After a challenging 2012, the lines have been drawn and the troops are in position for the 2013 radio year. Colin Delaney looks across the country at the old and new faces and the biggest fights on the cards in the battle for the ratings win.
2012 was a tumultuous year for Australia’s radio industry. Marred by several well-publicised incidents, the reputations and standing of talent, management and key brands in the space took a beating, as did the image of the medium as a whole.
But the stage is now set for the battle of 2013 after the ratings season begins on January 20 and those in the industry Encore spoke to are hopeful the coming 12 months will see a turnaround with a number of new additions to the talent lineup and the return of many industry veterans. In this roundup from the Encore and Mumbrella Annual, we look back at the year in radio.
2012 begins with 2DayFM shock jock Kyle Sandilands in a continuing sponsorship shit-storm. Jenny Craig is the first to sponsor the Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show after advertisers withdrew from the program in late 2011 following Sandilands’ vitriolic on-air rant at a News.com.au journalist that included calling her a ‘fat slag’. The public response to the weight loss brand’s decision to advertise sees them cancel their ads 24 hours later.
——————————————————————————————————–
Claire Hooper and Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross start their new partnership on Sydney’s Mix106.5 breakfast show as Jane Hall joins Chrissie Swan on Melbourne’s Mix101.1 breakfast show.
——————————————————————————————————–
The Kyle and Jackie O Show opens the year with a ratings drop from 11.2 per cent to 10.1 per cent. Elsewhere, Adelaide’s Mix 102.3 clings to a market lead ahead of FiveAA.

Hinch: back at Seven
Derryn Hinch, who was sacked by Melbourne radio station 3Aw last month, has re-emerged at Channel Seven, his former employer.
The outspoken broadcaster takes on a role as national public affairs commentator working across Seven shows Sunday Night, Seven News and Sunrise.
Hinch starts in the new role in November, when his time at 3Aw comes to an end. However, he is slated to appear on Sunrise on Monday morning.
“My doctor says I’ve got a Rolls-Royce liver – and now I’m back at the Rolls-Royce network,” said Hinch, referring to a liver transplant he had last year.
“I can’t wait to get started. I’ve got a lot of energy, and a lot of ideas and stories I want to pursue. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet. In fact she won’t be needed on stage for a long time,” he said.

3Aw breakfast's Ross Stevenson and John Burns
Melbourne’s most popular radio station – 3Aw – has widened the gap at number one, recording the biggest jump in the Nielsen ratings from 24 June to 1 September.
The Fairfax-owned Am station jumped from 15% to 16.2% audience share Monday to Sunday, with the biggest listenership spikes at breakfast and in the evening.
The 3Aw breakfast show with Ross Stevenson and John Burns – which was up by 2.5 percentage points – now enjoys a massive 21.6% share of morning listeners, one of the most dominant positions in Melbourne radio.
The station’s drivetime audience also grew slightly, up 0.2 percentage points to 12.8% share Monday to Friday, but it is probably too early to say whether the impact of the sacking presenter Derryn Hinch in late August had any baring on the result.
Arn’s Mix101.1 was the survey’s biggest casualty, down 1.4 percentage points to 6.2% share Monday to Sunday, and fared...

3Aw has announced Tom Elliott as its replacement for Derryn Hinch, who was fired by the station earlier this week.
Talking on 3Aw’s Mornings with Neil Mitchell, station Gm Shane Healy said: “We want to keep positioning 3Aw to be the best station in Australia. Not just now, but in three, five and ten years’ time.”Healy said the slot would probably expand to a three hour show.
The axing of the controversial Hinch, whose contract will run until the end of the year came as something of a surprise. At the last survey, 3Aw was the market leader in drivetime with 12.6% share.
Elliott, who has filled in for Hinch in the past, is scheduled to take over in the new year.

Shock jock Derryn Hinch, who was fired by the radio station he worked for for a decade last night, was recently interviewed by Brooke Hemphill about ethics, current affairs programming and writing children’s musicals.
“The secret to my success,” Derryn Hinch says, “is everyday at 20 to four, I go in here and have a nap.”
Hinch points to a room adjacent to his office on the seventh floor of Media House, the headquarters of Melbourne’s Fairfax Media and the radio station 3Aw where he hosted his drivetime talkback program.
It sounds like a joke but at precisely 20 to four, Hinch hands over a copy of his autobiography and says, “I’ll leave you with your book and I’ll be back in 10 minutes”. He ducks next door and pulls shut a black curtain. It really is time for Hinch’s daily nap. And why not? After five decades in the media,...

Derryn Hinch: out after 10 years with 3Aw
Derryn Hinch, a drive-time presenter on Melbourne’s most popular radio station 3Aw, has been sacked.
A press release sent out this evening said that Hinch was told that his contract would not be renewed after he came off air tonight.
Hinch, a New Zealand born former police reporter, TV show host and novelist, brings to an end a 10-year stint with the Fairfax-owned talkback station.
The news comes a fortnight 3Aw’s 4-6pm drive time slot lost some ground in the ratings, slipping to 12.6% share – but still held on to its market lead.
The station said that it had stood behind Hinch through a series of controversies. “Only last Friday 3Aw gave the broadcaster the day off to fight in court a charge of failure to vote,” the company said.
3Aw general manager Shane Healy said: “Life will not be...

So today I’ve cleared my diary. As has my colleague Brooke.
You see, there’s something we want to talk to you about.
Here’s our numbers:
Tim Burrowes: 02 8296 0201
Brooke Hemphill: 02 8296 0237
We’re both going to be at our desks, all day.
We want to talk to you about Encore magazine.
Today sees the launch of our iPad app.
I must admit, I’ve had mixed feeling about the iPad in the two years since it launched. There was the initial feeling of excitement. Followed by a slight cynicism as newspapers seized upon it, a little desperately it seemed to me, as their saviour.
But in recent weeks my thinking changed again.
As you may remember, we relaunched Encore magazine late last year – at the same time we moved its focus much more closely to Mumbrella’s audience. After three years away from print, I found myself falling back in love with magazines.

Geoffrey Edelsten has a secret love child, his ex-wife has claimed. The 68-year-old Australian medical entrepreneur, who is married to socialite and former Dancing with the Stars contestant Brynne, has allegedly kept 22-year-old Matthew a "secret" for years. Edelsten's former wife Leanne alleged on Derryn Hinch's 3Aw radio show yesterday that Matthew's mother is called Isabel Beard. Sources claim that Beard worked as a receptionist for Geoffrey years ago. Leanne divorced Geoffrey in 1988, but then discovered in 1990 that he had fathered a child with another woman. "What amazes me more is how Geoffrey for 20 odd years thought he could keep this a secret," she said. "He said to me he did not think she could get pregnant. He would (more)...
