Emerging and aspiring actors looking to launch into the next phase of their careers are being encouraged to apply for this year’s American Arts Film and Television Academy (Aafta) Carmen Duncan Scholarship.
Named after the late Australian actress and activist, the initiative offers a path to the US market for acting talent via targeted packages worth more than Usd$25,000.
They include online and in-person training on various aspects of the industry, as well as help with visas and immigration services.
Duncan blazed a trail for Australian actors in the US during the ’80s, portraying Iris Carrington Wheeler on the daytime soap opera Another World, a role for which she was honoured not only with nominations for the Soap Opera Awards but also an Emmy nomination.
She passed away in February 2019 at the age of 76 after a battle with gynaecological cancer.
This will be the third year the scholarship has been run,...

Iron Man 3 is one of the most panned Marvel movies on there, but here’s why it doesn’t deserve its awful reputation.
“I’m so sorry that everyone on the internet has decided to have the worst opinions when it comes to Marvel movies, but while talking about the worst movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you best keep Iron Man 3 out ya mouth. Easily the best movie in the Iron Man trilogy, I think that Iron Man 3 gets a bad rap because it pushed the envelope, which then informed movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier in the emotional impact these situations have on their characters.”

Daniel Radcliffe’s awful choices of acting roles have some asking the question: Is he trying to make people hate him?

Gary Conway.
One of Australia’s most respected and prolific TV directors who started his career at Crawford Productions in the 1960s, Gary Conway died on Friday in a hospice in Melbourne, aged 73.
Conway directed nearly 800 episodes of Neigbours, beginning in 1988, and worked on the Fremantle show until late last year when he was forced to stop after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
“Gary was a great mate to me and to many, many others,” his friend and long-time colleague, composer Garry (Sam) Hardman tells If.
“Gary started at Crawford’s a couple of years before I did. I met him when I started with the company in 1965. There were 45 people on staff back then and Gary was the company’s art department.
“He would make up the credit cards for Homicide and Hunter as well as the ‘fake signs” for filming that could turn an ordinary office building into a federal bank.

How terrible to be the solitary vampire; cursed to walk the earth alone, sleepless nights interrupted by an insatiable blood lust, no one to go shopping with. It just doesn’t seem like the most sociable of lifestyle choices. This would be the case for most of horror’s filmdom until Thirst (1979), a quirky Australian blend of political satire and nightmarish imagery that presents a society of bloodsuckers intent on branding long before it entered the consciousness.
Released by New Line Cinema in late September, Thirst traipsed its way through the market place of grindhouse and drive-ins before popping up on VHS, where a young horror fiend (me) eagerly lapped up everything coming out by the nascent home video realm. What did the ten year old think? Well, not much at the time; he found it well made but slow. The man-child before you has the same thoughts, except time has brought me patience,...

Before Samuel L. Jackson, there was "Baywatch" actor David Hasselhoff delivering a 'Jack Burton' comic book performance in "Battlestar Galactica" director Rod Hardy's 1998 TV movie, "Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.", written by David Goyer ("The Dark Knight"), based on the Marvel Comics character:
"I was the first 'Nick Fury'", said Hasselhoff.
"...'Nick Fury', retired, is approached to return to duty to take down agents of the terrorist organization 'Hydra', led by the children of 'Baron Wolfgang von Strucker', an old enemy of his. Hydra has reconstituted a pathogen known as the 'Death's Head' virus, and threatens to attack Manhattan with it, barring payment of Us $1 billion..."
"Stan Lee put me in that. Came on the set and told me all about Nick," said Hasselhoff.
"He said 'You're the ultimate Nick Fury'. He gave me the greatest compliment ever.

Producer Antony I. Ginnane plans to be staying busy on the remake scene. He was the man behind Patrick and its remake Patrick: Evil Awakens, and now he's digging up two more of his films, The Survivor and Thirst to get the redux treatment.
The news comes via Screen Daily. “Genre – particularly thrillers, sci-fi and action – never really dates,” said Ginnane. “Sales agents and international buyers like something that has been previously tested, has cult resonance and is made for a price. In some cases we are selling to the children of the guys who bought the originals.”
Rod Hardy-directed 1979's Thirst. The descendant of Elizabeth Bathory is abducted by a cult of self-proclaimed supermen who achieve this state of superiority by drinking from the "blood cows" (read: people) kept at the "dairy farm", and they try to get her to join them.
David Hemmings directed the 1981 flick, The Survivor.

Burn Notice: Season 4
Stars: Jeffrey Donovan, Bruce Campbell, Gabrielle Anwar, Sharon Gless | Directed by Paul Holahan, Kevin Bray, Colin Bucksey, Rod Hardy
As a newcomer to the Burn Notice series it may have been strange to start at season four but sometimes it’s a good way to start on shows like this. It allows people to see if it’s easy to get into and not too complicated, and also gives you a chance to start watching when a show should be in its stride and be confident in telling an enjoyable storyline with well-established characters.
Season four of Burn Notice starts off with Michael (the main character of the show) trying to uncover who helped some guy called Simon to escape at the end of season three. This is all you need to know really as in the first episode the action hits the ground running. From...

Australia may not have an overabundance of horror films but they’ve managed to produce some quality genre pictures. The recent success of the acclaimed documentary Not Quite Hollywood has shed light on a much overlooked aspect of Aussie genre filmmaking, from lowbrow slashers to twisted thrillers and gross-out horror comedies. Back in the 70′s a number of prominent filmmakers began to develop a film movement that would eventually see the successes of such films as Mad Max and The Last Wave. It was during this time that Australian cinema as a whole experienced resurgence due to increased governmental funding and eventually gave way to what international film critics termed the “Australian New Wave” or the “Golden Age of Australian cinema”.

