ABC’s American Idol 2023 finale is nearly here, and fans can’t wait to see who takes home the grand prize. Many fans of the series have been watching for years, and one contestant from season 5 and season 7 of the series recently took to the internet to answer fan questions. Here’s what past American Idol cast member Carly Smithson said about a guest mentor messing up her chance to win.

Our American Idol “journey” has come to an end, but let us not weep for what’s been cancelled, let us instead go to iTunes and download the Season 15 winner’s new single. Hey, from a songwriting vantage point, it may not be “Home,” but it definitely ranks above “No Boundaries” and “Inside Your Heaven” — and we bought those, too. And if this show can produce one more bona fide radio/touring superstar, maybe the inevitable reboot will happen sooner than expected, no?

American Idol season 1 debuted about a week after The Wire season 1 did. Though my TV tastes over the years trended much more towards complicated scripted dramas like the latter, I spent a long time watching the former, and enjoying it in the moments when the series wasn't busy padding its run time with inanities (like the entire judging career of Randy Jackson) and simply let the contestants sing. Often, those performances were just overpraised photocopies of the original moments, but when an Idol singer put their own stamp on a familiar tune, or dug up an obscurity and made it sound like a hit, I couldn't begrudge the series its enormous popularity. Eventually, the show got too repetitive for me to stick with, especially as more and more scripted options rose up demanding my attention. The last time I watched an Idol season from start to finish was the 9th,...

Hush, Idoloonie, don’t you cry-y-y-y.
Oh yes, I have spent the last week (Ok, actually the last 15 years) reviewing, rewinding and re-listening to the greatest performances in American Idol history — and the time has come to count down the definitive Top 30.

It’s an impossible task, if I’m being honest. How do you separate raw, gut-busting emotion from pure, mind-blowing perfection? How do you leave out Pia Toscano and David Archuleta and Carly Smithson and Kree Harrison and Trenyce (oh, Trenyce!) and Sarina Joi-Crowe?...

"American Idol" just unleashed its final season preview. It should touch you. You get just the right glimpses of Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Phillip Phillips, and a few other winners who filled you with strange, hopeful glee all those years ago. You remember most of the big names of the series. But there are some others you should recall too. Here are our five favorite underrated performances in the show's history. 1. Katelyn Epperly, "The Scientist" (Season 9) Ellen DeGeneres was doomed as a panelist when she declared this rendition "too slow." Iowa native Katelyn Epperly made Coldplay's "The Scientist" a proper ballad with this hushed rendering. She gets better and better as she goes along, adding color and dynamic. I 2. Didi Benami, "Play With Fire" (Season 9) Didi Benami triumphed (and kind of failed) in a number of rad ways here. What I love: She picked a song meaningful to her,...

We've just learned the exhilarating news that "Survivor" has posted a list of 32 potential veterans who are eligible to come back for a "Second Chance" season. Does the name "Kelly Wiglesworth" still send shivers of excitement through your spine as if reality TV is a new and burgeoning genre full of utopian possibilities, including Richard Hatch's financial stability? Well, it should. It's hard to pick the absolute best reality contestant who didn't win his/her particular season. Parvati comes to mind during the season of Sandra's second victory, but it's almost never the #1 player who wins that show. I think you have to look at "American Idol" for the greatest competitors who never became voter favorites. I'm a big fan of season 9 tenth-place finisher Didi Benami, season seven star Carly Smithson, and -- my #1 favorite contestant ever -- season six third-place finisher Melinda Doolittle. She took the soppiest...

Breathe in, y’all. This is the real American Idol with its 70-second performances and glib-ass judge comments. (I’m already starting to grit my teeth whenever Harry brings up “intonation” in a condescending way.) The theme of this live episode’s performances was, essentially, “Be yourself!” So as you can imagine, there were tons of disasters. Being yourself + being interesting = apparently difficult. Let’s rank ‘em.
13. Kristen O’Connor, Kelly Clarkson’s “Beautiful Disaster”
Here’s my impression of Kristen O’Connor and her brilliant Moneyball-style strategizing: “I need to prove my worth since I’m a wild card. My strategy is to choose Kelly Clarkson‘s most forgettable song. See you in the finals!” Billy Beane in the hooooouse. Weirder yet, she somehow intended the song — which is very much addressed from a woman to a man — to be about herself? She’s the beautiful disaster? Or this competition is?...

