BBC Four biopic Burton And Taylor comes highly recommended to film fans. Here's Juliette's review...
This review contains spoilers.
Burton and Taylor is an intimate new feature-length drama from BBC4, focusing on one of Hollywood’s most (in)famous love affairs, that between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The film traces the story of the last time the two worked together, on a critically lambasted theatrical tour of Noël Coward’s play Private Lives, as they remember and reassess their relationship.
The titular superstars are magnificently played by Dominic West and Helena Bonham Carter. Both succeed in walking the fine line between impersonation and acting. Just as you might start to think they’ve slipped away from the very familiar faces they’re playing, West will erupt into a towering rage or Bonham Carter will assume a pose of taught dignity or throw a...

As a new BBC4 drama examines the turbulent relationship between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, we take a look at how it played out in the pages of the Guardian and Observer
Though Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were once one of Hollywood's hottest couples, their relationship was controversial from the start. When they met on the set of Cleopatra in 1962, they were both married to other people, and their 'immoral' behaviour so incensed the film's producers, Twentieth Century Fox, that the company sued the couple for $50m, while the Us State Department considered revoking Burton's work visa. Cleopatra opened to poor reviews, although Alistair Cooke blamed that on snobbery.
Despite all the drama, their wedding in March 1964 barely warranted a mention on the Guardian's front page. Theirs was a tempestuous marriage. In an article for the Observer Review in 1971, Burton summed up their bond, writing: "I love Elizabeth to the point of idolatry.

Hollywood lost a legend when 79 year-old Elizabeth Taylor passed away in March this year, and it was only a matter of time before her story was optioned for the retelling. Thankfully that task has been handed to Martin Scorsese, as Deadline reports that the historically inclined director will be bringing the actress' legendary romance with sometimes co-star Richard Burton to the big screen for Paramount. No writer has been attached to the project just yet, but the studio is seeking the cooperation of the Liz Taylor estate, having already secured a rights agreement with Burton's and a blessing from his widow Sally Hay Burton. The inspiration for the adaptation of the stars' torrid and turbulent romance is the Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger book, Furious Love &ndash...

Martin Scorsese is a serious student of film history. And he’s also fascinated by the world of talented types who made it. Over the years, he’s tried to get films about Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra on screen (he’s still working on the latter) and now it appears that he’s considering tackling the love affair between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.Paramount is busy putting together the project as a film for him to direct, buying up the rights to Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger’s book Furious Love, which focuses on the tempestuous relationship sparked between the actors when they worked together on 1963's Cleopatra. Their passion led to two marriages breaking up and the pair themselves making two trips to the altar. The studio has won a rights agreement with Burton’s estate, with widow Sally Hay Burton planning to allow access to his library for research purposes.

Dame Elizabeth Taylor surrounds herself with pictures of Richard Burton - and would marry her ex-husband for a third time if he was still alive.
The pair fell in love while filming 1963's Cleopatra and wed just 12 months later before Burton's drinking eventually led to a divorce in 1974.
The Hollywood couple couldn't keep away from one another and tied the knot once again less than a year later - before ending the union after just 11 months.
Burton died in 1984 of a brain haemorrhage and although his widow Sally Hay banned Taylor from his funeral, the 77-year-old actress is still in love with him, according to Burton's niece Sian Owen.
Owen explains, "I was in America last summer and I went to see Elizabeth. In the house in Bel Air I saw pictures of Uncle Rich everywhere and it's a picture of uncle Rich that's by her bed still.
"She still says that had he lived that they'd be back together once again - that it would have been third time lucky. They were mad about each other.
"She believes that in the last years in their lives when everything had been toned down with the drinking and everything else, she believes that they'd be together. She's certain of that, they were soulmates."...
