The single-camera project takes place in a suburban New Jersey town where the facade of peace and civility is disrupted by the shocking death of a longtime Township Council member. Though Ryan is already attached to produce the series, she is in talks to star in it, as well.

Meg Ryan will executive produce and “potentially” star in a comedy project for NBC, “The Obsolescents,” from Lorne Michaels.
The comedy takes place in a New Jersey suburb where the facade of peace and civility is disrupted by the shocking death of a longtime Township Council member. If Ryan were to come aboard as the star for the comedy, it would mark the first regular TV role for the “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail” star in decades.
She was attached to narrate CBS’ ill-fated “How I Met Your Mother” spinoff, “How I Met Your Dad,” which never got past the pilot stage.

NBC has put in development The Obsolescents, a single-camera comedy from writer Andrew Gottlieb (The Dangerous Book for Boys), Meg Ryan, Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video and Universal TV where the company has a deal. Ryan is executive producing the project and will potentially star.
Written by Gottlieb, The Obsolescents takes place in a New Jersey suburb where the facade of peace and civility is disrupted by the shocking death of a long-time Township Council member.
Gottlieb and Ryan executive produce alongside Broadway Video’s Michaels and Andrew Singer. Ryan recently had a comedy starring vehicle, which came close to a series order at Epix. Except for occasional guest appearances — most notably on Web Therapy — she has not been a series regular since the short-lived 1985 ABC Western Wildside.

The project is titled “The Obsolescents” and takes place in a New Jersey suburb where the facade of peace and civility is disrupted by the shocking death of a long-time Township Council member.

Locarno, Switzerland — Focusing very much on her new career as a director and producer, Meg Ryan is preparing “The Obsolescents,” a half-hour comedy. Developed from an original idea by Ryan, and turning on middle-age, the series is being written by Andrew Gottlieb (“Z Rock”). Ryan, who has sold the idea to NBC, will produce, may contribute to writing.
The scripts are at an initial stage. Ryan took the idea to Broadway Video Ent., headed by Lorne Michaels, the creator and executive producer of “Saturday Night Live,” who introduced her to Gottlieb, Ryan said at Switzerland’s Locarno Festival where on Friday night she was presented on stage the Festival’s 2018 Leopard Club Award, following in the footsteps of Faye Dunaway, Mia Farrow, Andy Garcia, Stefania Sandrelli and Adrien Brody.
Celebrating Ryan’s career, the Locarno Festival will screen “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993) and “In the Cut” (2003).

Warner Brothers has acquired the comedy Dumped, being written by Vic Levin based on a forthcoming novel by Andrew Gottlieb. The project is being developed for Steve Carell to star, with his production company supporting the back end as well. Carell would play a man searching for new meaning in his life after his wife abruptly files for divorce. Unfortunately, that's the only synopsis there is, although I've got a feeling there is a bit more to this, as a concept that simple wouldn't normally make headlines and attract Carell. No word on who is being pursued as a director, although I'm thinking Vic Levin might take it. Dumped is one of a handful of projects pursuing Carell. He's obviously very high profile, and supportive of great scripts, because not only has his production company actually decided to produce most of these projects, but he's being courted by so many...

In Dumped, Carell will play a man searching for new meaning in his life after his wife abruptly files for divorce.
Technically, I call that "rebound," and remember those periods of my life to be blissful, so maybe this film goes that same direction. You know, like 40 Year-Old Re-Virgin. If you've been watching Carell, then you know his popularity is still on the uphill. After signing a first-look deal with Warner Bros. through his Carousel banner, he has been in orbit of a plethora of projects.

Although it won’t be on the market until January 2009, Warner Bros. has already acquired the rights to develop a big-screen version of Andrew Gottlieb’s novel “Drink, Play, F@#k,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
As you may have guessed already, Gottlieb’s book is a provocative answer to Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-seller “Eat, Pray, Love,” in which she struggles to find peace after going through an unpleasant divorce.
In “Drink,” a man named Bob Sullivan travels to Ireland, Las Vegas and Thailand to find peace after his wife leaves him. Naturally, his experiences turn out to be a whole lot more vulgar than Gilbert’s.
Interesting also is that Gilbert’s book is also in the process of being developed for the big screen. The project is produced by Paramount and may star Julia Roberts in the lead role.

