The cause and manner of death for the late Johnny Hardwick, who spent more than a decade voicing Dale Gribble on Fox’s King of the Hill, is undetermined, according to the Travis County Medical Examiner.
A report obtained by The Hollywood Reporter cites “extensive decompositional changes” to the state of Hardwick’s body, impeding the ability to identify either. The examiner did note, however, that indications pointed to his death being relatively sudden and that he likely did not drown. The 64-year-old Emmy winner was found lying, face upward, in a bathtub in his Austin home on Aug. 8 following a welfare check conducted by local authorities.
The autopsy and postmortem computed tomography, or a Ct scan deployed separately from a physical examination of the body, were reportedly conducted beginning Aug. 9 and determined he was “moderately” decomposed with no obvious trauma. King of the Hill fans were shocked to learn of the death of Johnny Hardwick last week. The actor was best known as the voice of Dale Gribble, Hank Hill’s conspiracy-obsessed neighbour on the animated series. When it was officially announced that Hulu had ordered a King of the Hill revival earlier this year, Johnny Hardwick was expected to return, but did he actually get the chance to record any episodes before his death?
According to TVLine, Johnny Hardwick had completed work on “a couple” episodes of the King of the Hill revival. Hopefully this means that we’ll get to hear the actor’s pitch-perfect take on Dale Gribble just one more time. As far as the rest of the episodes of the revival go, it’s not certain if someone else will take over as the voice of Dale or if they’ll retire the character.

"King of the Hill" fans were hit with the sad news last week that Johnny Hardwick, the voice of Hank Hill's longtime friend Dale Gribble, had passed away at 64. Hardwick lent his voice to Dale across all 13 seasons of Mike Judge's animated series, which originally ran from 1997 through 2009. However, "King of the Hill" fans had been looking forward to a series revival of the comedy at Hulu, hot on the heels of the return of Judge's other animated comedy hit "Beavis and Butt-Head" on Paramount + and Comedy Central. But with no window for the revival's return, many have been wondering whether or not Hardwick was able to record lines for Dale's return on the show before his passing. We now have the answer.

Johnny Hardwick, who voiced the chain-smoking exterminator Dale Gribble for the entire 13-season run of the Fox animated hit King of the Hill, has died. He was 64.
Officers responding to a call for a welfare check found Hardwick dead in his home in Austin on Tuesday, police said, adding that the case is not being investigated as a homicide and that the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office.
Hardwick voiced Dale — the conspiracy theorist who lives next door to his best friend, propane accessory salesman Hank Hill (co-creator Mike Judge), and uses pocket sand when necessary — from 1997-2010 and was a writer, story editor and producer on the show as well.
The animators were said to have drawn Dale to look (and smoke) just like Hardwick, and he appeared on more than 250 episodes. He shared an Emmy for outstanding animated program in 1999 and was...

Today brings the sad and unexpected news that Johnny Hardwick, the popular voice actor behind Dale Gribble on "King of the Hill," has died at the age of 64. No information regarding the nature of his passing was immediately available, as the news was first reported by TMZ. In many ways, Hardwick was the heart and soul behind the ever-popular animated series that originally ran for 13 total seasons, from 1997 to 2010. /Film previously reported earlier this year that a new revival series of "King of the Hill" was in the works with much of the original cast returning to reprise their roles. Between the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, however, it's unclear whether Hardwick or the rest of the cast had recorded any new voice performances for the series.

When it came to primetime adult animated sitcoms of the '90s and early '00s, "King of the Hill" was somewhat of an outlier. It was steeped in suburban realism, trusting the audience to find the humor in co-creator Mike Judge's observational, mundane sensibility. While the show's contemporaries like "Family Guy" or "The Simpsons" (which sparked competition with the show over its use of guest stars) embraced a cartoony wackiness, "King of the Hill" adopted a relaxed, comfortable tone. And who better to command that tone than a character like Hank Hill (Judge)?
For one thing, Hank was an unusual choice to lead a sitcom. Where "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy" made a point of their lead patriarchs being very dumb and oblivious, Hank was smart and competent. Superficially, he probably looked a little boring, and there was little about Hank that would seem to lend itself to comedy.

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The series: "King of the Hill"
Where you can stream it: Hulu
The Pitch: There are quite a few working class animated TV families, the descendants of "The Simpsons" and live-action sitcoms like "All in the Family." Each offers a different taste of family life in America: the Belchers of "Bob's Burgers" are coastal city dwellers, while the Simpsons are from somewhere in middle America, living in a town called Springfield. (There are Springfields in almost every state in the United States. Seriously.)
"King of the Hill" nails a specific setting perfectly, however: the fictional town of Arlen, Texas. They say that everything is bigger in Texas, and that can unfortunately include stereotypes, which "King of the Hill" both embraces...

In a somewhat surprising move, the Fox network has decided to cancel one of the staples of its Sunday night line-up. On the eve of Halloween, the King of the Hill TV show has been cancelled after 13 seasons on the air.
King of the Hill follows the animated adventures of the Hill family from the small town of Arlen, Texas. The family's patriarch, Hank (Mike Judge), is a propane salesman who's obsessed with his lawn and the Dallas Cowboys. His well-meaning wife Peggy (Kathy Najimy) holds several part-time jobs and together, they raise their husky teenage son, Bobby (Pamela Adlon). Other characters include niece Luanne (Brittany Murphy), neighbor Bill (Stephen Root), and conspiracy-lover Dale (Johnny Hardwick).
The series debuted on January 12, 1997 on Fox and quickly became a staple of the network's animation line-up. Having survived to produce over 240 episodes, King has become the second longest-running animated series, following The Simpsons.

Thirteen has proven not-so-lucky for Fox's veteran animated comedy "King of the Hill."
After several previous brushes with cancellation, the network has opted not to renew the series beyond its current 13th season.
In April, Fox picked up 13 more episodes from the 20th Century Fox TV-produced show, which are wrapping production.
A lot has changed since "King of the Hill" premiered in 1997. Its creators Greg Daniels and Mike Judge have moved on to other projects -- Daniels developed and is running NBC's "The Office," and Judge has a new animated series, "The Goode Family," launching on ABC in midseason.
Judge had continued to voice the central character on the toon comedy, alongside voiceover cast members Kathy Najimy, Pamela Adlon, Brittany Murphy, Tom Petty, Johnny Hardwick and Stephen Root.
"Hill" has been exec produced by Judge, Daniels, John Altschuler, Dave Krinsky, Michael Rotenberg, Howard Klein, Jim Dauterive and Garland Testa.
