Plus, a plethora of post-credit scenes and news about vol. 3
There are still a couple of weeks before James Gunn releases Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, but recently the film was screened for the press and despite a review embargo being in place, some took to Twitter to share their immediate reactions. The overall assessment? Check it for yourself:
Angie J. Han of Mashable called it “the McU at its very best,” while Mike Ryan at Uproxx says the film is “very fun” and “Baby Groot steals the show.” Germain Lussier of Gizmodo and io9 describes the film as “filled with tons of surprises and an unexpected amount of emotion,” and Anna Klassen of Bustle calls it “action-packed” with “even more classic 70s/early 80s music cues.”
Furthermore, when one member of the press revealed there’s not one, not two, not even three but four post-credit scenes, Gunn himself joined the conversation to reveal there...

Plus: Netflix gets some new talent, a post roundup and five perfect shots.
It’s been three years since director Jennifer Kent released The Babadook, and in all that time I still haven’t gotten a good night sleep, either because I was terrified said titular entity might be lurking in the shadows, or because I was wondering when and what Kent’s next project would be. A year or so ago she started dropping some hints, but as of a press release issued yesterday, we now have all the gory and glorious details.
The film is called The Nightingale — I’ve already got chills — and it sounds like we’re in for another dark thriller, albeit a little more grounded in reality. Dig the synopsis:
Set in Tasmania in 1825, The Nightingale follows a beautiful 21-year-old Irish female convict who witnesses the brutal murder of her husband and baby by her soldier master and his cronies. Unable...

The CW’s DC TV offerings return next week, but the network has today released the official descriptions for the episodes of Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl which will air the week beginning February 6th. There aren’t too many major reveals here, but each of them sounds pretty fun in their own way.
First up is Supergirl. In an episode titled “The Martian Chronicles,” it sounds like we should expect the Girl of Steel to find herself caught in a crossfire between Martian Manhunter and the White Martians, the villainous alien race who wiped his people (and family) out on Mars.
White Martians Attack The Deo — Armek (guest star Terrell Tilford), a White Martian, descends on National City intent on taking M’gann (guest star Sharon Leal) back to Mars to face her punishment as a traitor. Hank (David Harewood) and Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) determine the...

Season four of Arrow has taken things in a very unexpected direction by making Malcolm Merlyn the primary antagonist, the same role he played in the show’s first season. Having the Dark Archer buddy up with Oliver after everything he’s done never quite rang true, so it’s actually been pretty good to see him go back down this villainous route.
However, proving that he shouldn’t be underestimated is Damien Darhk, and as you can see in the gallery above, he’s looking to get out from behind bars in order to resume his own plan. He’ll actually be getting some help from Malcolm this time around though, who’s clearly realized that taking down Green Arrow will be much easier with an ally as powerful as Darhk.
For more details on what to expect from “Eleven-Fifty-Nine,” here’s the official synopsis:...

Is this not the most brilliant screenplay from 2015? Alex Garland assembles a perfect fable about robots, artificial intelligence and the hubris of a software genius who thinks he's a God. Garland's direction is tops as well, as is the acting of Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander. When did I realize I was seeing a killer diller Sci-fi winner? The Flash, Season 2, Episode 10, “Potential Energy”
Written by Bryan Q. Miller
Directed by Rob Hardy
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm (Et) on The CW
When The Flash’s second season premiered, the series was returning from one of the year’s most exciting cliffhangers on television, and the first episode back handled the resolution to that cliffhanger with intelligence and heart. Although network seasons aren’t always structured so that the final episode of the calendar year is a midseason “finale” (in the sense of being a clearly-defined midpoint in the narrative arc), more and more writing teams are working towards that idea. And while The Flash isn’t coming back to television in 2016 with a wormhole to deal with, The CW’s hit show still finished 2015 with a significant issue: what is to be done with Patty Spivot?
Among the many things The Flash does right is how the story...

