Associated Press journalist Linda Deutsch was already a legendary court reporter when O.J. Simpson stood trial for killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. She’d covered high-profile criminal legal proceedings involving everyone from Charles Manson and Patty Hearst to Sirhan Sirhan and the “Night Stalker,” Richard Ramirez.
But Judge Lance Ito designated Deutsch the trial’s pool reporter and she soon became a familiar face to millions as a trusted TV commentator providing context for the case. Simpson himself approved of her coverage and, after he was acquitted, she became his go-to media contact for exclusive interviews in the ensuing decades.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Deutsch, who retired in 2014, after the Simpson family announced the Heisman winner turned actor and pitchman died on April 10.
You’ve said you never decided if Simpson was guilty. Was that a personal decision or a professional one?

Paul Schrader is now in his “post-dying” era.
After the Oscar-winning screenwriter shared his health ailments during the pandemic, Schrader recently revealed a new script he is working on. Schrader teased the project in a Q&a following a screening of “Patty Hearst” at the Roxy Cinema in New York City, hosted by Screen Slate (in the below video).
“I was sort of saturated with dying at that time,” Schrader said of his upcoming “Oh, Canada” adaptation of late friend and author Russell Banks’ final 2021 novel “Foregone.” “I had been to the hospital multiple times during Covid. Friends had been dying; they still are dying. And I thought, well, geez, if you’re going to make a film about dying, you better hurry up. And so I did it.”
Schrader added, “I feel like it went quite well, so now I’ll make a post-dying film.”

Zendaya stunned crowds in a chrome bodysuit pulled from a 1995 Mugler Couture collection for the Dune: Part 2 world premiere in London on Thursday.
The futuristic look, befitting of the movie in which Zendaya stars, featured shiny sleeves, gloves and pants set over clear plastic. She paired the outfit with a heavy diamond necklace.
Per Vogue, Mugler’s original Fall/Winter show “was memorable more for its performance by James Brown; its cameos by the likes of Tippi Hedren, Patty Hearst, and Veruschka; and its rather liberal use of fetishistic latex.” The description goes on to describe the collection as a “frightening and tantalizing image for the dawn of the Internet age, and a fitting end for this list of the nineties’ most unforgettable fashion shows.”

Ruth Seymour, the hard-driving broadcast pioneer who transformed Kcrw into a public radio powerhouse during her 32-year run at what was a sleepy Santa Monica-based station, died Friday. She was 88.
Seymour died after a long illness at her home in Santa Monica, former Kcrw producer/publicity director Sarah Spitz announced.
The Bronx-born Seymour joined the FM station in 1977 as a consultant and became general manager a few months later. Her mission statement for Kcrw was “to matter,” and she built it to be “singular, idiosyncratic, daring, independent, smart and compelling” — six words she employed over and over in her fundraising letters and on-air subscription drives.
During her tenure, Kcrw became the West Coast flagship station for National Public Radio and launched a mix of news, talk, music, current affairs and cultural programming that included the signature music show Morning Becomes Eclectic; Which Way L.A.?, hosted by Warren Olney in the wake of the 1992 L.

The tale begins with a crime that left everyone baffled. In July 1976, a school bus carrying 26 children (and one driver) was hijacked in the sleepy Central California town of Chowchilla. The kidnap victims were taken to two vans, driven to an abandoned rock quarry, led off the bus, and essentially buried alive in an underground compartment full of mattresses. Things like that just didn’t happen in a town like this.
Seventies California was loaded with bad juju, from the Zodiac Killer to the Patty Hearst kidnapping to Jim Jones.

What made the original "Frasier" series so good? It's a question we at /Film have been feverishly searching for answers to in light of Paramount+'s release of the "Frasier" revival, which is quite mixed, if it's the original series you're holding it to as a standard. There aren't as many jokes per minute, the understanding of its central character isn't always perfect, and they're only just figuring out which elements from the original series were okay to discard, and which needed to be in the mix for the cake to come out tasty.
One of the shakier aspects of this calculus has been the revival's handling of its character dynamics. This is a fully defensible area of weakness -- character dynamics are both the hardest aspect of sitcoms to iron out and the singular aspect that makes them soar or sink. Opinions vary, but if you ask for mine,...

