Per Variety, Alex Cox is ready to return to the bizarre world of car repossession and extraterrestrials. The outlet reports that the director is set to helm Repo Man 2: The Wages of Beer, a long-belated sequel to the 1984 cult classic.
The original movie starred Emilio Estevez as Otto, a young punk who is recruited by a car repossession agency and finds himself in pursuit of a Chevrolet Malibu that is wanted for a $20,000 bounty – and has something otherworldly stashed in its trunk. The sequel will pick up “after Otto has boarded his trusty 1967 Chevy Malibu to journey across the infinities of time and space. In that time, he has aged exactly 90 minutes.” As Estevez is naturally a little too old to reprise the role, Kiowa Gordon has stepped in to play Otto in the sequel.

Dark Winds is an enjoyable if fairly standard cop drama based on the novels of Tony Hillerman. The chalk and cheese partners Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and FBI agent Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) investigate a series of apparently unrelated crimes. What sets it apart from the crowd is the setting and period: the Navajo Nation of the 1970s.
The action kicks off with a violent bank raid. The thieves make off in a chopper and are flying in the direction of the Navajo Nation when it disappears. FBI agent Leland Whitover (Noah Emmerich) charges Leaphorn with investigating. He also arranges to have Chee seconded into the police force in order to keep an eye on things.
Despite the somewhat formulaic plot - the twist and turns are what you would expect and where you would expect them - the pacing of the narrative makes Dark Winds very watchable.

AMC is heading into more Dark Winds.
The cable network has renewed the crime drama for a third season, coming a couple of weeks after season two finished its run.
The series is planned to premiere in early 2025, a noticeable shift from the summer premiere of its first two seasons, but understandable given the writers and actors strike.
It comes after Dark Winds made its debut on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max service as part of a two-month pop-up.
Dark Winds stars Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten.
The first season of the series, which is produced by AMC Studios, drew 2.2M viewers on AMC for its June 2022 launch in Live+3 ratings. The company said that the second season averaged 1.7M viewers each week in Live+3, per Nielsen and saw “significant” viewership and acquisition gains from season one on AMC+.

This article contains spoilers for Dark Winds season 2.
The acclaimed AMC+ neo-noir series Dark Winds, created by Graham Roland and based on the Leaphorn & Chee novel series by Tony Hillerman, has just wrapped its second season. Going deeper, darker, and more violent than its inaugural season, Dark Winds places protagonist Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) on a more personal and grueling gauntlet that leads him to journey through his own heart of darkness. This isn’t to say that the second season is an introspective story, the season kicks off with a literal bang, but it does strike particularly closer to home for Leaphorn.
Drawing elements from Hillerman’s 1980 novel People of Darkness, the second season starts out with its two leads investigating different cases before inevitably bringing them back together. Give Joe Leaphorn credit for finding a way to get justice for his murdered son, J.J.

Dark Winds, based on Tony Hillerman’s “Leaphorn & Chee” book series, is a Native American series with a gripping premise and a set of intriguing characters. Its first season, which premiered in 2022, followed Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, Deputy Jim Chee, and Sergeant Bernadette Manuelito as they solved mysterious murders in the Navajo community. The series expertly combined Navajo mythology with complex investigations of the murder cases. Similarly, Season 2 took inspiration from Hillerman’s novel People of Darkness and introduced a menacing killer named Colton Wolf. The suspense and personal connections added to the tension. However, the final episode of Season 2 was a bit disappointing, leaving us unsatisfied with the very predictable conclusion.
In the final episode of Dark Winds Season 2, Colton Wolf met his end at the hands of his employer, B. J. Vines. As Colton revealed that Leaphorn had suspicions about Vines’ role in the Drumco Oil explosion, Vines erased...

When Chris Eyre’s “Smoke Signals” won the audience prize in Sundance 25 years ago, the director thought the kudos would soon lead to a landslide of opportunities for Native talent. Amid a flourishing independent film scene, the road trip dramedy won acclaim and awards as the first feature written, directed and produced by Native filmmakers. But it took two decades, and a pivot to television, for Native voices to finally get a wider chance to be heard.
More than two decades later, Eyre is now an executive producer and director on AMC+’s Navajo noir series “Dark Winds,” based on the Tony Hillerman mystery novels. Longtime Hillerman fans Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin also serve as executive producers. “Dark Winds” premiered in 2022 as a wave of TV Westerns was proving massively popular, and yet, it’s very different from shows like “Yellowstone,” “Joe Pickett,” and “Justified” with its focus on a Native cast,...

There are always mystical forces at play in Lt. Joe Leaphorn's world.
But it wasn't apparent after Dark Winds Season 2 Episode 1 if any magic was involved in his current case.
A mysterious cult is at the center of this season's case, based on "People of Darkness," the fourth volume of Tony Hillerman's Navajo Tribal Police series.
Things started with a bang, with Lt. Joe Leapcorn and his faithful sergeant Bernie Manuelito pinned under semiautomatic fire by a suspect they had been chasing.
But a quick cutaway later, and we'll be gaining context for the rest of the season leading up to that fateful moment.
Poor Joe began with a rare day off: riding his horse, letting loose the sheep, and tinkering on his motorcycle. Of course, that couldn't last.
That was because the person he loves most in the world, his saintly wife Emma, soon found herself in danger.

