From the Forties through the mid-Seventies Nashville was staking its claim as Music City, developing the hybrid of country and pop known as the Nashville Sound. At the same time, on the West Coast, the thriving California honky-tonks gave birth to what would be termed the Bakersfield Sound, so named for the town in the southern San Joaquin Valley that would gift country music with two of its most iconic artists: Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. On August 9th, the music that melded honky-tonk twang with rock & roll instrumentation will...

A mainstream songwriter and recording artist since the Fifties, Freddie Hart’s career had gotten so stagnant by the July 1971 release of “Easy Loving” that initial slow sales might have cost him his contract with Capitol Records. But it turned out that Hart, who died October 26th at the age of 91, played a winning hand right as the game was changing from the squeaky clean Nashville Sound to the sexually charged material of Charlie Rich and Conway Twitty.

Mellow-voiced singer and prolific songwriter Freddie Hart, whose self-penned single “Easy Loving” was one of the biggest crossover hits of the early Seventies, died Saturday in Burbank, California. He was 91.
In addition to winning the Acm award for Song of the Year in 1971, “Easy Loving” was a Top 20 hit on the pop chart, a million-seller and earned Hart two Grammy nominations and the first of two consecutive Cma Song of the Year honors in 1971. Over the next two years, he would reach Number One on the country chart five additional times,...

I (like many of you, I imagine) have been kind of emotionally wrung out by today's events.
As Hawaii Five-0 time drew closer and closer, I knew that I was on a hair-trigger - all I needed was one Danny monologue about how much he loves his daughter, one speech about the real meaning of duty and honor or probably just even McGarrett making a sad face... and the waterworks were going to flow in full force.
And then, I got "Olelo Pa'a (The Promise)," not only a beautifully shot mini-action movie, and my favorite episode of Hawaii Five-0 Season 3 so far, but an emotionally-wrenching five-hankie weeper.
Within this self-contained gem of an episode, the impact of McGarrett's pre-5-0 existence on his current life was rendered wonderfully and compellingly, with pacing and scene set-ups (not to mention a boatload of dramatic Hawaii Five-0 quotes) that felt more like elements...

Since Mondays are just the worst, we here at Zap2it have decided to give your week a much-needed wake-up call with 10 TV teasers -- just to remind you that when the work day is over, your DVR waits to welcome you home.
This week, our Monday Kickstart includes more behind-the-scenes info from the "Vampire Diaries" spinoff, a missing body on "Hawaii Five-0," and the hot new guy on "Awkward."
"Nurse Jackie": We've already seen that new resident Dr. Carrie Roman isn't shy about having sex in public places, but one of her upcoming partners could surprise you. She and Coop start hooking up on a regular basis, and there's even a sex tape involved (but it's not exactly what you would expect in a post-Kim Kardashian era).
"Awkward": Season 3 finally premieres tomorrow night -- and in the second back-to-back episode, you'll meet Jenna's new love interest,...