Netflix turned down a sequel for Oscar-winning film “L.A. Confidential” — with one executive allegedly falling asleep during the pitch meeting.
Screenwriter Brian Helgeland claimed to Deadline during a Toronto International Film Festival interview (below) that a Netflix exec nodded off while Helgeland was presenting the 1970s-set film pitch to the streaming platform.
“[Author] James Ellroy and I worked out an elaborate pitch for ‘L.A. Confidential 2’ that takes place during the Patty Hearst [era], when the Symbionese Liberation Army came down to L.A., and we had Guy Pearce attached and Russell [Crowe] and Chadwick Boseman playing a young cop working for Mayor Bradley,” Helgeland said. “We pitched it to everyone. We had to go to Warner Bros. first and Warner Bros. is like, ‘We don’t make movies like this.'”
The “Mystic River” scribe continued, “Ellroy is a performance artist and he would do the pitch; and it was the most amazing pitch.

L.A. Confidential sequel: Brian Helgeland presented a pitch that had a Netflix exec opting for a nap
L.A. Confidential sits proudly on countless Top 10 lists, with film buffs often celebrating the crime drama’s clever script, outstanding performances, and classic approach to mystery. Hollywood should be eager to green-light an L.A. Confidential sequel pitch, right? Well, a new report from Deadline says L.A. Confidential writer Brian Helgeland and original author James Ellroy presented a follow-up to the 2017 hit, and no one was interested.
“James Ellroy and I worked out an elaborate pitch for L.A. L.A. Confidential Oscar-winning scribe Brian Helgeland had cracked a sequel with the original author James Ellroy to the City of Angels film noir — but no one bit, not even the pic’s original studio, Warner Bros.
Helgeland shared his war story on pitching the sequel around town in Deadline’s Toronto Studio. The first L.A. Confidential won Helgeland an Adapted Screenplay Oscar as well as a Supporting Actress Oscar for Kim Basinger. The pic, directed by the late Curtis Hanson, was nominated for nine Oscars including Best Picture.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Madonna was due to perform one of the final shows on her Drowned World Tour at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. By noon, the show had been rescheduled and the world had changed irrevocably.
After completing the tour, she wasted little time before getting straight back in the studio with producer Mirwais, with whom she had created most of 2000’s Music. Shaken by 9/11, Madonna was in a period of introspection, telling reporters that fame and fortune had made her oblivious to the gruesome realities of the world.

Just one year after wowing Venice critics with The Card Counter, Paul Schrader returns to the world’s oldest film festival with the latest iteration of his self-styled “man alone in a room” stories, Master Gardener.
Like the signature character studies before it – Taxi Driver (Robert De Niro), American Gigolo (Richard Gere), Light Sleeper (Willem Dafoe), First Reformed (Ethan Hawke) and The Card Counter (Oscar Isaac) — Master Gardner begins, naturally, with a socially disaffected man, alone in a room. This time, Schrader’s anguished protagonist with a mysterious past is played by Joel Edgerton, who stars opposite Sigourney Weaver and Quintessa Swindell.
In a restrained and beguiling performance, Edgerton plays Narvel Roth, the meticulous horticulturist of Gracewood Gardens, the sprawling botanical estate of the wealthy dowager, Mrs. Haverhill, chillingly inhabited by Weaver. As we meet him, Narvel is as fastidiously devoted to tending...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about the Season 1 finale of Disney+/Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The season finale of Disney+/Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi wrapped its six-episode arc at what was in its entirety 4 hours and 40 minutes since its debut May 27.
You could essentially say that’s a very long Star Wars movie; 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi being the longest at 2 hours and 32 minutes.
Yes, hands down, this was a substantially improved series compared to The Book of Boba Fett, which had all its mojo stolen by The Mandalorian, living in that series’ shadow. And there were some intriguing elements occurring here in the franchise post 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.
But overall, was Obi-Wan Kenobi good enough? How did it elevate the Star Wars canon? Half of the time it wasn’t doing that, and half of the time it was.

Playing with Fire (1975)After becoming an international sensation in 1974 with her for-the-ages erotic turn as the titular Emmanuelle, Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel had the European art world at her feet. Sylvia grew up in Utrecht, the daughter of hoteliers, before shipping off to Catholic boarding school, attending dance school, and finally making her way to Paris. There, she found small parts in movies, eventually winning Miss TV Europe, a title that would land her an audition for Emmanuelle. The film changed Kristel’s life overnight, bringing her both opportunities to bolster her sex-symbol image and break away from it. A new home video collection from Cult Epics—which includes Julia, Playing with Fire, Pastorale 1943, and Mysteries—highlights the delicate balance Kristel found between her sexy persona and art-house aspirations.Julia is the closest Kristel would stay to her Emmanuelle role outside of that franchise, and would itself become a video-store...