This week of nervous performances and shy interviews has been sort of fun, but now, following the announcement of the Top 13, comes the real American Idol: months of live performances where assured talents shine while singing some of the most dated song choices ever. Will we get another Leiber and Stoller week? I must know!
Let’s rank this year’s competitors from worst to first, shall we? But before we get to that: Did anyone notice that Emmanuel Zidor did not even flinch or reach out in congratulations when Spencer Lloyd was announced as a potential wild card pick for the Top 13? It was Shady and I #gotmylife from it. Made me wonder if Lloyd, the much-touted “worship leader,” is a bit of a homophobe. Zidor did not look like he wanted to look at that guy. It’s Candice vs. Kree. But only one is still fighting.
Here is my solemn promise: The last competitive episode of every American Idol season is anticlimactic and boring, and the last actual episode of every American Idol season is shockingly, face-kickingly wonderful. Seriously. Wednesday night we watched as Candice and Kree sauntered around a Cirque du Soleil-size stage and gurgled tunes new and old for an audience that knew exactly what to expect. It wasn’t a memorable night for either performer, even though they both delivered at least one knockout performance. My takeaway from the night is this: If you came in rooting for Kree, you’re still rooting for Kree now. If you came in rooting for Candice, you’re still rooting for Candice. And I like you better. I can’t get no satisfaction — not when it comes to American Idol‘s Season 12 theme nights, anyway.

I love American Idol, and therefore I can't stand when certain kickass Idol performances are forgotten years later. Here are eight you should keep close to your heart and voice box.
1. Von Smith, "You're All I Need" (season 8)
The ultra-talented Von Smith had the misfortune of auditioning for American Idol during season eight, the year when the Top 36 was slashed down to a Top 13 using a dubious voting system. It didn't help that folks like Adam Lambert and Alexis Grace (!) were endlessly touted before the Top 36, making their inclusion in the Top 13 almost inevitable compared to their little-seen competitors. Von's voice speaks -- nay, soars! -- for itself. So grand and crystal clear, and if I do say so myself, better than 99% of the vocalists we've heard on the show since.
2. Allison Iraheta and Cyndi Lauper, "Time After Time" (season 8)

Dolly Parton famously claimed it cost "a lot of money to look this cheap," but the woman is truly one of our classiest superstars. From her brilliant songwriting to her steadfast support of Lgbt causes, Dolly is cool, funny, and wonderfully talented. Her righteous essence literally fuels a theme park. How's that for legendary?
This Saturday Dolly turns 67, and thus I'd thought we play my favorite parlor game: Choose this lady's greatest single moment! Before I pick my #1, here's a fast list of the close runners-up.
5. Steel Magnolias: Look. All I want is for Dolly to run a salon and feed Julia Roberts emergency orange juice all day.
4. "9 to 5": The clackety-clack of that typewriter and the line "Pour myself a couple of ambition" are Biblically beautiful.
3. "Here You Come Again": A heartbreaker. And if I do say so myself, Carly Smithson killed this on the seventh season of American Idol.

Yes indeed, after several days of intense speculation, Fox announced at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in Beverly Hills Monday that Mariah Carey has officially signed on as an American Idol judge for the show’s upcoming 12th season.
“I am so excited to be joining Idol,” Carey shared via a phone call to Fox boss Kevin Reilly, just seconds after he shared the news with the TCA crowd. “I wanted to be there today and I wish I could have been there myself to tell you.

Here comes some non-b*tchy diplomacy: The eleventh season of American Idol wound up to be an apples-and-oranges grudge match, and either of the final contestants is a viable contender. For sure. Except here's the thing: If you're not rooting for Jessica Sanchez, you're a screaming ninny in mom jeans, and I hate that you believe you matter. This show is so starved for a female champion of wondrous vocal prowess and stage-stomping finesse that voting otherwise is boring contrarianism. I'm obligated to revisit those other lady contestants who fell like dominoes in previous seasons: Carly Smithson? Allison Iraheta? Crystal Bowersox? Haley Reinhart? They dead, girl. Jessica has the ceiling-piercing wail to reverse the streak, and unfortunately, her opponent Phillip "Maroon 311" Phillips has exactly the skillset to maintain it. He's a fuzzy Xerox of Scotty McCreery who combines Kris Allen's knack for song reinvention and Lee DeWyze's rowring,...

American Idol's drop from Top 6 to Top 5 is always pivotal. The show enters a sudden death phase, every song choice is critical, and every remaining wannabe becomes a candidate for the crown. What I'm trying to say: The losers should be gone by now (unless we're talking about season nine, in which Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, and unfortunate winner Lee DeWyze still remained at the final 5). This makes the question of last night's eliminated contestant a vital one: Was it Joshua Ledet, the dancing R&B child whose best days are probably behind him? What about Elise Testone, the cool Rickie Lee Jones proxy who's been waiting to wilt for weeks? And what of Phillip Phillips, who still hasn't hit the bottom three yet? Scroll down to see who the sixth place sistah/brothah is.
Elise Testone. My girl! Our girl.