The CW has released the first clip from the midseason premiere of The Flash, and while it’s fairly brief, it does at least give us an idea of the kind of dynamic we should expect to see between Joe West and his newly discovered son, Wally. Played by Keiynan Lonsdale, the comic book version of the character held the mantle of The Flash for over two decades, but it’s not yet clear what kind of role he’ll play in the CW series.
For the time being, the character building a relationship with his father and sister will no doubt be the focus, and it’s going to be very interesting to see how that plays out. Based on the clip above, it definitely seems as if there’s some tension between Joe and Wally, and if the character is set to become a speedster, it probably isn...

In just a few short weeks, our wait for new episodes of The Flash and Arrow will be over when their mid-season premieres arrive on the small screen. Sure, we’ve seen promo videos here and there, but it’s always nice to get the official synopses that may provide even more clues as to where the next episodes may go.
In the tenth episode of Season 2 of The Flash, which is titled “Potential Energy,” Barry struggles with the decision of revealing his secret identity to his gal pal, Patty Spivot. Whether or not to reveal that you’re a superpowered vigilante to your significant other seems to be the eternal struggle for super heroes. The future Kid Flash, Wally West, will also get some screen time as he gets to know his long lost family.

Alright, so last we left off with Barry and the gang, it was Christmas and a surprise guest arrived at the door. The revelation of Wally West by far was the coolest news to come to the series all season, and I'm really excited for what this means in the long run! Alright, so last we left off with Barry and the gang, it was Christmas and a surprise guest arrived at the door. The revelation of Wally West by far was the coolest news to come to the series all season, and I'm really excited for what this means in the long run! The series depicting the epic early American journey of Meriwether Lewis (Casey Affleck) and William Clark (Matthias Schoenaerts) is back on schedule, Deadline reports. In early August production was halted due to "creative" and "weather-related" reasons, and director John Curran and director of photography Rob Hardy were taken off the project. Now it is set to resume filming in the spring in Calgary with the original cast, though this Plan B, Playtone and Class 5 co-production is still shopping for a director. Curran was to be HBO's latest filmmaker turned television-maker. HBO has tussled with uncompromising filmmakers before, including most recently David Fincher, who had a rash of projects fall off the network. At the time of the shut down, it was revealed both director John Curran and director of photography Rob Hardy are leaving the production which had a rough time both with internal issues and weather-related factors. In a statement to Deadline, the network says:

HBO's high-profile "Lewis and Clark" six-part mini-series has shut down production in Canada and is currently looking for a new director after the departure of John Curran almost two months after filming began in Alberta, Canada.
Based on Stephen Ambrose's 1997 book "Undaunted Courage," Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenaerts star in the series about the famed 19th century explorers who went on a remarkable three-year journey to map the western United States.
Both Curran, who co-wrote the mini, and the mini's cinematographer Rob Hardy are out of the project for "creative reasons". In fact the whole production has paused and there's no word as yet when filming will resume, but weather-related factors have also reportedly had an impact.
The project is being produced by Tom Hanks' Playtone, Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment and National Geographic Studios.

Ex MacHina was a classy slice of cerebral sci-fi with a literary-cinematic heritage stretching back through Blade Runner and Metropolis to Frankenstein. Director Alex Garland made an impressive debut behind camera, effectively directing with remote, minimal style. Swedish actress Alicia Vikander excelled in the film’s most important role as the sleek, sexy robot who struggles to come to terms with her humanity (or lack of it), giving a performance more about intuition and gesture than dialogue. The only real special effect in the film was the presentation of Ava with a human face, but mostly composed of wires and a partly transparent body, and it was seamless. An electro soundtrack by Geoff Barrow added to the retro sci-fi air of Ex MacHina, a terrific film. Now, Ex MacHina is available on DVD and We Are Movie Geeks wants to give away three copies. Not only that, we want to...

Alex Garland’s Ex Machina is one of the best films of the year and by far one of the directorial debut standouts for 2015. The film has an incredibly minimalist look and stark colors that define the mood and the sci-fi creepiness of it all. But Garland didn’t get that by accident. As observed by Film Drunk Love in this video essay, cinematographer Rob Hardy carefully frames the robot Ava (Alicia Vikander) and Caleb (Domnhall Gleeson) in submissive and dominant ways to visually communicate who is in control of the other. Subtle touches like the angle of the camera or the two-faced reflection say so much about why the film works as well as it does. Now I just need an analysis of why Oscar Isaac’s impromptu dance number is so great.
Watch the video essay above, but be warned: there are spoilers for the whole film.

