The demise of disco was greatly accelerated by the cultural impact of the infamous Disco Demolition Night of 1979 in Chicago’s Comiskey Park. While rockers have used the word in a pejorative sense for years, DJs, artists, impresarios, and aficionados know that disco—both the genre and the subculture—not only has deep roots but has lived on under various aliases, inspiring the evolution of music and keeping people moving in various funky ways. Le freak, c’est toujours chic!
These are the ideas, plot points and storylines that Toronto filmmakers Omar Majeed (“Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam”) and Peter Mishara explore in their documentary feature “Disco’s Revenge,” which had its world premiere Thursday in Hot Docs’ Pop/Life strand.
The film, which screens again Friday, is set for release this year. Elevation Pictures will distribute it in Canada; Republic Pictures has acquired rights outside of Canada.

Leave it to a fiery soul legend to make a low-key Tmi anthem. Before tell-all memoirs by Cybill Shepherd or Karrine Stefans, Betty Davis, who died in February at 77, put no less an eminence than Miles Davis on front street with her 1974 deep cut, “He Was a Big Freak.”
“She opens this song with a line screaming, ‘He was a big freak,’” says author Dawnie Walton, who found inspiration in the songstress’s brazen, zero-fucks-given ethos. “And it’s like, ‘I used to beat him with a turquoise chain.’ Like what?...

Ahead of a special belated 80th-birthday show, George Clinton gave a gift of his own to his old school in Newark, New Jersey, — a ton of musical equipment. In turn, Avon Elementary officially renamed its music room in honor of the funk legend.
The event took place Thursday, March 17, with Clinton receiving a warm welcome full of confetti and rousing cheers from students and teachers. During the George Clinton Music Room naming ceremony, Clinton performed a bit as well, unleashing — what else? — Parliament’s 1976 classic, “Give Up the Funk.”

Singer-songwriter Amanda Shires released the song “The Problem” in September as a duet with her husband Jason Isbell, but she had also conceived its frank discussion of abortion as being a conversation among several women. That idea is now a reality with a new version of the song titled “Our Problem” commemorating the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade and featuring a diverse, multi-generational cast. Cyndi Lauper, Angie Stone, K.Flay, Lilly Hiatt, Linda Perry, Morgane Stapleton, Nona Hendryx, Peaches, and Valerie June all sing on the track.

The previously announced revival of Charles Randolph-Wright’s play Blue, directed by Phylicia Rashad, will play a 16-week engagement at Harlam’s legendary Apollo Theater, with Tony winner Leslie Uggams and Emmy winner Lynn Whitfield heading the cast.
The production was announced last spring with the intention of finding a Broadway opening, a task that proved impossible in a very crowded Broadway landscape (the popular Beetlejuice is being booted from the Winter Garden Theatre in June to make way for The Music Man with Hugh Jackman).
Blue, a play with a jazzy score by Nona Hendryx and Randolph-Wright, will begin previews at the Apollo on April 27, with opening night on May 10. The engagement will run through August 16.
The announcement was made today by producers Brian Moreland, Ron Simons, Mike Jackson, Eric Falkenstein and singer John Legend.
Rashad starred in the play’s 2000 premiere at Arena Stage in Washington D.C.

Yeezus marks another twist in Kanye West's sound, away from the hip-hop/prog-rock fusion of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and the chipmunk soul of his early years toward electronic and lyrical brutalism. With typical hyperbole, West recently called himself "a Black New Wave artist," but it's hard to connect Yeezus to other musicians — Dirty Mind–era Prince, Grace Jones, Fishbone, Nona Hendryx, A.R. Kane, etc. — who could be said to fit that label. So what does it sound like? The album is anarchic and raw, stripped of sonic excess and yet also packed full of different musical allusions. Visceral hip-hop, damaged dance-music grooves, splashes of Jamaican dancehall, an industrial sense of menace — it's not exactly summer fun, but it is fascinating. If you find yourself communing with Kanye’s current state of mind, here are 30 albums for further exploration.1. Nina Simone, Pastel Blues (Philips, 1965)Nina Simone’s strange,...

Funk legend will discuss science fiction, Afro-futurism and 'all things galactic' at an event called Space Children
Funk legend George Clinton is to make a one-off appearance at the British Library in London. The Parliament-Funkadelic founder will speak about science fiction, Afro-futurism and, er, gettin' down.
Clinton will appear at an event titled Space Children, part of the library's ongoing science fiction exhibition. Together with Nona Hendryx, who sang Lady Marmalade as a member of Labelle, Clinton will appear on 18 June to discuss his love of spaceships, funk and "all things galactic". "[Clinton's] P-funk mythology turned his whole band into characters from a wild space opera," explained a press release, and Labelle's "concerts and extraordinary styling in the mid-70s had to be seen to be believed."
News of Clinton's forthcoming appearance follows reports that the 69-year-old was admitted to hospital for a staph infection in one of his legs. After a routine check-up,...

We at Ta are very excited to bring you music from Bobby Long’s brand new studio album, A Winter Tale. Bobby Long’s name should be familiar to every Twilighter, as he was the co-writer for Twilight’s Let Me Sign, performed by Robert Pattinson. Bobby is currently on a very demanding tour promoting the album and will also be appearing on Jay Leno this Thursday, February 3rd. After bringing you a contest for a limited edition vinyl of the song Stranger Songs, we’re thrilled to share the full album with you now. See it all below:
You can also watch the first part of a behind-the-scenes look at Bobby’s current tour:
British singer-songwriter-guitarist Bobby Long’s anticipated debut studio album ‘A Winter Tale’, produced by Liam Watson (White Stripes) will be released February 1st, 2011 on Ato Records. Currently residing in New York City, the 24-year old Long has been writing finely-crafted songs since taking up the guitar at age 17; from then on he’s been creating memorable songs inhabited by hauntingly poetic lyrics. After relocating to London from the countryside of South West England, he became a fixture at London’s open-mic nights while attending London Metropolitan University where he studied Music in Film and wrote his thesis on The Social Impact of American Folk Music. He quickly established himself on the local open mic circuit, finding his voice and beginning to develop songs characterized by catchy melodies paired with elusive, imaginative lyrics. In London he met a circle of fellow musicians, among them Marcus Foster, with whom he wrote a song called “Let Me Sign,” and soon-to-be megastar Robert Pattinson, who would sing it in the 2008 blockbuster film Twilight. It is Bobby Long’s intensely personal songs, vocal prowess, and heart-wrenching soulfulness that resonate with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, creating a loyal following through constant touring over the past two years. In 2009, Long played 160 shows in seven months in seven countries.
A Winter Tale merges band power with acoustic rawness, featuring Nona Hendryx (Labelle) on backing vocals on “Penance Fire Blues,” B. J. Cole (Elton John, Sting) on pedal steel, Icelandic singer Lay Low on several tracks, and other top-drawer musicians. And by way of continued extensive touring, he will be bringing A Winter Tale and what has been called his “tapestry of tales” to the ever-growing audiences seduced by his compelling voice, musicianship and charm.
Check out Bobby’s myspace page here, his official site here, follow him on twitter here and go buy his album on iTunes here!

Who’S It For? Perry’s loyal audience will find this to be his bleakest story yet, and they should be fine-tuned enough for the melodramatic decisions that Perry makes with this adaptation. Outsiders to the Tyler Perry universe are a toss-up, as the film’s themes, not to mention its sincerity, are bound to work for some more than others, regardless of their race or gender.
