The hustle of show business means people not-infrequently have two projects hitting the market at the same time.
Even so, filmmaker Nick Davis is the creative force behind one of the more unusual doubleheaders in recent memory. He directed ESPN “30 for 30” limited series Once Upon a Time in Queens, an account of the World Series-winning, earth-scorching 1986 New York Mets. The two-night, four hour docuseries, whose executive producers include Jimmy Kimmel, premieres tonight and concludes tomorrow. Also today, Knopf has published Davis’s book, Competing with Idiots, a dual portrait of Joseph and Herman Mankiewicz that had been in the works for nearly two decades. The Hollywood royals were his great-uncle and grandfather, respectively.
“I’ve thought about what common ground there is between these projects,” Davis said in an interview with Deadline. “And I think what it is is that I have no memory of not being Herman Mankiewicz’s grandson.

ESPN examined the 1990s Chicago Bulls in a celebrated documentary series and probed the fortunes of the 1970s New York Yankees in a serialized drama. Now the sports-media giant has big plans for the New York Mets.
ESPN Films plans to release “Once Upon a Time in Queens,” a four-part series on the 1986 Mets, later this year on both ESPN and ESPN Plus. The series, produced under the umbrella of the Disney unit’s “30 for 30” documentary unit, is executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel, Sal “Cousin Sal” Iacono, Kimmelot’s Scott Lonker, and MLB’s Nick Trotta. It is directed and produced by Nick Davis.
The program will tell the story of the Mets’ World Series comeback, using hours of never-before-seen footage of the team. Players featured include: Bobby Ojeda; Darryl Strawberry; manager Davey Johnson; Dwight Gooden; Keith Hernandez; Kevin Mitchell; Lenny Dykstra; Mookie Wilson; Roger McDowell; Sid Fernandez; and Wally Backman.

The 1986 World Series-winning run by the New York Mets will get multi-part documentary treatment by ESPN in a project under the 30 for 30 banner whose executive producers include Jimmy Kimmel.
ESPN Films said Thursday the series would chronicle the team’s exploits on and off the field. In the Series, the Boston Red Sox were one strike away from victory before a two-out rally and a ground ball hit by Mookie Wilson slipped through the legs of Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner. The comeback, ESPN said in a press release, “was merely the climax of an epic tale of ambition and swagger set in a city that was synonymous with excess.”
The network promises “hours of never-before-seen footage” of the team, a group of disparate, larger-than-life characters who made a big impression on and off the field. Many members of the team went on to generate headlines long after 1986, among them Darryl Strawberry,...

ESPN is teaming with Jimmy Kimmel for a multi-part “30 for 30” on the 1986 New York Mets.
Kimmel, an unabashed fan of the Mets, will executive produce the documentary under his Kimmelot production banner, with Sal Iacono (“Cousin Sal”), Scott Lonker, Jordana Hochman and Mlb’s Nick Trotta. Nick Davis will direct.
The multi-part series will feature hours of never-before-seen footage of the ’86 Mets, a team known just as much for its off-field exploits as it was for its on-field dominance. It also came during a unique moment in New York baseball history: When the Mets were arguably more popular than their cross-town rival Yankees, who were in the midst of a dry spell (that would obviously not last long).

With a new decade approaching, Topps unveiled grand plans for an ambitious and unconventional series of baseball cards called Topps Project 2020, a one-of-a-kind trading card event that combined contemporary art and iconic baseball cards.
The concept was simple enough: 20 artists are reimagining 20 iconic baseball rookie cards—Griffey, Mays, Robinson, Koufax, and Clemente, to name only a few—for a complete set of 400 cards to be released over the course of 2020. Each artist brings a unique flavor to the mix. Ben Baller added bling to the Ichiro 2001. King Saladeen was inspired by New York street art when he crafted his 1992 Derek Jeter card. Fucci is going faceless. And JK5 has Mike Trout shooting lasers out of his eyes, in case you had any doubt that the Angels outfielder wasn’t Superman.
To market the project, the trading card manufacturer lined up year-long promotional events and ballpark exclusives to coincide...

Lenny Dykstra has taken his war with ex-Mets teammate, Ron Darling, to court -- suing the former pitcher for painting him as a foul-mouthed racist in his new book. Darling recently published "108 Stitches: Loose Threads, Ripping Yarns and the Darndest Characters from My Time in the Game" ... which features stories from his playing days. But, Dykstra says a story about him mercilessly taunting Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd -- a black pitcher -- during the 1986 World Series is pure Bs.