Two of our favorite movies of the year so far are Alex Garland's "Ex Machina" and Peter Strickland's "The Duke Of Burgundy," and both directors have taken a bit of time between their next features to dip their toes into the music video world for the first time. For <Kaeb —Portishead instrumentalist Geoff Barrow's "alter ego" spinoff band from his side project Beak> —Garland co-directed "When We Fall" with "Ex Machina" director of photography Rob Hardy, which explains the video's gritty aesthetic. "If the band records something which feels too comfortable with itself, they reject it. Rob Hardy, Sonoya Mizuno, Erline O'Donovan and I tried to make the video for 'When We Fall' on their aesthetic terms: shot one afternoon on an iPhone, held up to the viewfinder of an old Nikon Slr, then cut as instinctively as possible," he told Pitchfork. Ex Machina may not be quite as profound an “ideas” movie as writer-director Alex Garland thinks it is, but I’m willing to cut it some slack for at least taking the shot. Garland’s film is intimate and intensely character-driven, with essentially only three main characters bouncing off each other in a very confined space. The film raises some interesting questions about human emotion, our desire to control it and what happens when we get that control. But most importantly it’s a science-fiction movie, given a wide release and starring some notable actors. It’s refreshing to see a mainstream sci-fi flick that doesn’t follow Hollywood’s Star Wars-on-crack approach, throwing as much money as possible at creating as many explosions and spaceships and eye-popping creatures as possible. For that reason it’s easier to forgive Ex Machina’s shortcomings and celebrate its many strengths.

In the 1950s, Alan Turing developed the Turing Test, a series of questions designed to determine whether an unseen artificial entity was conscious; the goal being to convince the interviewer that with whom they were communicating was indistinguishable from human. Suffice to say, it can be argued, the test is yet to be passed. Then in the 1960s, sci-fi author Isaac Asimov developed his Three Laws of Robotics, dictating how an artificially intelligent being could exist while basically remaining subservient to humankind.
Now, as we journey deeper into the 21st century, the idea of someone actually creating an artificially intelligent consciousness feels more and more like an actual inevitability. From Deep Blue to Watson to the increasing influence of AI in popular culture, we are becoming more aware of the reality of it every day. But should we be concerned about artificial intelligence beyond mere consciousness and subservience? Alex Garland...

Interesting development, roughly 9 months after news of the dissolving of Rainforest Films was made public, with Will Packer inking a 3-year first-look production agreement with Universal Pictures, that would see the producer develop new scripted projects for the studio under his newly formed Will Packer Productions banner. The obvious question I had at the time of the above announcements was what it meant for the Rainforest Films Banner, and Packer's partner Rob Hardy - a company responsible for films like "Takers," "Stomp The Yard," "This Christmas," "Obsessed," "Think Like A Man," and others. Jussie Smollett is howling with laughter. We’re discussing Season 1 of Fox’s ratings juggernaut Empire, and I’ve blurted out an (admittedly) ridiculous question: Is there any way to restore the trust between Smollett’s character, the newly out-and-proud gay R&B singer Jamal Lyon, and his disapproving father Lucious (Terrence Howard)? (Keep in mind, of course, that last week Lucious confessed he’s the biological father of Lola, the little girl Jamal thought he’d conceived with his ex-wife Olivia.)

The Originals, Season 2, Episode 10, “Gonna Set Your Flag on Fire”
Written by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson

Airs Mondays at 8pm Est on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Finn traps Klaus’s vampires and the werewolves under one roof, Hayley and Jackson move forward with their impending marriage, Cami begins Elijah’s therapy, Rebekah remains trapped in an asylum, and Esther makes her choice.
After such a seemingly-long winter hiatus, The Originals is finally back; unfortunately, the premiere is a decidedly weak opening in the wake of such an excellent midseason finale. The episode isn’t all bad–Cami and Elijah’s brief trivia match is a definite highlight–but the episode is bogged down by some unexpectedly cheap ploys and uncharacteristic character moments.