The chicks and chavs of American Idol wailed two jams this week: one post-2000 anthem and one "soul" song in the tradition of Soul Train, the most phenomenal music series of all time. (Sorry, Dick Clark! I still watch $25,000 Pyramid reruns every day, so no disrespect.) Though it was awkward when Don Cornelius' son Tony appeared in the audience not two months after his father's self-destruction, much of the night was a splendid musical spectacular. Hot. And a couple of beleaguered contestants rebirthed and came alive for the first time in weeks. Wee!
Now, if I were performing this week, I'd have chosen "Work It" by Missy Elliott (I love inventive vagina slang!) and "Ease on Down the Road" from The Wiz. Both would feature Timbaland in a scarecrow costume, if that helps you to understand my vision. Onward to our rankings!

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

How can anyone complain about an American Idol episode that packed in performances from more than 50 singers, a heaping portion of maniacal/delightful bitchery courtesy of “The Vocal Coach from Hell,” and a genuine emotional breakdown from soundbite-spewing cool kid Heejun Han? Actually, if you’ll give me a second, I’m sure I can come up with something — Season 10 Vegas survivor Hollie Cavanagh once again getting the seen-but-never-heard treatment? one of the strongest vocalists in the competition getting burned by a last-minute judges’ switcheroo? the continued existence of Randy Jackson on my TV screen? — but sometimes, you have to...

The X Factor: The Search for the Star of the World’s Next “Iconic” Pepsi Commercial reached its semifinal round on Wednesday night, and there was plenty of good news to share.
Nicole Shapeshifter announced that “God is good” and the boos (booze?) she’d been receiving from the American public had not only made her stronger, but inspired her to wear an obscenely ugly rainbow-colored gown with a black lace overlay. Simon Cowell reported that despite last week’s gut-wrenching ouster, Rachel Crow is alive and well and, though he hadn’t laid eyes on her, was not...

Before "The X Factor" starts, Steve of course has to check in with Nicole, who is still getting booed by the audience. Heh. She's also wearing some kind of Lisa Frank-inspired lace top and spouting off things like "God is good."
That won't make anyone like you more after you couldn't sack up and send Marcus home last week, Nicole.
Anyway. The first song is the Pepsi Challenge viewers' choice song. Clearly the viewers are stuck in 1997.
1. Marcus Canty, "I'll Make Love to You"
Kinda racy for a Fox singing competition show. Also, not as good done as one part instead of four. And he's wandering around with a single white rose as one girl writhes aroudn on stage in the background. Seriously, this all smacks of a bad early 90s music video. And the ending is really weird. Vocally, it was fine, but I was way too distracted by all the strange trimmings.

Former American Idol contestants can get anywhere from $5,000 to more than $500,000 for a single appearance. Mj's Big Blog unearthed Degy Booking International's spring 2011 Pdf of booking fees for musical acts, and some of those are alumni from the Fox series. The rates may change or be intentionally inflated (especially on a public list like this) and/or negotiable, and range from the $5,000 to $10,000 that Carly Smithson's We Are the Fallen gets...

It’ll be an all-country, teen-vs.-teen showdown when American Idol kicks off the first half of its two-night Season 10 finale in a few short hours. And somewhere backstage at the Nokia, I’m guessing Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe is rubbing his hands together with glee that it’s come down to a pair of fresh-scrubbed kids who’ve been prominently featured on the show since the audition rounds kicked off in January.
Still, there’s an air of predictability surrounding a coronation ceremony starring Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, two contestants who’ve stayed in their lanes and shied...

Regardless of your contestant allegiance heading into the American Idol Top 3 results-show telecast, there were reasons to celebrate by the time the credits stopped rolling and the season finale of [cue imitation of Fox voiceover guy] Bohhhhhhhnzzzz [end imitation of Fox voiceover guy] began.
Fans of country music, the vitality of youth, plaid shirts, denim jackets, sparkly cowboy boots, the Make a Wish for Nigel Lythgoe Foundation, and the act of locking them doors and turning the lights down low had to be psyched to learn that the Season 10 finale will be a battle between 17-year-old Scotty McCreery and 16-year-old Lauren Alaina, the youngest teen-vs.-teen finale in the history of the franchise.

At the end of American Idol‘s Top 5 performance show, I wasn’t sure whether I should pick up my phone to text-message votes on behalf of Haley Reinhart or use it to dial 911. On one hand, I wanted to reward Haley for getting up on the Idol stage and delivering the single best musical moment of Season 10 — and a second performance that would probably rank only a few slots behind. Conversely, though, I had just witnessed the judges’ panel committing criminal acts of foolery, vandalism, and perjury — and I wanted them hurled headlong into Reality TV Prison to rot...