A review of The Night Of finale coming up just as soon as I forget my hat... "Who did it?" -Stone The Night Of was, in no particular order, a murder mystery; a legal procedural; a drama about the way the gears of the criminal justice system can grind on cop, criminal, and family member alike; a harrowing portrait of how a civilian survives behind bars; and a black comic character study of the low-rent attorney who finds himself in the middle of it all. These are not incompatible kinds of stories; you often see many of them comfortably overlapping in the same production (even if John Stone's eczema was unique to Criminal Justice and this remake). But as The Night Of moved along, it became clear that Price and Zaillian were better at — or simply more interested in — certain aspects than others, excelling whenever the focus was on...

Dwight Gooden is fidgety and appears anxious. The question of his sobriety is never addressed. Asked by TheWrap how his former teammate was doing in his years-long battle with cocaine and alcohol, Strawberry said this: “I know it wasn’t , and clearly they didn’t probably want to expose that. It seemed like it was a difficult time — I don’t know if it is.” TheWrap reached out to film co-director.

One of the things they’ve been doing during this World Series – and every one, really – is comparing them to series contenders of years past. This year, the references to the ’85 Royals and the ’86 Mets have come fast and furious, and while it’s great to talk about Gary Carter, Darryl Strawberry, and Dwight Gooden again, it’s not like anybody under the age of 30 saw them play in their prime. More to the point, no one is becoming a baseball fan today from watching those guys from back then.
Sadly, to me, I think it’s the same with superheroes.
Nobody is becoming a fan of superheroes today if their first exposures are comics from 30+ years ago. I’m not talking about the characters and concepts, I’m speaking only of the works themselves. There are a lot of young kids who fell in love with Supergirl this week,...

Michael Lohan is officially one of Dr. Drew's clients on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew". The line-up for this season has been announced and the father of actress Lindsay Lohan perhaps is the most exciting celebrity to watch. He checks in for anger management.
"Michael is absolutely 100% sober. He hasn't been using drugs or alcohol, but he is being treated for anger management issues. Michael has tremendous admiration for Dr. Drew Pinsky, and was given this opportunity to better himself, and he took it," a source told Radar Online. In addition, he is set to take home $180,000 after he completes the stint.
However, someone who is not happy with his involvement on the show is none other than Lindsay. According to TMZ, Lindsay is "shocked and upset" that Michael would join without informing her first. The actress, who has been in Drew's wish list for years, fears he would embarrass...

One of the biggest baseball stories over the weekend wasn't the latest dominant performance from Washington Nationals rookie pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg or Manny Ramirez's return to Fenway Park for the first time since he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers two years ago. Rather, it was the strange headlines grabbed by Lady Gaga, who attended the New York City "Subway Series" on Friday night (June 18). Following the game (while wearing little more than underwear and a Yankees jersey), Gaga made her way into the Yankees clubhouse to drink some whiskey and visit with a handful of the players. She was asked to leave, which lead many to believe that she had been banned from the place. But Yankees general manager Brian Cashman clarified the team's official stance on Sunday (June 20). "She's not banned," he said. "Celebrities aren't banned. If Michael Jordan showed up here he would have access...

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard Hawks’ El Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets.

1. David Wright. 2. Zadie Smith. 3. Buck Henry. From PatrickMcMullan.com. Vf Daily’s picks for the top three parties around the globe last night. Home Sweet Homer What: The Mets home opener. Where: Citi Field, Queens, and on TV screens around New York City. Who: A motley crew that included New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, Bernie Madoff (in spirit only), a slew of retired Mets (such as Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, Mike Piazza, Dwight Gooden, and Darryl Strawberry), comedian Jerry Seinfeld, actor Matthew Broderick, reality-tv star Donald Trump, the cast of Broadway’s West Side Story, and a tan cat. Why: Because it was the first game the team played in its brand-new, $800 million stadium. If that’s not something worth celebrating, we don’t know what is. Talking Point: The Mets’ third baseman, David Wright, because he tied the score 5-5 with a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

Despite their steroid scandals, today's baseball superstars are still choirboys compared to the boozing, skirt-chasing New York Mets of the mid-1980s.