Early in the new season of Dark Winds, a wealthy woman hires Jim Chee to help recover a lockbox that was stolen from her home. A skeptical Chee says that the job sounds simple, “Except nothing ever is.”
You definitely cannot call Dark Winds Season Two simple. It features a pair of mysteries that inevitably connect in complicated ways that can at times require intense concentration to follow. Just as importantly, the series is even more ambitious in its depiction of life, death, and policing on a Navajo reservation in the early Seventies.

Zahn McClarnon loves that you love Dark Winds, the 1970s-set crime/mystery drama that returns with Season 2 this Thursday (on AMC+) and Sunday at 9/8c (on AMC proper).
The warm reception that Dark Winds Season 1 received last summer from viewers and critics alike “was not necessarily a surprise to me, but I was very happy that people enjoyed watching the show,” McClarnon told TVLine during a late-June Zoom. “I mean, it’s difficult to put together a television show. Extremely difficult. And when you get a reception like that, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

July is passing into August, which means that the dog days of summer are in full swing. The heat has certainly settled in over much of the United States, and there’s probably a large segment of the population looking to stay cool with a new streaming title or two.
There’s an excellent lineup of such titles to watch this week, despite the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild- American Federation of Television and Radio Artists being on strike. Writers and actors may be out on picket lines trying to defend their work from the encroachment of artificial intelligence, but you can enjoy the already-completed fruits of their labor with no guilt!

It was the “worst first,” showrunner Sierra Teller Ornelas told TheWrap. “Rutherford Falls,” her sitcom about two friends at a crossroads, was the first Native American television show run by a Native person. But after Peacock canceled it last year after two seasons, she became “the first Native American to have their show canceled,” she said.
Along with Hulu’s “Reservation Dogs,” “Rutherford Falls” spearheaded a wave of Native TV shows at least partly created and written by Native creatives following decades of Indigenous invisibility and crude stereotypes.
That wave also includes Netflix’s “Spirit Rangers,” an animated fantasy series for preschoolers about three Native American siblings who can turn into animal spirits, and A&e’s “Dark Winds,” an adaptation of Tony Hillerman’s bestselling series of thriller novels based on a Navajo reservation. Marvel’s forthcoming “Echo,” a “Hawkeye” spinoff on Disney+, is also a Native-themed show using Native writers.

Exclusive: Nicholas Logan and Jeri Ryan have joined the cast of Dark Winds, AMC’s Western noir thriller series based on Tony Hillerman’s popular Leaphorn & Chee book series. Logan joins as a Season 2 series regular and Ryan in a recurring role opposite Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon in the series from creator Graham Roland and executive producers George R.R. The castings reaffirm AMC’s commitment to Dark Winds, which has been a critical and commercial breakout, following a string of pickup reversal decisions by the network in the past few weeks done as a cost-cutting move.
Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (McClarnon) of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes.
Logan plays Colton Wolf, a twisted assassin with a secret that puts him on a collision course with Lt.

Dark Winds is getting a showrunner change for season two.
The breakout AMC series will see John Wirth take over showrunning duties for the sophomore run, replacing Vince Calandra, who served as showrunner and exec producer on season one.

John Wirth has signed on as showrunner and executive producer of “Dark Winds” Season 2 at AMC.
Wirth takes over the role from Vince Calandra, who was the showrunner of the first season of the series. The show was renewed for a second season in June shortly after it debuted.
This marks Wirth’s return to AMC Networks, as he was previously the showrunner on the AMC series “Hell on Wheels” for four seasons and an executive producer on the Sundance TV series “Hap and Leonard.” His other credits include “Wu Assassins,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” “Nash Bridges,” and “Picket Fences.”
“We are thrilled to welcome John Wirth, someone we know well and have collaborated with so successfully on multiple shows – most notably ‘Hell on Wheels’ – to the ‘Dark Winds’ creative team,” said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “This series quickly became one of...

AMC’s groundbreaking thriller Dark Winds is headed for a second season. The well-reviewed show features a team composed almost entirely of Native Americans in front of and behind the camera. From the top down, it was important to the creators to raise visibility across the board, from the writer’s room to the cast, directors and crew, and on screen.
Based on Tony Hillerman’s mystery novels, the series follows Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), a lieutenant with the Navajo tribal police, as he works alongside a brand new deputy, Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon).
Writer Billy Luther (“Frybread Face and Me”) shares how representation in the writer’s room helped to deliver accurate portrayals of the Native community and what mattered when sharing stories about cultural representation with mainstream audiences.
How did the creators discuss authenticity with the writers?
I think the word authenticity gets thrown around a lot. The...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched “HózhóoNaasháa,” the Season 1 finale of “Dark Winds,” streaming now on AMC+.
After a slow boil first season, “Dark Winds” ends with a bang — quite literally. The finale wraps up the case of the armored truck robbery that underlaid the six episode first season of AMC’s neo-noir series, which took its plot from Tony Hillerman’s 1978 novel “Listening Woman.” The episode ends with Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) in a tense stand-off in a cave where the two robbers were hiding their money and their hostages. And after plenty of twists and turns — including the revelation that Joe’s FBI ally Witover (Noah Emmerich) was actually allied with the robbers the entire time — the stand-off concludes with Jim and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) setting off explosives to bury the money and the bodies in the cave.

AMC managed to make a long-standing dream come true when "Dark Winds" made it to air. The series is based on the "Leaphorn & Chee" book series by Tony Hillerman, which Robert Redford optioned a full three decades ago in the hopes of bringing the tales to the screen. Well, it may have taken a long time but now it's out in the world, with the first season largely adapting "The Listening Woman." However, Hillerman's source material paves the way for more. So, the question is, are we going to get a "Dark Winds" season 2?