Zap2it has been looking back at the best performances from each stage of the "American Idol" finals and now we're taking a gander at the Top 7. This week on "Idol," the contestants are taking on 21st Century Songs, but what about the past performances at Top 8?
Who are you favorites? Vote below. As of this writing, you've voted Carrie Underwood's "Alone" as the best Top 11 performance, David Cook's "Billie Jean" as the best Top 10 performance and David Archuleta's "Smoky Mountain Memories" as the best Top 9 performance and Adam Lambert's "Mad World" as the best Top 8 performance.
For our Top 7 rewind, we were delighted to remember how great the Great American Songbook was for Season 5 and how Mariah Carey was surprisingly strong for Season 7. We also had to relive the horror that was Barry Manilow week for Season 3. Plus, Bo Bice's best performance ever.

Sitting through American Idol‘s Top 8 results-show telecast was kind of like going to a modern-day multiplex where your every whim can be satisfied. There was the animated tearjerker about the bright-eyed woodland creature who’d been in captivity too long and yearned to escape to wide open spaces. There was the horror flick about the (sexy) zombie who refused to die. There was the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo-esque thriller about a kick-ass heroine overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles. And there was even a sweet teen romance — or was it supposed to be a brother-and-sister comedy? — with a somewhat muddled marketing campaign.

"American Idol's" Michael Johns has kept uber busy performing, auditioning and recording music for his upcoming sophomore album. But one thing Johns is never too busy to do: Lend a helping hand to the "Idol" up and comers.
Zap2it caught up with Johns at the Reality Rocks Expo, where he filled us in on the status of his new music, an upcoming return to his old Fox reality show stomping ground and what project he has most recently been pursuing.
Johns confirms that he returned to his the old stage that turned him into a household during Season 7 just a few weeks ago. "We shot a segment for them. It was myself, Elliott Yamin, Carly Smithson and Mikalah [Gordon]," he says.
The "Idol" alum stopped by to the give the new crop of contestants a little advice which only a fellow "Idol" hopeful kind that only they are capable of giving.

It's that very special week of the year, when we collectively realize that "American Idol" contestants were born the same year we saw "Uncle Buck" at the Westbury Drive-In. It's the dreaded "Songs From the Year the Contestants Were Born" theme, or as I like to call it, "Producers Force Thia Megia to Sing a Song That Wasn't Written 100 Years Ago."
But this week "Idol" is also giving back. Portions of the proceeds from the studio recordings will go to helping the relief efforts in Japan. But really, the entire world benefits from watching Steven Tyler sing, "There's something wrong with the world today ... Oh, hi there. Let's talk natural disasters."
Before I point out that 75 percent of the season 10 contestants were born after "Mannequin" hit theaters, and 25 percent of them after "Mannequin 2: On the Move," let's rip right into the top 12's performances.

The "American Idol" live show kicked off with a tastefully done little PSA for the relief effort for Japan. If you download any of the songs from tonight's show, the proceeds go to the Red Cross, plus there will be a way to donate during the results show tomorrow night. That's cool.

There's a certain letdown in week 2 of American Idol. And tonight for the first time, I missed old Idol. I missed Ricky Minor. I missed inventive and new arrangements. And except for a few cases, I missed inventive song choice.
So instead of torturing I'll go in performance order and bust this out.
Naima Adedapo "What's Love Got To Do With It" I wanted to like this more than I did. I liked the idea of the arrangement, and Naima was fierce, and feeling the song. That said, it was flat most of the way through, and sort of one-note emotionally. If she's not in the bottom three I'll be surprised.
Paul McDonald "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" Somebody please Paul a guitar already. This felt disjointed and as Simon would have said, as if my drunk uncle has gotten up at a wedding to sing.

We kick off the Milwaukee "American Idol" auditions with Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson's impromptu "Sweet Emotion." Heh. Ryan Seacrest informs us that this is the show's first time in Milwaukee for auditions and naturally native son Danny Gokey is there to lend a hand.
In the montage of good ol' Midwestern auditioners, we spy a girl from Cedar Falls, Ia alongside the Cf sign, which is our hometown. Excitement. You go, little girl.
But first we have Scott McCreary, an adorable 16-year-old with a very deep voice. He sings "Your Man" and wow, he has such an old-school country voice. The deep stuff is fantastic. Steven Tyler asks for something a little more contemporary and he busts out some Travis Tritt. It's fabulous. We mean, not everybody loves country, but you can't deny this kid's talent. Randy cites his throw-back country voice which -- totally. Hope to see this kid go far,...