Exclusive: La-based producer and sales firm Clear Horizon is lining up a historical drama about the Symbionese Liberation Army and its kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst.
Mizmoon will tell the story of Patricia ‘Mizmoon’ Soltisyk, the radicalized college co-ed who co-founded the terrorist group with her lesbian lover and an escaped convict with an obsession for guns and explosives. The group famously carried out bank robberies and murders in the 1970s and kidnapped heiress Hearst, the granddaughter of American publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. Soltysik was one of the six Sla members killed in a shootout with the Lapd in the mid 70s.
Clear Horizon founder David Brown, an executive producer on recent Julianne Moore-Michelle Williams adaptation After The Wedding, will make his directorial debut on the project, which he will produce with Cynthia Greening and Todd Lundbohm. Script comes from Greening and Tony Clarno, with revisions by Reinhard Denke.
The project is out to cast. Shoot is scheduled for Los Angeles later this year, cast and Covid-19 permitting. We are told the team is working off material from the public domain so have not needed to acquire life rights.
Patty Hearst and the Sla have spawned multiple screen projects over the years including a 1988 movie directed by Paul Schrader and a 2004 PBS doc by Robert Stone.
Brown recently produced The Undertaker’s Wife starring Shannyn Sossamon and John Brotherton and Chasing Nightmares starring Anne Heche and Graham McTavish.
Brown said, “Not only are we looking to push a number of our projects forward, but we want to get the word out to other filmmakers who have a need for funding or partnerships. We still have our doors open at this time.”...

As the story of Chloe Dykstra’s sexual assault allegations against Nerdist founder Chris Hardwick continues to unravel, his mother-in-law Patty Hearst — the famed granddaughter of publishing giant William Hearst and kidnapping victim/socialite — has tweeted her support for her son-in-law in her own special, ambiguous way.
“Beware the person who stabs you and then tells the world they’re the one who’s bleeding,” Hearst tweeted on Friday after Hardwick, who is married to her daughter Lydia Hearst, was accused of sexual assault by his ex-girlfriend Dykstra.
She also retweeted news stories of Hardwick denying the claims and replied to a TMZ story with the words “Bunny Boiler,” which many think is a reference to Fatal Attraction and a lowkey dig at Dykstra.
This comes after Dykstra took to Medium to pen a first-person account of alleged sexual abuse during their three-year relationship. Dykstra never mentioned Hardwick by name,...

Twentieth Century Fox Film said late this afternoon that it is canceling Fox 2000’s planned James Mangold-directed biopic about Patricia Hearst after Hearst herself publicly denounced the project and its source book today. The remarkable development comes hours after Hearst issued a damning statement about the project, the Jeffrey Toobin book, American Heiress, on which it’s based, and the upcoming CNN docuseries The Radical Story of Patty Hearst on which Toobin is an…...

It doesn’t seem like it, but it has been more than four decades since the Patty Hearst saga took America by storm. To this generation, the name Patty Hearst has little significance, if any at all. For those of us who were old enough to watch television, we remember the name vividly. In fact, the name Patricia Campbell Hearst is eternally embedded in our psyches. Patty was the granddaughter of publishing and media mogul William Randolph Hearst. While she was a student at the University of California at Berkeley, Patty was kidnapped, but her kidnapping was only the beginning. She

Logan director James Mangold has landed another directing gig. He's currently working on a script for a solo X-23 film, and he's also going to direct a feature film adaptation of the children's book Crenshaw.
Now the director is set to helm an untitled Patty Hearst biopic based on the book by Jeffery Toobin which is called American Heiress. The story is said to trace the "audacious, kaleidoscopic and psychologically twisted story of a true-life Alice in Wonderland.”
It will follow Hearst’s capture and two-year detainment by the Symbionese Liberation Army in the mid 1970’s, as well as her transition from hostage to warrior. The kidnapped heiress captured the world’s attention when she was caught on tape participating in armed bank robberies. Her arrest and trial sparked a media frenzy.

Why We’re Obsessed With Colin Farrell
No one is having a career resurgence like Colin Farrell. After burning out on big budget films, the actor has embraced smaller, warmer roles in films like In Bruges and Crazy Heart and pushed himself even further as a performer in arthouse films like Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster, which earned universal acclaim and Farrell some of his best reviews yet. This year, he was the subject of Sofia Coppola’s gaze in a remake of The Beguiled, which is out now DVD/Blu-ray and On Demand, opposite Nicole Kidman. Now, Farrell has reunited with Lanthimos and Kidman for The Killing of a Sacred Deer, easily one of the most disturbing films of the year -- and the best of Farrell’s career. “Approaching Yorgos’ work both...
