Robin Miller, former chairman of both EMAP and HMV.

Read about the Live Earth documentary
International broadcasters, environmental activists and some of the biggest names in pop music are in the starting blocks for one of the most ambitious global media events of all time.
On Saturday, more than 150 acts -- including such marquee names as Madonna, the Police, Bon Jovi and Black Eyed Peas -- will perform at the Live Earth series of benefit concerts in support of a greener planet.
The event, organized by Kevin Wall and Harvey Goldsmith -- the producers behind Bob Geldof's 2005 anti-poverty event, Live 8 -- is looking to reach 2 billion people in more than 120 countries worldwide.
The concerts will be held in New York; London; Sydney; Tokyo; Shanghai, China; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Johannesburg, South Africa; and Hamburg, Germany. Inuit band Nunatak will even play a concert direct from Antarctica.
Former Vice President Al Gore and his organization, the Alliance for Climate Protection, are the green driving force behind the event, which also will include more than 6,000 local Live Earth events, from home viewing parties to big open-air gatherings, linked via satellite.
Some of the world's biggest broadcasters are on board to carry the concerts live, including NBC Universal TV in the U.S., the BBC in Britain, NHK and Fuji TV in Japan and Pro7 in Germany (Microsoft's MSN has exclusive global online rights). But while media attention is growing in such countries as the U.S. and the U.K., Live Earth has virtually no media footprint in nations including China or Turkey, where environmental issues are less front-and-center.

CANNES -- Live 8 mastermind Bob Geldof stopped by at MIDEM, the annual gathering of the music industry, to pick up another prize on Monday but he said this one was different. Named with Live 8 partners U.K. promoter Harvey Goldsmith and IFPI chairman and CEO John Kennedy as personalities of the year at the 40th MIDEM, Geldof said it gave him the chance to say thanks to the music industry. "Live 8 is a compliment to all the people who will be in the room tonight," Geldof said at a news briefing ahead of a banquet marking the mart's anniversary. "There is no other industry on the planet that could do what they did for Live 8. It is a hugely efficient industry and there was not a single branch of it that was not involved. To get an award from this crowd is payback, it's a huge compliment."...

Newly vindicated pop superstar Michael Jackson's plans to breath life back into his music career by performing at Live 8 are being considered by organizers of the star-studded extravaganza. Following his acquittal of child molestation on Monday night, Jackson is keen to return to the stage, and sees either the London or Philadelphia legs of the event as the perfect places to relaunch himself. And Live 8 organizers are thinking about booking the controversial star, who co-wrote the 1980s hit We Are The World with Lionel Richie, raising more than $90 million for famine relief. Promoter Harvey Goldsmith says, "Obviously we'd consider it." But Goldsmith hinted Jackson may not recover from the mental and physical damage he suffered during the grueling three month case in time - after reportedly losing more than 13 kilograms in weight during the court case. He adds, "Whether it's appropriate is another issue, whether he is in a fit state is another issue, whether he can work is another issue and whether he can work live is another issue."...

Five free concerts will be held July 2 in London, Philadelphia, Paris, Berlin and Rome, organizer and concert promoter Harvey Goldsmith said. A text message lottery is scheduled for Monday to determine who will gain tickets to the U.K. concert.