After nearly a decade of playing only one character, we're about to find out if Daniel Radcliffe can take on a role that isn't Harry Potter. Granted, he starred in Rod Hardy's indie drama December Boys back in 2007, but this will be his first attempt to carry a high profile film post-Potter, and at first glance, The Woman in Black almost looks like it could be set in the Harry Potter universe. In truth, it is a British horror / thriller based on a novel by Susan Hill, and a popular ghost story that has been previously adapted into a TV movie and a stage play. This new version is being directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake) and produced by Hammer Films. Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps, a lawyer who is called to a remote village to deal the estate of a reclusive widow who has recently passed away. She lived...

Despite the apparent serious nature of the October 29 new episode of Supernatural (as evidence in the promo and a sneak peek we previously posted), it looks like we’ll be getting some humor, as you can see in the sneak peek from Canada’s Space Channel below. Oh, Bobby, can you ever fail to make us laugh? Likely not. Although, truth be told, I always suspected there was more to Bobby than meets the eye. After all, a guy who spends that much time at home has to have some extra-curricular activities. And you just know they went beyond what we saw in “Weekend at Bobby’s”. Of course Bobby watches horrible reality shows and gets pedicures. Only Jim Beaver could sell it like that.

If you watched last week’s episode of Supernatural, then you know something is seriously wrong with Sam (if you missed it, read our recap here). On the October 29 new episode, we are hopefully going to get closer to understanding what’s going on with Sam. Dean, no longer a vampire and deeply suspicious of his brother, seeks help from both Bobby and Cas to discover what’s going on. When people are cursed with having to tell the truth, he also demands answers from Sam himself.
We’ve already posted promo photos and a trailer for the upcoming episode and now The CW has released a sneak peek. It looks like Dean is back to dealing with stress with his old proven methods – drinking excessively, making threats and being broody.

Did you miss tonight’s episode? If so, read our recap and review. If you didn’t miss it, then you probably managed to catch the rather long “Soon” montage that we got, which actually features clips from the next three episodes of the season. In the October 15 episode, Bobby and Rufus reappear, and much of the episode centers around Bobby and his deal with Crowley over his soul. Bobby runs into some trouble trying to get Crowley to honor his promise to return the soul he bargained away in the final days of the Apocalypse. After that, we’ll see Supernatural take a shot at the recent vampire popularity and then cracks in the brothers’ relationship will show again when they go on a search for the Truth.

This season a brand new agent took over the small screen.Part Sydney Bristow on Alias, part Clarie Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, Annie Walker(played by Piper Perabo) has been kicking butt and winning viewers’ hearts formonths.
Covert Affairs fans will be sad tosee the two-hour finale come tonight. But they won’t be disappointed. It’s notsurprising with an Executive Producer like Doug Liman on the case. After all,he’s a big screen action movie master—having directed The Bourne Identity and Mr.& Mrs. Smith.
In a conference call interview Liman spoke about developing theseries, casting the stars, doing research at the CIA, and what’s next for himbeyond the show.
Catch the season finale of Covert Affairs tonight at 10:00 pm on USA.

Welcome to the first installment of a new column here at Fangoria.com, Back Catalogue. Sometimes the Catalogue will cover new releases of older films, and sometimes it will feature exactly what the title implies, back catalogue items. These will normally be from smaller specialty labels that have formed the backbone of the horror fans ability to build a truly representative collection of their favorite films. I'm proud to start this column back up after a two year hiatus and promise to work hard to recommend films that you're in danger of forgetting about, have maybe never heard of, or that might be ready to go out of print.
I'm also proud that the first edition of Catalogue is all about Synapse Films. Anybody who goes to conventions and has stopped by the Synapse table has not only seen first hand the amazing array of labor of love releases and Special Editions they produce,...

Daniel Radcliffe has signed on to star in December Boys, his first project outside the Harry Potter franchise that brought him worldwide fame. The long-nurtured project, based on the novel of the same title by Michael Noonan, revolves around four young orphan boys in 1960s Australia. Having all but given up hope of ever being adopted, the tight-knit friends are on a seaside holiday one summer when they find themselves competing for a place in the home and family they all long for. Los Angeles-based television director Rod Hardy (The Practice) will return to his Australian homeland to direct the film, and Richard Becker (The Real Macaw), managing director of entertainment production and distribution outfit the Becker Group, will produce. The screenplay was adapted by Marc Rosenberg (Serpent's Lair).

SYDNEY -- Australia's principal funding agency, Film Finance Corporation Australia, said Wednesday that it is backing two new feature films. The first, December Boys, based on Michael Noonan's book of the same name, is described as a poignant tale of four young orphan boys in the 1960s. Rod Hardy will direct, with Richard Becker producing. Sales and distribution are being handled by REP, MBM and Aura Entertainment. The second approval is for a low-budget thriller, Wolf Creek, which will be shot digitally by first-time feature writer-director Greg McLean and produced by David Lightfoot. The story is loosely based on real-life events of two years ago that saw British backpacker Peter Falconio killed in the Australian outback while his girlfriend managed a narrow escape. The film will be produced in association with Mushroom Pictures and Arclight Films. The two companies also will oversee sales and distribution.