- We've all been told that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. According to THR, Warner Bros. will be comedically reinforcing this age-old gender binary with a retort against Elizabeth Gilbert's 2006 memoir Eat, Pray, Love. This "male comedy," bluntly titled Drink, Play, F@#K, will follow one man who seeks solace in alchohol, gambling and sex after his wife leaves him. GIlbert's novel, which remained on the New York Times' bestseller list for over a year, recounts the author's journey to self-discovery through fine dining in Italy, spiritual exploration in India and love in Indonesia. Posing a possible cinematic battle of the sexes, Paramount Pictures purchased the rights to the memoir, with Julia Roberts attached to star and Brad Pitt's production company, Plan B, producing. The title of this book, Drink, Play, F@#k, is probably enough to grab your attention, but when when you find out more about this comedy, you may genuinely be interested. The book is a response to Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir Eat, Pray, Love, which tells the story of her quest to find peace after a painful divorce by seeking culinary solace in Italy, spiritual comfort in India and a romantic respite in Indonesia. On the flip side, Andrew Gottlieb's book, which is not at all directly connected and doesn't hit bookshelves until next January, tells the story of a man seeking solace after his wife leaves him, in which he goes on a drinking spree in Ireland, takes a gambling jaunt to Las Vegas and a embarks on a sex-tourism trip to Thailand. And if that's not enough, Paramount and Warner Bros. will be going head-to-head with adaptations of each.

New York -- Warner Bros. has acquired rights to the book "Drink, Play, F@#K," the provocatively titled comedic male retort to the femme-centric best-seller "Eat, Pray, Love."
The soon-to-be-published "Play," by comedy writer Andrew Gottlieb, tells the fictional story of Bob Sullivan, a man who, seeking solace after his wife leaves him, goes on a bender in Ireland, takes a gambling jaunt to Las Vegas and a embarks on a sex-tourism trip to Thailand. Grove Press is scheduled to publish the tome early next year.
Gottlieb is a comedy writer who helped create "Z Rock," the satiric IFC series loosely based on the lives of rock stars that the network will debut this month.
Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir "Eat, Pray, Love" -- which is not officially connected to "Play" -- centers on the author's quest to find peace through various modes of living after she endures a painful divorce. Gilbert takes a more delicate route in her hour of need, seeking culinary solace in Italy, spiritual comfort in India and a romantic respite in Indonesia.
Gilbert's memoir, the paperback version of which has sat on the New York Times best-seller list for more than a year, is being developed by Plan B at Paramount, with Julia Roberts attached to star.

Darn disappointing, Disney's lackluster remake of 1965's "That Darn Cat!" features Christina Ricci ("Casper") in the Hayley Mills role, while venerable Dean Jones ("The Shaggy D.A".) appears as a supporting character. Some basic elements of the story line have remained, but the new film's family-oriented humor is even more stilted and tame than the original.
British TV director Bob Spiers' feature debut has a few rewarding moments, but its target audience of kids and cat lovers will not be generating strong word-of-mouth. "That Darn Cat" is based on the novel "Undercover Cat" by the Gordons and their screenplay of the first film, co-written by Bill Walsh.
Besides veterans Jones and Estelle Parsons, the movie's eclectic cast includes Peter Boyle, Bess Armstrong, Dyan Cannon and Michael McKean in a very silly tale of a feline informant and nutty New Englanders on both sides of the law.
Alas, 1997's "That Darn Cat" is light years away from the original's drive-ins, muscle cars and mainstream mid-'60s comedy, not to mention the cast that included William Demarest, Elsa Lanchester, Frank Gorshin and Neville Brand.
No one performer is at fault, certainly not Doug E. Doug, who tries hard as a twitchy, manic FBI agent to make this cinematic fleabag come to life. But Ricci has little to do with her underwritten character, and a subplot involving a lonely butcher (Megan Cavanaugh) and two gung-ho security guards (Tom Wilson, Brian Haley) is mildly amusing at best.
Darn Cat, or "D.C". as his mistress Patti (Ricci) calls the gray beast, pussyfoots around the neighborhood one night and finds the kidnapped maid of the Flints (Jones, Cannon), obnoxious millionaires reluctant to pay the hefty ransom. The ridiculous scenario has the FBI becoming involved in a nocturnal tracking of D.C. by several agents.
George Dzundza plays the cranky boss of Doug's character, who goes through many humiliating experiences before making the cat angle payoff. Boyle and Rebecca Schull are unimpressive as an aging couple who play a major role in the overblown climax.
Just as in Robert Stevenson's version, which featured a Siamese, the lead feline is never quite made as endearing as one expects, with the attention focused on the humans and their mundane conflicts.
